Smartly-played account of Gulley's musical heritage, warm voice & easy-going, avuncular style.......2007-04-29

Playing Time - 42:22 -- Bluegrass runs in the family. Until hearing this album, I never realized that Grasstowne guitarist Steve Gulley is the son of Don Gulley, an original member of the Pinnacle Mountain Boys in the 1960s and early 1970s. An exceptional band that featured twin fiddles and fine singing, they reformed as the Pinnacle Boys after some personnel changes. "Sounds Like Home" includes a father and son rendition (along with one of his former employers, Doyle Lawson) of a favorite hymn, "Nearer My God To Thee." The set also includes two numbers from the Pinnacle Mountain Boys, "Little So & So" and "Cheater of the Year." The latter appeared on the band's 1974 Rounder LP.

A former member of Mountain Heart, Steve Gulley gives us a very solid set of bluegrass with a traditional underpinning. In keeping with his solo album's title, "Sounds Like Home" has handpicked songs that reflect his musical upbringing, heritage and heart. Besides the nods to his father's keystone repertoire, Gulley selected four gospel numbers from the old "Red Book" Baptist hymnal. Vic Graves provides spiritually-infused reverence in the lead vocalizing on "No Not One." Arranged as a vocal quartet, "Prepare To Meet Thy God" also features a cameo appearance by J.D. Crowe and is one of two songs on the disc with Dale Ann Bradley's vocal harmony. A featured vocalist at Renfro Valley Barn Dance, Steve's wife Debbie provides another silky smooth feminine touch to the album on the country duet, "My Elusive Dreams." Other secular offerings include "The Grand Tour" (a hit for George Jones), "Another Day" (a Reno & Smiley nugget), and Steve's self-penned "Mountain Heart" (about a love of his east Tennessee mountain home). The latter has all of his former Mountain Heart bandmates in the mix. In classic brother duet style, Steve sings a tenor to Barry Abernathy's lead on "All Alone" to close the album with a vintage 1930s sound of two voices accompanied only by guitar and mandolin.

Whether Steve's bluegrass thread is hereditary or more recently sewn, his supporting musicians also sound like extended family of old friends and close relatives. To obtain a cohesive, balanced overall sound on the album, Gulley enlisted a core group of stellar guests including Tim Stafford (guitar), Adam Steffey (mandolin), Ron Stewart (banjo), Randy Kohrs (Dobro), Tim Crouch (fiddle), and Jason Moore (bass). Russell Moore sings tenor on "Cheater of the Year," Jeff Parker sings tenor on "Livin' It Down," and Shawn Lane sings tenor on three cuts.

While we're looking forward to an album from Steve's new band, "Sounds Like Home" is a genial and uplifting statement of his own individuality and creativity. Making a solo album can be a challenge. Most of the leading, directing and decision-making fall on one's own shoulders. An artist has few boundaries unless they are self-imposed. Steve only plays guitar on two of the songs so this CD is mostly a smartly-played account of his musical heritage, warm voice and easy-going, avuncular style. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Playing Time - 33:45 -- Resophonic guitarist Randy Kohrs is a well-known Nashville session musician who has also released three previous solo album projects. His fourth, "I'm Torn," is an all-bluegrass album that will appeal to fans of all ages. Kohrs wrote or co-wrote all but two of the songs, produced, engineered, and mixed all the music on this disc. With the help of 15 noteworthy musicians including Scott Vestal, Jay Weaver, Cody Kilby, Josh Williams, Tim Crouch, and others, the result is a contemporary gift full of energy and velocity. Carl Jackson and Dolly Parton appear with Kohrs at track three, "It Looked Good On Paper" (written by Jackson with Pam Tillis). What ??.......2006-12-10

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

"On the Rise" marks the third highly successful release from Blue Moon Rising, a lively Tennessee-based bluegrass group. This emerging band only has about five years under their belts, and their 2002 "Where Wood Meets Steel" CD (Crosscut CR 1133) brought the national spotlight in their direction. Now, "On the Rise" is sure to launch them to an even higher level of international attention and acclaim. BMR is Chris West (guitar), Keith Garrett (mandolin, guitar two tracks), Randall Massengill (tenor vocal, guitar one track), Justin Jenkins (banjo), and Tim Tipton (bass). Jenkins' banjo-playing shows his strong influence of the styling of J.D. Crowe. BMR also added guitarist/tenor singer Randall Massengill within the recent past. Randall spent 9 years playing guitar and singing with the bluegrass gospel band, New Road. On this project, the band's third album, guest dobro-player Randy Kohrs joins in on three song, while award-winning fiddler Ron Stewart provides just the right touch on seven tracks. Jenkin's and Garrett's original instrumental "Sling Blade" gives all the picks a chance to shine. Stewart also engineered this album.

