5 out of 5 stars One of the 80s era-defining peerless albums.......2006-10-28

It's really hard to articulate the sheer sense of excitement felt upon the original LP release of this album - surely one of the best, era-defining, utterly peerless albums of the 80s - I can still recall unwrapping the shrinkwrap back in the 1980 and putting it on my turntable - ANTMUSIC, DOG EAT DOG, PRESS DARLINGS, on & on - the hits don't stop - a visionary, clever, hilarious, dead-cool amalgam of Bolan/Bowie glam posturing ignited with post-punk style and a dose of fable-like mythology - the look, the sound, the entire package came together for the first (and last time) here. Over 25 years later, KINGS still sounds more fresh, immediate, and just plain FUN that anything on the radio in 2006. Sad, but true. Now where oh where is the DVD anthology with all of the Ants' videos?!

5 out of 5 stars Ants Invasion.......2005-12-30

This album, which held the #1 spot on the UK chart for most of 1981 (though only reaching #44 on the US chart), is simply Adam & the Ants' greatest achievement. It starts of with the fantastic, upbeat & ecstatic 'Dogeatdog', a UK #4/US #15 smash. The song takes a while to get used to, but when you finally get it, it will blow you away.
'Antmusic', a UK #2/US #14 single, was Adam & the Ants big breakthrough, & the only single that was able to reach a respectable chart position during the post-murder Lennon craze of christmas 1980. Being kept of the top spot by the songs of the tragically murdered prophet of his generation, 'Antmusic' nonetheless, broke Adam & the Ants internationally, & desrvedly so, for it is among his best & catchiest songs. New listeners, start with that song, for it will get you in the first listen.

After these two songs, the record suddenly gets very dark. Actually the album is a pretty dark affair, with 'Los Rancheros' & especially 'Feed Me To The Lions' bringing visions of a Bowiesque post-apocalyptic landscape to mind. 'Press Darlings' is another catchy classic followed by 'Ants Invasion' & 'Killer In The Home', that follow up the apocalyptic tension. 'Kings Of The Wild Frontier' itself, a UK #2 hit following the #9 placing of the non-album 'Young Parisians', is the strangest song on the strangest record. Indeed. There is nothing else to say about that song (later `Ant Rap' would follow up on this tradition of taking Adam & the Ants' weirdest songs into the UK top 3).

`The Magnificent Five', `Don't Be Square (Be There)' & `Jolly Roger' (the name signifies the direction Adam & the Ants would take on their next record) are somewhat average Adam & the Ants songs (though such a thing doesn't exist). `Jolly Roger' jumps from brooding to a parody of singalong every 15 seconds or so. They are all great songs, & carry the hilarious/apocalyptic mood up to `Physical (You're So)', a #19 hit in the US, but never released as a single in the Ant homeland of the UK. Truly one of his best songs, it is also one of his darkest, carried by a paranoid guitar feedback. It leads into `The Human Beings', another misty dark song, which scares you into laugter... or?... well, it sounded good. A strange chorus carries the tune & ends this most fascinating & brilliant album.

5 out of 5 stars Adam Rules!!!!!.......2005-07-28

This album, like all the rest of his albums, ROCKS!!!! He will always be my favorite artist. If only Adam can see this, I'd wanna thank him for being one of the best entertainers of all time! Long live the kings of the wild frontier!!!

5 out of 5 stars BOLAN OF THE 80'S.......2004-12-31

Along with Human Leagues "Dare" and Soft Cells "Non stop", Kings has to be the best album of the 80's, it is Adams masterpiece and sadley never matched. One of Adam's main influences was Marc Bolan which is very apparent in his work, I remember seeing him on Top of the pops in 1980 performing Dog eat dog, it wasn't some pop star miming to their latest record, this was a performance full of energy and originality, which paved the way for the New Romantic movement of the early 80's for stars like Human League, Culure Club and Duran Duran. I remember having the leather trousers, frilly shirt and a white stripe (and nearly getting beat up for it), it was a great time in British pop music, a great time for British youth venturing out to the clubs and bars, the guys dressed as Adam, Simon Le Bonn or as a Numaniod (Gary Numan) and the girls like the Human League girls and possibly the last time British youth had individuality. Personally however, Adam's follow up "Prince Charming" never did it for me, the two singles were great but he had really sold himself out to capture the under tens market which lasted a few months, however Kings of the Wild Frontier remains a great snap shot of a great period in British pop fashion and movement.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sheer brilliance.......2007-06-22

