Blistering r'n'r.......2000-06-19
I have to say that the reviewers below are pretty much on target with this one. LONG JOHN SILVER is probably not the best intro to the Airplane's recorded work. But it has a kind of fury to it that is just short of punk rage. I can't count the number of times I've come home from a long hard day at work and reached for this record and blasted Grace's "Eat Starch Mom"-- a masterpiece of unfocused rage (who's the target: vegetarians? uptight parents? anybody that Grace doesn't like at the moment?). It's as furious as anything by the Stooges, the Dolls or the Velvets--and that's high praise indeed.
Grace DOES sound strained on this one--at least a good deal of the time. "Milk Train" proves that she could still pull off a smooth, snaking vocal, simultaneously earthy and ethereal, and as good as her best 60s work. But elsewhere she sounds, at best, like she was in the in the next room.
I found out years later that many of the tracks were originally recorded as instrumentals, with the lyrics written and the vocals inserted only later. Grace Slick as an afterthought is a somewhat difficult concept to accept, but there you have it. So I'm guessing that "Aerie," "Starch," probably "Easter" and certainly the title track were really pretty much Hot Tuna pieces with Grace jumping in after the fact. If you listen to LJS with this in mind, the buried, sometimes strained vocals start to make sense. You may also realize that the problem is less Grace's voice (she's doing bang-up work on "Aerie" for instance) than with the production itself.
Yes, this is a fiery, edgy album, but let's not forget that JA were never just a docile, peaceful hippie band. The irony about the band was that the sweet voice belonged to the male singer (Marty) and that the angrier, edgier voice belonged to the female lead. It's not so surprising then, that once Marty departed, the furies were unleashed.
One final flight for a tired, but angry Airplane........1999-09-14
While the Airplane was splintering, at least they decided to go out with a bang. This is more of a desperate"Im going down in flames" then a farewell album. Regardless of the state of mind and affairs that were going on within the band, this is one angry Airplane. So have a toke, do another shot and enjoy this somewhat sloppy, loud kiss goodbye to the flower age. "Aerie(Gang of Eagles)", "Long John Sliver", "Trial By Fire" "Milk Train", and "Eat Starch Mom" are the best thingies here. Each track is one barrage of fury after another, like they knew this was going to be their last statement and they were going to show you that putting an end to their eight year flight over the countries wasn't a picnic, it wasn't pretty, and they really did hate to see it end. I did too.
harder, angrier, more riff oriented than previous albums........1999-06-12
LJS was released in mid-1972 by the post-Balin & Dryden line-up of JA, and represents their last studio album. New drummer Covington had quit the band, replaced by ex-TURTLES/CSNY drummer John Barbata. The music, mostly Slick, Kaukonen and Kantner compositions, are harder, more guitar-riff jam oriented than the older material on BAXTER'S or CROWN OF CREATION. The flower-power-love band they were no more. Jack Casady's bass sound is incredable here - thick with more than an edge of distortion in places. Grace Slick, fueled by alcohol, lets loose an impressive torrential punk angst against vegetarians ("Eat Starch Mom"), The Roman Catholic Church ("Easter") and sings the praises of down-and-dirty sex ("Milk Train"). Most of the songs on LJS lumber along at mid-tempo, with fewer variances in chordal structure than previous JA releases. A good, solid, drug & alcohol fueled rock n roll album. But if you're searching for the summer of '67 Jefferson Airplane that loves you, tread not in these dark unfriendly waters...
Not the best, but not the worst.......1998-10-19
If you're looking for an accurate example of Jefferson Airplane's downfall, here is the perfect one. Since Marty Balin left after VOLUNTEERS, Grace Slick and Paul Kantner became group leaders, creating 2 somewhat forgettable albums. LONG JOHN SILVER is better than BARK, with the best songs being "Twilight Double Leader", "Aerie (Gang of Eagles)", and "Trial By Fire". But Grace sounds strained, which is a downer. Altogether, not too shabby, but check out VOLUNTEERS instead.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.
To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24
Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.
A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.
My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.
A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11
The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.
It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.
Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.
OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15
Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.
Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17
This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"
Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.
It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

