Wish You Were Here is a song cycle dedicated to Pink Floyd's original frontman, Syd Barrett, who'd flamed out years before: two grimly funny songs about the evils of the music business ("By the way, which one's Pink?"), and two long, touching ones about the band's vanished friend. The real star of the show, though, is the production: sparkling, convoluted, designed to sound deeply oh-wow under the influence--and pretty great sober too--with David Gilmour getting lots of space for his most lyrical guitar playing ever. And, though the album is big and ambitious, even bombastic, it somehow dodges being pretentious--the Barrett tributes are honest and heartfelt, beneath all the grand gestures and stereophonic trickery. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
One of the many reasons I love Pink Floyd.......2007-06-13
For Pink Floyd, making a follow up album to 'Dark Side of the Moon' must have seemed an extremely daunting task. However with 'Wish You Were Here' they succeeded admirably. In his biography of the band, Nick Mason stated that they wanted to avoid simply making a sequel to the hugely successful predecessor and that they wanted to start afresh in a new musical direction. This decision resulted in a creation of true musical beauty.
The long, ambling and elegant opening track 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' was a new step even for Floyd. Both parts of this track have a relaxed yet compelling beauty that puts it right up there with the best the band has produced.
After the ethereal beauty of the opening track, the following two bring a far more sombre mood to proceedings. 'Welcome to the Machine' is a disgruntled sideswipe at the human condition which is somewhat reminiscent in lyrical content, of the track 'Time' on 'Dark Side of the Moon'. Hot on the heels of this is 'Have A Cigar', a pessimistic jibe at the music industry creeps that came out of the woodwork after their sudden shot to international success. Although these two tracks are far more downbeat, they are executed with a Floydian bite that makes them quality tracks.
Along with 'The Wall' and 'Dark Side of the Moon', this was one of the albums that defined Floyd and simply demands to be listened to.
Worthwhile.......2007-06-10
This is a good, but not a great album. Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here, and Have a Cigar are all classic cuts and never get old. The Syd Barrett tribute songs Shine on You Crazy Diamond are a little weaker. Over all it's worth a tumble, but it's no Dark Side Of The Moon.
An Absolute Must.......2007-05-29
Probably the best Floyd CD. I had an earlier (non-digitally remastered) version of this album and found that this version is really a treat in comparison. As far as the music itself, every track is a classic and a must for any classic rock fan. If you don't own a good version this album, you need look no further.
Wish it was a little less drab.......2007-05-27
So Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is probably considered their third greatest album in the normal consensus behind Dark Side and The Wall. It's not "Animals" and "Obscured by Clouds" are better than this album but this one is still a fine one despite being only five songs long.
This one starts out with a classic of a song in Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Beautiful, epic, pick your favorite cliche and use it here because this song has it all, even a saxophone solo at the end. It is later reprised at the end of the album this the first one is far superior. This song along with Wish You Were Here were written for former frontman Syd Barrett who even visited them in the studio during the recording, small world isn't it. Speaking of the title track it is an amazing song. But one thing it does that I love is that it is simple. Accoustic guitar with some great lyrics provides a nice sendoff to Mr. Barrett.
The one problem this album has is the two music industry rants from Roger Waters. "Welcome to the Machine" is atrocious and overlong. "Have A Cigar" is better but it's not even sung by a member of Pink Floyd.
Other than the rants this is a fine album. And for once a Pink Floyd album that seems to express hope, nostalgia and something more than just being depressed which is always a nice change of pace.
Wish I Had Discovered Sooner.......2007-05-27
Wish You Were Here is equally as superb as Dark Side of the Moon and serves as a sequel with an emotional feel and blues-based, melodic background centered by outstanding guitars. The use of sound effects that the band incorporated two years prior are as involved again and help to enhance the mood and vibrational feel of the music. With having to fulfill mammoth expectations in 1975 after an phenomenal album like Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd only broadened their musical horizons but played with the same passion to create another album that offers proof as to why they were, and still are, so highly regarded as innovators in rock music.

