You Win Again
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Van Morrison, never the most predictable of performers, takes yet another odd turn with You Win Again, a collection of rootsy duets with one Linda Gail Lewis. And who is this belter who holds her own while sharing the mic and billing with Van the Man on cuts ranging from Hank Williams's "Jambalaya" to Stephen Foster's "Old Black Joe" to John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillen"? Turns out she's the sister of Jerry Lee Lewis; in fact, Morrison came across her at a Jerry Lee convention in Wales. The unlikely twosome were soon rushing through live studio recordings of a bunch of country, blues, and R&B favorites backed by a rockin' combo. Coming as it does on the heels of Morrison's for-the-fun-of-it Skiffle Sessions, You Win Again signals Morrison's continuing impulse to wallow joyfully in the music of his youth. It's actually superior to The Skiffle Sessions, and while it won't make anyone forget Astral Weeks, so what? There's no reason Morrison fans can't have as much fun listening to You Win Again as their hero apparently had making it. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:
Van Morrison doing classic country? Sweet............2007-02-27
I don't understand why some people have bashed this album. It's not perfect, sure, and it's not one of Van's most stellar achievements....but I am enjoying it thoroughly nonetheless. Why? Because I'm a fan of old-school classic country music and I'm a fan of Van Morrison, and this is like a dream come true. He does a fantastic job of belting out these songs and you can tell how much he loves this music. This is a worthy addition to Van's discography, and a welcome fresh take on classic roots music.
Enjoyable fun music.......2007-01-17
While I am not a great Van Morrison fan, although I have followed his career for more than 40 years [I first saw him live in 1967] I like this little album quite a lot. Country music has never been one of my favorite genres, but Van and Linda make it sound quite enjoyable for me here. Of course it is not one of the great master pieces of the last half century, but I find I often enjoy the little not so polished gems more. Very good backing band and mostly a nice choice of songs [even Cadillac sounds OK to me]. And the fun all the musicians had making this record comes through very clearly. So in my opinion it is definitely enjoyable fun music.
"VAN MORRISON, ALWAYS SOUNDS GOOD".......2006-08-22
I THINK THIS CD WAS GREAT! I WOULD EVEN GIVE IT 4 1/2 STARS.
IT'S NOT THE OLDER VAN MORRISON.YOU CAN,T BE AN ARTIST AND NOT TRY DIFFERENT THINGS, IT GETS BORING. THIS CD HAS SOME R&B AND ROCK~ROLL AND ALSO SOME COUNTRY SOUND TO IT.I THINK LINDA LEWIS PLAYS A GREAT PIANO AND SOUNDS GOOD WITH MORRISON.IT DOESN'T MAKE YOU TIRED,IT MAKES YOU GET UP AND SHAKE YOU BOOTY.I PLAY IT WHEN I FEEL LIKE PARTYING. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A OPEN MIND AND TRY DIFFERENT SOUNDS,THAT'S WHAT MAKES LIFE SO INTERESTING,WITHOUT IT YOUR NOT EXPANDING YOUR HORIZON!! :~)
Not a major item, but an enjoyable, breezy 42 minutes nevertheless.......2005-09-07
Interesting. One and two stars, five stars...apparently this album really divides the Red Sea.
Well, if you hate country music and 50s rock n' roll you obviously aren't going to like this album very much. Sure, there are couple of blues covers and a good original ("No Way Pedro"), but the bulk of this album is made up of songs by men like Hank Williams, Otis Blackwell, and Dave Bartholomew.
Van Morrison duets with Jerry Lee Lewis' sister Linda...well, it actually sounds more like she is singing harmony vocals half the time, but she plays some terrific, rollicking piano not unlike her brother's.
Will you like this album? Well, this is not a typical Van Morrison album, obviously. He doesn't usually cover three Hank Williams-songs on one CD...doesn't usually cover Hank Williams at all, and nor does he do "Old Black Joe" or "Crazy Arms".
These are NOT soulful rhythm & blues-renditions of those songs either; this is country & western and ol' time rock n' roll, everything in the spirit of Jerry Lee Lewis. Even "Boogie Chillen" and "Think Twice Before You Go" is played a la Jerry Lee rather than John Lee Hooker, and while Morrison is in fine form vocally, a lot of devoted fans will probably disapprove of him doing such a "lightweight" record.
Me, I love Van Morrison's music, but I don't need him to record a new "Moondance" every time, and I enjoy this fun meat-and-potatoes album. How can you not enjoy a swinging piano-driven slice of proto-rock n' roll like "Real Gone Lover"?
It sounds like Morrison and Lewis are having the time of their lives pounding out 13 songs they love, R&B, blues, country, and rock & roll in between each other. And everything sounds like it was played by a tough little bar band on a Saturday night, easy and unforced.
"You Win Again" is a fun little roots record; it's not great art, but it's not a self-conscious "tribute album" either, it's just good fun.
3 3/4 stars. Lighten up!
you win again.......2003-12-07
The duets here (only from the sound bites) sound as if 2 singers are singing the songs at the same time. The voices don't blend well together. Linda Gail Lewis doesn't hold her twanging in check and does'nt harmonize well with Morrison (who sounds as wonderful as usual). It is hard to have 2 singers singing lead at the same time.

