5 out of 5 stars Tough to categorize but..........2007-06-06

still amazing.

This is the canadian "rapper's" third studio release, and he increasingly becomes better with each release. On this trip, the entire album has a feel, whether its the somber "Highway Seven" or the rock-laden "Born To Run". With some much intersection of genres including hip-hop, rock, reggae, and jazz, it's sometimes difficult to pinpoint what exactly you're listening to. K-os does it all, and does it all well. From rapping on the album's opener "Electrik Heat" to crooning on the album's highlight (for me at least) "Highway Seven", he has proven he can hold his own and more in just about any form. This is a highly recommended cd for any fan of...MUSIC. If you like music at all, you should at least listen to this album. Some tracks might not be for you, but you never know until you try. With so much diversity, there's something for everyone on here. 5 stars out of 5, and if you haven't heard his previous releases, especially "Joyful Rebellion", be sure to check those out as well. You won't regret buying this cd from K-os.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting style.......2007-04-03

It reminds me of reggae style beach music. I like it a lot but you need to be in a certain mood to listen to it. Great for long road trips. It put my boyfriend in "stealth mode" as he called it - he was able to concentrate on driving while stil enjoying the K-Os.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite For 07' (So Far).......2007-03-29

I know it's still early in the year but this can easily be my favorite for the year. If you want straight hip hop you might want to look elsewhere but if you enjoy some experimenting of styles and flavor this is the album for you.Overall vibe is very nice on this album because it plays all the way through smoothly. I look forward for more great songs from this guy.

5 out of 5 stars Good start for 2007.......2007-02-27

I have been a K-Os fan since exit, and every album this man, puts out gets better, and better everytime, joyfull rebellon ws genius, now this one Atlantis, is just a masterpiece, i really can't call this Hip Hop album, becuase he ranges from pop, rock, soul, and much more, a lot of emccee from the U.S, can trully learn from this man, and the biggest plus for me is he does not curse, or use th n bomb, so anybody who is ready for a change and wanna hear something besides, the crap you here on the radio, pick up atlantis you will not be disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Another fantastic album.......2007-02-22

K-os continues to define his style without the confines of "traditional" (as the mainstream populace have come to accept) hip-hop. His fusion of styles and genres is a little less unique since the Black Eyed Peas' Monkey Business album (which seemed to bring this funky, peppy style into the limelight) but k-os manages to exceed at the style where BEP simply made it popular.

I consider my taste in music "left of the mainstream". I love me some pop, rock, alternative, dance, you name it. I prefer to shy away from super-popular artists because I see the contrivance inherent within those songs. K-os has a realness to his music that transcends genre and is just recognizable as "good". I just bought this album yesterday, and have had a few listens through. I can tell that I will enjoy this more than Joyful Rebellion. Considering the explanation of my tastes, this should be easy to accept. I will admit that his personal emcee talents are better shown through his previous efforts (find his first album if you want the best example) but this album is far more suited to my tastes. At this time it is hard to say which songs are better than the rest because they really all sound fantastic. If albums like this are what 2007 have to offer, I am going to LOVE 2007.

Why David Arkenstone isn't a top line film composer is a mystery. His music has a cinematic orchestral sweep that seems destined for Hollywood epics. Yet, except for some small films, the silver screen has eluded Arkenstone, so he works out his cinematic ambitions on his albums. A gifted multi-instrumentalist with a wide orbit of influences, Arkenstone has a fondness for the grandiose statement and the sentimental mood. They are present in abundance on Atlantis, his paean to the mythical lost continent. His touchstones range from Coplandesque exuberance to Cecil B. DeMille biblical epics, complete with faux Middle Eastern melodies and rhythms. There are some nice touches, including some Adiemus-like chorales courtesy of Adiemus singer, Miriam Stockley. But Arkenstone's romantic arrangements swamp his compositions like the Red Sea closing on the Egyptians. Most Hollywood soundtracks are full of tried and true emotional strategies. Arkenstone utilizes them all on Atlantis--the only problem is, he doesn't have a film. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars different.......2006-09-30

I've had this since it was released and although I don't listen to it all the time like I did when I first got it I still kind of like it. Now, I have a taste for classical music(baroque and classical periods), just so you know where I'm comin' from. This is new age, classical crossover. Don't get this if you're expecting something deep or orthodox. I found this music is best for dreaming.

