It took a screaming group of Japanese fans to make Cheap Trick into bona fide stars in their own country. The live version of "I Want You to Want Me" propelled the band on its way to a number of hits through the late '70s and then again in the '80s. Characterized by melodies so strong they were achingly familiar, the band's Beatles-esque harmonies and breaks made memorable moments out of "Surrender," "Dream Police," and later hits like the rocking ballad, "The Flame." Their outstanding cover of "Don't Be Cruel" became one of the only Presley covers to crack the top 10. Equally impressive is their cover of "Ain't That a Shame." Greatest Hits would play better as a well thought out "Best of" collection. While the songs included on the CD did show some chart action, some of their best work ("He's a Whore," "Heaven Tonight") is nowhere to be found in this compilation. It's almost worth it to spend the money on Cheap Trick's first three CDs--it's worth the investment and song for song, a better listen than Greatest Hits. --Steve Gdula

4 out of 5 stars Great intro to a great band, if a bit lightweight.......2005-08-09

Cheap Trick always seemed like three bands rolled up into one, and most of their career has been spent trying to find a balance between the different styles. You have your Beatlesque power pop tunes, which brought the band deserved hits in the 70's and a place in the heart of indie rockers from Nirvana to Guided by Voices. You have the 80's AOR years, filled with ballads that are musically pleasing with great choruses but artistically less interesting, and often heavily produced. And finally, you have the side of the band that was capable of cranking out menacing rockers with dark lyrics such as "Auf Wiedersehen" and "I'm Not The Only Boy".

While the third side of Cheap Trick is pretty much ignored here, the first two are covered pretty well. There's a decent cover of "Magical Mystery Tour" here, though it seems like the boys are rocking by rote rather than adding anything new to the song. All of the big hits are here, including the two songs that guaranteed Cheap Trick their place in the classic rock pantheon - "Surrender" and "I Want You To Want Me".

If you're looking for a disc that captures Cheap Trick as you heard them on the radio, this is a good single-disc encapsulation of their biggest hits. But if you really want to find out what Cheap Trick was all about, and still get most of their big hits, splurge for all five of their first records - Cheap Trick (self-titled), In Color, Heaven Tonight, At Budokan, and Dream Police. While Dream Police is the weakest of the bunch, all of these albums are absolute classics and really cover ALL sides of Cheap Trick - one of the most misunderstood bands of all time.

3 out of 5 stars Hits, but not much more........2005-06-21

This basic collection is good no doubt, but as always it's what's missing that's the problem. The biggest hits are here, but where is "Southern Girls", "Ghost Town", "Mandocello", theme from "That 70's Show", and countless others? In short, if you're looking for a single disc collection I suggest "Authorized Greatest Hits" which is longer and better. There's also the 2-disc "Essential" collection if you really need a healthy dose. Either of those should do the "trick".

5 out of 5 stars "Mommy's Allright, Daddy's Allright".......2005-04-29

This fine collection of hits from one of the hottest bands of the late 70's and 80's has something for everyone. Included are the rock-n-roll staples "Surrender", "Dream Police", and the live version of "I Want You to Want Me". All of these great songs feature Robin Zander's fine vocals, Bun E. Carlos' thundering drums, and Rick Nielsen's screaming lead guitar. For those of you who like ballads, there are two excellent ones included in this collection; "The Flame" and "Tonight its You". The disc is rounded out with other Cheap Trick greats including "She's Tight" and "Magical Mystery Tour".

This band originated in a town only 30 miles from where I live, so I've followed them very closely over the years, and this cd has remained one of my favorites. It is perfect for the "casual" Cheap Trick fan who doesn't want to buy each one of their albums just to get their favorite songs. This great cd has all of their greatest hits, so just pop it in the cd player, sit back, and enjoy some GREAT rock and roll!

4 out of 5 stars My First Cheap Trick Album!.......2004-02-01

Guided By Voices frontman Robert Pollard often goes on about how much he loves Cheap Trick and has been influenced by them. Then, when I saw the video for the Dream Police, I was pleasantly bugged out by the funky images and the awesome guitar work- very imaginative and rocked like hell.

So, the other day, I was able to get this particular version of their greatest hits for a low price... And this is a terrific starter album. The regular albums are probably sequenced better.

