Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Romberg The Magnificent.......2007-01-04

If you don't appreciate Sigmund Romberg, you have no soul.

I wish the CD would have included his "Shadows on the Moon" (from "The Girl of the Golden West")sung by the devine, Perfect Ingenue, Jeanette Mac Donald. That musical oater was based on a Puccini Opera & play and included brilliant performances by Nelson Eddy who was trim and in excellent voice.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ", September 11, 2006

The "best version" of the "Merry Widow" is NOT this one. The best version is the one with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved that rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note LOUDER than the chorus---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, the Bronhill CD is made in Holland and "there is one left", so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Joan Sutherland under the baton of Richard Bonynge.......2004-02-24

THE MERRY WIDOW, Franz Lehar's dizzying and delightful operetta chestnut, is given the grand treatment in this highlights album featuring Joan Sutherland.

There have been many widows (including June Bronhill, Anna Moffo, Beverly Sills), though Joan Sutherland's WIDOW has always been especially grand. The supporting cast on this recording features Werner Krenn as Count Danilo with Valerie Masterson as Valencienne, Regina Resnik as Zo-Zo and John Brecknock as Camille, with Francis Egerton, John Fryatt, Graeme Ewer and the Ambrosian Singers.

Sutherland's performance as Hanna Glawari is full of masterful strokes and she approaches the score with a twinkle in her eye, aware of the comedy in the piece. Richard Bonynge conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra and they are especially chill-inducing with the Overture.

All-in-all a superlative recording at a bargain price.

Performances better than the recording.......2004-01-18

Unfortunately this CD was made from the Australian TV tapeing of The Merry Widow, a shame that the microphones are not of high enough quality to capture the really fine performances, it is hard enough to understand what is being sung when properly recorded let alone when the equipment stinks, however if you enjoy Joan Southerland as much as I do you can overlook the flaws in the recording and just get carried away with the voice, it would be nice if a libretto had been included, a rarity today, that used to be common in the era of the LP

Excellent Song.......2007-05-27

Just continuing on what people said here, it truly is a great song. I do too, prefer russell watson's version of this song. However, they changed the title of Russel's version to Where My Heart Will Take Me. I guess they didn't want to scare off people using the word Faith, which I think is ridiculous. Either way, great song for motivation and for a pick me up when times are tough.

Enterprise version available...........2006-04-25

If, like me, you first heard this song as the theme for Enterprise you can find it by searching for 'Enterprise' under music. The full version of this song is on the soundtrack and is 4:11, not 1:02 as reported by someone else here.

Stewart's version is good but the Enterprise version is better, at least for me. Perhaps it is because that is the version I heard first.

know your versions.......2005-05-29

Just to clarify for those who (like me) are confused - Diane Warren wrote the song and Rod Stewart sang the original whilst Russell Watson sang a cover version specifically for the TV show "Star Trek Enterprise". If you heard the TV version first, as I did, then I would strongly suggest you get Russell Watson's version (there is a full length version depsite what you may read here) - the TV version has a more orchestral backing and I find it a more powerful song as a result, though fans of Rod will not be disappointed by his version either. Whichever you buy hats off to Diane Warren for writing such a great song.

INCREDIBLE SYNCHRONICITY.............2005-01-09

I heard this song for the first time just last week...I was drawn to go into a drugstore to purchase something and this was playing. I only heard a few of the lyrics, but KNEW it was for me....And, I knew the voice, but couldn't put the name to it. Today I remembered to look it up and discovered it was Rod stewart. Then I read the entire lyrics and I just sat here and cried...I have had one of the most painful challenging years of my life...I am getting ready to make a major geographical change and this song, in my belief was divinely sent to me - to help me to remember that I can do it - that I can do anything....as long as I remember to have 'Faith of the Heart'....This is a song I will listen to over and over and over....

Truly Faithful.......2002-08-29

I must admit, when I heard Rod Stewart sing this song from the movie Patch Adams, I really enjoyed it. It was the first soundtrack song I've absolutely enjoyed in years. I just don't know why Rod never put the song on any of his albums.

I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.

classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16

Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.

Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.

Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!

Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

Percy Faith is the master of arranging selections by other composers ~ take for instance this original two LP's on one CD "Bon Voyage" (CS 8214 in 1960) and "Carefree" (CS 8360 in 1961-all songs composed by Percy Faith) ~ his tasteful treatments always highlights the quality of the composition, ultimately making them a hit all over again. Faith's formula was always to keep the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive signature style ~ with the wave of his baton, the Percy Faith award winning orchestra is ready to strut their stuff.

