It's up for debate whether or not this hellaciously fun, sexed-up, blues-dirge rock band single-handedly "invented grunge" when they burst onto the Seattle scene in the late 1980s. Mudhoney's act notoriously featured loud guitars lathered in distortion, pummeling drum assaults, hair flying all over the place, and a singer who sounded like a drunken, horny werewolf. This collection proves they were masters at rollercoaster rave-ups with "You Got It" and "No One Has." Mudhoney even mustered up ballad-esque beauty for the self-deprecating, elegiac "If I Think." Alas, these 12 early songs from 1988-'90 are the group's highlight. Mudhoney lacked the focusing rage of youngster Cobain to propel their grooves away from their hard-partying origins or into the popular consciousness they deserved. --Mike McGonigal

This is just plain good rock music. It lacks the polish of later grunge, but the edgy style is great. Every song on here is worth a listen

5 out of 5 stars Before the Grunge Explosion ...There was this Seattle band.......2007-03-30

This album here contains The Superfuzz Bigmuff EP that first came out in 1988 pre-dating the grunge explosion in 1991. I first got the EP a few years ago (maybe 8 or 9) & wasn't too impressed. I first heard about Mudhoney through reading an article about the band, Nirvana, Kurt was influenced by this band as well as many others. But, Mudhoney was at the start like Soundgarden at this sort of "new" genre of music. Both bands were on the Sub-Pop label at this time & within a year Nirvana released A Sub-pop release w/ "Bleach."
About two or three years ago when I bought this album containing 12 tracks ('88-'90) instead of just the 6- song EP, I was and still am Blown away of how good it really sounds! Mark Arm, is the lead vocalist - And the rest of the band plays a wall of distorted guitar,bluesy-rock, and a heavy blend of garage, metal, psychadelic screaming punk! Don Peters (you may reconize the last name from Nirvana's Incesticide) beats the hell out of the drums all through this session. This album YELLS: PLAY ME LOUD! Definately more "In-your-face" sounding and a heavier dosage than Iggy Pop and The Stooges w/ their "Raw Power" release in 1972 or '73. And you can see the similarities and influence on this Cd. My favorite songs on this are: Opening track "Touch Me I'm Sick" - "Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More" - "You Got It (Keep it Outta My Face)" - and "In 'N' Out of Grace"; all better, nastier and more chaotic than anything put out by Nirvana. Mudhoney is the band that should have went BIG! Of course a lot of mid - late '80s music went un-noticed by the mainstream public.
If you are interested in grunge or just like heavy good rock music, please consider this, especially if you like The Stooges. This is the "grunge" album to get. Better (IMO) than all the others! 5 stars

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars.......2007-03-09

back in the day the critics had me all up on this album. it was getting 5 stars here, there, and everywhere. well, that was back in the day. i no longer respond to this stuff as i once did. it did not hold up with time. it is a fine, stooges influenced slice of garage rock, and nothing more. well worth having, but not essential rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars The grunge superstars.......2006-07-03

When this came out they were the band that everybody thought were destined for greatness and stardom, not Nirvana. I remember going to see them and not Cobain and his boys because this was much much better in our opinion. Shows us we were wrong on one account: they did not make it big time as Nirvana would but they weree good, very good.

5 out of 5 stars must have mudhoney.......2006-04-27

probably one of my favorite albums of all time...heavy and brilliant. you should have it!

This three-CD, 84-song indoctrination to The Basic Hank may not actually offer all of Hank's singles (it's missing most of his Luke the Drifter tunes, and his duets with Audrey), but it goes a long way to explain why Williams was country's first big legend and a superstar by 25. Smitten with the blue yodel of Jimmie Rodgers and the mountain whine of Roy Acuff, Williams gradually added a racy edge to brew his own style of honky-tonk. And with the good-natured wink of "Hey, Good Lookin," the Cajun spice of "Jambalaya," and the donkey's bray of "Honky Tonkin'," Williams shows that he could balance his melancholia with upbeat songs of joy. Whatever his subject matter, however, Hank's aim was always for the heart. As these songs attest, he rarely missed. In beautifully restored audio. --Alanna Nash

I am happy with the total package.

