5 out of 5 stars What a gas.......2007-07-06

Best 70's rock CD. This needs to be in any collection. If you like Boston you already have this. Even if your a little young for Boston don't skip this one. Once you here it, you will know what all the buzz was about.

4 out of 5 stars Great Compilation For Radio Fans.......2007-06-30

I don't own any of Boston's albums, but I've been familiar with their tunes for quite a few years. They are regulars on the local classic rock station and I've grown very fond of their radio singles over the years. I finally broke down and bought their "Greatest Hits" album and am proud to say that it quenches my thirst when I'm longing for some Boston. All of their top radio tunes are here including "Rock N' Roll Band," "Don't Look Back" and my personal favorite, "Foreplay/Long Time." You'll also find their power ballad, "Amanda," included on this album. The new tunes on here aren't all that bad either. "Higher Power" is a very cool tune and "The Star Spangled Banner/Fourth of July Reprise" is downright awesome. I love to crank it up to get into a patriotic mood.

I'm sure that some longtime fans of the group will find plenty of holes in this collection, but for radio fans such as myself, Boston's "Greatest Hits" is just the thing needed for a long road trip. I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Boston's Best.......2007-06-20

It's Boston's greatest hits.... what more could you ask for ??
Awesome, Brad Delp was one of the nicest "Rockstars" I ever met... May his troubled soul rest in peace.....

4 out of 5 stars Three new songs that should not be on here..........2007-06-12

The first two tracks and one stuck in the middle should not have been included on this collection. They are definitely not greatest hits and are sub-par songs. Another marketing ploy to offer new songs that aren't good.

The rest of the album includes all the songs it likely should, but it should also have included "We're Ready" and "Can'tcha Say (You Believe in Me)" from "Third Stage", which receives a rather light treatment on this collection. There is no doubt that those two tracks are better than the new "filler" songs they added instead.

2 out of 5 stars Pop Rock.......2007-06-10

Even though I'm mostly into heavier stuff, I still really like the guitar sound Boston has (so much so that I used to own a Rockman Soloist). It's too bad that the talent and tone were wasted on the songs found on this disc. Part commercialized stuff targeted for the masses, part sub-par pop-rock, none of it really comes off as truly great music. About the only song I really enjoy on here is "Don't Look Back". Pretty much every single on here I've heard on Classic Rock radio about a thousand times, and the rest of it just put me to sleep. If your looking for a pop sounding classic rock album, go get a Scorpions record or something (e.g,. Lovedrive or Blackout).

"Better music through science" was the Epic Records-coined slogan that Boston leader Tom Scholz hated, but this masterwork of studio-happy, high-school-parking-lot music earned it. Scholz fine-tuned his overdubbed guitar orchestra to a pitch that a thousand subsequent album-rockers couldn't resist. And why should they? Where the band's later records were hardly worthy of note, Boston pulls together classic after classic: "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," "Hitch a Ride." The pseudo-cosmic ambience invites scoffs as the year 2000 recedes into the past, but it's really just part of the disc's charm. Let it take you home tonight. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars slightly warmer and clearer.......2007-07-01

This remaster of the awesome 1976 tour de force album is slightly warmer and clearer over the original CD release. The biggest difference is the punchy bass. Don't expect a HUGE difference if you already own the original CD release. The differences are subtle, but they are there. Many CDs suffered from sounding "tinny" and "flat" during their release the late 80's. This was one of them. The 2006 remaster has a nice little booklet inside the case that tells of how Tom Scholtz painstakingly remastered the album in 8 or 9 days. Brad Delp's vocals stand out more now. Too bad that Brad isn't still alive. He will always be one of my favorite singers, and Boston will always stand out among all the rest with their tight, clean, and melodious sound. You can hear their brilliance in how they played together. I don't believe I've ever heard a tighter band, and this remastered CD clearly demonstrates how tight and ahead of their time Boston really was.

5 out of 5 stars Boston.......2007-06-13

If you love classic rock, this is a keeper. This was one of my favorites in the early 80's, I wore out the cassette:) This has to be in your collection of classic rock.

5 out of 5 stars Bands these days just don't come-up anymore with excellent album like this! .......2007-05-31

Boston is one of the best-selling albums of all time! Bands these days just don't come-up anymore with excellent album like this! This is the first album of Boston and it's their best album ever! All songs are excellent like; Rock N Roll Band, More Than A Feeling, Piece Of Mind, Foreplay-Long Time and so on.

