It's said politics makes strange bedfellows. But it's got nothing on the peculiar marriage of art and history inspired by the tragic events of 9/11/01. Before that day, Daniel Rodriguez was a member of New York's finest, working as an NYPD security officer at the Manhattan South precinct. If it seemed an odd calling for a gifted, operatically trained tenor, it was employment many a journeyman artist could relate to: the proverbial "day job." As it turns out, no police academy in the world could have trained Rodriguez for the crucial role his city's darkest hour thrust upon him. While his colleagues mourned their staggering losses and toiled around the clock in rescue efforts, Rodriguez delivered renditions of "God Bless America" that rallied both his city and his country, much as Kate Smith's version of the Irving Berlin patriotic standard had done at the dawn of WWII.

Contemporary jazz great-producer Tom Scott took it from there, showcasing Rodriguez's powerful voice in this deftly arranged album focused sharply on personal and national inspiration. Taking his cue from his own hero, Mario Lanza, Rodriguez instills no small amount of drama in his performances, and it serves him well on tracks like the American folk classic "Shenandoah," a rousing take on Scarlet Pimpernel's "Into the Fire," and the relative Sinatra rarity "The House I Live In." The "God Bless America" here varies from the original single release, with Rodriguez reading the spoken intro once delivered by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Is Rodriguez the greatest tenor of modern times? No. But it's hard to imagine a talent better suited to the challenge history has thrust upon him; we're lucky--make that blessed--to have him. --Jerry McCulley

This alblum is a treasure to own and listen to. He really captures the spirit of patriotism. I have played his songs at a local fireworks show that I DJ at and his songs are up there with the other songs by artists by Mr. Lee "God Bless The U.S.A." Greenwood and other great artists. New York City and the nation needed him at a time when we were trying to recover from the worst tragedy in the history of the U.S.A. and he was there for us.

Daniel's album is music to be shared with family and with friends to help further ensure warmth, strong family ties, and love of our beautiful country. His voice is magical, skilled, rich and so memorable that it can take one on a journey from yesterday to promise for a bright tomorrow. This is a superb rendering of past unforgettable music. His solemn rendition of the peace song "God Bless America" is the album's centerpiece and truly unforgettable....

I first heard of Daniel Rodriguez a couple of months ago when he sang on Jay Leno's show. He was/is WONDERFUL! His voice is beautiful, but he sings from the heart, and that makes him exceptional.

My favorites are "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" where Daniel truly shows off his vocal talents. I could have done without the choir backup on "Ave Maria" but nonetheless a great rendition.

The ending that he has for the "The Lord's Prayer" almost brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it. Well done Daniel.

This is a great CD...of course, Daniel Rodriquez is the best!!!
As much as I enjoyed it, I do think "In the Presence", also by the same vocalist, is the ultimate. That could be because "In the Presence" was the first CD I had of this tenor vocalist, who is outstanding!

Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). And on top of that is a really special treat: the title song (borrowing an unforgettable classical melody) which blends Church's soaring vocals with the tender voice of young country prodigy Billy Gilman. --Sarah Chin

this cd is pure magic...almost 20 great christmas songs on one cd sung by the voice of an angel herself..there may be a few mixed reviews by some people who must be opera voice teachers because there is nothing wrong with this cd...it is flawless....charlotte's soaring vocals, the beautiful orchestra and background singers, the whole cd has the christmas feel to it..."o come all ye faithfull" has to be heard to be believed...it is breathtaking...i love charlottes take on "winter wonderland" and "ding dong merrily on high" ..made me want to go dance in the snow or something.....she hits every note beautifully..buy this cd...i bought it back in 2000 and have listened to it at every Christmastime since or Christmas doesnt feel the same.

Charlotte Church has done it again! She is extremely talented. Even if she was 25 when she put this out, she'd be amazing. But she was only 14-15 years old when she recorded this! Beautiful. This album has great choral accompaniments and fabulous orchestra arrangements. It is a little on the high side in certain songs, but it still sounds amazing. I love her voice.