It sounds like a pretty mixed bag- no chronological order, which I prefer anyhow. The live tracks are terrific- these guys could make "My Little Buttercup" sound like total rocker, and they're very creative. The old-school studio tracks (first released when I was born) like Dream Police, Surrender, and Voices still sound fresh and exciting- there is no such thing as "over the top" in rock n' roll!

As for the latter-day ballads...well, that's a matter of taste. I used to not like hair metal ballad stuff when I was growing up in the 80's. The market was really flooded with it and I just couldn't relate to the majority of it. Now that I'm a little older, I enjoy it as a bit of a kitchy thrill and the Cheap Trick tracks of this nature are better than most.

It's a pretty inexpensive disc so, while you're shopping, you may as well pick this up- cheap, of course (they wouldn't have it any other way).

4 out of 5 stars An OK Primer for Cheap Trick.......2003-02-05

I'm glad this came out with a reorganized sequence, because Cheap Trick's cover of "Magical Mystery Tour" is one of the worst songs they have ever recorded. By bumping it to the close of this CD where you can just hit eject and pass it by, you're better off. Using a live version of "Clock Strikes Ten" gives you a much better opening idea to what Cheap Trick, in their heyday, was really about. Loud fast fun!

It's also a sweet victory for Cheap Trick that their late 80's comeback material holds up pretty well next to their classics from the 70's. "Tonight It's You" should have been the hit, instead of the band having to hire songwriters to get "The Flame" for. We must also not forget the obvious...any album that contains the amazing "Surrender" and "I Want You To Want Me" is worth owning.

ON THE OTHER HAND: The "Authorized Greatest Hits" contains a couple other strong selections ("Walk Away" and "Stop This Game" most notably). The main reason I would suggest having THIS version of the greatest hits is for the studio version of "The Flame." ("Authorized Greatest Hits" substitutes it with a live version.) Otherwise I'd wholeheartedly recommend passing on this version for "A.G.H."

5 out of 5 stars THIS LEGENDARY CHEAP TRICK COMPILATION ALBUM TRULY ROCK'S!.......2007-07-08

I will be writing a review on the legendary greatest hits compilation album entitled "CHEAP TRICK, AUTHORIZED GREATEST HITS" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of America's many pride and joy's and one of Rockford, Illinois' favorite sons, C-H-E-A-P T-R-I-C-K! "CHEAP TRICK, AUTHORIZED GREATEST HITS" was originally released in 2000 on Compact Disc on the Epic / Legacy Records label which is affiliated in association with Sony Music Entertainment Inc., Cheap Trick Unlimited and Volcano Enterprises ll, LLC. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

CHEAP TRICK will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's all-time greatest sacred anthems ever. When lead vocalist / guitarist and frontman Robin Zander met up and joined forces with drummer Bun E. Carlos, lead guitarist Rick Nielsen and 12-string bassist Tom Petersson, the stage was set and CHEAP TRICK would be born to take Rock n' Roll by storm thus changing it forever. It was full speed ahead for the band and they never looked back. CHEAP TRICK would release great hit songs and albums along with their legendary and storied explosive sell-out live concert tours the world over for many years during the 1977 to 2000 period to highly critically acclaim. Which now brings me to the legendary greatest hits compilation album I'm about to review for all of you today. "CHEAP TRICK, AUTHORIZED GREATEST HITS" chronicles and highlights the band's all-time greatest hits from the 1977 to 2000 period. In my opinion, this legendary compilation album is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of four masterminded genius'. This compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time. "CHEAP TRICK, AUTHORIZED GREATEST HITS" is the tales in the life of CHEAP TRICK, their music is their story that speaks for itself.

