Mad Dogs & Englishmen
Editorial Reviews

The rock & roll road show never really caught on, which is surprising given that Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen revue showed tour dogs how it's done. Recorded live at New York's Fillmore East in the spring of 1970, this CD (as well as a film of the same name) documents a slapdash extravaganza (the whole thing was conceived, organized, and abandoned over the course of two months) that overflows with big, brassy, rockin' soul. Front and center is Joe Cocker, a spastically charismatic Brit soul shouter. The bandleader is Leon Russell, playing some of the best rock piano ever waxed. And the crack company (boasting 21 singers and players) features the Rolling Stones' future horn section and Derek & the Dominoes' rhythm-section-in-waiting. Cocker shines on "Cry Me a River," "Give Peace a Chance," "The Letter," and a slew of other covers that benefit greatly from the volcanic arrangements whipped up by Russell and Chris Stainton. It may have been the Ray Charles revue for the Woodstock Generation, but, shockingly, the Genius himself hasn't made too many records that surpass this one. --Steven Stolder

Album Description
In the pantheon of classic live albums as well as concert films, Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen is near the top, alongside Woodstock and The Last Waltz in defining the spirit of a generation. The tour, album and film catapulted Cocker, Leon Russell, and Rita Coolidge to stardom. Now, for the first time, the album, originally issued in 1970, is heard with previously unreleased tracks and studio cuts. The two-CD Mad Dogs & Englishmen: 35th Anniversary Deluxe Edition reveals in full for the first time the repertoire of the craziest, loudest, longest rock 'n' roll circus to have ever hit America. Along with already-legendary performances of "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window," "The Letter," "Delta Lady," "Bird on a Wire," "Cry Me a River," "Feelin' Alright," "Let's Go Get Stoned," and "Space Captain" are seven previously unreleased live performances (whose inclusion now reflects the actual sequence of the show's set list) and four rare studio recordings.
The debuting live performances are of Cocker's "The Weight," "Something," "Darling Be Home Soon," and "With a Little Help from My Friends"; Leon Russell's "Hummingbird" and "Dixie Lullaby"; and Don Preston's "Further On up the Road." In addition, Claudia Lennear's performance of "Let It Be," a single B-side, makes its album premiere. That recording, as well as Rita Coolidge's "Superstar," were taped at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium; the other performances took place earlier at the Fillmore East. Added too are the studio singles sessions of Russell's "The Ballad of Mad Dogs & Englishmen," the previously unreleased "Warm-Up Jam" (including "Under My Thumb"); the album debut and stereo debut of the single B-side "Space Captain" as well as "The Letter."
The tour rolled across America, from Detroit to New York to California, from March to May 1970. With Cocker in his prime, driven by a phenomenal band; ringmaster Russell; three drummers; horn section; 10-strong choir; wives, lovers and children; film crew; roadies; and a black-and-white-spotted dog, the tour was one of the greatest and most colorful in history. Thirty-five years later, the excitement of Mad Dogs & Englishmen remains.

The Best Rock, Blues, and Gospel Recording Ever.......2007-07-15
A must have for serious collectors and anyone who loves rock and blues. Joe Cocker in his finest hour.
A True Band of Gypsies! .......2007-03-19
First, without a doubt this is one of the top ten live albums in history. Like other notable live discs that are a must (The Who Live at Leeds, James Brown Live at the Apollo, The Stones Get Yer Ya Ya's Out, Zep How the West Was Won..) Mad Dogs send that classic shiver of inspiration down your spine. The band is incredibly tight, with fantastic musicians, and passion. And of course Joe Cocker belts out every song with equal intensity and passion, yet he also shares the spot light with other members of the band. More than anything you get a sense that everyone involved can sense how special this touring gypsy company is, and it is very interesting to read in the booklet how quickly acrimony and ego led to an implosion of the Mad Dogs and one quirky Englishman. Very sad, and made me want to find out more behind the history. But again this is pure passionate music, and many of the songs here are the DEFINITIVE version any music lover must have. The remix and deluxe soungs really help flesh out the depth and passion of the concert, and especiall with the inclusion of With a Littl Help From My Friends...a whole troupe of friends indeed! Another great thing about the remix is that this disc sounds much warmer and full, and much louder! The older release was very stagnent and low volume mix. In short...GET IT! And play at maximum volume!
Get It!.......2007-01-12
This is definitely Joe Cocker's best CD. And this newly released, restored version of this tour sounds fresh and fabulous as ever!
A Superior Live Album.......2006-12-03
Normally I prefer studio albums over live ones, since the sound quality and performances are usually better. Mad Dogs and Englishmen is an exception though. This deluxe edition is infinitely preferable to the non-deluxe one, and I can hardly believe they left some of these songs out of the original release. The album captures the incredible energy generated by both the ecstatic crowd and the 20+ people onstage during the concert. The sound quality is extraordinarily good. Even amidst the wall of sound one can clearly distinguish each voice and instrument. Cocker sings with such a gritty passion that you would think it was the last thing he was ever going to sing. He is surely one of the greatest singers in the soul/rock/R&B genres, and his performance here is beyond any praise I could offer. Of course, the backing band is just as important as Cocker himself. Under the direction of the legendary Master of Space and Time, Leon Russell, the band, comprised of three drummers, a full choir, horn section, and assorted other players, cranks like no other. Russell's greatest strength as bandleader is his ability to drive the band into a seemingly unstoppable frenzy of intensity, and his inimitable piano style adds a quirky zing to many of the arrangements. The combination of all these elements propel the show into truly epic territory, well beyond what someone would expect from a bunch of R&B cover songs. Highlights on the album include a ridiculously awesome performance of Joe's signature "With a Little Help From My Friends," "Delta Lady," and "Space Captain," as well as Leon Russell's "Hummingbird." Cocker and Russell's duet on "Girl from the North Country" is extremely touching - the perfect way to close the show. This one is absolutely essential for Cocker fans, and anyone else who loves to hear a totally awesome band in all its glory.
absolutly fabulous trip back to timeless majical music!.......2006-03-22
I've always loved Joe Cocker and watching this dvd i swear i had a flashback to my youth when my band would cover him! wow, what a wonderfully creative artist he is. 5 stars just to see this old chestnut and sing along with him again! so unique joe was in his most comfortable way-free to fling himself physically into ANY song! nobody ever did that before or since. the arm flinging ect. is purely joe cocker. he is one of a kind!