This Rare Badfinger Recording was Pulled from Shelves Shortly after Its Release in 1974 Due to Managerial & Contractual Problems. 'Wish You were Here' features 'Just a Chance', 'Dennis', 'Love Time' & Six Others.
Customer Reviews:
Ahead of Their Time .......2007-03-08
Have never heard of Badfinger until I came across them in a ListMania section while I was browsing. What intrigued me to give this CD a try was their sad story. Clearly a superb band, way ahead of their time and with a unparalelled talent. Really sad the way it ended but ironically that's makes them more of a real gem. I'm sure I'll be exploring more of them.
Imagine McCartney recording with Clapton in the early 1970's...........2007-01-26
Instead of with Linda....
And with the songs serving as an outlet for severe personal and financial problems - As if McCartney needed to write a song like Layla...
That's how I've often thought of this CD. Great guitar work, and lots of big melodies. There's plenty of details in the other reviews, so I'll just add that Pete Ham is in his usual fine (musical) form here, and it's undoubtedly Joey Molland's finest hour. It took dire straits for the band, but Molland never sounded as inspired as he does here.
An odd thing I noticed after reading the Badfinger bio - In the closing verse to Dennis, a great Pete Ham song, the phrase "There's A Way Through" is repeated many times - reportedly the same phrase as Ham's final words to Tom Evans shortly before his death...
A Classic Stomped to Death by Stinking Management and A Label.......2005-10-08
that chose to sue the band rather than understand what Pete, Joey, Tom and Mike were going through. The shame of it all is while rock was going into that transitory phase from British Rock and Roll and California Country Rock to Disco, Punk and whatever Springsteen calls his music??? Badfinger in 1974 had recorded an album that not only sounded like "Abbey Road" or even elements of the Beatles' "White Album", but evoke that same magical lyrical imagery so prevalent in the latter Lennon-McCartney era.
Peter Ham, disillusioned and broke, would take his life less than a year after recording this album, but some of his finest songs - maybe not hit tunes like "Day After Day", "No Matter What" or "Baby Blue" - were recorded here. Songs like "Just A Chance", "In the Meantime", and "Meanwhile Back at the Ranch". Tommy Evans contributed the cute and very Lennonsque "King of the Load" with a sweeping guitar solo (Ham? or Molland) that rivals George Harrison's best Beatle solos. Mike Gibbins stepped from behind the drums to sing "You're So Fine" with the three main singer Badfinger boys. The epic, chugging, masterpiece "Meanwhile Back at the Ranch-"Shall I Smoke" with an opening lead vocal by Ham and ending vocal by Joey Molland and with dual lead guitars by Ham and Molland is a breathtaking finish to a wonderous work. A work that sadly enough ended up in the bargain bins - and left the band in desperate debt because a label chose to punish an act over the misdeeds of its mismanagement.
Joey Molland once told me that yep, "Gotta Get Out of Here" was a blunt reference to what the band was experiencing due to lousy management and a label that really didn't care. A band that came directly out of being the Beatles' proteges, being outstanding musicians and composers in their own right and keeping the tradition of the Fab Four did not deserve such a terrible fate. Both Ham and Evans died needless, tragic, early deaths that shouldn't have been, and Molland deserves much more acclaim - at least Badfinger has been acknowledged as a major influence by bands like Cheap Trick, the Records, the Bangles and others.
Abbey Road SIDE #3, maybe!?!?!?!??!.......2004-07-11
Well, I'm sure you all have heard the problems this band went through, so I won't even go into that. What you have here in Wish You Were Here is not to be mistaken by Pink Floyd's CD of the same title. Just over 30 minutes, this album broke new ground, a different approach then previous releases. I won't sit here and insult anyone's intelligence by stating this is their greatest work. Personally, its my favorite. From start to finish, no bad tracks, some medley's, some excellent choices of intruments never used before on a Badfinger record. This is by all means, the last record of the Classic Badfinger lineup. The comparisons to Abbey Road are prevelent.....but it stands to this day as a Classic Lost Album that will go down in history as just that.....Lost. No hit songs here, no tradmark sounds, just pure brilliance!!