A smooth ride........2005-09-03
You cannot review this cd without mentioning that the lead singer sounds eerily like Stephen Merritt (Magnetic Fields, the Sixths, etc.). However, these tunes are very pleasing to these ears. The lyrics are not as self-depreciating as Merritt, and most of the songs are not about love, and love lost. However, that detached forlorn voice is there. I like Magnetic Fields, and I like this. FYI; this is much better than Chelsea 27099 (the previos release) which is very average. If you like Magnetic Fields; you will like this.

Great music, but B3 are not very popular in der US until now.......2002-07-26
The three New Yorker boys are not very popular in the Usa until now. I hope it will change later. They've covert the Beegees, but they have done very good. You win again was the second singel in Germany after Nightfever and listening to this record is fun. In germany they are popular since one year and they concerts are very good. Because they are singing life and they choreographie is good. I hope they become a little more popular in the future. They are very good...

Truly Talented, Terribly Tragic.......2005-09-11
A triple treat if ever there was one. Jason had the beautiful, emotive, yet masculine, voice destined to put all other crooners to shame; the beefcake, yet sultry looks that many pump or surgically strive for; the great roles on Broadway that can only come to real talent. Seemed he had everything going for him. Why the album that is mentioned on the back of this disc didn't materialize, is one of those shames of the recording industry. Why he felt it necessary to take his life at 28 is one of those tragic secrets that only he, and God, can know.
His performance on "The Lion King" cast album, and appearance on The Rosie O'Donnell Show captivated me beyond choice. With all of the useless, banal, semi-talents that clog the entertainment world, he should have risen to the top & superceded all of them.
The Gibb brothers' "You Win Again" & Desmond Child's "I'd Be Lying" are admittedly of the 'boy-band' feel, yet with enough spine & grit to ensure that they should have been hits. Why Universal didn't get behind & promote these borders on criminal.
IT'S A HIT!!! with a little help from the Gibb Brothers!.......2000-08-14
Jason's second release is an instant hit. This collaboration of writer/producer/artist can't go wrong! The song is instantly addictive, I absolutely love and recommend it! For other selections which Jason appears on check out The Lion King Original Broadway Cast Recording & The Paul Simon album. Jason's smooth, sexy voice will melt you! Can't wait for the release of NYC.
I LOVE HIM.......2000-07-16
He is so cool I saw him on Broadway in The Lion King 6 times! He is so neat!I LOVE HIM!
When does the album come out?.......2000-07-14
I loved the Disney Special with him and Jessica Simpson. Does anyone know when the album comes out? I loved all of the songs. My favorite is You Win Again. I can't wait until the CD comes out.