Like "Where Wood Meets Steel," this album emphasizes originals, mostly written by band members. Chris West has a flair for songsmithing, and he contributes some fine material to the bluegrass canon. Tipton and Garrett also get involved in the songwriting. It's a good team and collaborative approach to build the band's peerless sound. Lead vocals are also passed around between Garrett, West and Massengill. The band's quartet is featured on "Holy Manna," with Jenkins handling the baritone vocal harmony. This album offers plenty of highlights, and a radio programmer can't go wrong by airing any of the songs. Some personal favorites are Modern Day Outlaw, PaPaw Taught Me, The Crime I'm Guilty of, I Keep Callin', and He Arose.

I like the many diversified and sundry influences in this band's music. It's tricky to write, arrange and record a healthy body of original material that reflects both a traditional consciousness and contemporary innovativeness. The creativity and aptitude of Blue Moon Rising give them an unconditional and thoroughly enthralling sound. Bluegrass fare with significant flair! Based on their high potential and cohesive sound, they've got my vote for emerging artists of the year. Time is the best song about aging that I've ever heard.......2007-03-31

Much of this album is good, but maybe not better than a lot of others, either of Lou Reid and Carolina's or of other people. But that one song, the title track, gives my 5-star rating to the whole shebang. The song is full of clever word-play, but is also the most poignant, sad and totally valid depiction of how an older person feels about time. I'm over sixty now, and time is different than it once was - and this song catches it. It starts out "When I was young, I dreamed of being older. Now that I'm older, I dream of being young," and goes on in parallel thoughts turned inside out like that. It is almost depressing beyond toleration - but it's so right-on, it both saddens and comforts my aging mind. This feeling I have is normal. "Each day you add a number to the things I'll never be." Zing. "When I was young, the road went on forever, but now that I'm older, I see it isn't so. Once I took my time - now time is taking me."

Playing Time - 44:25 -- Lou Reid sings about livin' the mountain way, but he also clearly shows how to play the mountain way too. With a fresh body of bluegrass material from excellent songwriters, Reid and Carolina show us why they're a notch above the rest of the pack. On "Time," he puts added emphasis on beautiful, life-affirming tales, courtesy of such songsmiths as Mike Evans, David Carroll, John Cadley, Shawn Camp, Mark Brinkman, Teddy Cosby, and others. A song like Ray Edwards/Terry Foust's "Carolina Morning Memory" captures much of the feeling and reason for the band's name in the first place. Carolina moon, Carolina rain, Carolina morning, and Carolina memories are all embodiments of this band's bluegrass. Reid's voice, as fine and steady as always, is centerstage most of the time, but Christy Reid and Kevin Richardson also get a chance to shine with some lead vocals on "Before Your First Tear Hits the Ground" and "Forever Ain't No Trouble Now," respectively. With a bit more tempo and some twin fiddles in a piece like "Forever Ain't No Trouble Now," Lou Reid and Carolina's music would hit me in the gut with an impact like the first time I heard Bill Monroe's. An uptempo song like "Tennessee Backroads" would have a little more bluegrass gusto by simply bringing the instrumental breaks, especially guitar and mandolin, front and center into our speakers. Their clean breaks deserve to be heard loudly, crisply and clearly.

Lou was born on a North Carolina tobacco farm and grew up around music. His impressive bluegrass experience includes stints with Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Ricky Skaggs, Seldom Scene, and Longview. Also from North Carolina, Christy Reid's grandfather was a fiddle champion at the first Union Grove Fiddler's Convention, and her cousin (Kent Dowell) played with the Country Gentlemen.. Her previous bands have included Grass Vibrations, 220 Connection, and Southern Drive (a 2000 International Pizza Hut Showdown winner). Christy and Lou married in Florida on 04/12/04. Banjo-player Trevor Watson contributes a hard-driving style to the Carolina sound. His mother and father both played bluegrass, and Trevor was picking by age eight. Trevor won first place in the "bluegrass banjo" contest at the Galax Old-time Fiddler's Convention. His former bands include Blue Night, Foxfire Unlimited (Bluegrass Band contest winners at the 1988 Galax Fiddlers' Convention), and with the cast of The Carolina Opry in Myrtle Beach. Guitarist Kevin Richardson has been playing since age 5. He's won many ribbons in Fiddler's Competitions across the Southeast. Last but not least, Joe Hannabach plays bass for Carolina. As a band, Carolina received the "Emerging Artist of the Year" Award at IBMA's 1994 World of Bluegrass Awards in Owensboro, KY.