I found out years later that many of the tracks were originally recorded as instrumentals, with the lyrics written and the vocals inserted only later. Grace Slick as an afterthought is a somewhat difficult concept to accept, but there you have it. So I'm guessing that "Aerie," "Starch," probably "Easter" and certainly the title track were really pretty much Hot Tuna pieces with Grace jumping in after the fact. If you listen to LJS with this in mind, the buried, sometimes strained vocals start to make sense. You may also realize that the problem is less Grace's voice (she's doing bang-up work on "Aerie" for instance) than with the production itself.
Yes, this is a fiery, edgy album, but let's not forget that JA were never just a docile, peaceful hippie band. The irony about the band was that the sweet voice belonged to the male singer (Marty) and that the angrier, edgier voice belonged to the female lead. It's not so surprising then, that once Marty departed, the furies were unleashed.
Twilight Jefferson Airplane still bright enough for me.......2006-10-28
This June 1972 album by the Jefferson Airplane, released here by the Spanish branch of BMG, features the seventies line-up of the band. Papa John Creach and various percussionists help the nucleus of Casady, Kantner, Kaukonen and Slick.
Adorned, in this fine CD version, by a tightly packed bunch of maduro, rustic looking, mind affecting stogies, this was the last proper studio LP from the Jefferson Airplane. The band members' side projects would soon became their main projects: Hot Tuna, Paul Kantner and Grace Slick, Jefferson Starship as well as various PERRO collaborations.
The instrumental playing is of a very high level. Jorma Kaukonen's loud electric guitar (an unifying factor) and Papa John Creach's excellent, spicy electric violin dominate the proceedings, with effective support by the rest of the band. Everything is a bit relentless though and I would have enjoyed more rhythmic shadings. An external producer might have helped! The band already produced themselves, maybe with better results, on their previous album ("Bark".)
Among the nine tracks featured, there are quite a few strong tunes. I especially like: "Trial by Fire", "Milk Train", "Twilight Double Leader" and "Each Starch Mom".
Overall, the recorded sound is good although maybe, a times, slightly congested. This must have been the intended result; I do not subscribe to the "bad recording" theory. The digital mastering is good.
The vocals prove quite strong, although I find that they can be a bit too buried in the mix to my liking.
Overall, the lyrics are adequate even though they can sometimes be meandering (particularly on "Alexander the Medium" and on "Aerie".) The "sacrilegious" lyrics to "The Son of Jesus" or "Easter?" have always seemed downright embarrassing to me.
Although not the first album to buy by this band, I still like its best tracks very much. I rate this album **** but I feel that *** ½ would be more adequate. Still, I would definitely not want to be without it.
Alexander the Medium Is Worth The Price of the CD.......2006-07-20
Jorma's lead guitar (and interplay with Papa John Creach on violin) during the break in Alexander the Medium are the best two minutes or so I have heard on any Jefferson Airplane/Starship album or CD. By the way, it is IMPOSSIBLE to find "Alexander the Medium" on I-Tunes, Napster, or on any other legal download service. I bought the CD, then lost it, and now want to buy the download just A-T-M, but can't. Bummer.
An Embarrassment!!.......2006-05-03
Jefferson Airplane was one of the hottest groups of the 1960s and definitely the best band from the San Francisco area. They would have done their legacy a huge favor and thrown this album in the trash rather than releasing it. I gave it two stars for the Jorma Kaukonen tune "Trial by Fire." Your money would be well spent on anything by JA from the 1966 to 1970 period and pretend that this album never existed. This was written by perhaps the Airplane's biggest fan so this is not an idle slam.

The last Jefferson Airplane album, Long John Silver (1972) shows a band on the verge of disintegration, exhausted, daring to be abrasive, and displaying all their transit wounds to their public. Melodies never quite get off the ground and tempos are turgid, but it conjures up the endgame in an always-fascinating history. "Eat Starch Mom" is a demented raver by Slick, in which her hard edge and bile becomes almost unbearable, but is mitigated by anti-hippie black humor; "Trail by Fire" could be off of Volunteers; "Twilight Double Leader" is Jefferson Starship avant la lettre. For those who aren't afraid of intensely expressed bad feelings.

I have to say that the reviewers below are pretty much on target with this one. LONG JOHN SILVER is probably not the best intro to the Airplane's recorded work. But it has a kind of fury to it that is just short of punk rage. I can't count the number of times I've come home from a long hard day at work and reached for this record and blasted Grace's "Eat Starch Mom"-- a masterpiece of unfocused rage (who's the target: vegetarians? uptight parents? anybody that Grace doesn't like at the moment?). It's as furious as anything by the Stooges, the Dolls or the Velvets--and that's high praise indeed.
Grace DOES sound strained on this one--at least a good deal of the time. "Milk Train" proves that she could still pull off a smooth, snaking vocal, simultaneously earthy and ethereal, and as good as her best 60s work. But elsewhere she sounds, at best, like she was in the in the next room.

One final flight for a tired, but angry Airplane........1999-09-14
While the Airplane was splintering, at least they decided to go out with a bang. This is more of a desperate"Im going down in flames" then a farewell album. Regardless of the state of mind and affairs that were going on within the band, this is one angry Airplane. So have a toke, do another shot and enjoy this somewhat sloppy, loud kiss goodbye to the flower age. "Aerie(Gang of Eagles)", "Long John Sliver", "Trial By Fire" "Milk Train", and "Eat Starch Mom" are the best thingies here. Each track is one barrage of fury after another, like they knew this was going to be their last statement and they were going to show you that putting an end to their eight year flight over the countries wasn't a picnic, it wasn't pretty, and they really did hate to see it end. I did too.
harder, angrier, more riff oriented than previous albums........1999-06-12
LJS was released in mid-1972 by the post-Balin & Dryden line-up of JA, and represents their last studio album. New drummer Covington had quit the band, replaced by ex-TURTLES/CSNY drummer John Barbata. The music, mostly Slick, Kaukonen and Kantner compositions, are harder, more guitar-riff jam oriented than the older material on BAXTER'S or CROWN OF CREATION. The flower-power-love band they were no more. Jack Casady's bass sound is incredable here - thick with more than an edge of distortion in places. Grace Slick, fueled by alcohol, lets loose an impressive torrential punk angst against vegetarians ("Eat Starch Mom"), The Roman Catholic Church ("Easter") and sings the praises of down-and-dirty sex ("Milk Train"). Most of the songs on LJS lumber along at mid-tempo, with fewer variances in chordal structure than previous JA releases. A good, solid, drug & alcohol fueled rock n roll album. But if you're searching for the summer of '67 Jefferson Airplane that loves you, tread not in these dark unfriendly waters...

If you're looking for an accurate example of Jefferson Airplane's downfall, here is the perfect one. Since Marty Balin left after VOLUNTEERS, Grace Slick and Paul Kantner became group leaders, creating 2 somewhat forgettable albums. LONG JOHN SILVER is better than BARK, with the best songs being "Twilight Double Leader", "Aerie (Gang of Eagles)", and "Trial By Fire". But Grace sounds strained, which is a downer. Altogether, not too shabby, but check out VOLUNTEERS instead.