It is now time to let the Hard Rock n' Roll music of CHEAP TRICK to speak for itself and back it up musically as the band originally truly intended for it to be listened to and heard. "CHEAP TRICK, AUTHORIZED GREATEST HITS" from 2000 begins with the a*s kicking Hard Rock anthem " I Want You To Want Me," the blistering a*s kickin' Rockin' rendition of the FATS DOMINO classic song, "Ain't That A Shame," the a*s kickin' Hard Rock anthem that is dedicated to all of the beautiful girls in the south, "Southern Girls (Single Version)," the backbreaking killer Hard Rocker "Surrender," the forever CHEAP TRICK stamped trademark musical extravaganza that sounds alot like a legendary PAUL MCCARTNEY & WINGS Rock anthem, "Stop This Game," the incredible Hard Rocker "Dream Police," the alternate acoustic / electric Rocker "If You Want My Love," the explosive Hard Rocker "Tonight It's You," the genuine and original full length version of the merciless a*s kicking Hard Rocker "Everything Works If You Let It," the tough and rugged slow acoustic Rocker "Mandocello," the a*s kicking live version of the Hard Rock anthem "I can't Take It," the guitar blasting Hard Rocker "She's Tight," the groundbreaking Hard Rock anthem "That 70's Song (Based on "In The Street")," the refreshing and relaxing slow acoustic Rocker which features the lead vocals of Chrissie Hynde, "Walk Away," the beautifully synthesized Rocker "Can't Stop Fallin' Into Love" and the forever CHEAP TRICK stamped trademark Rock anthem performed live, "The Flame." May I also add that the musical chemistry within the band blends and harmonizes perfectly and beautifully together as one unit. I would also like to commend lead vocalist and frontman Robin Zander for a job perfectly well done while laying down the vocal tracks for all of these legendary hit songs. Listening to this whole greatest hits compilation album in its entirety, I never realized how many great hit songs that CHEAP TRICK really recorded. THIS IS TRULY A GREAT COMPILATION ALBUM.

I would like to highly recommend this legendary greatest hits compilation album to everyone of all ages that loves Rock n' Roll. This compilation album should be a valuable and important part of everyone's own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. You may also prefer in checking out and researching further into the many other CHEAP TRICK greatest hits compilation albums that are widely available everywhere before you make your final decision. In doing this, you will have chosen the album that is right for you and suits your musical tastes and needs. Knowing this, you will have also taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal CHEAP TRICK music collection. You can do all of your music researches and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.

In closing, despite making band personnel changes in the band's career, CHEAP TRICK has successfully continued in releasing great albums along with performing live the world over with their legendary explosive live sell-out concert performances up to this very day. Knowing this, I guess it is obvious and safe to say that CHEAP TRICK is here to stay for good and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. With this in mind, CHEAP TRICK has forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and the many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten. However, CHEAP TRICK is not about to rest on their glorious past or laurels just yet. There are still new tales and stories in the CHEAP TRICK legend and legacy that still needs to be told and written in pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you Rick, Tom, Bun and Robin. Thanks for the many great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CHEAP TRICK RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars Another Illinois band.......2006-08-04

What can I say. I've been a Cheap Trick fan for longer than most fans out there. This Rockford, Illinois band has been rockin' forever. These are good tracks. I like the other 'greatest hits' too though. Put the best of the 2 together, and you have the best of the best. Southern Girls is one of my all time favorites.

3 out of 5 stars One (major) disappointment to consider before purchasing........2006-05-08

This is not a bad collection. I'm sure there have been worse. My main complaint is the alternate version of "If You Want My Love." To me it's a major letdown because that is one of my favorite Cheap Trick songs and I really was expecting to hear it when I bought this. Now I wish I had not even bought it.

I don't think "authorized" versions are the way to choose songs, the band is always too subjective. They should have taken a poll from amongst their fans, and chosen the results that way. Plus, the omission of one of their greatest recorded songs will potentially lose new listeners who are not as familiar with the band's music.

3 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but (semi)close...[Really 3 stars out of 4...].......2005-12-20

The Authorized Greatest Hits by (formerly) the best Rock N' Roll band of alltime, 'The Noise Boys from Rockford, Illinois', is beset by one basic problem - not enough songs from when Jon Brant helped Cheap Trick put out four of the Anglosentric(k?) LPs of alltime! Why isn't Y.O.Y.O.Y or Take me to the Top on here? Tom Peterson (or is it still Petersson?), that's why!

I'm sure Rick, Brad (Carlson, i.e. Bun E.) and Robin had many
fights with what's his name about the 'set list' here as well.
I half way expected the wretched "I know what I want" to show
here like it did to tick me off on the Sex, America and Cheap Trick disc. [It sounds better with Rick signing it anyway - Just
like World's Greatest Lover]. I still love though - 3/4's of 'Em that its!