Powerful Worship Album.......2005-05-14

This is an excellent recording. My favorite thing about it is the candid and very meaningful lyrics of worship of the Lord. It is not a typical worship album. In my opinion, the lyrics are more meaningful, and the music is well, different. I LOVE it! You will find this album is slower paced than many of The Violet Burning's projects, and you might take some time to warm up to it, but once you do it will most likely be one of your favorites. A must have for anyone.

Gets under your skin.......2005-01-31

This CD was the first I heard by TVB, and at first I wasn't that taken with it. Honestly, I thought it was nice enough, but I thought it was a bit long and drawn-out.

My music tatse matured over a couple of years, and after seeing them live, I realised that this was one great band. The CD came alive, and these gentle original songs began to get under my skin.

"Clean", "Invitacion Fountain" and "Forty Weight" especially are absolutely fantastic songs. Beautifully recorded and arranged. Truly an "alternative" CD, with a very overtly praise-centred theme- this is well worth having in your collection.

The VB--still Christian music's undiscovered best.......2004-04-11

Let's say, if you are reading this review, you are one of three types of people: (1) not Christian, but interested in music and heard rumors about the Violet Burning; (2) Christian, interested in worship and living for God, but turned off by the plethora of pop worship CDs springing up everywhere; (3) somewhere in between, looking for something better than you currently have. Well, friends, you've hit the right group. No one (in any of the above categories) to whom I've lent any of my VB CDs has not liked them intensely. "Faith and Devotions" is probably VB's most overtly "worshipful" recording since "Strength" (their best recording, in my opinion). "Demonstrates Plastic and Elastic," "I Am a Stranger in this Place," and their self-titled release, all have a somewhat darker, more brooding sound (hence the frequent comparisons to The Cure and similar groups). This CD, on the other hand, just pours out the heart, whether it's broken, angry, or full of joy, and lifts the listener to God. Here's a listening tip: Don't listen just to the opening of the songs to see whether or not they sound catchy. In Mike Pritzl's style of songwriting, very often the real heart of the song, the hook that catches your spiritual core, comes somewhere around the middle to the end. Then you find yourself singing along, over and over ("Lord, my cup is empty--won't You come now and fill me up?" is a case in point). In case you haven't figured it out yet--I highly recommend this CD, as well as the others mentioned. (For "Strength," try E-Bay.)

The music is very enjoyable. I especially liked Doc Severinsen's contribution on a few pieces. Percy Faith is always solid, and this collection is no exception. The Gershwin sounds much better than Most Happy Fella because of the stereo sound compared to mono.

The greatness of George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess", can only amplify melody of music can exist without lyric ~ and our legendary composer/arranger performs his "Percy Faith Touch". Mr. Faith was chumping at the bit to do this project ~ with sweeping arrangements and full orchestration that leaves no stone unturned. Highlighting ~ "SUMMERTIME", "I GOT PLENTY O' NUTTIN'", "IT AIN'T NECESSARILY SO", "I LOVES YOU, PORGY", "THERE'S A BOAT THAT'S LEAVIN' SOON" and my favorite of favorites "MY MAN'S GONE NOW", attentive haunting strings with echoing saxophones each musician reaching into the depths of their soul for this one ~ they were George Ockner (violin), Bernie Leighton (piano), "Doc" Severinsen (trumpet), Jimmie Abato (alto sax), Russ Banzer (tenor sax), Terry Snyder (drums), Phil Kraus (mallets), Lucien Schmidt (cello) and Harold Feldman (oboe).

Another well received show was Frank Loesser's "The Most Happy Fella", with some great musical selections that Mr. Faith has given his full attention and the arrangements are exuberant. Such as the opening tracks "THE MOST HAPPY FELLA", "STANDING ON THE CORNER", "ABBONDANZA", "SPOSALIZIO", "FRESNO BEAUTIES" and "BIG D", sure to please all fans of Musicals and Broadway Shows ~ this one has your name on it.

A must have for those rainy afternoons with a good book ~ entire album of twenty-seven selections is simply captivating and highly listenable. Percy Faith is still larger that life and his music will live through us his fans ~ and go on forever.
