Fantastic - a must-have for the serious Beatles fan........2007-05-16
Though I am certain that there is some material missing from the actual performance on this CD, what is here is fantastic- fairly clear, considering the conditions under which they were recorded, and a vital look at The Beatles in their early years. "Shimmy Shake" is an amazing piece to hear them perform... so different than the material that made them famous. I wish the CD was complete, but what is here is fantastic. If you're serious about The Beatles, you NEED this CD!
incomplete concert!!.......2007-02-27
I HAD the original two-LP set; my favorite song was the one chosen as the opener for the LP: "Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry Over You". With THAT song missing! this CD is pointless to me. When are they gonna release the WHOLE thing??!
The Magical Mystery Tour.......2006-09-21
The Star Club performance has bounced around in some form since the 1970s, initially as a double-album import on the Lingasong Records label. The sound quality was very rough, but the liner notes and photographs were outstanding and the gig featured the lineup with Ringo on drums.
The historical significance was immense and I believe it still remains the earliest released live recording of the Fab Four. If I recall, The Beatles were unaware that the gig was being recorded and plans to release the performance once Beatlemania swept through England was nixed because of the poor sound quality.
The tape was stored for years in a Liverpool office - certainly not helping to retain the already bootleg-like recording - and was recovered from a building that was slated to be torn down by original Beatles manager Allan Williams. He sold the recording to Lingasong.
It then got interesting once the double-album was released in Europe and available as an import in the U.S. The record company ended up in litigation over ownership issues of the tape and I last saw the performance split into two separate albums on another record label.
And the Star Club performance seems to have a lifespan tied to the court system; it pops up in some form, then becomes unavailable due to a tug-of-war, only to resurface again years later.
But through it all it remains a gem, since there are few opportunities to hear the early stages of what became the British Invasion.
Someone release ALL the Beatles Live in Hamburg recordings on ONE COLLECTION---Please!.......2006-07-29
I bought "The Beatles Live! at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962" as a double vinyl album back in the late 1970s. It was on some label called Lingasong. Back then, I didn't even know that any such recordings existed, so I was thrilled. I absolutely loved it (raw, relaxed & loose, with the Beatles sounding more than a little looped, goofing and interacting with the crowd), though I later heard a lot of criticism about the sound quality. True, the recordings weren't professionally made---so what? That's all there is. Later on I discovered that "I Saw Her Standing There", "Ask Me Why", and "Twist And Shout" were also recorded at that time, when I found (and purchased) yet another vinyl packaging of the recordings. Looks like the only thing I'm missing so far is "Hully Gully", unless somebody's sitting on some more recordings somewhere out there in Pepperland.
My problem with the above collection is that it is missing 7 songs from the 1962 live performance(s): "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry Over You", "Where Have You Been All My Life", "Besame Mucho", "'Till There Was You", "Little Queenie", "Be-Bop-A-Lula", and "Hallelujah I Love Her So", which are on that first double vinyl I bought. I would definitely miss them.
Yes, I know some of those missing are on another CD, but rather than trying to chase down stray songs hither and thither with a butterfly net in one hand and money in the other, I think I'll just transfer my vinyls to CD. Seems a lot less trouble.
I wish somebody would just get off the pot and release the whole dang performance and be done with it. I mean, IT'S BEEN 44 YEARS. They were a social phenomenon, a revolution in pop music; this is History.
Make it a box set, with Astrid's photos of them performing. Yeah, right. I am so sure...
I have another novel idea: They could even sequence the songs in the order in which they were played, instead of chopping them out and reassembling them like Frankenstein's monster. Leave more of the crowd sounds in, too. I wouldn't mind.

Please do not be misled by previous reviews. These recordings were made in December, 1962. Pete Best was let go in August, 1962, and Stuart Sutcliffe died in April of '62. The Beatles at these recordings were John, Paul, George and Ringo. If anyone wants to hear Pete's drumming, I suggest the Decca Sessions, which are now widely available.

