It's a Mystery

A significant segment of the CD-buying public probably thinks of Bob Seger as the TV pitchman for those "like a rock" Chevy pickups. The problem is a little something rubbed off Seger in the process. And now he wants it back. Is that what Seger is referring to when, in "Lock and Load," he complains of "users and fakers" who've caught him in their "schemes"? He now confesses he's "spent years losin' touch of what's right and what's real." Thus it's time to "take a different road and start again." Not so quick, Bob. It is, after all, easier for a 4x4 to pass through the eye of a needle than for a multiplatinum rocker to recapture his erstwhile ideals. Seger fails, of course, but this is a noble try. Here he aims for grittier production here than fans have heard of late, but he remains a meat and potatoes rocker, unwilling to make the occasional stylistic leap contemporaries Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young rely upon to stay fresh. It's a Mystery sounds like a Bob Seger album...nothing more or less. --Steven Stolder

Not content with the simplistic "crossover" formula, superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli has been pursuing alternative paths since he emerged as a vocal phenomenon in the mid-1990s: operatic classics and contemporary popular song. The singer's last few albums have showcased his love for the former (including homages to his beloved Verdi: the Requiem and Verdi aria collection). But Cieli di Toscana ("Tuscan Skies") marks a triumphant return to the pop idiom last explored on Sogno, offering a highly varied series of the kind of beautifully crafted contemporary melodies that initially won Bocelli acclaim.
The familiar cast of songwriter-collaborators (including Francesco Sartori, responsible for the smash success "Time to Say Goodbye") mixes with new blood; Bocelli himself unveils his songwriting talents on "Il Diavolo e l'Angelo." It's a highly produced affair, but behind all the gloss, Bocelli sings with a newfound, relaxed, even mellow quality. There are intimately touching moments--"L'Incontro," a tribute to his first son featuring Bocelli's own poetry as read by U2's Bono--as well as soaring flights of lyricism (the duet "L'Abitudine" with Italian singer Helena). And on "Mascagni," with its quotes from that composer's operas, Bocelli makes another nod to his classical affinities. But whatever the style, Bocelli is a singer who knows how to go straight to his listeners' hearts. --Sarah Chin
Album Description
Exclusive UK version of Bocelli's third pop release includes the exclusive bonus track 'Tornera La Neve' and CD-ROM. The album also features 'L'Incontro' a duet with Gerard Depardieu. David Foster co-composes some of the tracks on this album as well. 2001.

Just what it says. See my other Andrea Bocelli reviews to get the idea I really like this guy.
Emotional therapy!.......2007-05-14
"He is all heart; there's no pretense. You can feel it." No kidding. These were my mom's last comments about Bocelli two months before she left earthly existence.
This album helped me process a lot of emotional residue affiliated with the strain of difficult dynamics between my mom and myself.
Don't get me wrong. The music isn't sad; it's pure heart and emotion, so it may evoke emotions. The last cut, "L'Ultimo Re" is gorgeous with the way his voice soars!

Great music!.......2006-12-18
I bought the album before listening to any of the songs, because i'm a Bocelli fan. I was not disappointed. Wonderful melodies, beautiful voice. My personal favourites are Melodramma, Chiara and Resta Qui, but this is a great cd overall.
Cieli di Toscana.......2006-08-25
There is no other voice quite like Andrea's voice. I keep listening to this CD over and over as some of the songs just touch my heart, both with his voice and the written arrangements. One of my very favorites from Andrea. He has the same qualities to his voice with popular songs as he does with opera. When following the English translations in the CD case, the message of each song becomes very clear through the inflections and tonal quality of his voice.
LOVE IT!!!!.......2006-08-25

