The Best of Traffic [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
The Best of Traffic is an excellent sampler of their best work with Dave Mason. For the casual fan, this is a good place to start. However, the three albums covered by this release Mr. Fantasy, Traffic, and Last Exit are essential in their own right. So, you may want to start here, but you certainly shouldn't stop here! Format: CD Cat. No: TEG 3307 Label: P&P Records Available: AUG 22nd The cleverly deceptive genius Patrick Adams was born March 17, 1950 in New York City. Some people are just destined for greatness and Adams was one of those. He wrote his first song at 12, recorded his first record at 16 and produced his first track at 17. It would take several more years for the world to realize his genius. In 1966 Patrick joined a neighborhood group and they immediately auditioned for a role in Up The Down Staircase. The boys won the part of the high school dance band and are featured in a segment of the Warner Brothers film. Two months later the guys, now known as The Sparks, were signed to Curb/MGM. But after failing to chart the label quickly dropped them. The Sparks continued performing and touring together for four more years. Patricks next success came the following year (1967) when he wrote Youve Got To Learn Something for the childrens show Sesame Street. In 1970 Adams left the group to take a job as A&R Vice-President of Perception/Today Records. During that period he also worked as a sideman with numerous artists like Astrud Gilberto and Les Variations. In 1974 Patrick teamed up with Peter Brown to form P&P Records. The label was distributed by Morris Levys Roulette Records and housed the sub-labels Queen Constance, Heavenly Star, Jay Star, Chocolate Star Records and many more. He also started PAPMUS his own production company. During the next four years, as disco was emerging, Adams became a key figure in its growth scoring countless hits including: Atmosphere Strut with Cloud One, My Babys Got E.S.P. with Four Below Zero, and Lady Bug by Bumblebee Unlimited. 1978 was Patricks breakthrough year. The infamous song was In The Bush. I did not sit down and invent the phrase Push Push In The Bush in a moment of meditative genius. I was in the recording studio looking for a chant to put on the chorus of this last hot track for the Musique album. I was thinking out loud of my older brother and his friends. Sometimes they would chant - To The Bush. This was a reference to a dance club that they frequented. A true indicator of how times have change, the first time Patrick played the cut for his label head honcho Marv Schlacther yelled, Patrick, I CANT PUT THAT OUT! After some serious discussion it was decided that it would be included on the album but not promoted as a single. About three weeks later, the cover story on Billboard Magazine was that about 600 radio stations were banning some naughty record called Push Push In The Bush! exclaims Patrick. The rest as they say is history. Over the course of the next three years Patrick Adams racked up an impressive 22 hits. As the disco-era changed, so too did Adams. In the 1980s he would lend his creative genius to such notable acts as Salt N Pepa, Keith Sweat and Carol Lynn Townes. In the 1990s he helmed recordings by Eric B. & Rakim, Paul Lekakis and Morris Day. Patrick has received the ASCAP Songwriter Of The Year award three times. He has multiple Gold and Platinum record awards and at last his very own Best Of collection.

      Product Description

Straight outta Camden, NJ its Chocolate Star. Starting in 1980 Chocolate Star served as the outlet for the music of Gary Davis. Gary started Chocolate Star with his long time Camden compatriot Dennis DJ Jones after a few years spent under the wing of Peter Brown at P&P Records. But Garys storied involvement in music goes back further than that, having studied composition and arrangement with the late jazz great Manny Albam. Garys musical education actually started earlier than that as one of the people he learned the most from was his Uncle, famed jazz organist Richard Groove Holmes. When you combined the funk Mr. Davis inherited from Groove, with the street-sense of Peter Brown with the skillful composition and arrangements learned from Manny Albam, youve got Chocolate Star. Playing with a band composed of (very talented) people from his Camden neighborhood Davis released cut after cut of solid funk filled dance music. Theyre all compiled here, from the Joe Sample inspired Gee Dee, to one of first commercial releases to lay the beat down with a drum machine in The Pop. Of course prominently featured is the legendary mover Gotta Get Your Love. Chocolate Star The Very Best of Gary Davis has been assembled with Mr. Davis and whenever possible using Garys original masters. These cuts bridge the disco era, into Hop Hop and the earliest forms of House. Talented, versatile, and still able to get you out of your chair and shaking your behind... this is Chocolate Star. This is the very best of Gary Davis.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD for KRS-One completists.......2007-05-04