If I could possibly improve this great release, I would have included "Timeless" somewhere in between the original's release first side and second. Would have been a nice compliment to the Abbey Road theory?!?
This document should not be overlooked by any casual, hardcore or any Beatle fan!
Only poor management kept this from being a huge success.......2004-03-04
The two albums that Badfinger recorded for Warner Brothers after leaving Apple were among the easiest to find in the days before cd's. They could usually be found languishing in used bins for relatively low prices, and it was this that initially threw me off. Finally, faced with the prospect of little known Badfinger over no Badfinger at all, I went ahead and purchased both albums. Imagine my surprise when I got home and found that both albums were loaded with songs on par with, and at times better than, the songs that the band did while with Apple. The whole album is strong, with leadoff shouldabeenahit "Just A Chance" Pete Ham is in fine voice, and one is left to wonder what could have been. "Know One Knows" and "Dennis" are equally strong, but it's the rather odd cut and paste songs "In The Meantime/Some Other Time" and "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch/Should I Smoke" that show the band's true brilliance. Within months Pete Ham would be dead and with his passing rock and roll lost one of the truly great songwriters as well as a hugely underrated guitarist. This album demands and deserves a listen and it's a risk you won't regret.

Down right Awesome.......2007-07-16
I don't know about the previous review, but this is just great. A nice treat when looking for a new way to appreciate the music of Roger Waters and Pink Floyd
It could have been so much more..........2006-07-25
Like their earlier 1989 Pink Floyd recording, this recording of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra playing Pink Floyd could have been so much better than it was. Essentially, it is a recording of a Pink Floyd tribute band backed by an orchestra. The use of electric guitar, electric bass, full trap set, vocalists and synthesizers detracts from the performance and leaves the listener longing for an actual symphonic version of these works. It would have been entirely different if it had been members of Pink Floyd contributing, however it was not. Therefore, it left something to be desired.
For a fully symphonic Pink Floyd experience, try "Us and Them" by the London Philharmonic.
don't bother too spent 0 on any think.......2006-03-03
we'll there isn't any comment on this''accept i hoped i rather not be heard...save your though..buy american most wanted.
Could have been much better.......2005-04-10
The record begins with what looks like a very promising rendering of "Shine on..." until the vocals enter in the sixth minute, making you scramble for the "off" button - not to let your neigbours know you're listening to this unbelievably corny crap. And this is only the beginning.
"Money", "Time" and especially "In the Flesh" are pathetic, "Us and them" and "WYWH" sound like an interminable folk music evening on German TV, and "Another Brick..." is just plain bad.
On the other hand, "Hey you" would have been quite good minus the vocals. As for "The great gig in the sky", it is the only track I would call listenable throughout, the usual horrible vocals being replaced by a woman who can actually sing.
The problem with this album is not the inevitable alteration of the spirit of Pink floyd, but the absolutely APPALLING vocal performance and some painfully kitchy instrumentation at times. Well, most of the time, actually.
If you're a diehard PF fan - like myself - and think you can take anything with its name on it, well, think again. If you don't even like Pink floyd, you'll never be able to listen to this.
Hardly symphonic........2005-03-29
This CD suffers from the number one ailment of most symphonic tribute albums; it is only symphonic in the loosest, most liberal sense of the definition. I think a lot of listeners would agree that symphonic tribute albums should not be performed by "orchestras" which include electric guitars, bass guitars, synthesizers, or drum kits. Listening to a symphony's re-creation of a rock song should enhance the experience and expand the breadth of its reaches, not merely change some of the instruments.

