In the Kiss universe, more is always, well, more. With this latest installment in the masked rock marauders' live franchise, they have gilded the already overweening lily even more by hiring the 60-piece Melbourne Symphony to accompany them on 10 tracks. Like those who have gone before them--from Deep Purple's coupling with the London Philharmonic Orchestra back in 1970 to Metallica's 1999 pairing with the San Francisco Symphony--Kiss's symphonic partners add a dimension and complexity hitherto absent from their hard-rock ethos. But that's not necessarily a good thing since Kiss are true American primitives, and their anthemic songs work best in their raw, unvarnished state. The addition of the orchestra muddies their trademark sound: at times Paul Stanley's bombastic in-your-face delivery is strangled by an aggressive army of strings, which also tend to totally subsume Gene Simmons's sturdy bass playing. The symphony musicians (who all performed in Kiss makeup) are best appreciated on a lumbering beast of a song like "God of Thunder," where they become an ominous presence adding menacing sound effects and a chilling dynamic as Simmons croaks out the lyrics, or on "Beth," the band's Top 10 ballad, which brandished strings in its original form. For those who aren't enamored of the pairing of black tie and black leather, Kiss has considerately included six unadorned tracks, as well as six never-before-performed-live acoustic versions of classic hits. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars We've been waiting for this.......2007-02-01

Diehard KISS fans have been waiting for Alive IV since the 1996 reunion which was now over a decade ago. Marked by the absence of guitar whiz Ace Frehley on lead and replaced by nobody Tommy Thayer, there is enough classic material and nice additions like Psycho Circus and Shandi to make this a worthwhile addition to that diehard KISS fan waiting for this for years. It is a worthy successor to the under rated Alive 3, and certainly better than the lame Alive II. The addition of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to close the night's set list only jazzes up a number of classic tracks but are subtle enougfh to not slow them down. The slick guitars and precision drumming are not lost in a blur of strings, but make KISS for once seem like the high class dirty businessmen they always have been. The addition of the classic makeup sees KISS staying true their origins as sleaqzy shock rockers; however, most of the shock appeal has been gone for a long time and can now be appfreciated as good glam rock music that is chessy enough in itself that we don't laugh AT it, but revel in the fact that Alive IV is finally here and while it may not be even close to the classic first Alive al bum, is a fun and worthwhile listen.

5 out of 5 stars Sym"phony" Not At All Fake.......2007-01-05

This is one of KISS' best ALIVE! albums. They not only do songs in a pure rock n' roll spirit, they also perform them with the aid of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. I've heard people say that because of the symphony, KISS is suck-ish. This is far from the truth. KISS actually improves the sound of their songs by doing them with a classical touch. This is a must-buy for any KISS fan.

2 out of 5 stars Rotten ,Stinky Kiss.......2006-06-15

Check it out ,that these tough guys from New York would ever see themselves jamming with a pompous orchestra.....NEVER MAN.

Yet let's put all skepticism aside. Let's ASSUME it's a good idea like Deep Purple. Well...It's not. This music was not made to be played with an orchestra. That being said, the sound is horrible and the vocals are covered by the orchestra. Surely , Kiss is more than this.

Kiss was always for the rockers and always for the fans who loved pure Rock and roll. I'm sorry but the songs are good ,just not planned or played well.

2 out of 5 stars Bad Song Selection. WHY??.......2006-05-03

This project could have been so great, but the band AGAIN decides to play is SAFE with the classics (with 1-2 exceptions). WHY?? Most of these tracks are not even suitable for Symphony anyway. Why not go for some rare tracks, maybe some never even played live, or even cool tracks from the Solo albums? NO- that would have been INTERESTING. Look at Great Expectations for example - WHAT A GREAT CHOICE!! It's the highlight of the show. Why not completely go experiment? Do we need songs like IWMFLY, SIOL or RRAL in this setlist?? NOO!! Why not play World Without Heroes, or a song like Peter's I Cant Stop the Rain? But even with the current setlist, KISS cannot get creative. I mean, who wants to hear that lame guitar intro to Black Diamond when you have a symphony orchestra sitting right behind you? Why not have a short symphonic intro instead? I mean c'mon....
One other note. This setlist proves once again that Beth is the greatest KISS song ever written. Just listen to it. Ageless. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best Kiss collection........2006-05-02

Yesterday after a couple of years i put on in my car cd player Kiss Alive IV Simphony and i must say that this double cd rocks (it's much better than kiss aliveIII). I'm also pleased with Peter Criss playing and i got to say that Peter's playing fit much better with the classic songs than Eric do. Tracks like Deuce, Shandy, Forever, Sure Know Something, God Of Thunder sounds better than the original version. You can also compare the Kiss Symphony dvd with the Rock The Nation dvd: the first one is much better and Peter's touch is unique. Even if Eric may be a better player, Peter's playing has the feeling that make kiss classics just magic.

5 out of 5 stars The Hottest Band in the World!!! KISS..........2007-01-12

This is really a good CD. The music is typical KISS...but only missing my favorite member: ACE!!!

When ACE is in the line-up...nobody can touch KISS, because he actually improves the band. He gets to play his songs and deliver those power guitar solo's he is famous for.

ACE...you are the BEST...and my FAVORITE!!!

Hey...got to give KISS 5 stars...I still love the music! Just missed the ACE songs...