When GM was with Thin Lizzy, they churned out some amazing music. I saw the "Black Rose" tour with TL at the Apollo Theater in Glasgow (the ULTIMATE venue to see any rock band in the 70s) Moore was simply amazing. This album, for me continues where he left off. The Celtic imagery and nuances that permeate this album define it for what it is. The sort of stuff that TL did brilliantly, songs like Emerald, Black Rose, on this album that style of music is taken to new levels with a passion. GM has taken on the Celtic Rock mantle passed to him bt Phil Lynott.

There is not one bad track on this album Listen to it with the volume at 10, and dont apologise - you are educating your neighbours! Favourite track is the instrumental "The Loner" -there are shades of "Parisienne Walkways" to this track - the guitar playing is something else, it really is in a class of its own. The guitar literally has its neck wrung to get some of these high notes. Buy it, play it, appreciate it. 5 stars dont do it justice.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar guitar work and songwriting.......2007-01-27

So, I finally picked up a copy of this classic album. I literally haven't heard it since I owned the cassette version more than 15 years ago. This album is every bit as good as I remember, if not better. The guitar work is simply stellar and the songwriting is top-notch as there is not a bad song on this disc. "Wild Frontier" is a rarity in that the 12" versions are often better than the original album tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Another Gary Moore Masterpiece.......2006-07-07

THE WILD FRONTIER is another Gary Moore masterpiece. Many of the songs here have Irish-related themes, which may make them hard to understand, but if you eat enough foods rich in B-vitamins and omega-3 oils, and then listen VERY HARD, you can relate them to universal issues with which all of us can identify. In other words, THE WILD FRONTIER is an album that will give you what you want, if you let it give you what you need.

4 out of 5 stars Another Gary Moore masterpiece!!!.......2006-05-10

As Gary throws us another curve ball, he prooves that he can indeed reinvent himself over and over again.

On this outing, Gary shows us he doesn't need a drummer. That's right, nothing but drum machines on this one, but you'd be hard pressed to hear it as such. The drum progamming on this is nothing short of brilliance. I wonder if a drummer did the programming?

While this album does have some leanings toward's his previous album "Run For Cover", it shows us some new direction for Gary. A Celtic/Irish feel permiates most of the album and as usual, Gary's guitar playing does nothing short of amaze and astonish. The man can simply play that guitar second to none. :)

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album.......2005-07-12

I only write reviews for my favorite albums and after 20 years this album is still at the top of my list and Loner is my favorite track. One thing though: is that a wild frontier or farmland behind Moore on the cover?

5 out of 5 stars WHOLE FAMILY FAVORITE!.......2005-03-19

My two sons love Davy Crockett, so when we saw the Riders in the Sky in concert and heard this CD would be coming out we could hardly wait. The CD didn't disappoint us a bit, except maybe that it left us wanting more. Includes wonderful versions of the Crockett songs you've heard before such as the all famous "Ballad," "King of the River," and "Farewell," and new songs written by the Riders like "Headin' for Texas" (beautiful!). I highly recommend this! Brings back fond memories of the days when Davy was huge, and introduces a great hero to our children today, someone willing to fight for what's right ("Be Sure You're Right, And Then Go Ahead").