What I really like about this is it's original sound. Everything just sounds so exotic it's kind of neat. To me this kind of sounds like videogame music(sounds almost like stuff composed by Yasunori Mitsuda or Nobueo Uematsu), I don't think it's complex or orthodox enough to be considered movie music.

This album is fairly short and the pieces arn't that long, so don't expect a packed full CD. If you're looking for something very different try this album out, I think you will like it.

5 out of 5 stars you can see the boats.......2006-07-22

I like this CD so much, when my first one developed a minor glitch I didn't even wait to see if it just had dust on it, I went right out and got a new one. I can't bear to have it skip any notes.

I write to this music; sometimes I put it on just before I go to bed so I'll have neat dreams. If you allow it to, this music can conjure up white-stone palaces, people in flowing white robes, and a myriad of ancient seascapes. It takes me to an exotic bazaar where they sell goods nobody knows about today; the streets are thick with people from every corner, the air full of dead languages.

This is my favourite of David Arkenstone's efforts, so evocative of a time and place that he must have been there once. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars CD Review - David Arkenstone's "Atlantis: A Symphonic Journey".......2006-07-14

I'm really glad I purchased this, it's something I've been wanting for some while. I love Arkenstone's work, and I am a fanatic of the "myth" of Atlantis. When I found out he had created Atlantis-inspired music, I was compelled to get this CD, and I am very pleased with it.

5 out of 5 stars Do Not Miss One.......2006-07-03

This is his absolute best. Every song on the CD is better than the one before it. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-03-19

This is an enjoyable CD to work to rather than relax to, as some of the songs are more upbeat and exciting. It evokes an image of Ancient Greece to me...

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Atlantis soundtrack.......2007-01-19

Another great soundtrack. Now I need to purchase the DVDs. Thank you very much.

5 out of 5 stars Joel Goldsmith is the master of the Sci-Fi music genre!.......2006-08-10

I've been a huge fan of "Atlantis" since the show began back in 2004. I was particularly excited when the first strains of "O'Neill Inbound" began during the pilot episode, and the same excitement for the show and it's gorgeous music has continued all the way though the third season. When I first saw that "Stargate: Atlantis" music was being put out on CD, I nearly freaked out. I immediately purchased the CD, and, when it arrived, it was immediately put into my CD player--and my iPod--and it hasn't been removed since! This CD is definitely worth having, putting in your CD player, and pushing "repeat." Joel Goldsmith's talent for music shines through every note, from the soft tones of "Messages," to the Athosian's theme in "Teyla's Village," to the creepy/exciting Wraith themes in "Wraith Abductions," "Wraith Lair," and "Dart Battle." And, of course, the "Main Title" was nominated for an Emmy! This is one of the best CD's on the market in my opinion, and Joel Goldsmith deserves a hundred kudos for another job well done!

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL!!!!.......2006-02-05

This is a totally enjoyable soundtrack album. Joel Goldsmith does a wonderful job and in my opinion ranks right up there close to the master of soundtrack composers- John Williams! You won't be disappointed especially if you are a fan of the show.

4 out of 5 stars YES!.......2006-01-09

Joel Goldsmith's brilliant score finally comes to CD. An ethereal compilation with gorgeous choir arrangements that cover season one (and esp. the pilot).

The CD of course has the Emmy-nominated opening theme. Which is ever so slightly different from the TV version. Seems slightly more percussive.

With their third offering, Trinity, the Austro-American sextet takes Symphonic Metal to a new level as majestically powerful Metal songs complete with heavy guitars and unrelenting drumming meet emotional ballads and romantic soundscapes. The distinctive epic string arrangements compliment the multi-faceted compositions, superbly crowned by fantastic soprano vocals and the equally strong singing talents of the male counterpart. By masterfully merging their classic roots with powerful modern elements, Visions Of Atlantis deliver an album that is not only mystic and heavy but also insightful and bombastic.

2 out of 5 stars Some good Bond themes.......2007-01-10

This is not a good CD for those of you who want the James Bond theme music incorporated a lot. There are some songs which it appears in, like Bond 77, but otherwise, it's just a lot of other 70s music. Too bad, John Barry incorporates good Bond music, but this is not one of the Best Bond soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewed by a Bond Collector.......2006-03-15

This soundtrack is perfect for the consumate Bond fan. The cd contains most of the music from the film and is great purchase for anyone who loves the movie. Each track will immediately bring to mind the scene from the movie. I would buy it again.