I can't believe how well John Bayless has mastered the piano. This is very obvious from the first song that you ever hear him play. I'd really like to watch him play in concert. However, the songs on this album are too much work for me to listen to. The music is so busy that I can hardly concentrate on the melody and it hardly gives me the peace I expect from traditional Christmas music. Some of my favorites for this category are Jim Brickman, David Huntsinger, and Tim Janis.

This is the holiday music I have listened to throughout the season, and it is so beautiful I cannot bear to put it away yet. I love Bayless's work at any time, and these arrangements simply take my breath away. His blending of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with "Going Home" from the New World Symphony is particulary poignant. And his signature "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring/Amazing Grace" is seasonless and timeless. Christmas is over, but get this anyway; it's wonderful.

David Lanz? Jim Brickman? John Tesh? Move over guys... John Bayless has done what no others could... Taken the xmas classics to a new level of musical enjoyment! By combining the songs together, and making them so rich and full of life, this will be my favorite Christmas CD for a looooooooooong time.

4 out of 5 stars Nowhere near vintage Procol but still better than most.......2007-01-05

While I agree it's useless to bemoan the absence of band members of the past to understand reviewers' loyalty love of this band, the contributions of drummer BJ Wilson and guitarist Robin Trower have to be considered. The latter brought a crunchy tension while BJ Wilson provided the pacing, artistry and heart of the sound. These two, especially Wilson, can't be replaced. However, I do think a band as fine as Procol Harum could have done much better than their current blander-than-bland guitarist and journeyman drummer. Saying that, The Well's on Fire is still head-and-shoulders above much of what I hear today. The songs are now more tenuous in melodyb but make up for it in the lyrics, which Reid nows embues with a real-world sensibility that relates the listener far more directly than the lyrics of yore. Brooker's voice and Fisher's keyboards mesh as finely as they ever did. While I prefer the songwriting on Prodigal Stranger, the performances here are more direct, emotive and live-sounding. A worthy listen to be sure, despite the caveats expressed above.

I had high hopes for this after reading other readers' reviews. What a disappointment! The songs are completely forgettable and often tuneless. Hard to believe they would release songs like "Every Dog Has His Day." Yuck.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Musicians.......2003-09-21

After waiting many years it is difficult to be objective isn't it? We Procol fans live from famine to feast. Hearing Well's on Fire (and anxiously awaiting the song by that name) and hearing the band on tour on San Francisco (an amazing experience) reminds me of many things - first and foremost that Procol Harum is about music - about where it comes from and where it is. To hear Handel reset by Brooker is an amazing musical moment and the the signature piece at the end is a truly moving musical statement. We can only hope that the next album (and US tour) are months in the future and not years. Procol Harum is about an incredible combination of words and music. May they live forever...

I just bought Procol Harum's latest album The Well's On Fire, along with Deep Purple's latest album, Bananas (import) and couldn't have had a more one sided listening experience.

Two of my favorite bands seem to be going in different directions and I`m not talking musical. I can't believe how weak The Well's On Fire is, the playing lacks spark and the songs simply aren't good or memorable. The arrangements are typical been there, done that and Procol Harum just don't sound like their having much fun! When the disc ended I knew I wouldn't be in a hurry to play it again any time soon.

On the contrary, Deep Purple's new album is everything Procol Harum's isn't. Great songs, unbelievable performances and the band sound like they are having FUN! Plus, the running order of the album is just outstanding. I've played Bananas10 times as much as Procol Harum's latest.

It's safe to say this is not Procol Harum's finest hour, but it might be Deep Purple`s.