Excellent vocals by the late Brad Delp, nice guitar licks by Tom Scholz (also keyboards), also on guitar is Barry Goudreau, Sib Hashian on drums and Fran Sheehan on the bass.

Again if you're collecting great rock albums, this is one you shouldn't miss! It's a collector must! This is my second copy of the album already.

5 out of 5 stars 70s Rock.......2007-05-18

Boston's self-titled debut album brings out all the best cliches in the formidable armory of music journalists. Expect to read lots of references to the 1970s; not limited to but no doubt including riffs on bad hair styles, screaming guitar solos of a type that long since died out in popular music, Watergate, and Arab oil embargos.

Being of a completely different generation to my mulleted predecesors, I regrettably can't share these golden memories. I can however enjoy this album. I first heard it from start to finish aboard a transatlantic flight to America, and remember being so bowled over by the up-beat balls-out rock of it all that the stewardess had to tell me to shush, if only because my humming was waking up the deaf AARP spokesman sat next to me.

I can't really find fault with this album; in my view More than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, and Rock N Roll Band are the fine tunes, mainly because they start the album with an excitable flourish. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A classic from day 1.......2007-05-12

If someone asked me to pick the best example of a great debut album then I would have to say Boston's first album. This album was the album to own when I was growing up. I knew kids in grade school who were on their 4th copy because they wore out the other three. You couldn't escape this record and you know what, that was ok because this is what a debut album should sound like. I believe the local radio stations played every track of the album. I had the cassette because I didn't have a record player so the sound quality wasn't that good but the songs really grabbed me. It wasn't till later when I was gainfully employed that a got a decent stereo system and a "ok" turntable that I was blown away by the production.

This album had great guitar playing, great vocals by the late Brad Delp, great songs with great hooks, and musicianship to match. Not only that, 90% of the album was recorded and mixed in the basement of Tom Scholtz's house in Boston and not at a big expensive recording studio so add points for it being a mostly a DIY job from start to finish. Remember this was before the days of digital reverbs and porta-studios. So if you never heard it, get it. If your wore out that vinyl and want to upgrade, get it. Got it? Good

This beautiful, touching cycle of five love songs on poems by Pablo Neruda was composed by Peter Lieberson for his wife, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. They were first presented in Los Angeles in May, 2005. This recording, coming as it does just months after Hunt Lieberson's untimely death, is a fitting tribute to her art. The songs are as arrestingly lovely and moving as are her performances of them. It will be a long time before another singer dares undertake a performance that might try to bring something new to the music. Scored for mezzo-soprano and a bevy of instruments (not all of which ever play at once--flutes, oboe, English horn, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, various percussion, harp, piano and strings--the songs are all "approachable" modern music, filled with both drama and a distinctively Spanish flavor. The songs range from a sensual appreciation of the beloved and a fear of separation to a peaceful but very sad evocation: "My love, if I die and you don't." Lieberson clearly composed them with great love for his wife; we the listeners benefit from that love in the direct, candid music and performances. This cycle may just be the Four Last Songs of the 21st century. A must. --Robert Levine

Album Description

This album serves as a profoundly moving tribute to the artistry of mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who passed away on July 3rd, 2006 after a long bout with cancer, at the age of 52. It is also a testament to the remarkable personal and musical relationship the singer cultivated with her composer husband Peter Lieberson, who adapted five sonnets from Chilean poet Pablo Neruda for this work, jointly commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily Moving Music in Extraordinarily Moving Performances.......2007-05-14

I have rarely been so touched at a deep emotional level as I have been by this collection of five songs written as a passionate gift of love by composer Peter Lieberson for his wife, the mezzo Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, a transcendent artist. Everything about the work -- from the outpouring of glorious sound and passion from Ms Lieberson to the texts by Pablo Neruda to the rich sounds of the Boston Symphony under James Levine playing Lieberson's richly romantic music -- adds to the emotional power of the performance. If one then understands that this music was written during a time when Ms Hunt Lieberson was struggling with the cancer that ultimately killed her, that the recording was made not out of desperation but out of hope during one of her periods of modest remission, and that she died not long afterwards, it makes the experience all the more powerful.