On "Time," instrumental guests include Jerry Douglas, Ron Stewart, and Randy Kohrs. Some vocal guests include Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill on the title cut, along with Harold Nixon on acoustic bass. A Buck Owens/Red Simpson song, "Heart of Glass" also includes James Mitchell's high strung guitar and Chris Wood's snare drum in the mix. The credits say it's also known as a "slap guitar" for the bluegrass purists. The songs give us imagery with plenty of comforting warmth. Playing Time - 37:07 -- Don't know about you but I like my bluegrass with plenty of vim and vigor. That's exactly the kind of tasty material that Darrell Webb serves up. However, I'm curious as to why he didn't lay in some vocal harmony on the opening cut, "I Beg You Little Darling Not to Cry," which was featured on Volume 73 of Prime Cuts of Bluegrass.

Webb is an expert guitarist, accomplished mandolin-player and also a vocalist with a great range. His experience includes working with JD Crowe & the New South, and Lonesome River Band. He replaced Dan Tyminski the first time that Dan left LRB and has done a couple stints with J.D. Crowe. Webb also has appeared on a couple of Dolly Parton's albums. Now, Darrell is playing in the popular bluegrass band called Wildfire (with Phil Leadbetter, Robert Hale, Curt Chapman and Carry Crabtree).

Darrell's reputation as a songwriter is also well-known as some of his songs appear on CDs by Lonesome River Band and Lou Reid & Carolina. His originals on this CD include "Mother's Hand," "Imagine That," "Behind the Scenes," and "Get on the Path."

Back in 1998, Darrell's first solo album, "Webbsite," came out and was received with much critical acclaim. This West Virginian's latest endeavor, "Behind the Scenes" features a great cast -- Ron Stewart, Randy Kohrs, Beth Lawrence, Harold Nixon, Phil Leadbetter, Dolly Parton, Dwight McCall, Michael Cleveland, Richard Bennet, Shannon Slaughter, Megan Mccormick, Angela Oudean, Keisha Gillis and others. Dolly's lead vocals are featured on her composition, "Cold," and it's awesome to hear Stewart and Webb singing low harmonies with her.

Personal favorite tracks are "Thank You Father For My Dad" and "Imagine That." I guess the only thing I didn't really care much for were the CD's front and back out-of-focus photos. This album deserved better graphics to correlate with the music's professionalism. However, I'm sure that a market test indicated that a majority (as well as Darrell) liked that design for the cover of an album entitled "Behind the Scenes." Just take my advice and don't judge this book by its out-of-focus cover.

Darrell Webb's zeal for bluegrass is indisputable. What's evident on this CD are the soaring vocals, nimble-fingered breaks, and perfectly piquant songs that convey plenty of good taste. I can see why Darrell has been called one of bluegrass music's favorite entertainers. This album really packs a punch. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Playing Time - 39:38 -- Lonesome River Band's mandolin player and vocalist Jeff Parker gives us a stellar bluegrass gospel album that includes material from Rick Bartley, David Carroll, Tim Stafford, Rick Bartley, Vern Gosdin, Louvin Brothers, Bill Castle, Shannon Hess and others. The CD jacket contains all lyrics. Varied tempos, keys and rhythms give us a spiritually-tinged project that covers many musical moods with Jeff's smooth lead vocals always in the forefront. Fourteen cuts are backed by an all-star cast of the bluegrass elite. The session musicians include Harold Nixon, Wayne Fields, Steve Gulley, Don Gulley, Tim Stafford, Randy Kohrs, Ron Stewart, Russell Moore and others.

Jeff Parker was born in 1961 and began playing guitar at age six. His father (Vester Parker) was a musician at the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. At age 12, Jeff saw his first live performance of the Russell Brothers and was amazed with the mandolin. Harold Russell lent Jeff a mandolin, and he started playing that instrument with his family band, Sounds of Gospel. Jeff's first professional gig was as a fill-in mandolin player for Larry Sparks on a Renfro Valley show. At age 19, Jeff and other friends formed a band called Train 45 that played for a couple of years. At age 25, Jeff was hired as a full time staff musician at Renfro Valley. He worked there until 1994. From 1995-2001, Jeff, his brother Mike, Terry Wolfe, and David Osborne, played in the band Wilderness Trail. In 2001, Jeff auditioned with the Lonesome River Band, and he has been their mandolin player and singer ever since. "Two Roads to Travel" is Jeff's long awaited solo album that is sure to win the hearts of bluegrass gospel fans everywhere.

Jeff Parker's touching, harmony-rich gospel numbers are performed and sung with deep conviction and reverence. Without proselytizing, Parker's straight-ahead Christian messages clearly bring joy to his and our hearts. "Two Roads to Travel" is an unqualified triumph among the large body of bluegrass gospel releases.