As a teenager, country hunk Mark Wills was more fond of Bon Jovi than George Jones and that influence shows on Wish You Were Here. That's not to dismiss his country credentials--those are intact. But the songs on this album are infused with a punchy pop sensibility. The instrumentation is sometimes bigger than life, something more akin to stadium rock than country twang. The piano on the title track absolutely soars, and the crisp guitars on the standout track "Emily Harper" provide edge to what might have been merely charming. But despite the sonic heights achieved here, Mark Wills' voice stays on top of the mix. On "Love Is Alive" he trades in his twang for a New Jersey growl, all the more remarkable since he grew up in Georgia. Wondered where he learned that? --Tod Nelson
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2003-07-28
I borrowed this CD from my cousin and didn't really think that I would fall in love with it. But I did! I knew who Mark Wills was because of his hit song "Nineteen Somethin'". As a teenager I'll admit his looks are what first caught my attention but once I listened to this CD I knew I was hooked. Unlike the other reviews I have read I have set my heart to the song "Help Me Fall". Anyone who has ever had a boyfriend/girlfriend can really appreciate this song. It talks about the hard feelings that come from trying so hard not to love someone because it hurts so much to do so. This song combined with "Last Memory" can really get to anyone who has had a break-up. This is going in to my favorites though because there is NOT a song on the album that I don't like. It's great and a really emotional CD. Thank Mark for a great CD and keep'em comin'.
Don't Laugh at Me.......2001-05-15
I recently attended a youth seminar with around 120 high school sophomores from North Florida. There was a girl there named Jessica. She is deaf. As her talent she signed to the song "Don't laugh at me" The whole room was in tears. It is such an inspirational song. It applies to everyone. I really love it.
the pain as you grow up.......2001-03-29
this is a special album of fellings we as humans go thru in life don't laugh at me and tim mcgraws one of these days your going to love me, ,both those songs brought back cruel peer pressure me and my wife went thru as kids growing up.this whole album holds special meaning for us now as adults looking back, every song in this album should have went to the top of the charts.from mike and karen near hot springs arkansas ,great alubum what else can you say .
"Don't Laugh At Me" - an inspiration!.......2001-03-24
The first time my husband heard "Don't Laugh At Me" he was driving down the road. Tears just started pouring down his cheecks. He thought about all the times that people had talked about Megan, his autistic daughter, and laughed at her and called her names. The times she has cried herself to sleep because people were cruel to her because they wouldn't try to understand her or just couldn't understand her. Do you know how it feels to cry yourself to sleep because of other people's tourments? Or are you one of those who get pleasure from other people's pain? This entire cd has wonderful songs with a special message to them. When we need an inspiration to trudge on in our efforts to help Exceptional Parents of Exceptional Children, we listen to "Don't Laugh At Me"!
The Best!.......2000-07-02
"Wish You Were Here", makes you cry, "She's In Love", makes you feel the pain that the singer's going through, "Don't Laugh At Me" makes you think, and "I Do (Cherish You)", makes you smile. For that, i give this album the full 5 stars. Every song on here is a keeper, there's not a bad one in the bunch. After hearing this album, i got to scratch my head at why Mark isn't the biggest star in country music right now. If you like great songs and a breathtaking voice, pick this up!

Roger Waters may have moved on, but here the boys prove that they still have what it takes to kick out a flawless live performance. This is an absolutely excellent song, immaculately recorded, from an absolutely stunning tour. If you don't yet own 'Pulse' they this would be a good starter to let you know what you're missing. Just Listen to It!.......2004-03-11
As a longtime fan of Incubus and also a classical music wonk, I had to buy this CD. I read the reviews of this album after I listened to it all the way through about twice and fell in love, but the reviews disappointed me. Obviously, people have a problem with changing what are already good songs. Also, it seems like most of the reviewers aren't listening hard enough, as all of the best songs are very easily recognizable. The only misses on this CD, the Morning View songs, frankly weren't that great to begin with. The Warmth is the best track here, becuase the slightly ominous tune was captured perfectly by strings. Make Yourself and Drive are also very good. With the exception of the Morning View songs, the composer chose the songs to reproduce with a great amount of consideration, because only the melodic Make Yourself tunes translate into classical. No one would have enjoyed a string version of Certain Shade of Green or Hilikus. All in all, a great buy, but if you don't like classical or if you only began listening to Incubus with the Morning View Sessions, then don't bother, because you just won't appreciate it.