5 out of 5 stars Hank did it this way............2006-12-27

If you want to have one Hank Williams CD to complete your music collection, this is the cd to own.

5 out of 5 stars We miss Hank..........2006-09-24

Hank Williams was an amazing artist. He was a prolific songwriter (he wrote a lot of his own material) and a phenomenal singer. His songs are sad, haunting, all knowing. Hank is REAL country music. This should be required listening (along with The Patsy Cline Collection) for all current country performers (I hesitate to call them artists, except for Dwight Yoakam, who is fantastic). Hank was so sincere in his work. It's a shame that he died so young (and essentially drank himself to death at too early an age), but this 81 song collection is extraordinary. I listened to almost the entire thing when I bought it, as I loved it so much. The only quip I really have is the inclusion of the first song on the album, I'm Not Coming Home Anymore. The recording is from the sole surviving acetate cut, and it sounds horrid. For those who don't know, albums were recorded directly onto an actual disc/record/vinyl recording in the very early days of recording. The recordings didn't last very long, which is why they sound horrible today. When you start playing the album, it sounds like Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. They should have just dropped the song. I would recommend skipping it, and starting on the song Never Again (Will I Knock On Your Door). This collection is a bit pricey, but it's worth it....

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding collection.......2005-12-28

Simply put, this is the finest collection of Hank Williams "singles" yet. The recordings are original, and so is the sound; although a fair amount of "cleaning" was done. This is a 3 CD set (along with a booklet) and also includes a few previously unreleased numbers that, up until 1990, were not known to exist. If I had to purchase just one Hank Williams collection that spanned his entire career, well, this one is it. A+

5 out of 5 stars Animals - 'The Singles Plus' (BR Music).......2006-11-11

Two CD's, total of 41 tracks of, what I assume are all the singles The Animals had ever put out. Many of you should remember most of these killer British Invasion tunes, like "House Of The Rising Sun", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", their anthem (sort of?) "It's My Life", "When I Was Young" (my personal Animals favorite), "A Girl Named Sandoz" and "San Franciscan Nights". Let's not forget their unbeatable covers, such as Bo Diddley's "Roadrunner", two Ray Charles numbers "Talkin' About You" and their superbly done "Mess Around" and Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire". Sound quality is excellent, I must say. An absolute must-have!

5 out of 5 stars It's About Time, And Loooong Overdue!.......2004-04-15

this is certainly the best Animals compilation yet! One of my favorite tracks that nobody's mentioned yet is the bluesy Hendrix inspired B-side "It's All Meat". I hadn't heard that one in 30 years! One of these days Alan Klein will get off his lazy butt & SACD all these tunes, plus the long overdue Cameo/Parkway label masters! (both controlled by ABKCO in the US). Till then, this is the most diverse compilation out there!

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Discs........2003-07-30

Have you ever played that game with your friends--suppose you were shipwrecked on a desert island--suppose ( somehow ) there was electricity and a CD system--if you could only have 10 or 20 CDs, which ones would you choose ? Well--for "baby boomers" like me, here are two discs that qualify. This is without question the ultimate collection of hits--and great "B" sides--of the Animals, and Eric Burdon. It is the most beautiful import from Holland since the tulip !

In North America, it was called the "British Invasion"--in Britain, the "Beat Boom". The Beatles' international success opened the door for many other UK groups, and the R & B-influenced Animals--the pride of Newcastle--were easily one of the best. " The House of the Rising Sun " is surely one of the greatest singles of all time, and with Eric's powerful, earthy voice , many other hits would follow. They are all included in this package.

It should be noted that their early hits were all produced by Mickie Most, who passed away earlier this year. The Animals' fine keyboard player, Alan Price, left the band after a few hits--I seem to recall that Alan didn't like flying--but went on to forge a successful career in music on his own. A terrific singer/songwriter himself, Alan's talent can be enjoyed through a wonderful, two-disc anthology called "Geordie Boy", released in 2002.

The Animals went through various personnel changes over the years, with the occasional "reunion" tour. Their induction into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame was much-deserved. Some of the 60s British groups sound dated today, but the Animals' music remains exciting and vital.