Customer Reviews:
This Could Not Have Been Bob Seger.......2006-12-31
This review is about 12 years late. Yes, that's what I said, 12 years late. The reason being is I didn't have a computer 12 years ago, and even if I did I wouldn't have known that Amazon had such a forum for music lovers to enter a review of an album.
With that said, I am a Bob Seger fan from the beginning. You could always count on one thing when it came to Bob. When he brought out an album, you knew it would be great. Until this one. I remember bringing it home and listening and listening to it to see if it would grow on me. Now, I'm one of those people, that when I listen to new songs, the great or even good ones will pop out at me right from the first listening. With this one, I kept hoping that something would catch my ear. Here and there I heard Bob Seger. But 95% of it, I didn't hear anything remotely close to Bob Seger. This was probably the most disappointed I had ever been in hearing an artist that I love doing his new "music?".
I held onto it for about a year, never playing it. Then I decided, with part of me feeling that I was selling Bob out, to sell it to a store that re-sold used CD's. I needed money to build a collection of someone else that I loved. Before I sold it my thoughts were "It's a mystery what Bob Seger was attempting to do and say with this album. All I knew was that it wasn't the Bob Seger I knew. And I'm one of those fans that's not upset when my favorites try something new. This, for the most part was pure junk. And, it still hurts for me to say that.
Then, years went slowly past.(Don't sue me Bob, for stealing your line). Twelve to be exact. And, every once in awile I'd wander, what ever happened to Bob Seger? Where's he at, and what's he doing? No one was talking about him. Hope the heck not, but did he die and I just hadn't heard? Then, came the news of "Face The Promise".My first thoughts were that thinking the worst these past 12 years wasn't true. And, after hearing the first single, I said "Bob Seger is back!" But, I still didn't know where he was. I saw him on all the nighttime talk shows, but still no-one asked him whwere he'd been. Then, I was lucky to see him on The View, the morning show(God, bless you, it was before Rosie(I have to be the center of attention)O'Donnell was the host. Joy Bahar asked Bob, "But, Bob, where've you been? Bob said that he and his wife decided to have children. And, he thought"Hey, I've been on the road all these years and I've heard all the stories from other singers that the biggest regret they had was that they were never home to see their children grow up, take that first step, etc.". I thought to myself, isn't that great. Here's a guy who I always felt was like most of us common guys, and he is.
Since then, I've thought about "It's A Mystery". I don't know if I'm on top of this, but this is what I think. When Bob made this album he had other things on his mind(settling down with his future family), and just didn't have his heart in the music. Because, as I said earlier, this just wasn't Bob Seger to any degree. So, if there are any Seger fans who wrote him off, sort of, like I did with "It's A Mystery", go out and buy "Face The Promise". Bob Seger is back! I'm going to sound a little two-faced, but maybe someday, I'll buy "It's A Mystery" again(used mind you), just to say to myself " Well, I have everything Bob released". That's the only reason. Thanks for indulging in my 12 year late story.
A Righteous Rocker Plows On Through The 90s In Style.......2006-04-01
With IT'S A MYSTERY, Bob Seger continues the good fight for traditional rock & roll values in the face of musical trends (grunge, punk, etc.) coming and going. On "Lock And Load", Seger speaks of the need to make amends for past shortcomings, a theme present on many episodes of TV's THE GHOST WHISPERER. Other songs take aim at the darker side of human nature, including "Manhattan", which is about a drug deal (or some other kind of pact) gone severely wrong; the lyrics of that song have inspired me to hang up pictures of pretty celebrities on my wall as a deterrent to getting myself into a bad situation that I might be unable to get out of later. Seger's support of sanctions on Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up May 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
Not true Bob, but not bad.......2004-12-13
I think "Seger fails, but this is a noble attempt" is a concise (if somewhat harsh) way to describe this CD. After the unified, down-home feeling of "The Fire Inside," Seger seems to be at a loss with this album. He tries to go everywhere musically and ends up going almost nowhere. I say "almost" because this album does have its moments. "Rite of Passage" and "It's a Mystery" are both hard-rocking (if musically uninspired) tunes, and "Revisionism Street" is a lyrically brilliant summary of the politics of entertainment. "I Can't Save You Angelene" is a wonderfully bluesy farewell to the one who's not worth pursuing--different and intriguing content for Seger. "Manhattan" pushes the envelope too; once you get past the initial quirkiness of Seger's singing style on this song (he sing-speaks it a la Shawn Mullins), it proves itself a powerful tale of a drug deal gone horribly wrong for both parties--"two more unsolved mysteries," as Seger notes. Beyond those songs, I didn't find much on this album that stood out. As other reviewers have noted, however, that doesn't mean the rest of the album isn't decent music, since it is Bob Seger... not the unparalleled Bob Seger of "Night Moves" and "Stranger in Town" and "Nine Tonight," but Bob Seger nonetheless. This is a good one to buy for posterity if you can find it at a bargain price.
Rock and Roll with Heart and Mind.......2004-07-17
This is the first Seger album I've heard, and I love it. In fact, it's my faorite rock album. It's a rush to hear the lyrics of "Lock and Load," "Put Your Hands in the Air," and especially "Revisionism Street" -- I haven't heard anything so clearly poitical in decades; the messages needs to be said and heard. Seger's voice is amazing; I love the roughness and admire his control. The music is great; it's impossible to sit still when it's on. I don't know what the critics of this album are missing; I'm hearing it and judging it on its own merits, and I think it's excellent.