We take the Riders with us on vacation everywhere we go. They are fun for the whole family to sing along, and if nothing else, our attempts at their yodel techniques are quite entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars FUn nostalgia trip.......2004-12-18

This is a fun nostalgia trip for boomers who grew up playing cowboys and indians and those of us who are younger who grew up with Disney LPs and song records- truly great fun. A note here- the Ballad of Davy Crockett was a top selling number one hit in the 50s for its singer- BIll Hayes known today for his role as Doug WIlliams on the soap Days of Our Lives. Bill has an accomplished career in music, stage and song as well as soaps.

        5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!!!!.......2007-03-11

I bought this as a replacement for a record album (vinyl LP) and I am very pleased with it. The sound quality is excellent. Don't buy this for the extras (demo stuff), they really aren't worthwhile. Get the Stand and Deliver DVD with all the music videos from amazon.uk I am not expecting a US release of that DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful issue with it's share of short-comings..........2006-04-23

This could have been the definitive issue - in fact it probably is. It is THE definitive Adam And The Ants record (although my personal fave is still Dirk Wears White Sox). The U.S. Epic issue of the original CBS version added two B-Sides ("Press Darlings" and "Physical (You're So)"). They were the U.K. B-Sides to "Kings Of The Wild Frontier" and "Dog Eat Dog", respectively (the B-Side to "Antmusic" was "Fall In"). So in fact, those songs don't have much business being on the original issue considering Epic stuck them on there after the album was already issued (in the U.K.).

This remastered issue is incredible. The drums have never sounded as rightfully booming as they do on this CD. I highly recommend any Ant fan to pick this up. And if you have never heard this CD - it's easily one of the most original New-Wave records ever released. Quite a feat considering the general variety and diversity of most New-Wave records (in my humble opinion).

Sony has to get it together an release a definitive B-Side collection which includes "Press Darlings" (1994's B-Side Babies included "Physical" and "Fall In yet stupidly overlooked "Press Dalings" thus negating any "definitive" aspect to it.

        "Dirk Wears White Sox!!"

4 out of 5 stars That music's lost its taste, try another flavor........2006-01-29

Better than "Dirk Wears White Sox", but not quite the sensational album fans or others might have you believe. This is a good album, but the remastering is probably the weakest of the remastered series. It still sounds rather quiet to me. There are more memorable songs here like "Antmusic", "Los Rancheros", "Dog Eat Dog", "Jolly Roger", "Kings Of The Wild Frontier", but the album as a whole is still uneven.

It was remarkable how he changed his sound and image though, and even more amazing that it all worked. Something like that could not be achieved in today's fickle market. The graphic design of the remastered package is great and ties into all the other remasters. The packaging is digipak, and the information booklet has all the lyrics. While I understand that fans would have liked Adam's memoirs on the album, I really didn't mind.

There are six bonus tracks, and I couldn't tell the difference between the original "Antmusic" and the alternate take. The rest are demo versions of songs on the album. I think this is the weakest album for bonus tracks. They do nothing to add to the pleasure of the listening experience and I agree with others that they should have included "Press Darlings" and "Physical" from the American release.

        Overall, a good album.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazon.com's tracklisting is wrong!.......2005-03-12

Hopefully Amazon will post a correction soon, but as of 11 March '05, the tracklisting here is incorrect. The correct tracklisting is:

        1. Dog Eat Dog
        2. 'Antmusic'
        3. Feed Me To The Lions
        4. Los Rancheros
        5. Ants Invasion
        6. Killer In The Home
        7. Kings Of The Wild Frontier

        12. The Human Beings
        13. Antmusic (Demo)
        14. Antmusic (Demo)
        15. Feed Me To The Lions (Demo)
        16. The Human Beings (Demo)
        17. S.E.X. (Demo)
        18. The Omlette From Outerspace (Early Version Of Ants Invasion - Unreleased Song Demo)

Amazon's UK site has the correct info.

Note that the alternate tracks from the original US release are not included on this CD (?!): Press Darlings and Physical. (The version of Physical on the Dirk remaster is the earlier Do It version.) Seems like a really weird decision, especially since the 1998 Sony remaster includes both of these tracks...