A couple of years ago, I saw Eric perform at the annual Ottawa Bluesfest, with a group of younger musicians known as the "New Animals". Well--Eric is no "oldies act" ! Of course, he did many of his hits, but his voice is as strong and dynamic as ever and the Ottawa crowd loved him !

So--if you are trying to decide which Animals collection to buy, don't hesitate. This is it ! 41 tracks--2 generously-filled CDs--and very reasonably priced.

Can I give it 6 stars ?

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Chronicle of the Animals' music and talent!.......2001-11-10

Throughout the years, I have heard many complications of the Animals- mostly in vinyl and audio cassette. Such complications, until now, were lacking many qualities: poor sound quality, re-recorded tracks (utterly dissapointing, and a limited array of selected tracks to put on an album. Well, those times are now over, thank goodness. The music of the Animals is not like any other music of the time period. Eric Burdon, with fiery, loud vocals- which can change in tone and attitude in a single song, is rhapsadic. Accompanying Burdon's vocals, the sound of a dreary organ, steady drumming, and other such qualities, are clearly apparent in the tracks in this CD as described:

CD 1: rich with early Animals' music. Classics like House of the Rising Sun, It's My Life, and We Got to Get Out of This Place- are just splinters of a redwood tree. Here, the FULL version of "Talkin' Bout You" is played- with strong blues flavor and a touch of soul.

Other tracks like "Roadrunner," I'm In Love Again" are nice to hear in sheer clarity, compared to listening to those songs on vinyl (yes, a long time ago). Rareties like "Blue Feeling" and "Mess Around" are nice to have on CD. Finally, the song "The Night" is a track recorded in 1983, nice to check out.

CD2:Chronicle of the Second Era of the Animals. Tracks 1 thru 3 were recorded just before the original lineup of the Animals dissolved. The song "Don't Bring Me Down" is a good illustration of the talents of the original bassist- the late Chas Chandler, who would later be the manager of the Jimi Hendrix experience. The bass rift has a catchy rhythm and of course, the firery talent of Eric Burdon.

From tracks 4 thru 21, the works of the second era of the Animals is well chronicled. The band, at the time, was called "Eric Burdon and the New Animals" for obvious reasons. Here, a more innovative group of musicians emerge. Instead of Hilton Valentine (a very mediocre guitarist), John Weider plays slide guitar as well as violin. Weider's talent can no better be illustrated by playin lead/slide guitar of the songs: When I Was Young, A Girl Named Sandoz, and the COMPLETE, FULL version of Sky Pilot",an anthem about a chaplain who deals with the atrocities of war.

In addition, acoustic, electric guitarist Vic Briggs shows his talen on "Good Times" and The Other Side of this Life" as the acoustic guitar player- beautifully played. And of course, Burdon continued to maintain his musical talent: being from a calm and gentle voice ("Anything" and White Houses") to fiery and scortching ("Monterey",I'm An Animal")as well as many others.

The only hype that I have here is: where is "Winds of Change" and "Paint it Black." Also, it would be nice to hear "Hey Gyp," but the tracks included in this selection can pick up the slack.

The song "I'm An Animal" is a rare example of the works of guitarist Andy Summers, who would later join "The Police" 10 years later.

I was pleased to hear these classics in such clear clarity. Note that you may hear some scratching, mainly due to the ravages of time. However, if you are a fan of the Animals or British blues/soul, I highly reccomend this set.

Some people may think of the Anmals as a "bubble gum" band or "moldy oldies" band with little talent. Now, After listening to this entire CD set, you will not think of the Animals as such. I bet other classic rock fans will agree.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Star collection of Eric Burdon and Co. at their best.......2000-05-30

BR Music of Holland has collected the entire singles catalog of the Animals, spanning their career as both the Animals and Eric Burdon and the Animals in this double-disc anthology, and at quite an impressive price. It has been a real problem in the past to get a decent collection of Animals music. This set solves that problem, at least in so far as collecting all the hits in one place at one time. The booklet has complete track by track annotations, but is skimpy on biographical info. But hey, it far outdistances any other collection available. In fact this BR set is a combination of a previous 1994 BR release (disc 1) with the addition of the 21 tracks on disc two. The sound quality is quite good, and the price makes it quite a bargain. Pick it up and enjoy Eric and the Animals at their best.