the mystery of edwin drood.......2005-12-22
I am interested in buying this cd, but not for 249.99. That is an outrageous price for a cd. If the list is incorrect, please let me know.
Terrific Score from Rupert "Escape" Holmes.......2005-06-25
Rupert Holmes (famous for his #1 hit "Escape") does an excellent job with his first theatrical score, the Tony-winner "Mystery Of Edwin Drood". The show, based on the unfinished book by Charles Dickens, is basically a whodunit, with multiple endings based on each audience's preferences. The cast, headed by Betty Buckley, George Rose, Cleo Laine and Howard McGillin, is terrific. The score is fast-moving & fun!
Best tracks include:
There You Are [the terrific opening number]
A Man Could Go Quite Mad
Two Kingsmen
Moonfall
The Wages Of Sin
Both Side Of A Coin
Don't Quit While You're Ahead
Finale: The Writing On The Wall
This score may not be filled with theatrical standards, but the songs are generally excellent & merit repeat listenings.
an amazing musical.......2004-07-20
An amazingly underrated musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood is guarenteed to delight the listener.
Currently, I have the honor of potraying The Chairman in a Summerstock program, and its an amazing experence. The book and music are spellbinding, and hilarious. "There You Are", and "Off To The Races" are wonderful, energetic, and in-your-face group numbers. Jasper's confession and "Man Could Go Quite Mad" send chills down your spine, but cant hold a candle to the eerie "The Name of Love/Moonfall", which Jasper sings with the beautiful Rosa Bud. Puffer's "The Wages of Sin" is excellent, even without the sexual humor in the middle (see the show). Bazzard's "Never the Luck" is not only a good audition song for a high baritone/tenor, but its an anthem to down on your luck actors everywhere!
I reccomend this to all fans of great musical theatre
I LOVE DROOD!!!!!!!!!.......2003-11-19
I recently went to our college's production of "Drood" (3 out of 4 nights) and I was amazed!!! I loved every song and couldn't get them out of my head. I was telling my grandma about the musical when to my surprise she told me that she had this CD. She let me borrow it and I have not been able to take it out of my CD player!! I highly recommend "Drood" to everyone!!!
So much fun in 2-3 hours.......2003-09-07
I had the priviledge of performing this musical my senior year of high school (I graduated May 2003) and I had the wonderful, yet exhausting and difficult, opportunity to play Edwin Drood. This musical is so much fun to perform and you can't keep the music out of your head- even if you wanted to. Betty Buckley is FABULOUS as is...everyone in this show. Seriously. And for girls needing an audition song, "Moonfall" is a gorgeous choice for a good soprano. Lovely lovely lovely. It's just a great show with a variety of songs that are all fun and wonderful. Love it! :o)

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Moved to tears.......2004-03-18
Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27
John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended
harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Cieli Di Toscana.......2001-11-06
The music on this CD is a gift to the senses and to the soul. The dynamics of Andrea Bocelli's voice have developed and become more devastatingly beautiful than ever. He uses his incredible gift with sensational mobility and versatility to transform songs into masterful works of art.
This music is different in many ways when compared to earlier releases. In "Chiara", his voice is more stirring and more sensual than ever. With "Il Diavolo E L'Angelo", he shifts into high gear with a new and intense vitality and rhythm that caught me (and my family) by complete surprise. He demonstrates unique power to reach from the softest tones into the loftiest notes.
Before I received this CD as a gift, I wondered if Andrea Bocelli could really succeed in impressing me again as dramatically as he did with Romanza and Sogno. Now I know...and the answer has left me breathless and spellbound all over again.

They don't write music like this anymore.......2006-12-31
Who cares if a soprano is singing songs written for a tenor or Thine Alone was written as a duet? This is a perfectly lovely album, and I've never heard my two favorites--Thine Alone, Toyland--sung more beautifully. The soprano, Virginia Croskery, takes no liberties with the music--sings it lovingly and as it was written. Refreshing in our self-indulgent times when singers seem to think it compulsory to "make a song their own" or whatever it is they think they're doing.
an elegant and sensitive treatment of classic favorites!.......2004-01-13
Totally enchanted with this CD. The soprano supremely gifted and the orchestra - stunning. I highly recommend it for the sensitive music lover!
He deserves better.......2000-02-29
This new Victor Herbert is a disaster. The soloist is bad and destroys Romany Life. Her other songs aren't much better. Most of the vocal music was written with a chorus in mind. No chorus. Over half the vocal selections are mutilated. 2/3rds of Kiss Me Again is gone, about 1/2 of Moonbeams cannot be found, the second verse of A Kiss in the Dark is among the missing, etc. Thine Alone was written as a duet. Molly was written for a tenor. They are sung by a soprano. Herbert wrote so much music beautiful music but onl;y his most famous can be found here. Three or four orchestral selections are all that can be recommended. Until John McGlinn or Richard Bonynge realize that Herbert once existed he is in trouble. Naxos and Brion are not the answer.
A valuable addition to recorded Americana.......2000-01-19
It is a Good Thing that Naxos is starting an American Classics series at their usual budget price and that Victor Herbert is featured on two of them. We have as of this writing the purely instrumental
(8.559025) and its sequel
(8.559026). The latter features soprano Virginia Croskery and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under Keith Brion. Yes, this offers an interesting comparison with the old Beverly Sills offering of much the same material. Ms. Croskery's vocalizing is very good indeed and perhaps more in keeping with the kind of voice for which much of this music was composed; but while Ms. Sills' voice is quite thrilling, it is perhaps a touch too operatic for this lightweight material. On the other hand, the Naxos sound is far beyond what the older set can give us. Of the 16 selections on this CD, 5 are instrumental. Of the vocals, not all were written for the soprano voice ("Toyland" for example); but most were and we have here what you would expect: "Romany Life," "Kiss in the Dark," "Italian Street Song," "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," and so on. Some listeners might have some trouble with the singer's very top notes; but at this price and for lack of anything competitive that is still available, this is still a very good purchase. This disc makes a fine companion piece, not only to the other Naxos set, but also to a concert of Herbert and Romberg duets on Newport Classic label titled "Sweethearts."