5 out of 5 stars THAT 70S BAND.......2005-12-20

CHEAP TRICK: AUTHORIZED GREATEST HITS: Cheap Trick successfully mixed a Beatle-esque power pop sensibility with crunchy guitar riffs, its tongue planted a mile in its cheek. Two guys that LOOKED like pin-up boy rock stars, and two that looked more like a Bowery Boy and a used car salesman respectively, the Tricksters managed a handful of radio-ready diehards in SURRENDER (complete with klassic Kiss reference), the LIVE AT BUDOKAN rave-up I WANT YOU TO WANT ME, and, much later, ballad biggie THE FLAME. This overview also trots out slick staples such as a rowdy rendition of Fats Domino's AIN'T THAT A SHAME (though, strangely, not their percussive treatment of Elvis' DON'T BE CRUEL, nor their Fab Four clone cover of MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR), bouncy shoulda-been-a-hit SOUTHERN GIRLS, and the theme to THAT 70'S SHOW (THAT 70'S SONG). As with any compilation, certain worthy tracks ('ELLO KIDDIES, VOICES, CALIFORNIA MAN) are missing in action, but this is due more to the boys' wealth of decent material than to careless selection. All in all, a pretty neat trick. FIVE GUITAR NECKS

5 out of 5 stars Nothin' cheap about this album.......2007-05-15

Cheap Trick's greatest hits are just that. I always liked some of their music, but didn't know that there was this much of it. Their cover of "Ain't That a Shame" would make Fats Domino proud.

5 out of 5 stars Only The Hits, But What Is Here Is Great.......2006-11-30

I have always liked Cheap Trick. They play basic rock n roll for the most part, but many of the songs they write are catchy as hell. I've also always liked their Beatles influence mixed with heavy rock. Surprisingly this is the only Cheap Trick album that I own on CD. I have "Budakon" and "Dream Police" on vinyl. Apparently there is a remastered version of this album out with some changes in the tracks, but the one I have is the original. Maybe its because I listen to this stuff in the middle of the night, but this album really rocks. It is pretty basic with just the hits (major and minor) and no album cuts to speak of. But what hits they are, "Dream Police", "Tonight Its You", "Surrender", "Voices", "I Can't Take It", "She's Tight" and more. All of these are examples of what great pop / rock writing is all about. The album also contains a cover of The Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour". Some people love it and some hate it. I like it ok, although it does not really improve on the original. After listening to this album I ask myself again......why don't I own more Cheap Trick!

4 out of 5 stars Room for more.......2006-05-11

My only critism of this cd is the omission of a few songs. There's room for some more here.
I like the version of Magical Mystery Tour. Southern Girls is lacking as is It's Only Love (I know it wasn't a hit) and something from All Shook Up and Cheap Trick would have comepleted the collection nicely. I guess it's a Greatest Hits so their Greatest Hits are on here.
If you're in the market, go for Essential Cheap Trick or Authorised Greatest Hits.

4 out of 5 stars Some very misinformed reviewers out there!.......2006-04-04

I've been a Cheap Trick fan ever since their first releases...and I have to say...for anyone who claims to be a real Cheap Trick fan, the last three songs on this CD should be as familiar as the rest. I do agree on one thing: the Authorized Greatest Hits is a better package with better coverage of the history of this band...the import version is an even better representation with 18 tracks as opposed to the American version with 16. The inclusion of the live Clock Strikes Ten on the remaster of this CD is a nod to their Japanese audience, who made that song huge in their country...if you listen to Robin's introduction to the song on the Budokan album, he says "This one I'm sure you all know..."This is a single CD collection and you can't please everyone or have every single track everyone wants on this one CD...if you're that big a fan, you probably have all the original albums to begin with...if you want to introduce someone to this band, this is a good place to begin...Authorized Greatest Hits is even better...best? Get them The Collection (the first three albums in one box) and let them get familiar with where this band came from...the inclusion of Magical Mystery Tour on this disc is nice, but knowing some history about their recording of the song would have been nice too...that minor gripe out of the way, this isn't really a bad collection, it's just not as extensive as some of the others. For the diehard fans I recommend the box set "Sex, America, Cheap Trick"...some amazing finds there!

2 out of 5 stars Greatest hits?.......2006-03-19

A greatest hits collection only in name. Half of the "hits" on this album are unlistenable songs I'd never previously heard, and many of their real hits are missing.

Reminds me of the English Beat "Best of" that didn't include Save It For Later, the only top 40 hit they ever had.

I don't know if there are better Cheap Trick collections out there, but this is a waste.

The 24 cut Japanese version of the 1991 released
Cheap Trick, The Greatest Hits has even more of
the REALLY good stuff on it. The stuff from the
LPS that Jon Brant played on when Cheap Trick
the band, was the kings of MTV! B.B.B? Hope so!