4 out of 5 stars "It's Your Money That We Want and Your Money We Shall Have!".......2005-01-31

Adam and the Ants' second release, 1980's "Kings of the Wild Frontier," was a mammoth hit in the UK where it went Number One for an incredible 12 weeks on the album chart. The band's sound boldly clashed British punk with African tribal rhythms, and the formula resulted in the hits "Antmusic," "Dog Eat Dog," and the dynamic title track. Other album cuts that shared the same brash energy of those singles are the catchy "Jolly Roger" and "The Magnificent Five." Nearly a quarter century since its release, "Kings of the Wild Frontier" gets digitally remastered and repackaged with bonus tracks. The remastering is pretty decent, and the CD is presented in a digipak with a nice booklet containing lyrics and rare photos. In addition, we get a handful of demo and rare tracks that will likely appeal to diehard Ant fans. But don't throw out your previous copy of "Kings of the Wild Frontier" yet. Much to my disappointment, this new edition omits two key tracks that appeared on the old version: "Press Darlings" and "Physical (You're So)." Why they're not on this album (or at least added as bonus tracks) is a mystery and is a big mistake on Sony's part, and as you can see from the reviews below mine, I'm not alone in my opinion. Still, this remastered version is a good way to introduce new listeners to one of the most successful British albums of the 1980s.

        4 out of 5 stars Fairly unique.......2003-04-24

This is true Alaskana. That should be enough. It's hard to genrify this music. To a degree it owes a debt to Alaskan "tourist music" as typified by people like Steve Hites from Haines Junction, to Christian music, and to the Alaska Folk Festival scene. It might have been more Alaskanish if there was some of the roots rock that gets played (especially by native Alaskans) in the small town bars all over Alaska, but this would be great soundtrack music for a movie version of John McPhee's "Coming into the Country."

All the tracks are worth listening to, although the attempt to polish them overly harms the DIY feeling of the album. A lot of tracks, "Buffalo Soldiers" or argonauts or jack london are kind of inside unless you know who the buffalo soldiers were, or about alaskan boats or about jack london and the yukon. Since this is going to hit a mostly country audience that's in a way flattering assuming they have some academic knowledge.

The cut that seems to be played most on country stations is "Out There" which is too out there to take seriously. It's Pat Robertson/militia nut nonsense, even though it has probably the best melody and instrumentation. All the rest of the tracks are normal.

BTW this is not roots rock and not comparable to "the Band" at all (as the lybot review said). The Band had a firm blues heritage. On the contrary, it's the unique blend of influences and the novelty of style that makes Wild Frontier worth listening to.

          Album Description

Frontier Free For All is the debut disc for the rockin' rodeo band, Wild Horses. The group is led by a dynamic female vocalist, Angela Rae, whose voice shines on selections from traditional country to southern rock. Full harmonies highlight this group and their electric stage presence transfers well to disc.

This CD is a MUST BUY! The title says it all. Frontier Free For All is just that. I have known and loved this band for over 12 years personally and they are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. The music that they play and write comes straight from the heart. If you ever get a chance to see them live, take it! You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars One CD for Everyone to Enjoy.......2004-04-24

This band is absolutely awesome. From their first days together to today they have always been great. Each and everyone of them, Steve, Angela, Michael, and Ralph put their heart and soul into their music and show their fans how to have fun with it. This CD is terrific, I never go anywhere without it. I hope that someday they will have many more and I can then have a whole shelf full of nothing but WILD HORSES. To those of you who have never heard this CD go get it. It will lift your spirits, bring tears to your eyes, and get your feet a tappin all on this one CD. I hope everyone gets theirs soon.

This is a great C.D.!!! Anglea Rae has a beautiful unique voice and you can feel the emotion that she puts into each song. My favorite cut is Safely Home, it is a wonderfully written song and really pulls at your heart strings. Wild Horses is a band that has worked hard and I hope their greatest success is just around the corner.