One must add that there are two other similarly nonpareil recordings -- eerily enough with singers who were either mezzo-soprano or contralto -- that are classics at least partly because they were made just before the singers died: Jan de Gaetani's recording of her husband's chamber orchestrations of songs by Mahler and Berlioz (including a heartbreaking 'Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen') Jan DeGaetani Sings Berlioz, Mahler and, of course, Kathleen Ferrier's 'Das Lied von der Erde' Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde / Bruno Walter with the touching dying-away of her last words 'Ewig ... ewig ... ewig'.

One can only hope that Hunt Lieberson, Ferrier and de Gaetani are singing together in Heaven. Ave atque vale.

5 out of 5 stars A fFinal Tribute.......2007-04-04

Lorraine Hunt Leberson was one of those rare singers who sang from her heart
and mind in perfect unity. Her many recordings attest to that fact. This
recording of her husbands composition is a glowing account of there love
for each other and a lasting tribute to their artistry.

5 out of 5 stars neruda songs just right.......2007-03-26

cd took a little long to come, but once it did was in great shape just as advertised. thanks!

5 out of 5 stars A soulful monument.......2007-03-22

I suppsoe one way to describne these songs is that they are of love and fate. Lorraine Hunt sings them magically - full of emotional and vocal force. So heartfelt are the music and singing that I find myself close to tears at times. Added to the impact is simply knowing of her sad fate, which both she and her husband were only too keenly aware of all along. The music is so accessible that I would be surprised if people require many hearings to enjoy it - if 'enjoy' is quite the right word. If you want to be moved by the human heart and the fate it echoes, this is one CD to get.
Only one complaint: the CD is mighty short, not much over 30 minutes or so. But I can't think of what might have been a companion piece unless it had been the Rilke Songs which, however, are already on another CD (also recommended).

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music.......2007-03-14

This recording is gorgeous. The texts by Neruda are enchanting, and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson gives a beautiful performance of music written for her.

5 out of 5 stars This Show was freakin' outrageous.......2007-03-26

I went to this show and it was unbelievable. It was one of the best Dave shows that I have ever been to and I have been going to Dave shows for over ten years. I have not listened to the CD yet, (as I just ordered it), but again, the show was incredible, especially being at the famous Fenway Park. Even if you are not a diehard DMB fan, you will enjoy this show. Definitely work the money.

5 out of 5 stars "Just in case y'all were wondering...I love that song too".......2007-03-22

Dave says that during this show after finishing a couple great tunes. What does that tell you?

If you've been to a show or two, you know that Dave Matthews Band is a superlative live act. This recording delivers excellent sound quality with a setlist that demonstrates how so many old favorites from the first 4-5 albums have evolved into epic jams. Grace is Gone ends with a Hoedown Jam, just sweet...A Super Funk 17:57 Jimi Thing. Fenway delivers great future classics such as Break Free, Idea of You, and Can't Stop. Quite simply, I listen to DMB everyday and this is the best single concert I've ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars It's not fair to compare it to the first album.......2007-07-09

Coming out with something as good as their first album was all but impossible. But their 2nd is still good on it's own.

4 out of 5 stars Great Follow-up.......2007-05-21

Continuing the theme from the first album, the only thing this lacks is 'progress' in the sense that the sound was codified in the first album and remains the same here. Where does the first album end and the second album begin.

As a musician, I like to see growth in the sound of a band, and in the writing. Boston's only lack here, and on their third album, too, is that their sound is so set in stone that there is no growth in this regard. They're stuck. Future albums I've heard are not the same, actually a digression, like de-evolution, going backward. I don't know, haven't heard them.

All I can say is that while the writing is consistent -- a must for my continued interest, the sound remains the same. And that is often a bad thing because people change and the music, and its sound, should reflect that change, be a part of that change.

However, all that said, if you liked the first album, you'll like this one. Only a couple less than great songs are on this effort. Most bands should do this well in their creative processes. I wish they would learn to spend the time necessary to create something worth recording as Boston did, even if it is sonically the same as the first.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad!.......2007-03-25

Could've sworn the cassette tape I had that this was to replace (got munched)had more songs on it, but hey, it's Boston!!!