Remembering The 70's .......2007-01-12
This album brings back alot of memories of my days in Syracuse after returning home from Vietnam. To think of all the artist on the CD are now 35 plus years older, and Joe, Leon, Rita are still out there making music.I still rate this as one of my all time favorites.
A Timeless Rockola album.......2006-12-04
I remember seeing MD&E when it was first in the movie theaters. I became a fan of Cocker from his Woodstock appearance. Growing up in Memphis, I know Blues, I know R&B, and I have to admit a Brit Blues singer does not sound quite right. BUT Cocker is tuly a Blues talent.
The buyer of this CD should be prepared to become a fan of Cocker, But it is just as much a Leon Russell CD with all the arrangement and leading the troupe as the bandleader. In fact Russell in my opinion overshadowed Cocker. Many of the musicians (sans Cocker) are also on Leon Russell and the shelter people. In fact the CD over whelams Cocker with too tight production and showcases Russell musical talent.
Why get this CD? Well for one each song is strong (all killers with no fillers). whether a singer and a piano/organ or a band of 30 something peformers...it is still a great CD from song to song. Who ever listens to all of Woodstock or all of Bangladesh, because you listen to specific songs on both concert LP's. BUT with MD&E, you will listen to all of the songs.
Keep in mind this was all recorded at Fillmore East and the Movie was a road show. In a way both are different creative projects.
The Mad Dogs, The Englishmen and Joe Cocker........2006-05-22
This is the soundtrack to the documentary "Joe Cocker: Mad Dogs & Englishmen". While the film featured performances from several different venues, the album exclusively features songs played at the Fillmore East. The performances are excellent, with Joe doing his "British Ray Charles" thing, and the band (led by Leon Russell) really cooking. Great concert, I wish I could have been there, but I was just short of three years old at the time.
So Mad & So Wonderful !!!.......2006-04-29
One damn fine live album, really gets you moving! I practically lived in this movie when it was released in the 70's, got the album (which I still have), and now will definitely get the CD.
Joe Cocker was always a true rocker! Who can forget, "Let's Go Get Stoned"??!!! I did not appreciate the bluesy style then as much as I do today, after really getting into the old style blues during the past few years, and have to say that the Brits had it going on! Leon Russell adds his southern charm to a few great numbers here,"Delta Lady" being the most popular perhaps. Anyone who would like to hear what rock music concerts used to be like when they were raw and powerful, with unbelievable background vocals, should hear this album.

Sir Noel Coward is KING!.......2007-01-09
Very few of us lesser mortals can compete with the genius of Noel Coward, however we certainly can enjoy it! A master of lyric, pun, innendo, and rhyme, Noel will keep all laughing throughout this collection.
Caberet at its Best.......2006-07-11
This is a live recording of a Noel Coward performance in the 1950's at the Desert Inn. The songs are quite a bit racier than his usual studio recordings from the 1920's and 30's; all very witty and very fun. A stand out performance of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" features references to everyone from Somerset Maugham to Senator Joe McCarthy. Unique.
witty, classic genius.......2005-12-13
My old LP was lost in a recent move! I have loved this album along with "Noel and Gertie" since I first heard it at the age of twelve. Sir Noel Coward is not to be missed.