5 out of 5 stars James Bond and Disco collide with full force!.......2005-06-15

For the most part, I feel that the Bond film scores all sound very similar. This is one that REALLY stands out to me.

    1. -Nobody Does It Better- This is by far one of the best Bond songs ever recorded, and we are given the full cut of the song, not the partial cut that I have heard elsewhere.

    2. -Bond 77- This is a 4:22 compilation of all the Disco-Bond themes throughout the film. It has great solos, and the Disco beat, though I'm not a big fan of Disco, this is an exciting track that defines Roger Moore's Bond in the film.

    3. -Ride To Atlantis- This is a very tranquill and relaxing piece with lots of strings, guitars, and synthesizers. It is beautiful and gives the impression of being underwater.

    4. -Mojave Club- This is a very interesting track. It has lots of drums and has an extremely African sound. It can get obnoxious after repeat listenings, but all in all, it is not too long and is worth a listen.

    5. -Nobody Does It Beter (Instrumental)- This is, by far, the most beautiful track on the CD. It has beautiful solos by Marvin Hamlisch on piano, Laurence Juber on lead guitar, and Derick Plater.

    6. -Anya- Although the track never actually appeared in the film, it is a beautiful serenade that stays appealing even after repeated listening.

7-10. -The Pyramids, Eastern Lights, Conclusion- These tracks are all connected and represent a compilation of the finale music from the film. 7 builds suspense with lots of brass and leads into 8. 8 consists of a disco/funk/African sound that is very neat sounding. 9 is mostly done by strings and a chorus. Over all, these tracks only add up to a total of 7:58.

    11. -End Titles- This track consists of parts of tracks 1 and 5.

All in all, this is an incredible soundtrack, though I wish more could have been included. But as this was first released on a vinyl LP, the 36 minute total running time makes sense. This is an incredible album and the price is perfect. A GREAT BUY!!!

3 out of 5 stars Favorite Soundtrack, Disappointing "Remaster".......2005-03-29

After checking out the new editions of other James Bond soundtracks, I was anxiously awaiting the full "Remastered Version" of THE SPY WHO LOVED ME.
    And found myself disappointed.

Where the other soundtracks were not only remastered but filled out to include most of the music (doubling the tracks), SPY's new edition is simply the same exact tracks from the original 1977 album.

I'm giving it three stars because it's one of my favorite 007 soundtracks...but I felt like giving it one since I'd wanted the full treatment similar to what ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE or FOR YOUR EYES ONLY got.

    5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2004-10-23

Although there is much music missing on this soundtrack, it is still a great soundtrack to listen to. And yes, you can say that it is "so seventies", but: That's whats fun about this soundtrack.
It has great sounds on it that give you the feeling of the movie. My personal favorite is "Bond 77"
Also the title song, "Nobody does it better" is one of the best title songs in the Bond history.
The soundtrack also includes music that wasn't used in the film. The track "Anya" was never used in the movie, but it has beautiful music that really touches my heart.
If you liked the feeling you got from the movie because of the music, this is a soundtrack for you.
But you have to listen to it yourself and make your own opinion. But I think it has some of the greatest music in the entire Bond series. Nobody does it better ;)

One of the key but underappreciated episodes in avant-garde jazz, Sun Ra's Atlantis sounds far out even today. Rather than a full-on assault on the senses, Atlantis is an exercise in build-up, with long, almost forlorn passages of Ra on electric keyboards setting a vast echo chamber for his Arkestra to spring forth within. Captured during one of the most adventurous periods for Sun Ra, *Atlantis* features the orchestral perfection of the best big bands of the century-and then proceeds towards mutirhythmic explosions of intensity, all of it couched in Sun Ra's mixture of interglactic mysticism and heaping doses of experiments in tone, tempo, and texture. --Andrew Bartlett

...I think alot of people give this album too much credit. Sometimes you cannot heap lavish praise upon something simply because it is different, and breaks the mold of preconcieved notions formerly held of any particular genre. At this, Sun Ra excells brilliantly, rewriting what could be recorded for a jazz label at an early historical date like no one who has come before or since. That however does not merit placing this album up on a pedestal, for we must detatch the significance the album played in the evolution of avant garde jazz from the actual contents of the disc. For the most part I find the playing on this disc to be extremely over-indulgent and pretentious. Yes, there are some facinating moments where everything clicks, particularly when the creative use of perrcussion is employed to organize so much of that sloppy noise that Ra was putting out. The production is also extremely low quality and I feel that this does nothing to compliment the material. Basically, aside from a few hints that clue in the listener as to the pedigree of musicians being recorded, this could almost be passed over as a bunch of college jazz stoners in their garage improvising tributes to the Coltrane Interstellar Space free-jazz era meterial.

