4 out of 5 stars Four Stars for Any Kiss Fan.......2007-06-11

Although it is great that classic Kiss albums like this are available on CD now, there is a little of the original magic missing. Kiss Alive II is a perfect example of this. The CD does feature several studio tracks; however, the Live portion of Kiss Alive II is what makes this great. If you want the best, you got the best, the hottest band in the world.... Kiss. The Shock Me offereing on this CD is one of the gems for those of us that favored Ace. He was always my favorite, but each member has at least one standout moment on this CD. A must have for Kiss fans. I wore this album out as a pre-eenager, and as a teenager, and a little as an adult.

    5 out of 5 stars KISS Alive in 1977 = AWESOME!.......2007-05-30

The problem with this record and all other live records after it, is that it will forever be compared to 1975's perfect "Alive!" If one looks at this record for what it is...it is very very good. It sounds phenomenal - more agressive and hard rocking than ever. I think the studio side of new material was cool, but I wish that stuff could have been turned into a KISS album for 1978. But I know that couldn't have happened because at this point they were starting to want to kill each other. I would have loved to see "Hooligan" "Take Me" "Do you Love Me" included here. But...die hards are always going to want more in the set list. Taken for what it is...Alive II is a real live masterpiece and really kicks serious butt. The highlights are "King of the Night Time World" "Shock Me" - which includes the greatest live solo ever from Ace, and the most demonic, high speed version of "God of Thunder". The studio cuts are all great especially Ace's "Rocket Ride" and Gene's "Larger Than Life". But I like "All American Man" as well. More songs they should have been playing live!!

3 out of 5 stars not the best.......2007-05-30

I wish this version was the complete concert. The studio tracks don't cut the mustard

4 out of 5 stars Loved it as Kid, not much has changed.......2007-03-25

Been surfing around today on a KISS internet wave. Have come accross the comments about the live albums not being 'live'. Well, i've heard and agree, but still love em, they work, they are exciting, and entertaining..

Now for all the complainers out there... this is old hat business now. Put on any video from corporate... overproduced beyond anything live can provide, and then there are the 'live' vids, which load in screaming audience noise at keen times... in fact this happened back in the early days of MTV... CMT is particularly bad at displaying this tact. KISS did it, possibly first. It worked, and was good. I got lot's of contact high from Alive! and AliveII!.

Relax, just don't drink the koolaid. and enjoy it. Music is basically harmonious noise. Enjoy!!

4 out of 5 stars My favorite live Kiss album!!!.......2006-06-29

This was the VERY FIRST Kiss album I ever owned. So it's not too hard to see why it's my favorite. Whe I took it home, pulled the shrink wrap off, and pulled out the booklet and tattoos while Detroit Rock City was playing, I was sold!! I was only 11 years old, but that didn't matter at all...in my eyes, I knew what the world was all about!!!

The album contains a great variety of tunes from their previous three studio releases following their FIRST live album Alive. But the thing that really tops this album in my opinion are the 5 studio tracks at the end of the album. The strength and construction of the tunes really show just how hot Kiss was at that time. Interestingly enough, those tracks weren't a true group effort. Ace Frehley only played on one of the five tracks, Rocket Ride while studio guitar whiz Bob Kulick (the brother of their future lead guitarist Bruce Kulick) handled the rest...and quite well I might add.
Why 4 instead of 5, well, I am just not too thrilled with the mix of the album. The album is in desperate need of remixing prior to remastering. Quite honestly, it sounds terrible. I bought the remaster thinking that it would have cleared the sound a little, and it did to some extent, but not much. The cd doesn't sound much different from the vinyl. Maybe Paul and Gene will someday bring someone in and totally remix it, plus add the tracks that were originally part of the album like Take Me, Hooligan and a few others.
All in all, I can totally overlook the mix. After all, when I put it on I just sit back and pretend it's the summer of 1977 again and let the good times roll....sometimes I air guitar to it as well...at almost 40 years of age I still pretend to be Ace Frehley when Shock Me comes on...only this time I don't have that tennis racket...come to think of it...what ever happened to that thing?!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