5 out of 5 stars A superb second album, in spite of Tom Scholz' misgivings.......2007-03-20

I find it hard to believe, now, that the first time I heard music from Boston I didn't like it. What I heard first was their first album, self-titled "Boston", which is, I think a slightly stronger album than this, their second album. Looking back I'm sure that at least part of the reason that I didn't like Boston's sound was simply because it was so different. There was nothing in rock'n'roll even vaguely like the sound Tom Scholz's had conjured up in his basement. It didn't take me long to learn to appreciate the music, but it sure was strange at first.

Now Boston is one one of my favorite rock'n'roll bands of all time due, in large part, to Tom's guitar theatrics. Actually, that's the wrong word to describe his guitar playing,Jimi Hendrix was theatrical, Tom Scholz is simply magic. I think that his work is too often under-rated, probably because there is so little of it. To me, though, there is simply nothing to compare to the glittering glissandos that he seems to bring forth in effortless endless profusion. Combine the very tight overall musicianship of the band, Brad Delp's unforgettable vocals, and lyrics that still, in many cases, speak as much to the social issues of today as they did when written some thirty years ago, and you have an unbeatable combination.

The melody of "A Man I'll Never Be" is insanely complex for a rock'n'roll song, which is probably why (along with its six and one-half minute length) that it never got very high on the pop music charts. Tom Scholz is all over the frets on his guitar and is coaxing every bit of feeling he can get out of it. When one realizes that he plays no chords throughout this song his mastery of his instrument is truly apparent. He is, to me, in the same class as Eric Clapton, Duane Alman, Gary Moore, and Roger McGuinn when it comes to a short list of the best rock'n'roll guitarists of all time.

But he doesn't do it by himself. Boston was, until their breakup over legal issues with their record label, one of those bands in which each member can be considered a master of his instrument, whether it's Brad Delp and his voice, or Fran Sheehan and his bass, Sib Hashian banging away on the drums , or Barry Goudreau's wonderful rhythm and second lead guitar. Together they were far more than the sum of their parts as one can tell when listening to any of their various solo efforts or work with other bands. It was a magic combination such as happens once in a generation or less.

What makes Boston's music even more special is that the vast majority of what one hears on the albums was composed and performed by just Tom Scholz and Brad Delp. They had little help making their music, except for some lead guitar by Barry Goudreau and drums by Jim Masdea. It wasn't until the first album was sold to CBS that a real band was put together to produce the Boston sound. Thus, the folks playing up on stage are not only playing some of the most complex rock music ever conceived, they played it note perfect every time, so that Boston's live sound was as close to the album sound as it's possible to get.

The remastering that Tom Scholz did for this re-issue is simply remarkable. The richness of Brad Delp's voice on all the songs, but particularly on "A Man I'll Never Be"' has to be heard to be believed. The remix has transformed one of my best-loved Boston songs from a work of art into a true gem of the craft of music-making. Everything about the remix transforms this album and brings the sound alive in a way that one could never experience outside of a Boston concert. In this day of sound alike rap, hip-hop, and techno, the music of Boston stands as a beacon and an example of true muscianship and dedication to one's craft. Would that there was more music of this caliber.

4 out of 5 stars Poor Remaster, Good Album.......2007-03-16

I guess I'm one of the few that doesn't like the sound of this remaster. It sounds EQ'd for all the wrong reasons. There is audible distortion in places that sounds like clipping. Please Tom, give these master tapes to another set of ears. It sounds like you tried to make these remasters the difference between night and day. We just wanted a good transfer from the master tapes with some high quality ADC's. Some minor tweaking perhaps, but this is just too much. I suspect you've heard your own searing guitar solos quite a few times and your ears don't hear the album like a fresh pair might. I'm not sure if I'm hearing added compression, perhaps the original album sounded that compressed, but it certainly was mastered too hot. I wish the guy that did the Boston SACD remastered this too. Now that is one awesome sounding disc. But again, I appear to be in the minority (as well as comparing an SACD to a regular CD). I wonder if "hot" cd's and overly compressed music has finally taken it's toll on joe six-pack, so much that he comes to expect it.

I intially bought this album for a few selections I had heard from Classical 102.1 (KDFC-FM). I was pleasantly surprised that the entire album has a very satisfying collection of the greatest marches. I am very pleased with this album, and would recommend it for anyone who likes a broad range of famous marches.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-01-21

This CD would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys marches. Some of the marches are popular, others are not. All are well-performed and can be enjoyed - LOUDLY!