A GREAT RARE PIECE OF ROCK 'N' ROLL HISTORY!!!.......2006-06-27
I will be doing a review on the classic now out of print CD "LIVE AT THE STAR CLUB IN HAMBURG GERMANY 1962" by The Beatles. Many rock critics have said in the past that this rare recording was one of the first "Live" Beatles recordings ever. This 1985 CD release marks the FIRST TIME that The Beatles Live At The Star Club In Hamburg Germany 1962 ever saw fruitation on CD. I will be editing this review from time to time so that you the consumers will get the best accurate review possible. I own an original copy of this CD which I purchased from Tower Records in Sacramento, California in 1985. I will describe this CD for you in full detail before I go into the sound quality. This live recording according to author Mark Lewisohn (The Beatles: Recording Sessions and Day By Day 1962-1989) and fellow reviewer John Sposato, was recorded on 31 December 1962. For historic purposes, also according to author Mark Lewisohn, The Beatles flew to Hamburg, Germany on 18 December 1962 and on that evening gave the opening performance in their final Hamburg season, at the Star Club which runs until 31 December 1962. Prior to 31 December 1962, there are no known recordings of any kind of the Star Club concerts. However, on 31 December 1962, on the final night, The Beatles final performance is taped and released on record in 1977. The CD was released on the Teichiku Records Label in 1985. The matrix number is 38CP-44. The inner front sleeve of the CD shows a very young George (with guitar), Paul and John in a black and white photo performing live. The Beatles is printed in big red letters on the upper right hand side of the sleeve with Live at the Star Club in Hamburg Germany 1962 printed in small red letters underneath The Beatles. The matrix number 38CP-44 is also printed in white in the upper right hand corner. A small white globe which says Overseas Records is printed on the bottom left hand corner. The back sleeve is colored in light green and contains a picture of The Star Club. All 32 tracks are printed in black and are as follows:
(1.) Introduction, (2.) I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry (Over You), (3.) I Saw Her Standing There, (4.) Roll Over Beethoven, 5.) Hippy Hippy Shake, (6.) Sweet Little Sixteen, (7.) Lend Me Your Comb, (8.) Your Feet's Too Big, (9.) Twist And Shout, (10.) Mr. Moonlight, (11.) A Taste Of Honey, (12.) Besame Mucho, 13.) Reminiscing, (14.) Kansas City - Hey Hey Hey, (15.) Where Have You Been All My Life, (16.) Hully Gully, (17.) Till There Was You, (18.) Nothin' Shakin' (But The Leaves On The Trees), (19.) To Know Her Is To Love Her, (20.) Little Queenie, (21.) Falling In Love Again, (22.) Ask Me Why, (23.) Be-Bop-A-Lula, (24.) Hallelujah I love Her So, (25.) Sheila, (26.) Red Sails In The Sunset, (27.) Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby, (28.) Matchbox, (29.) I'm Talking About You, (30.) Shimmy Shake, (31.) Long Tall Sally, (32.) I Remember You
All 32 Tracks as well The Beatles Live At The Star Club In Hamburg Germany are printed in blue on the disc itself. As to the performance and sound quality of this CD, the performance is OUTSTANDING. The sound quality was not great considering the recording technology used in 1962. Overall, you can still hear the performance very well and really appreciate that this historic concert is part of Rock 'N' Roll history. John Lennon once said that The Beatles best live concerts were NEVER recorded. This CD may very well be the BEST LIVE RECORDING THAT THE BEATLES HAVE EVER DONE! Sadly, this CD is now long out of print and is the ONLY ORIGINAL recording with the BEST sound quality available. There have been many other Live At The Star Club CD's that have surfaced or been released (In BOOTLEG Form) but with bad sound quality. I would highly reccommend this CD if you can find it. The Beatles will forever go down in Rock 'n' Roll history as the GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME, need I say more? I hope you enjoyed reading my long review and I hope you will read all my other reviews in the future. "THE BEATLES FOREVER!" Take care. J.L.
The end of one era and the start of another.......2005-12-16
This album, along with the Tony Sheridan tapes, both recorded in Hamburg, (then West, of course) Germany, has been reissued and even renamed by many labels over the past forty-odd years.
Perfomed on 31 December 1962 at the Star Club, where Jerry Lee Lewis and later Man have cut their chops. The Beatles had recently signed that elusive Parlophone/EMI contract back home, and released "Love Me Do", which peaked at #17 on most charts (not bad for starters then). I actually have the original US 1977 LP on Lingasong, as well as a UK cassette of the first half. I used to have the 1991 Sony tapes, but I didn't need them anymore, so I gave them away. The initial release was tied up in the US and English courts for some time, understandably, including an official EMI release of the Hollywood Bowl at the time. Ted "Kingsize" Taylor, whose band were also performing at the Star Club and Reeperbahn (sic?) in the early '60s, recorded it with a reel-to-reel tape machine with a mono microphone. It sounded muffled like it was recorded in a cardboard box! Numerous efforts were made to make a silk purse from a sow's ear, but some still complain that it's far too old to be made decent, but this is all that could be done in those days, used with equipment that would now be in a flea market or the Smithsonian! Die hard fans like moi can appreciate that this cheaply made recording is available to us; this moment in time can be cherished for generations to come. The rest, of course, is history.
