4 out of 5 stars Indeed, Something Magic.......2006-03-22

I have loved this album since it's release in 1977. I can't believe how often and how cruely it is dumped on. I think the band showed a lot of bravery in putting this kind of record out in the face of the disco and punk movement that was happening at the same time. Remember the Eagles' attempt at sounding like The Bee Gees on "One Of These Nights"? At least Procol Harum remained close to their roots in the face of change. Not as great as some of their other works, but a bad day fishing is better then a good day working -- as the saying goes. Good liner notes, and excellent audio quality in the digital remaster. My only confusion is listing "Wizard Man" as a bonus track. It was on my vinyl LP (side one, track three). The other bonus track is an instrumental called "Backgammon", which was a b-side. If you're buying this only out of curiosity over "Backgammon", then stay away. It's not worth it. But if you're a fan of the band (and of this album in particular), then by all means grab it.

3 out of 5 stars At Their Nadir.......2004-06-30

I bought this years ago when it first came out on vinyl, hoping it would be an improvement over it's very uneven predecessor, Procol's Ninth. I was appalled at the musical stench that arose from the grooves of the album as it played. The Worm and the Tree was the worst; it was a sad swan song for the most intellectual song writing duo of the 60s/70s and for the band that gave voice to their creative vision. The words and music reeked of creative and spiritual exhaustion.
In the last couple of years, I have rediscovered my old love for the music of Procol Harum and have been building a CD library that includes many recordings that were not readily available in the days of the LP. Recently, I decided to give Something Magic another shot and so ordered this remastered reissue.
Repertoire Records has done a fine job presenting this recording in the most attractive light possible. Included with the CD is an informative and well-written booklet that gives the listener an idea as to why Procol Harum was on the rocks at this time.
Now that I have revisited the album and have listened with new ears, I find that it has risen in my esteem. Gary Brooker and Keith Reid were still a formidable songwriting team. Just read the lyrics of the first four songs and listen to the musical arrangements on them. They scream classic Procol Harum. Even The Mark of the Claw, the music for which was written by Mick Grabham, is Brookeresque in its sound.
The Worm and the Tree remains problematic. The music, particularly in part one is often gorgeous and dreamy. The lyrics on the other hand, though they are meant to be allegorical, are often maudlin and jejune. As for the final two "bonus" cuts, they are OK, but rather disposable and not worthy of the Procol Harum I knew.
Though this album may not delight everyone, those who are Procol Harum fans should own it to remind themselves that even at their nadir, this was (and is again) a very good band. On the strength of the first four songs and select parts of the infamous Worm and the Tree, this CD rates a solid three.

    2 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe This is Reissued.......2003-08-01

Wow, Procol Harum frenzy must be reaching a fever pitch for this album to get reissued. It's really hard to imagine what Gary was thinking with The Worm & the Tree. Really awful. I recently read a review which said that this album may encapsulize why punk was necessary. Perfect. Buy anything and everything by Procol Harum except this album! It does have some novelty value for the sole PH Mick Grabham composition - the Mark of the Claw - which features a pretty outrageous synth solo from Pete Solley.

2 out of 5 stars Indeed, Something Tragic.......2003-03-30

The Brooker/Reid songwriting duo is my favorite of all time. This album, with its puerile spoken suite "The Worm and the Tree", marked the absolute low point in the band's history. If you're a Procol Harum completist, try to find this album CHEAP.
Good songs are the title cut, Skating On Thin Ice, and Strangers in Space.

2 out of 5 stars ...So sad to see such emptiness, so sad to see such tears..........2003-02-15

Procol Harum were on their way out, in a world beseiged with disco and punk. Chris Copping switched back to bass, and Gary Brooker brought Pete Solley in for the coveted organ role. And Pete even played some synthesizers (BLGH) to attempt to keep Procol in tune with the times, but....no. And having schlockmeisters, Ron & Howie Albert to "produce" (heh-heh-heh) "Something Magic" ensured its - and the group's - imminent demise. STILL, though: the fourth song, Guitarist Extraordinare Mick Grabham's "The Mark Of The Claw" made purching the album worth it. It's a grinding rock and roller, but the astounding solo that Pete Solley plays on the song almost justifies synthesizers' very existence. Go on, you've bought albums and/or CD's for just one song before...

5 out of 5 stars MUSIC TO OUR EARS!.......2006-02-27

The tribute to the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang's birth continues, and this two-disc set is perfect for those who want to like classical music and insist they can't. The 34 tracks sound familiar because they have been used in popular films, either as incidental music or as an important component of the score. And we're not just talking Amadeus, but films that you may be surprised used such memorable music ... Mission Impossible, There's Something About Mary, Runaway Bride, Trading Places, Miss Congeniality, The Living Daylights. The works are performed by the finest, including James Galway, Alban Berg Quartett, Riccardo Muti, Dame Felicity Lott, Sir Neville Marriner, Herbert Von Karajan and Martha Vineyard's Andre Previn. Pretty classy indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Harum Say Farewell (For 14 Years).......2005-04-29