Great recordings of stirring music. I like to play it loud while my kids and I clean house. It makes it go by fast.

My father was a Marine in the ETC, he told me stories about how they went floor to floor checking for bad guys humming this music. I think it is great music to listen to, I really like track 3, it says so much in the title alone. I hope everybody like this music as much as I do!

The Boston Symphony was at the peak of its powers when it engaged the 34-year-old Seiji Ozawa for this 1969 recording of Petrushka, in which the orchestra's then 24-year-old assistant conductor, Michael Tilson Thomas, played the extensive solo piano part. Ozawa, in those years, was capable of striking sparks with any orchestra he faced, and there is a palpable sense of excitement to the Petrushka he uncorks here. The accounts of The Rite of Spring and Fireworks, recorded in 1968 with the Chicago Symphony, are equally dynamic and colorful. BMG's long-awaited 24/96 remastering unleashes the breathtakingly open sound of the original tapes for the first time on CD, and may require a volume cut to preserve peace with the neighbors. --Ted Libbey

4 out of 5 stars An Odd Release But A Bargain Price for Excellent Performances.......2006-01-14

One wonders why this pairing of Seiji Ozawa and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Michael Tilson Thomas and the Boston Symphony Orchestra all under the spell of Stravinsky was issued. Not that the performances individually need reinforcement because they don't. Perhaps it is the long relationship between Tilson Thomas and Ozawa or their similar approaches to this repertoire that was the driver. Whatever the reason, here are recordings that are a treat.

Tilson Thomas elects the 1947 version of Petrushka and offers a clear-headed, rhythmically sound, exciting performance. The warm Boston sound is intact and enhances his overall mood of the work. Ozawa and the Chicago forces give an all stops out performance of 'Le Sacre du printemps', a performance that is about as visceral and pagan as any on record. And the bonus of the brief but effective 'Feu D'artifice' fantasy is given a robust reading.

There are many recordings of 'Le Sacre du printemps' in the recorded repertoire: obviously every conductor wants to imprint his mark on this masterpiece. The sonics are all-important when the work is recorded and in the case of this recording the sonics are excellent. But there may soon be a startling surprise for lovers of this mighty, historically important music. This week Esa-Pekka Salonen gave a resplendent, detailed, emotionally charged performance that was recorded live by DGG in the Disney Hall. And if the technicians are able to cope with the amazingly live clarity of the acoustics of this grand architectural triumph, the recording may be the gold standard immediately upon release. Salonen has previously and successfully recorded the work with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1990. The growth in stature in the intervening years has never been more obvious that this current state of Salonen's Stravinsky. Watch for it! Grady Harp, January 06

5 out of 5 stars Great reading of these 2 works.......2005-12-07

Both the Rite of Spring and Petrouska are very well rendered in this recording... Ozawa's reading is insightful and very clear... The recording quality is great... Highly recommend this recording...

5 out of 5 stars Best or not, you'll really love this Rite of Spring.......2004-06-29

Being among my top favorite pieces in the 20th century (after all, this piece turned the view of classical music upside down), I have tested myself listening to various versions by different performers. As far as much as I listened, my top two will have to be Leonard Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic (the most brashing, bashin, mind-crushin'!!!) and this equally thrilling performance with Ozawa leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Officially, this is a major highlight throughout Ozawa's conducting legacy, still a very young man with seemly imperishable vigor and force very equilavent to his teacher Lenny. The Boston Symphony is an excellent orchestra to work with (the woodwinds and brass especially); otherwize the Chicago Symphony could have been the only other choice.

In my perspective, I had to admit that, just by focusing on the level of being barbaric and noxious, it slightly lacks that to Lenny, but on the other hand, it's brilliant controlled nail-biting high tempo can cover that.

Definitely worth buying!!! GO FOR IT!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Totally convincing.......2004-06-16

I have three recordings of "The Rite of Spring". I've known it in every detail since 1972 when I was 17 and I know the score inside out. This is the only performance (recorded or live) that I've ever heard that raised the hairs on the back of my neck, made me grip the seat and break out into a cold sweat, and ultimately made me understand what "The Rite" is all about. The recording does full justice to the performance. This is a "must have" for anyone who wants to understand the point of the work.