The Walker brothers were not brothers at all - they were actually Scott Engel, Gary Leeds and John Maus. Once they adopted their chosen group name, they dropped their own surnames and became Scott, Gary and John Walker. Unable to make it in their homeland, they relocated to England, where they became successful all over Europe, although they had far more hits in the UK than anywhere else. They sang pop ballads superbly, though they could pick up the tempo enough to provide variation.

Their biggest hits were Make it easy on yourself (a Bacharach-David song) and The sun ain't gonna shine anymore (a Four seasons song, never released as a single by them). Both those songs were number one hits in the UK, also reaching the top twenty in the USA. My ship is coming in, a number three UK hit provided their only other (minor) USA hit.

Of their other UK hits, the biggest were No regrets (7), Another tear falls (12), You don't have to tell me (13) and a Scott solo, Lights of Cincinatti (13). Gary topped the charts in Spain with You don't love me, but it was only a top thirty hit in the UK. There is much to enjoy besides the hits, including covers of Living above your head (Jay and the Americans), Sunny (Bobby Hebb) and Stay with me baby (Lorraine Ellison).

Scott was the lead (and best) singer. John became jealous and the trio went their separate ways. Their solo recordings make up most of the second CD, although the last few tracks see them re-united. As my friend who posted the first review of this collection notes, the quality dips a little occasionally, but the standards they set are so much higher than many of their rivals.

Among the highlights of the second CD apart from the previously mentioned No regrets are Jackie (from a Scott solo album of Jacques Brel songs), Joanna (another Scott solo, written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent, better known via Petula's sixties hits) and We're all alone (a Boz Scaggs song that provided Rita Coolidge with a UK hit).

You could get the essentials on a single CD. I did that some years ago, but it left me wanting more, so I was very pleased to be able to buy this.

5 out of 5 stars The best WALKER BROTHERS compilation out there.......2001-11-16

I will never understand how this band was ignored in the their home country of the U.S. Scott Walker has one of the most powerful voices ever to be heard in music history.MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF and THE SUN AIN'T GONNA SHINE ANYMORE are two of the greatest songs ever that got close but somehow didnt crack the american top 10.People only familiar with those two songs won't believe their ears with this great cd.Scott's thundering voice carries the heartbreakingly powerful songs like LOVE HER,I NEED YOU,ANOTHER TEAR FALLS,STAY WITH ME BABY,JOANNE,I STILL SEE YOU,and many others. This cd also includes great songs from their mid '70s reunion like NO REGRETS,LINES,and the ((haunting)) ELECTRICIAN. Get this awesome cd set and discover the most underrated band ever.

4 out of 5 stars mostly great..........2001-06-29

This collection of 45 songs includes a few fillers, but Scott's amazing talent overrides many of the bumps in the road, though there are 4 tracks in a row on disc 2 that go from bad to worse, therefore I'm giving it 4 stars, instead of the 5 I'd like to give it for "Scott content".

Scott Walker (AKA Scott Engel for a short time) with a voice so full of a quality and beauty so few mortals possess, shines in their hits from the mid '60's like "Make it Easy on Yourself" and "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore", through his early solo career like "Joanne" (1968), to their short reunion with "Regrets" (1975), and the final cut in this compilation, which is also my favorite track, "Shutout", from 1981. He never managed to "click" in America, perhaps being too private and enigmatic for the press or promoters to get a handle on, but remains a "cult figure" to this day.

The packaging is excellent, with a sturdy "2 door" jewel case and a nice insert that includes a picture of all the single covers, and the info pertaining to it.