Expected more!.......2004-01-04
As a big Incubus fan and a violinist, I thought this CD had the potential to be fabulous. I will say that you can recognize most of the songs, and it is a peaceful, tranquil way to listen to Incubus. However, often the strings sound similar to tuning instruments in an Elementary School orchestra (boy does that take me back!). Perhaps they could have selected more experienced artists, because the Incubus songs are so beautiful.
soo bad.......2003-11-25
this is the worst version of any incubus song, even my cat could wail an incubus song better than this. even if i ever did recognize any not of this as being an incubus song, its still crap. Most of this CD is an unrecognizable slice of junk. Buy a proper INCUBUS cd!
HOLY ka-NOLY! hot DANCER SPA-coal-EE!!!.......2003-09-27
very well done. musically creative. if you truely apriciate incubus, and you also appriciate the classical music. this album was put together very well. its a good album to relax to while driving and you just want to be calm.or sleeping to or whatever.
you can TOTALLY tell what songs are what. and after listening to this album, you will have a new look on incubus and there creativity. but seriously...i know music. and this is good and well thought out music. ---chuck says "enjoy incubus!"

Fantastic Collaboration.......2000-07-20
Driving home from work one day I heard "I Want To Be The One" on public radio and knew I had to have this album! This song combines poignant harmonica and guitar, and beautiful new ways to say "I love you". You may think you have never heard of Bobby Charles but this Louisianan wrote all the songs on this album and that includes two classics, "See You Later Alligator" and "Walking to New Orleans". Add in several members of Willie Nelson's band (including Willie), and a little backup singing by Willie Nelson and Fats Domino, and this album comes together as a fantastic collaboration of great talents. How much better can it get? The album also has quite a few good party songs, starting off with a great beat in "Not Ready Yet". And you definitely don't want to miss "The Mardi Gras Song" - it evokes the whole Mardi Gras scene for a mere fraction of the cost!. In "Promises, Promises (The Truth Will Set You Free)", Bobby expresses a few opinions about behaviors on the "road to the White House". "I Want To Be The One" remains my favorite and says exactly what I want to say to my husband, but there are other pretty ones included here too. "I Remember When", "I Don't See Me" and the title song, "Wish You Were Here Right Now" are very fine. In fact - there is not one single cut that we don't like - that is saying something! 5 Stars for Bobby Charles and his wonderful guests on this album!

"Remember when you were young... you shone like the sun... SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND!".......2007-07-01
You hear a lot about how Dark Side was a tough act to follow, and how Wish is slightly worse than Dark Side as a result. But I say no. It took me a while to realize this, but WYWH is my favorite Pink Floyd album. It's much more personal than Dark Side, particularly the sincere title track. Damn and a bucket of chicken wings, THAT is a song. Heartfelt, tender, sincere, good lyrics, love the guitar riff. My favorite PF song, ever. I also think the humming of the riff near the end is a nice touch. So is the pedal steel. Song hits hard. Of course it's about Syd Barrett, as is the album's other major piece: Shine on You Crazy Diamond. Both parts are perfect. The first is highlighted by Gilmour's blues-guitar playing and saxophone solos; the second, a long, innovative keyboard solo. And the lyrics are just beautiful. To top it off, I love that faint, dribbling synth in the beginning. Good stuff. Two of PF's best moments. For whatever reason Crazy Diamond is divided in half - I think that it kind of disturbs its flow - but that's just a minor quibble. As for the other two songs, needless to say they can't match the aforementioned. But I like 'em. I used to despise Welcome to the Machine with every fiber of my being( well, maybe not *that* much, but I didn't like it). Still, it creates a wonderful eerie atmmosphere, and it has grown on me. Especially the beginning - those monotone voices going, "WELCOME MY SON, WELCOME TO THE MACHINE..." The first industrial song? I'd bet on it. The bluesy Have a Cigar (sung by Roy Harper) provides well-needed comic relief - a sarcastic attack on the music industry.
So there you have it. Great, GREAT album, better than even Animals or The Dark Side of the Moon. Can't recommended it highly enough. You gotta have it!