DJ Scott La Rock and KRS-One, a former social worker and homeless client, respectively, teamed up to form one of the seminal rap groups in hip-hop history. Sadly, La Rock was killed in 1987 as their debut album reached its peak of popularity. This compilation, "Blast Master Tapes" by Traffic Recordings should be looked at as a companion piece to the "Criminal Minded" LP by Boogie Down Productions. Here, for the first time is a comprehensive two-disc anthology of the recordings created by the Boogie Down Productions' members during their short-lived tenure at the indie label B-Boy Records. Songs on the album include several selections from "Criminal Minded", including the title cut, "Poetry", "South Bronx" and more. The first rap recordings by junior B.D.P. member D-Nice are included, like "D-Nice Rocks the House" (which would be reworked for his 1990 Jive single "Just Call Me D-Nice") and "Scott Made Me Funky". An early example of KRS-One's social commentary can be heard on "Say No Brother (crack attack)". The beat-box driven (and vaguely misogynist) "P is Free (original version)" is also heard here (a slightly cleaned-up remix ended up on the Criminal Minded LP). Also of special note is the single "$ucce$$ is the Word", by the one-and-done obscure rap group 12:41, which featured KRS-One on vocals, and is considered to be his first recording on vinyl. The liner notes are mildly illuminating, and they apparently include Scott La Rock's funeral obituary.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unique sound, superb performances of sensitive arrangements.......2003-02-23

There are only a few outstanding rock singers. Steve Winwood is one of the very best of the best. His voice sounds so distinctive that nobody has ever been able to create that soulful, sensuous, strident sound.

This album was my introduction to Traffic many years ago and it still sounds interesting after 35 years. The band uses interesting tone colours which, while they are individual, cannot help but make you remember those weird psychedelic bands of the late 60s. I love Chris Wood's creative sax and flute. The sitar in Paper Sun is so effective. Hole in My Shoe is so over-the-top and pretentious that I love it!

There is plenty of variety in the album: no two songs sound the same. A few have been splendidly recorded by other artists, including Feeling All Right [Joe Cocker] and Smiling Phases [Blood, Sweat and Tears], but, wonderful as these are, you can't beat the original versions.

      Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "We are not like all the rest...".......2002-07-24

Traffic had one of the most original (and interesting) sounds in British rock, and not only because of their eclectic musical influences, which embraced psychedelia, folk, jazz, soul, R&B, and even classical. Their unique sound was also the result of their unusual instrumentation. While the group went through a number of personnel changes, its constant core members were Steve Winwood (vocals, keyboards, guitars), Chris Wood (sax, flute, and organ), and Jim Capaldi (drums & percussion). With no regular bass player, Winwood often filled in with the bass pedals on his organ. And, while there is no lack of guitars on most Traffic recordings, the guitar is not emphasized or particularly important to the group's sound. Dave Mason came and went in their early years and, on other recordings, Steve Winwood would switch to guitar, with Chris Wood taking over organ duties. In short, Traffic was anything but your typical guitar-bass-drums rock outfit. And, with "white Ray Charles" prodigy Winwood at the helm, and with their willingness to experiment with virtually any sound or musical style, they cut some of the most distinctive and important records in British rock.

"The Best of Traffic" is an excellent LP-length sampler of their best work with Dave Mason. For the casual fan, this is a good place to start. However, the three albums covered by this release ("Mr. Fantasy," "Traffic," and "Last Exit") are essential in their own right. So, you may want to start here, but you certainly shouldn't stop here.

3 out of 5 stars As far as greatest hits packages go..........2000-01-28

As far as greatest hits packages go this one has alot more misses than "hits", stay with the original three albums of which this release is representitive of, Last Exit, Traffic and Dear Mr.Fantasy, also of interest might be John Barleycorn, Blind Faith and Welcome to the Canteen.

      5 out of 5 stars Don't Forget 40,000 Headmen.......1999-11-26

Just wanted to add to all the positive comments here that in my opinion "40,000 Headmen" is one of the best rock recordings EVER. The lyrics are a lot more interesting than "Paper Sun" and "Feelin' All Right" (both of which I also like very much), and the music is haunting. The flute playing, so prominent in "40,000 Headmen," is what made Traffic a standout group back in the late 60s, and I do NOT agree with the above reviewer who seems to think that Traffic was some sort of transition and that the group members went on to bigger and better things individually--no matter their future efforts, Traffic was still the best thing any of them ever did.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of good songs, highlighted by one masterpiece........1999-08-30

Paper Sun and the many other songs on this album are great to listen to. But Feelin' Alright is one of the finest songs ever performed. Dave Mason sings with such emotion, you can just feel his pain. It is a great example of suppressed emotions just transforming an normal individual into an insane one, driven to insanity by severe depression and desperation. In other words, buy this. If you get depressed, listen to this song.

This millenium collection of Traffic harbors a great selection of their songs and "Little Stevie Winwood" is at his best in "Dear Mr. Fantasy". Made me enjoy their music all the more! They really know how to rock...

4 out of 5 stars For the Uninitiated.......2004-03-23

Traffic was one of the finest bands of the clssic rock era. It produced four stellar talents, infused rock with jazz and psycadelia, yet never reached the heights it deserved. This album is a good overview of their better songs, however, it is only a small scratch of a big itch. It is only an overview, for the unititiated. For a real taste of Traffic's spice try the two-cd anthology, which includes some great songs neglected here, like "When the Eagle Flies and "Glad." Personally, I'd recommend you spend the extra bucks and get the double cd.