Album Description
Mad Dogs & Okies is a one-of-a-kind, country, rock, and blues recording project that brings into sharp focus the distinctive talents of artists that are either from Oklahoma or have been major contributors to--or have been profoundly influenced by--Oklahoma music. The musical vision of Jamie Oldaker--one of the world's most respected drummers and producers--Mad Dogs & Okies is a consistently awe-inspiring recording that spotlights an incredible, all-star cast of country, rock, and blues greats (artists with whom Jamie has worked over the years): Eric Clapton, Vince Gill, Taj Mahal, Willis Alan Ramsey, Tony Joe White, Bonnie Bramlett, Peter Frampton, Ray Benson, JJ Cale, Willie Nelson, and others.
Customer Reviews:
Grab this CD---excellent music and highly underrated.......2007-07-03
You've got musicians banding together from everywhere with one person in common, Oklahoma sideman Jamie Oldaker. There are two Oklahomans besides him, JJ Cale and Vince Gill. But you've also got Peter Frampton, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson and a whole passel of other folks singing and playing on this collection. What's the music about? Oklahoma, mostly--but the theme is for the most part, very upbeat.
It's hard to pick a standout from this CD. Probably my favorite is "Positively" by Clapton, the song rolls out like a good Spring day in the country.
"Magnolia" was a surprise. I first came to know Tony Joe White because of his trademark "Polk Salad Annie" and his funny and funky live session at Austin City Limits, but this slow thoughtful ballad really makes use of his voice.
Hadn't heard any Frampton since the 70's and "Sending Me Angels" was nothing I'd have expected from him either, but it's a gorgeous gospel feeling song and Peter's voice has not changed a bit.
If you like any of the artists I've mentioned and want a various collection that will show the depth and breadth of their talents in ways that you have not expected, this is definitely a CD you need to get.
Jamie Oldaker and his Tulsa shuffle.......2007-01-11
Jamie Oldaker, the drummer with Eric Clapton for many years and with The Tractors and others have made a truly fine CD. The Tulsa shuffle is so good to hear in this setting. "Mad Dogs & Okies" is a CD that makes you smile and feel good. Many fine guests or friends are visiting the studio - the only one missing is the Master of Space and Time - the one and only Leon Russell. Even without him it is a GREAT CD.
Go get it, you will love it.
Rene
What a joyous day when I heard the CD play.......2005-10-22
Off the Charts - a must for all that truly like music - and I don't mean today's stuff.
A blues album tride and true.......2005-10-13
The brainchild of Jamie Oldaker, Mad Dogs & Okies is a collection of artists, musicians, and writers that are wither from Oklahoma of have been involved of influenced by Oklahoma music over the years. It includes artist such as Vince Gill, Eric Clapton, Peter Framton, Taj Mahal, and Willie Nelson. The song selection is a combination of original material and covers. Some songs work ("Promises") and some don't ("Can't Find My Way Home"). One things for sure, it a blues album tride and true.
Great album.......2005-09-30
Love this CD! There's not a bad song on here, a great mix of honest American roots, country and blues songs.
Jamie Oldaker has put together a great CD. The Eric Clapton song is Clapton at his best for me, a great bonus alongside his new album. The mix of styles come together perfectly, it's an amazing line up of artists, anyone into country, blues or rock will love this release.

Unconvincing retro junk.......2004-04-10
Soul music is great. Funk is great. This, however, is neither soulful or funky and by no means great. This is lousy wannabe music made for lazy losers. I tried to like it. I really did.

digest it!.......2003-05-03
well all it takes is an open mind AND an appreciation for the real classics. first off let me note that you have to forget about the ramitdownthethroat classics that you've been force fed all these years on so called classic radio. these remakes go beyond what you are soooo used to over the years. slip away &
the pusher are just simply to 'out there' to actually compare them to the originals, and for me that makes them so enjoyable!
and for your listening enjoyment they take a journey on some lengthy orginal jams. ok some of this cd falls flat on its
[behind], keep on running the old spencer davis classic and leon russell's delta lady simply could of been left off this
otherwise trippy and jamming masterpiece. so get it if your adventurous otherwise leave it alone and buy some boston. btw
any one remember the cd the beautiful people's if 60's were 90's?
this cd is a whole lot in that vein but a whole lot more fun!