Elegant, Progressive and all Floyd.......2006-09-11
I often have a hard time putting into words the beauty of the music in a CD. I also have a tendency to say that some music is so good it can't truly be described with words, and then spend nearly a thousand words inadequately describing it. This CD, one of the best rock or progressive rock CDs of all time, falls into that category. Regardless of what you say about the music and the lyrics and their depth and elegance, you'll never approach the beauty and eloquence of the artists. The best a reviewer can do in print is attempt to describe the experience and attempt in some poor fashion to explain how the music can make the astute listener feel.
The album is dedicated to Pink Floyd's original lead singer, the late Syd Barrett, and does so directly with two songs. The other songs address how difficult the entertainment business is. The lyrics are often roaringly hilarious, and yet the seriousness with which the music is played is bizarrely incongruous. Pink Floyd's skill with their instruments and their lyrical skill came together to bring us five works of art that will always be a standard for others, and themselves.
The CD opens with "Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Part One," which consists of the first five portions of the song, the remaining four portions making up Part Two as the fifth song on the CD. The song opens with a synthesizer and guitar; somber, serious, haunting, beautiful, elegant. The guitar provides a simple transition to the drums kicking off a bluesy portion of the song. Eventually Roger Water's heartfelt vocals kick in the lyrics, which lament those caught up in the success of the entertainment industry, which is likened to a machine in the second song.
The second song is so filled with synthesizers that some people who've never heard "Welcome to the Machine" (if you can imagine such a thing) think it is from the electronic eighties. Crank your bass up for this song as the synthesizers provide a bone jarring background for the lyrics. Pink Floyd used an acoustic guitar to front the synthesizers and result is surprising and wonderful and indescribable. Another cool instrument in this song is the timpani. Few, if any, rock groups have used timpani in such a prominent way within a song. If you enjoy progressive rock and synthesizers, and simple music that is subtly complex, this song is the epitome of all that and more. This song is my favorite on this CD, and perhaps my favorite Pink Floyd song.
"Have a Cigar" is cynical and is the most humorous song on the CD. The commercialism of the music industry in particular is lambasted, even though most rock artists have succumbed to the pressure at various times in their careers. The song is all Pink Floyd, and yet, I hear an influence in this song from The Who's "Tommy." This song is the least progressive rock song on the CD, yet the music is sumptuous and full, with excellent guitar work. The ending on this song is quite novel as the sound level drops as though there was an electronic problem, or perhaps the group no longer was sufficiently popular that they were backed by the music industry as they were when they were popular.
"Wish You Were Here" opens as intriguingly as "Have a Cigar Closed." It sounds as though someone is tuning an AM radio, listening to various stations, until they run across this song. There is even a high pitched tone in the background that was often present as noise on some AM stations, which slowly fades away as the song progresses. The song laments the loss of Syd Barrett from the group, and eloquently wishes he was still with them.
The album closes with the second part of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Part Two," which is parts six through nine. A synthesizer once again commands a critical part of the music, with the guitars providing counterpoint. The music transitions from the opening as the guitars take the forefront and the synthesizer drops into the background. The lead and bass guitars are phenomenal. The instrumental portions leading into the song and exiting the song make up the bulk of this track, and allow the track to experiment with the sounds and feeling of the musical theme. Rather than cutting a wonderful song short the group took their time to explore the possibilities and let the music lead them where it would.
"Wish You Were Here" is a musical experience that can only be understood by being a participant. My words are too poor to provide even a fraction of what this progressive rock gives you in feelings from the words and music playing off each other. In the pantheon of music that makes up progressive rock, Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" will always be a standard of excellence against which other works of music may be measured, including Pink Floyd's own music. "Wish You Were Here" is in some ways better than the ground-breaking album "Dark Side of the Moon." The theme on "Wish You Were Here" is more mundane, but less pretentious than that of "Dark Side of the Moon," and the music and lyrics are readily accessible. A must have in any progressive rock collection.
Note that there is more than one version of this CD available, with varying prices. Please consider which version best meets your needs before buying.
Enjoy!
