Comprehensive, but a little goes a long way.......2005-06-03

A little James Gang goes a long way. Walsh's guitar work is always great, and the rest isn't bad. But after awhile it all starts to run together as a whole. The Walsh period was the, then, newest and most creative of course, and the rest either continues more of the same at best, or becomes bland at worst.

In an ipod world these songs might work better woven as part of a large 70's hard rock playlist so the songs remain fresher when the songs come on at random. The top ten (including Bomber, Funk 49, Walk Away and some others) could be their own short playlist/best of. Needless to say I can play all Zep or Who and it's all good, not so with this. I guess there's a reason classic rock stations play a few dozen of the former and two of the latter.

But it is great blues/hard rock with Walsh and passable blues rock without. Again, maybe an ipod playlist with JG, Cactus, Captain Beyond, (hard) Zep, Spooky Tooth, Faces, Free, and/or Humble Pie all the songs would be welcome. This collection on shuffle alone can get boring pretty fast.

I can't believe anyone would EVER consider post Walsh in a James Gang compilation set. The 3 stars is only for HIS involvement!! There really was no Gang after Joe.

great overview of Midwest hard rock band's finest.......2000-04-29

The James Gang had many different incarnations over their 1969-1976 existence. Originally led by guitarist Glenn Schwartz (later of Pacific Gas and Electric), who never recorded with the band, then their most popular period led by Joe Walsh, followed by periods with Tommy Bolin (later of Deep Purple and solo fame), Domenic Troiano (later of the Guess Who), and finally a period without a true lead guitarist which marked the end of the band. Repertoire's Best Of splendidly captures the cream of the band's recordings in all phases (save the Schwartz period obviously). There are a healthy 14 tracks with Joe Walsh, 9 with Tommy Bolin, and the remainder split between the Troiano and final phases of the band. With a playing time of over 150 minutes the set is a true bargain. The 24 page booklet includes dialogue with Jim Fox, the drummer, and only member of the band who was there from start to finish. The sound quality is immaculate and the set includes tracks not available on other Best Of releases, such as Joe Walsh's workout on the Yardbirds, "Lost Woman." For fans of Midwest rock and roll this is a must.

Excellent And Comprehensive.......2000-02-04

....just what you want in a career-retrospective set like this one. Though the Gang were never my (or anybody else's) favorite, they had enough good moments to warrant this 2CD anthology, and all of them are here. Don't worry, Tommy Bolin fans aren't cheated as there's plenty of his material on hand (in my view, the Gang's single best album is BANG!). The chance to hear all the various lineups makes this a pretty cool historical document you can play air guitar to.

Just tack on "Life's Been Good" (if you like that sort of thing).
That'll bring it to ten tracks and more reasonable (ie CD) length.
That song and album were released almost concurrently with this.

Re-Issue of the Classic Vinyl.......2005-09-12

Obviously most of the other reviewers are so young that they do not realize that this short, nine-song compact disc is simply a re-issue of Joe Walsh's Greatest Hits that was originally released on VINYL! That's one of those 12" black plastic looking things that maybe your parents have some of. I still have my copy. That's how I recognised the cover. This was released in 1978, and yes it does concentrate on Joe's early '70's period. So quit complaining about how short it is, a long play (LP) record can only fit about 50 minutes of music on it. Just take it for it is. If you're like me, and wanted a wider selection of Joe's work, get the Compact-disc-only version of his Anthology.

Great Joe Walsh.......2003-04-21

THE BEST OF JOE WALSH is just that. It features his best 70s cuts, with none of the clutter that affected his later work. "Turn To Stone" features lyrics that seem cautionary and a portent of trouble on the way, and "Rocky Mountain Way" is a sports anthem that still inspires me to set new records for myself in swimming and other exercise. It's missing some good songs like "Tend My Garden", but THE BEST OF JOE WALSH is still a great collection of early Joe Walsh.

A bargain. With drawbacks.......2003-03-08

This collection is much cheaper than the MCA's "Little Did He Know - Joe Walsh's Greatest Hits", yet it has three songs more, and the sound, at least to my unprofessional ears, is just as good.

But there are drawbacks: This album only includes 60s and early 70s tracks, so classics like "Life's Been Good", "Ordinary Average Guy" and "All Night Long" are missing (although we do get "Ashes, The Rain And I", "Mother Says" and "Bookends", which aren't on the MCA collection).