4 out of 5 stars not a groundbreaking music event, but a nice piece that ads to the Alive! history. Recommend buying this with the new Alive Box.......2006-11-30

Kiss had their first major success with the Album Alive! back in 1975. They liked it so much that they reliesed Alive! II in 1977, which included new live songs and a couple of studio songs. Finally, in the Early 90's, they released Alive! III, covering their 80's music and again replaying some of the classics during their non-make-up days. Then in 1996, they did what was thought never to happen, Reunite and Mask up again...and the kiss army exploded all over again. Alive! IV is the culmination of that reunion process. The collection include psycho circus from their last album, but otherwise all the other songs are just their classics again. But, this time, they added the Melbourne symphony. It's not bad, but again it seemed like they were just doing what some of the other big rock bands did during this time (metallica, scorpions). But, it is a fun album, and a good one in the Alive series. Note, Ace Freeley is actually not the guitar player on this set, he had left the tour before this was recorded, Tommy Thayer was playing the role of Space Ace. The band had waited to long to release Alive! IV to get all the original members again. Shortly after this was recorded, Peter criss left again as well. But, good news is that The new Alive! box set is available that includes Alive! I, II, and III, and what they call the Alive! Millenium concert from 2000, which is all 4 original members, and was originally slated to be release as Alive IV, but got shelved somewhere along the way. Well, this disc is fun, the digipack set include the CD book and a mini-poster. I suggest getting this along with the new Alive! box set if your a kiss fan

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album Worth it for Any Rock Fan.......2005-06-04

Well I was a little angry that Kiss went off and copied Deep Purple and Metallica but I'm a hughe fan of Kiss so I natuarally enjoyed this very interesting new way to enjoy old classics. These guys are getting pretty old but they still can put out excellent live albums and they always put on a good show. From Deuce to Rock and Roll All Nite every track in between is excellent. Kiss is one of the best bands of all time and this is a great addition to your collection. I was glad to see such a good line-up on this album because they really haven't been putting out much music lately. Any Kiss fan needs to buy this album it's all new live songs and it's well worht the price.

5 out of 5 stars A mind-blowing live C.D !!!!!!.......2005-01-10

This has got to be one of the best alive! albums EVER. This double-disc album contains a concert performed on Febuary 28th from the year 2003. This concert has three acts:

Act 1.- KISS playing a couple of songs like everybody knows.

1.- "Deuce".- This song is one of KISS's best songs EVER and one of my favorite's. A great intro for a mind-blowing show.- 5/5.

2.- "Strutter".- Another song from KISS that was one of the best.- 5/5.

3.- "Let Me Go, Rock & Roll".- For me, this has got to be "the" complete version of this great rock 'n' roll song. This version is similar to the "Alive!" album. Majestic.- 5/5.

4.- "Lick it Up".- Another classic big hit from KISS, this time from the decade of the 80's. I love this one.- 5/5.

5.- "Calling Dr. Love".- HEY, what you know, even another classic hit from the 70's. God.- 5/5.

6.- "Psycho Circus".- This one is another KISS classic, at least for me, and a great way to end the first act.- 5/5.

Act 2.- KISS playing an acoustic segment of the show with the "Melbourne Symphony Ensemble" under the direction of Mr. David Campbell.

1.- "Beth".- A terrific classic single from Peter Criss from the 70's.- 5/5.

2.- "Forever".- Yet another classic single from KISS from the decade of the late 80's.

3.- "Goin' Blind".- This song is played better with an acoustic than with an electric.- 5/5.

4.- "Sure Know Something".- This is another song that is played better acoustic than electric.- 4/5.

5.- "Shandi".- I hate to admit this, but I don't really like this KISS song that much....it is too "stella", but a great outro for the second act.- 3/5

Act 3.- Now this is the best and the coolest act: KISS playing a mind-blowing show with the "Melbourne Symphony Orchestra". Just a Dire-Hit show.

1.- "Detroit Rock City".- To start off, KISS and the "Melbourne Symphony Orchestra" play one of the best KISS songs EVER. I gotta say this is a great version of the song.- 5/5.

2.- "King of The Night Time World".- The best song that follows "Detroit Rock City" is played right after it. This is the best version of the song! .- 5/5.

3.- "Do You Love Me?".- This is yet another KISS classic from the 70's. It sounds better with the Orchestra.- 5/5.

4.- "Shout It Out Loud".- This is yet ANOTHER KISS classic from the 70's. One of my favorite's from KISS.- 5/5.

5.- "God of Thunder".- In this song, Gene starts with a bass solo while spiting blood, following a breat "fly" on stage. Then the "CATMAN" starts hitting his drums following the ORCHESTRA. This is the best Versiono of "God of Thunder".- 5/5.

6.- "Love Gun".- Another KISS classic from the 70's and with a great version of the song.- 5/5.

7.- "Black Diamond".- A great KISS song, powerfull and on its best version EVER. The performance on this track is unbelivable.- 5/5.

8.- "Great Expectations".- This is the first time the play "Great Expectation" on stage without realesing on any other live C.D. before. One of the best with the "Australian Children's Choir".- 5/5.

9.- "I Was Made For Lovin' You".- Yet another KISS classic from the 70's and one of my favorite songs from KISS.- 5/5.

10.- "Rock and Roll All Nite".- This one is another KISS classic from the 70's and probably one of their top 5 songs they wrote. I love this song and it is a great version and outro.- 5/5.

Overall this album ROCKS, but if you want to live the full experience buy this C.D and the DVD, I did that and I was just stunned.

KISS RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Great Package For Collectors, Otherwise Boring.......2005-01-10

I first saw KISS in 1977 at The Nassau Coliseum in New York.
I say this because it was just before they exploded (no pun intended) into superstars. The only time I saw that "hunger" again was their reunion tour in the late 90's, but that was fleeting.
This is a great package, as KISS has never been known to skimp in that area, but the music itself adds to the parody they have created. The orchestral arrangements are predictable and do nothing for the songs.
I was embarassed to hear a 50+ year old Paul Stanley stating "is this cool, or what?" into the mike more than once.
What would be "cool" is for Simmons and Stanley to bow out now with whatever grace they have left.