3 out of 5 stars New Procol will please old fans, but won't win many new ones.......2003-05-28

If you look through the reviews here, you will see many longtime Procol fans are enjoying this album, the first since 1991's "The Prodigal Stranger". I don't hear the big improvement over "Prodigal" that a lot of others do. This album doesn't have the glossy Album-Oriented-Rock production that "Prodigal" did, but overall I found that album's songs catchier. It's great to hear Gary Brooker, one of the best voices in rock, again, and I hope I don't have to wait another dozen years for their next album. But "Well's on Fire" doesn't come close to the five stars I'd give to the "Whiter Shade of Pale" or "Salty Dog" albums. If you're not already a Procol fan, this album probably won't make you one, and isn't the place to start exploring this band.

Pianist/singer Brooker, organist Matthew Fisher, and lyricist Keith Reid remain from early Procol, joined by "Prodigal" drummer Mark Brzezicki, bassist Matt Pegg (son of Fairport Convention's Dave), and guitarist Geoff Whitehorn (who can do a decent Robin Trower impersonation). There's no standout track here, no song that really makes your ears jump to attention. My favorite tracks are the jittery "Shadow Boxed", bluesy "The VIP Room" and "Every Dog Will Have His Day", and classic rock "So Far Behind". Reid's lyrics aren't as off-the-wall as in the past, but he provides some nice social commentary on tracks like "The Question" and "This World Is Rich". A couple of the more thoughtful lyrics are matched with boring music, though, such as "The Emperor's New Clothes" and the 9/11-inspired "The Blink of an Eye". "Weisselklenzenacht" ends the album with a big, building Fisher instrumental, in the manner of "Repent Walpurgis".

    As an avid classical music listener, and cellist, Classical Heat was the perfect blend of energized, fast-paced works, and then on the second disk, a more mellow, yet still firey, works. I would recommend this CD set to every classical listener, even people that don't normally like the classical genre will enjoy this cd.

    Trumpet blasts, french horn flares, all the way to the subtle reeds of the bassoon. This album will keep you interested and awake all the way through.     I am so glad I have this wonderful CD of Christmas songs with bells. The bells are truly played as one instrument and you can really get into the Christmas spirit. It's so hard to record bells well, but they did it! I always tell my friends to BUY this CD to add to their Christmas music collection. In fact, I give the CDs away as gifts! A GREAT RECORDING!

    While we all associate bells with Christmas, we think more of bells ringing wildly in their towers. And when we think of Christmas music, we think schmaltz. This album features a different kind of bells -- handbells -- and music that is anything but schmaltzy. As I listen to this beautiful, seamless music, I am in awe of the skills required to make it sound that way: a dozen people handling dozens of bells, sounding as one instrument. The musical selections are varied, the performance top-notch, and the experience of listening is marvelous. I do not hesitate to recommend this CD to any listener.

    Sonos is very accomplished, yes, and they play what they do very well, but nothing really appealed to me as "exciting" bell music. I have nothing against classical music, but they need perhaps faster songs or something of that sort. Other than that, it was great!

    "Christmas with Sonos Handbell Ensemble" continues the tradition of excellent playing and fine engineering pioneered on Sonos' first disc. The repertoire runs the gamut, but leans toward the quiet, mellow carols and tunes, and the other instruments featured (flute & clarinet) are perfectly balanced and blended with the overall sound. The acoustic is marvelous, greatly benefitting from the superb room at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and audiophile-quality production.

    Of special interest is the bluesy/gospel "Christmas Tidings" (Mary Had a Baby Boy/Go Tell It On the Mountain) with clarinet, the lovely "Panis Angelicus" with flute, and a quirky arrangement of "Carol of the Bells," which does not do what you expect! There's the ever-popular nutcracker, along with the Leroy Anderson's hit "Sleigh Ride." A moody "Veni Emmanuel" is paired with a mediaeval-sounding "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen." There's even a little Prokofiev: the "Troika" (another kind of sleigh ride), from Lt. Kije.

    This CD is great for parties and background music but can also be brought up and appreciated for its detail and finer qualities. A rare combination.