5 out of 5 stars One of Sun Ra's finest albums.......2005-08-14

You think Pink Floyd is trippy and out there? Roger Waters and David Gilmour bow down to the great Sun Ra. That being said, Pink Floyd fans and stoners (often times one category) will love Sun Ra. In an age where Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane were criticized for straying way too far away from Jazz's orgins, Sun Ra was already leaps and bounds ahead of them. Sun Ra is the apex of Avant-Garde and Experimental Jazz. To the untrained ear of those unfamiliar with Ra, this may sound uneven and sloppily composed. But you couldn't be anymore wrong. That's the genius of avant-garde art - it may seem poorly conceived on the surface, but underneath its thought out and pays close attention to details. This is one of Sun Ra's best albums, and a good place to go from after "Space Is the Place" or "Easy Listening For Intergalatic Travel" (the two starting points in your Ra enjoyment). The lack of production, minimalist and at times primative organ playing, and the very small band add to an atmosphere of the outer limits that any Space Age Pop artist couldn't dream to create. In other words, classic Ra. Not the greatest starting place to get acquainted with the genius, but a classic nonetheless.

3 out of 5 stars Overated but good.......2004-06-07

Certainly there is some very good music on this album, but I've always thought this album was overated. The shorter pieces suffer from a lack of cohesiveness and ramble on a bit in a laid back, offhand way. They don't really go anywhere. The long centerpiece composition "Atlantis" is for the most part an organ workout for Ra and is by turns extremely aggressive, spacey and ultimately exhausting. There are some great passages but its just too long. I would recommend "The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra Vol. 1", or the truly magical "Magic City" or "Other Planes of There" before Atlantis. Those albums all contain long compositions that are more rewarding. Heliocentric Worlds is comprised of smaller pieces that flow into one another creating in effect one long suite. I'm not saying Atlantis isn't worth having because it is, just that there are better Sun Ra albums out there that you might want to pick up first.

    4 out of 5 stars Mind-expanding, but This-worldly........2004-02-13

This album surely breaks the traditional molds of rhythm, form and tonality. For these reasons alone it is really worth a listen; however, this is not earth-shattering or out-of-this-world music. Free jazz had been around for about 6 years, and so this experiment had been done before. It is a great recording because the listener hears it against the backdrop of one's own preconceived ideas about how music should be. If I were to describe it, I would call it "Music from a Laudromat", because it harkens (especially rhythmically) to my experience sitting in a laudromat waiting for the clothes to get done in a dryer. As the dryer spins at a constant speed the clothes inside rattle against the sides of the dryer cylinder, snaps buttons and zippers clanging against the sides at an erratic non-linear pace. If one listens to it and places one's attention upon it, it becomes a very meditative and freeing experience.

5 out of 5 stars Personal reflections on Ra.......2003-01-19

This was my first introduction to the Might of Ra. I wasn't quite sure what to make of it other than I liekd it. A few months later, I saw the Arkestra live and it all suddenly made sense. I was hooked and hooked deeply! No, this isn't the best starting place for Sun Ra (especially if you're coming from a 'traditional' jazz background) but for the adventuresome and openminded, this is great stuff.....SPACE IS THE PLACE

      5 out of 5 stars Almighty...Let's Hear Vol. 6.......2007-04-07

Almighty Records produces the BEST Euro-Dance music! Almost all of their remixed tracks contain strong vocals with an awesome masterbeat. I really love listening to this album! But, if you're a frequent club kid who is looking for the next new hotness, then you should stay away from buying this and any other album produced by various artists.

      5 out of 5 stars great workout.......2007-01-10

I'm a U.S.Marine who is a fitness instructor, when on leave, at a local gym/health club. I use this and others from this series to teach boot camp & spinning. This CD was one of the best yet!