With their record sales in decline, and no hit singles in several years either, Procol Harum entered the studio to record their "make it or break it" tenth album, 1977's "Something Magic." Onboard was new keyboardist Pete Solley, while former keyboardist Chris Copping moved over to play bass, replacing Alan Cartwright. "Something Magic" is easily Harum's most controversial album, primarily for the 18 1/2-minute epic, "The Worm & The Tree," which takes up the second-half of the album, and was roundly criticized at the time as being pretentious. However, I say the controversy has been completely blown out of proportion. "Something Magic," although not the greatest record Procol Harum ever made, is a very excellent album. Bad? Not at all. Gary Brooker & company, in my opinion, have *never* recorded a bad album, and "Something Magic" is no exception. The title song, "Wizard Man," and "Mark Of The Claw" are all first-rate Harum pop-rockers, "Skating On Thin Ice" is the track that mostly resembles classic Harum of old, and it's great. And "Strangers In Space," with it's hypnotic, ethereal feel, is very beautiful stuff. And "The Worm & The Tree"? Granted, I can understand why this epic piece, structured like a children's rhyme set to music, with Brooker *speaking* all of the lyrics instead of singing them, probably wouldn't work as a live number. But, as a studio creation, I think "The Worm & The Tree" works just fine. The music is wonderful (including some excellent orchestral arrangements), the band's performance is strong, and Brooker's narration is quite good (even when he's not singing, Gary Brooker has a great voice!). And the story itself, written by band lyricist Keith Reid, is a very good allegorical tale about life, death, and re-birth. Pretentious or not, I like "The Worm & The Tree." And I like the whole album, too.Deciding that they'd finally run out of steam as a band, Procol Harum disbanded following the tour for "Something Magic," and Gary Brooker went on to a short-lived solo career, releasing three albums on his own. But, like in the tale of "The Worm & The Tree," Procol Harum was NOT gone for good. 14 years later, Harum were re-born with their fantastic comeback album, 1991's "The Prodigal Stranger." But "Something Magic," despite the poor sales, was a great album for Harum to end their first phase of work together. It's also a fond farewell to the band's late, great drummer, B.J. Wilson, who made his final appearance with the band on this release (he passed away in 1989). "Something Magic" is an excellent Procol Harum album, "Worm" and all.

      5 out of 5 stars ethereal romance.......2004-05-22

An ethereal romance of a CD, Homequest is a hauntingly beautiful release from Tia Knight, a New Age composer whose music fuses electronic sounds with a wide variety of medieval and fantasy elements. Tied into this sense of romance, however, is a darker edge, a sense of cynicism that makes the intricacies of her music all the more fascinating and sets her apart from the dreamy wistfulness of so many other New Age musicians. It is no wonder that among her credentials are a song used in a stage adaptation of Frankenstein and several pieces to be included in the upcoming film, Untold Vampire Tales.
Homequest evokes the Pre-Raphaelite artists who so often balanced images of medieval fantasy and chivalry with more sinister elements, such as the many paintings of La Belle Dame Sans Merci, the beautiful yet evil woman taken from Keats' poem, who bewitches those knights and nobles who are unlucky enough to cross her path. These multifaceted compositions both entrance and unnerve, and Knight's music has the same quality, simultaneously attractive and spine-chilling. The CD's title track is actually the lightest piece on the album, a neo-medieval etude that reflects the elation of coming home after a long quest, along with the trepidation one might feel after such an absence.
"Illusions" features eerily familiar yet unplaceable vocals dubbed over the synthesized fantasia of a song; it weaves a fragmentary story in one's mind, leaving it up to the listener to fill in the missing pieces.
"Soldier's Requiem," on the other hand, is disturbingly at odds with its title. Less like a funeral hymn than a gavotte or pavane, its dance-like tempo sways on as if the dancing and celebration continues, despite loss in an uncaring world. This irony continues into other tracks, such as "Betrayal," where subtle strings creep along in a dance of deception that conjures up images of a Machiavellian dance party. In contrast, the piece "Sojourn" combines electronic sounds and synthesized vocals with bells, zils, and flutes, in a Tolkein-esque escape into fantasy. The hypnotic "Fatima's Dream" and "Perfect Love" fuse techno beats with medieval and Middle Eastern influences.
Tia Knight's works are odes to the imagination and the power of creativity and fantasy. Their refreshing mixture of sweet and caustic is a welcome change from so much New Age music, and will appeal to a wide variety of musical tastes.

5 out of 5 stars reaching for repeat!.......2005-11-21

From the eerie "Witches Brew" to the somberly elegant and striking "Loss," Tia Knight provides an intriguing range of ambient instrumentals with a medieval tone. "Bringer" opens percussively, with a pulsing beat that continues through the composition. "Vertigo" is another percussive exploration, this one in a more subtle, muted range, yet also with a catchy rhythm that will get listeners wanting to move. Then "Staircase" offers rising keyboard crescendos and horn fanfares, while "Sticks-n-Stones" explores a darker ambient sound that would make effective theme music for events portrayed in an ominous setting. In her description, the artist likens it to "black widows dancing across the moon." The harpsichord on "Raindance" is an effectively atmospheric touch. In all, Blackwood is an enjoyable debut for fans of ambient music, and will have listeners reaching for repeat!

      5 out of 5 stars mesmerizing.......2005-11-21

I just discovered Tia Knight's music and never has music affected me the way "Blackwood" has. It is mesmerizing, soul deep and brought me to tears, which is very rare for music to do that for me. I intend to by her other CD and continue to be a fan.

      2 out of 5 stars Cacophonous Nonsense.......2005-11-21

You know how it is when you are looking for totally new music? Sometimes you lay your $20 bill on the counter and just take a chance. Sometimes you find something completely new and inspiring in New Age. Sometimes, particularly with New Age, you just lose. Well, with "Blackwood", I just lost. Sure, Tia Knight has perhaps two good cuts on the CD. I'll give her credit for that much. The rest of the music? Ouch! Rather than focusing on the fundamentals of Music Theory 101, she had to see what kind of sounds her electronic instruments were capable of making. The result sounds like the mating of two Maytag washing machines. It's souless and silly. Rarely do I throw a CD in the trash can. Regretfully, this time I did.