Cocker Powerhouse.......1999-10-05
I agree completely with the last reviewer who forgot to hit the 5 star selection. A monument to an incredible series of concerts that pushed Joe and his entourage to the limits every night. It captures a time and spirit perfectly and the music sounds as dynamic today as ever.
Is this the best live album ever made?.......1999-02-16
Listening to Mad Dogs and Englishmen, it can be hard to believe that this was cut nearly thirty years ago, or am I just older than I care to admit. Apart from a few ropey moments, mostly courtesy of Leon Russell, this album is just sensational. The sound quality is amazing, the playing is tight, the songs are great and it just plain oozes soul. Head straight for "Drown in my own tears" and "Space Captain", rather than the more obvious well known tracks like "Delta Lady". What really amazes me about this album (and in the same category goes stuff like "Astral Weeks" and "Steve Stills 2") is just how little we have progressed. It may be 30 years old, but it is all there. You won't regret buying this, and if anyone out there knows of an album in the same style that has really advanced the plot since 1970, I'm all ears!

Anyone who would like to hear what rock music concerts used to be like when they were raw and powerful, with unbelievable background vocals, should hear this album.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25
I have always admired the nonchalant and somewhat dry humor of Noel Coward lyrics, not to mention the interesting twists and turns that his music often takes, I admire Ian Bostridge for attempting his songs and doing a "bang-up" job of it! A quote from Ian Bostridge prior to making this recording:"My first concern while contemplating a disc of Noel Corward songs was finding a voice for them,,,,,,We need to remember that, in Coward, we have not only a formidable playwright and screenwriter, but also the English equivalent of Irving Berlin or Cole Porter". After I heard this from Bostridge (on an interview on ABC) I began to appreciate the songs much more than previously. There is much philosophising going on as in "I Travel Alone" and some are quite humorous as in "Mad Dogs and Englishmen". One has to listen more than once to get it all, but it's worth the time. And I definately think that Ian found the voice to sing them.Do I prefer Bostridge singing classical??Of course!!!!!But I still enjoy a break now and then and I'll take this disc for that reason.
Mad dogs and an Englishman called Ian .......2005-09-02
I must say that I approached this album as a fan of Ian rather than Noel Coward (and admittedly still don't really have a good idea of who the man is). So in terms of Ian's singing, I like it a lot. He has a wonderfully dextrous voice and a clear tone, complemented by Jeffrey Tate on the piano and the soprano Sophie Daneman for several numbers.
Generally I find myself unable to appreciate the work of classical singers who do crossover albums, but Ian is an exception. It has been said elsewhere that he may lack a robustness in his voice, but here in fact, one would not wish for an overpowering tenor. He isn't at all overblown, unlike many other singers in crossovers. The lightness of his voice lends a kind of intimacy to these recordings, as if he were singing in a café or an at-home musical evening.
The material is, of course, a departure from Schubert, &c., but he handles it well. However, I do think that he has a better emotional feel for the 19th century German romanticists and the 20th century British classical composers (i.e. Britten). This recording is pleasant but it seems to me to lack the emotional depth of Ian's Schumann in particular - a perceived deficiency that might lie with the composer Coward rather than the performer.
I like to listen to this CD when I want to listen to Ian sing, but am not in the mood for his more serious/depressing recordings (a la Schubert & Britten). The lyrics are pretty inane, the same goes for the songs themselves - melodically speaking - but Ian makes them special. So four stars.
Coward the Composer, Quite Charming without the Camp.......2002-11-18
I love this CD. I have a collection of Noel Coward performing his major songs, and I found it entertaining, but frankly I was never much drawn to it after the initial novelty wore off. I never really appreciated Coward as a composer because his campy persona and limited vocal talents got in the way. I bought this CD as a gift for a big Coward fan, and I am ashamed that I have not yet given it to him because I enjoy it so much. Bostridge is a really fine tenor. The beauty and subtlety of his voice bring out the beauty of Coward's melodies and the wit of his lyrics without overwhelming them with a heavy and mannered "classical" style, which is the bane of most such "crossover" CDs. The CD is also beautifully recorded. Outstanding songs include "I Travel Alone," "Parisian Pierrot," "World Weary," and "A Room with a View." Bostridge also has just the right touch with the goofier songs like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," "Something to do with Spring," and "Any Little Fish." I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys witty cabaret songs in general and Coward in particular. It really did give me a new and greater appreciation of Coward's considerable talents as a composer.
COWARD'S THEATRE SONGS.......2002-09-30
Sometimes musical artists should NOT attempt cross-over albums. I am a huge fan of Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland, but their ventures into "popular" music were, at best, misguided and, at worst, heavy-handed and pretentious. Although Ian Bostridge does not embarrass himself, there is no question that he should stick to more "serious" music and leave musical comedy to other singers.
The theatre songs of Noel Coward take a very different kind of approach than Bostridge gives them. They need an actor who happens to be singing. Except for a very few of the songs on this CD (written by Coward for operettas instead of musical comedies) Bostridge's approach is absolutely without any character. All of these numbers are impeccably sung by Bostridge, but none of them are ever really acted. Coward's songs MUST be acted whether they were written in a comic or sentimental vein. The result is another misfired cross-over album in what otherwise is a splendid career.
