1 out of 5 stars Cruel and unusual - negative 1 star.......2005-12-11

It's music like this that drives people insane. You hear it when they put you on hold, you hear it in the elevator, you hear it on the dentist's chair, hear it in the malls. Can't someone stop it? What an annoying record!

5 out of 5 stars Even if you don't previously know Rod Stewart...........2005-06-21

Ever happen along a collection of songs that bring back memories all the way back to childhood and through the how-ever-many-years that follow? Songs that just make you breathe dseply, smile, tear up, and just sit back and enjoy the special genius of American songwriters? Well, this collection fits every corner of the construct.

Not familiar with his previous style of singing made this listener even more aware of how sensitively sung are these oldies but goodies. Stewart's voice is high tenor to almost mezzo-soprano at times and that enhances his presentation. The songs range from Cole Porter to Gershwin to Rodgers and Hart and so many more. Stewart pays attention to the 'verse' of each song - a fact that very few singers take the time to do - and that verse is often a surprising adjunct to the 'chorus' that follows it is so well known that it is tempting to sing along. His interpretations are clearly his own and word changes are made to update some of the real oldies, but never does he allow his superimpositions to hamper the composers' intended messages.

Stewart is joined in duets by such luminaries as Queen Latifah, Cher, Eric Clapton, Bette Midler, and Dolly Parton and the result is fun and adds a bit a variation to the recital. The orchestral arrangements are excellent and the recording itself is superb. This is a wonderful bit of nostalgia exceedingly well performed. Perfect for a long car trip and just an easy afternoon around the house. Highly recommended Grady Harp, June 05

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Subtle, Elegant Perfection.......2003-01-23

Lisa's first recording revealed one of the most natural, warm singers I've heard in a very long time, as well as a big gift for song lyrics. Here, she is in full elegant flower, delivering an impeccable, polished set and showing tremendous artistic growth in the process. There is not one bad second on this record, but my favorites are the title track (Lisa calls it "breathtaking" in her liner notes, and she is right - I can't stop playing it), the very swinging "Almost Like Being in Love", "Isn't it a Pity?" (a revelation here, because many singers just deliver the lyrics, but Lisa sings it full of regret and sadness, along with a surprising and pitch-perfect a cappella verse), and "Robert Frost", which I didn't know before but is really funny. If Lisa has one weakness, it would be that her scatting is not especially inventive, BUT it swings great and every note is right on the money. As she continues to grow and develop, this will probably mature as well. This girl is a marvel of fine jazz singing, completely honest and natural, and her instrumental backup on this disc is stellar. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Does it Again-an absolutely Breathtaking Recording.......2002-12-14

I've been a fan of Lisa's since the very first time I heard her sing. The woman has a gift for lyrics like few singers I have EVER heard, and I've listened to a lot of singers over the years. Her first recording showed so much promise, and on "Lost in a Summer Night", she delivers the goods in spades!

It's hard to know which tracks to recommend the most because there is not a single weak moment on the entire disc. Lisa possesses impeccable taste in songs, and each one is lovely and special in its own way. I guess for me the standouts here are two I'd never heard before, the title track (unbelievable that so few singers have recorded it!) and the sweet "We're the Couple in the Castle", along with perennial favorite "Skylark" (Lisa's version stands up to ANY you have ever heard, I promise), the sad and lovely "Isn't it a Pity?", and the simple and poignant "I Never Went Away." She also shows a real talent for gospel on the "Come Sunday/Sermonette" medley (which really swings!)

Lisa has it all - her high level of musicianship is obvious (and rare among singers!), but it's never just "technical". She combines her musicianship with gorgeous tone and some of the best phrasing in the business (again, that gift for lyrics). This woman is going to go places, mark my words. She continues to grow and mature, and really begins to come into her own on this disc. I'd give it ten stars if I could. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Not from Buffalo. Like it. New heart and emotion.......2001-07-22

Strange that one says the CD is from hunger while the other hungers for more of Civisca. This was my first meeting with him. I love Michael Crawford & Michael Feinstein. He is in a mode with more liveliness and a more jazzy voice. Civisca truly enjoys singing and this performance shows. Like pumpkin pie or oysters, Civisca may not touch you the first time (He did me) but beware: His style and delivery grow on you. The songs in this collection bring back memories of lost love, shared love and love to come. The order of the songs is marvelous. Beginning with the admission of love "nevertheless," he seeks love "where are you," cries "when your lover has gone, tries to rationalize "too young," thinks of the great times "Moonglow and Reminiscing," then smiles remembering "These Foolish Things." Love is contagious and painful. So, "Take it Slow." You will appreciate your lover more as he expresses with the beautiful lyrics in "Because of You." "Because of You" is a precious song and brings back so many memories of the love between my parents and how they grew together, loving each other.

Love may be painful but should we ignore it? It is not better to have avoided love. Tis better to have loved and shared, even with the pain...."Because of You." Civisca shows the beauty of love with the marvelous American classic that has become universal "Smile." The CD will leave you smiling and hitting the "Replay" button.

Turn the lights low, settle back and enjoy in the glow. Civisca helps you feel the moments; past, present and to come. Smile at the love that waits and grows. Civisca puts his heart into the songs and creates Moonglow.

          4 out of 5 stars Wow..........1999-09-26

Having travelled extensively listening to many different singers, I can assure you that Civisca's CD is the real stuff. I won't say he is the best we have ever heard, but being one recording out of the gate, this guy is for sure one of natural talent. I hear so much in his voice. He has the style that this music needs. P. Sullivan Reviewer Washington DC

          1 out of 5 stars Local, Buffalo garbage....skip it.......1999-09-07

Terrible, synthesized arrangements along with a boring and emotionally flat singer....waste of time. It's only value lies with excited Buffalonians who want to see one of thier own do well. That's touching, but he doesn't deserve it. If anything, he should sing local grocery store comercials and leave our "great American Standards" alone. I'm sorry I wasted my money.