    4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

    5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

The stars of this recording are Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music, entertaining us with rarely-heard instrumental pieces receiving their first modern performances with the endearing poignancy inherent in Purcell's music. McNair's gracile voice and accurate, easy-going coloratura capture the lyricism of Purcell's songs, but none of the subtext's vibrant passion. Emotional variety and vocal color are lacking when she repeatedly calls for Gabriel in "Tell Me, Some Pitying Angel." Still, McNair's light and pure soprano is enjoyable in small doses. When three or four plaintiff songs are programmed back to back, however, the monotony presents a fabulous opportunity to lull insomniacs back to sleep. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Normally I run in the opposite direction of any baroque music - thought I had heard it all and had enough, but I love Slyvia McNair and I wanted to hear more of her recordings. This recording was such a wonderful surprise, not only interms of McNair's performance but interms of the overall presentation (organization of the pieces) and the energy of the performances by the AAM. I have new-found appreciation of Purcell's music!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs.......2003-01-12

When I listened to this CD, I fell in love with Sylvia McNair's artistic and beautiful voice along with Henry Purcell's music. This CD offers a style of music that I love to listen to and sing with. There is a mixture of instrumental only and vocal pieces. When I listen to this CD I feel like I have been transported to the late 1600s. The title "The Echoing Air" appropriately describes the beauty of this music.

    Product Description

The fifth collection culled from the annual VH1 Divas specials is a little too genteel. Maybe because the producers are now old hands at pairing up pop's biggest female singers, and they know how to avoid potential fireworks. But it's the fireworks that make these records sizzle. Who can forget Elton John's rendition of "The Bitch Is Back" on the 1999 edition? Except for the rendition of AC/DC's "You Shook Me," inexplicably assigned to Celine Dion and disco revivalist Anastacia, which features blistering guitar by Meredith ("Bitch") Brooks, none of the cuts crackle. Cher's dance floor hit "I Believe" sounds canned and forced, and Latin firecracker Shakira goes low-key with an acoustic version of her soft-focus "Underneath Your Clothes." Even the vivacious Dixie Chicks can't rescue the record with their performance of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide," complete with Stevie Nicks. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Divas Las Vegas........2007-04-12

    Really enjoyable special.
The highlights would have to be Cher's and Celine Dions performances.
Cher performs Believe and A Song for the Lonely and knocks them dead.
Celine performs Im Alive and A New Day Has Come and practically brings the house down. She was superb.
Other artist were good also, in particular Anastacia.
Very interesting to watch and great to own.

This blessed my soul! One of those CD's that you will play over and over again to inspire and strengthen your daily walk.

5 out of 5 stars A praise and worship experience!!!!!!.......2006-07-15

When I was a kid growing up in the early 80's my aunt would play this album like clock work every Sabbath (Saturday) morning, it was how I knew it was time to get up and get ready for church. I learned how to sing by imitating the vocalists on this album (got me a solo with the adult chior singing Right On @ the age of 8 Holla! shoot you couldn't tell me I wasn't Lynette Hawkins LOL ). This album will warm your heart and soul and elevate your worship experience. Yeah I like some of the new gospel that's out but stuff like this is classic, and every song is good. You will not have to worry about skipping to the next song because every song is the JAM!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Gospel At Its Best.......2005-07-15

Love Alive 2 is foot-stomping, pure gospel brought forth by melodic sounding voices. Walter Hawkins is one of my favorite male gospel singers. I have all of the Love Alive recordings. If you want to bring the high praises of God into your home, then this is the CD to get.

    5 out of 5 stars A Musical Blessing............2003-01-31

As a child, I used to listen to the LP over and over again. Years ago, when my family moved I lost the LP. It wasn't until recently, when I heard a pastor reference the song "Be Grateful", that I remembered how much I loved that song and how it ministered to my spirit as a child. I'm so grateful that I checked Amazon because I purchased it right away and have been listening to it everyday. Every song is a blessing. "Be Grateful" is still my favorite song in the entire world ("He's That Kind of Friend" is a very close second favorite!). Buy this CD -- you won't be sorry -- and you will be blessed!

5 out of 5 stars These Are Now The Timeless "Classics".......2002-06-04

I was a teenager when Love Alive II was released. I was and still am mezmerized when I hear the gift of Anointed Songs that come through Walter Hawkins.

Not only that, but the songs that were popular in the 70's are now considered "classics"--and rightfully so. The Message is timeless and the rhythm and style is PURE Hawkins!

I never tire of hearing Tramaine sing "He's That Kind Of Friend" or my favorite "grueling" singer Lynette Hawkins belt out "Be Grateful." Each member of the Hawkins Family has their own unique way. Feddie Hawkins is not left out either, because she sings the song I know God has done and continues to do for me on a daily basis--"God Will Open Doors."

Any Gospel Music lover should have a copy of this in your collection.