5 out of 5 stars A must for fans.......2002-08-01

Usually, I don't like collections, but this one is a definite must. In addition to some of her worldwide hits (Weisse Rosen aus Athen, Guantanamera, Milisse Mou, Only love), this compilation features some rarer songs as "A force de prier", "Rose parmi les roses", "Adios my love", "Ni vivre ni mourir" and four rarities sung in Dutch. This makes it a must for fans, and an interesting compilation for anyone who wants to find out what Nana Mouskouri is about. It showcases her great vocal talents in a variety of languages (German, French, English, Dutch). The booklet has some nice photos, showing some of the original 45 sleeves, and information on recording dates etc. All in all, this is one of the most interesting CD's on Nana Mouskouri.

It may be no secret by now that Charlie Rich was eclectic himself in his choice and style of music, so eclectic, so wide-ranging that he could not be categorized (a bit like Ray Charles). Due to that he never really achieved the success that he really deserved, years of countrypolitan or not, as nobody knew how to promote him. After "Behind Closed Doors" hit, the umpteen record companies that he had recorded for all seemed to release his songs from their vaults to capitalize on his new fame. I bought them all since I was not always able to when they first came out; they are all included in this package. Charlie had made new, equally as good or better. versions of his so-so hits (or non-hits) as he moved from record company to record company. Apparently he never did so with "A Little Bit Sweet", a favorite of this then-romantic teenager in the listening area of his home base of Memphis. "On My Knees", included here, was redone effectively with country singer Janie Fricke near the end of his countrypolitan reign. There was more than one version of "Sittin' and Thinkin'", a regional hit. The bluesy "There Won't Be Anymore" was restyled into a country hit in the mid-70s. The more ambitious version of "Midnight Blues" became an often-played album cut from "Every Time You Touch Me (I Get High"). The particular selection of the songs here seem very similar to the compilation "Original Hits and Midnight Demos" available in another venue. In any case, these are the originals from which the other versions sprang. This is a great piece of musical history. I value my own well-kept collection of these songs by a musician talented on all levels. I miss him.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Roots of the Silver Fox.......2003-12-21

Years before he found the sophisticated countrypolitan formula that would vault him to international fame in the mid-70s, Rich was a second-generation Sun rock 'n' roller. Starting in 1958, he released a string of truly fine singles that wed his background in R&B, blues and jazz to the reverbed energy of Sun's rockabilly sound. Surprisingly, he had virtually no commercial success in his six years at Sun, peaking at #22 with the self-penned "Lonely Weekends," hitting #67 on the country chart with "Who Will the Next Fool Be," and scraping the bottom of the pop chart at #111 with "Just a Little Bit Sweet."

Perhaps his delivery at such an early point in his career was just too similar to Elvis' contemporaneous work at RCA to capture its own audience. He sang with authority and not a little bit of swagger, but his Sun sides (actually released on the Sun subsidiary Phillips International) never ignited a commercial following. His success in placing songs with Sun labelmates suggests that perhaps Rich's style may have cut too smoothly across genres to engage those coming strictly from the worlds of rock 'n' roll, blues or R&B. It would be another 15 years before the record-buying world would wake up to his synthesis.

Rich's first single, "Whirlwind" b/w "Philadelphia Baby," shows a purer rockabilly sound to be a good fit for Rich's voice. By his second outing he was mixing in gospel ("Big Man"), and his third, "Lonely Weekends," adds blue country soul to the rock 'n' roll. He sang (and to a large extent, penned) doo-wop ("School Days"), Latin ballads ("On My Knees"), blues ("Who Will the Next Fool Be," "Midnight Blues"), R&B ("Easy Money," "Finally Found Out"), and pop jazz ("There's Another Place I Can't Go"). His versatility is admirable and effective, though it was probably confusing for the marketing folks at Sun.

Varese's compilation of Rich's original 10 singles (both A and B sides) is augmented by three album tracks and a pair of cuts previously unissued by Sun. Highlights among the bonuses are Rich's heartbroken, yet bouncy "Goodbye Mary Ann," the Jerry Lee Lewis styled piano rockabilly "Yes Ma'am," and the jazzy piano-driven blues growl "There Won't Be Anymore."

Fans familiar only with Rich's hit '70s sides, and perhaps "Lonely Weekend," as well as fans of '50s rock 'n' roll (or modern day revivalists like Big Sandy), will delight in this lesser explored side of The Silver Fox.