5 out of 5 stars The best Rite of Spring.......2004-03-28

Ozawa's account of Stravinsky's most famous ballet is nothing short of astounding. The conductor has the Chicago Symphony playing with total attention. What is so amazing about this recording is that the orchestra is completely controlled and balanced. Although one may prefer a more spontaneous sounding Rite, one would be hard pressed to find a recording with more energy, polish, and power.

Ozawa's Petrouchka (with Michael Tilson Thomas at the piano) is equally amazing. The beauty of phrasing and emotion Ozawa instills into the players of the Boston Symphony orchestra is chilling. Indeed, when this recording was made, Ozawa had just taken the reigns or the orchestra (however, over the years, his energy and intensity has lessened) and they play for their new music director with total conviction.

Fireworks, a short symphonic sketch by the young Stravinsky, shows the influences of his teachers, especially Paul Dukas in the orchestration. Although not a seminal work, the opus 4 is delightful.

The recording quality is of equal quality. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Life story?.......2007-06-26

I only gave "Third Stage" 4 stars because it's not long enough, darn it!!! That being said, I absolutely love this album. I remember buying the tape in [...]and playing it until it had that quavery, metallic sound that, unfortunately, the kids of today will probably never hear. Ah, nostalgia...

Anyway, while listening to "Third Stage," I felt like I was experiencing the memories of Tom and Brad and the rest of the Boston guys. Especially through Hollyann. Now that I'm getting a little older, I can't help but look back on the days of my youth through, if not rose-colored glasses, at least the watery, smooth and blurred finish of an impressionist painting. With Hollyann, I can almost see the couple standing proudly, hair flying in the breeze, perhaps watching the setting sun and standing for what they believed so strongly.

On the other side, Amanda, To Be a Man and Still In Love seem to be, partly, about the struggle to do right over wrong, to fight for love and for those you love.

Beauty, fun, introspection, love, sacrifice... the stuff of life. Also, the stuff of "Third Stage." If you like the unique Boston sound, "Third Stage" is a must-have for your CD case. Although, I still have my tape!!

5 out of 5 stars Third time is the charm.......2007-05-07

A successful lawsuit against CBS records and two mediocre recordings from Boston alumnus Barry Gourdreau later, Tom Scholz and Brad Delp stormed back onto the 1986 singles chart with Amanda, Third Stage's first single and lead off song. It took seven years to get this album released, but the delay was worth it, 40 minutes of beautifully crafted pop-rock, from Amanda's opening chords on the acoustic guitar to the soaring electric on Cool the Engines to the elegiac finale of Hollyann. If you want to purchase only essential Boston material, get Third Stage plus the first two albums and you'll have the absolute best of Boston - or anyone even remotely associated with Boston.

5 out of 5 stars A True Concept Album that was well worth the wait .......2007-04-13

In the late 1970s, as a result of the success of their first two albums, "Boston" established themselves as one of the premier bands in the Rock industry. I would even go as far to say that with the momentum they achieved with their debut album "Boston" (still one of the most successful debuts in history) and "Don't Look Back", that they might become the successors in Rock's line of royalty to Led Zeppelin (following the disintegration as a result of John Bonham's death). However, the problems that would ensue would completely derail this road for Boston. The 1980s would see the breakdown of the original lineup of the band and legal battles that would delay any future work by the band. By the Fall of 1986, the band found themselves in a very different position - the comeback position. This comeback would mark the launch of Boston's third album - "Third Stage". For fans of the band who had waited 8 years for the album, they would not be disappointed. The band assembles a terrific concept album that doesn't miss a beat.

For the most part, I consider Boston to be the partnership of guitarist Tom Scholz and vocalist (the late) Brad Delp. Boston had a stable lineup for their first two albums. In addition to Scholz and Delp were Sib Hashian, bassist Fran Sheehan, and guitarist Barry Goudreau. "Third Stage" would not include Hashian, Sheehan, or Goudreau. This was a result of a falling out the band had in the 1980s. Replacing Hashian on drums would be Jim Masdea (who played drums prior to the debut album) and Gary Pihl would pick up the void on guitars. However the partnership of Scholz and Delp was good enough to keep the Boston sound going. While Scholz often gets most of the creative credit for Boston, I really feel it is the unique vocals of Brad Delp that give Boston its edge. I always contend you can find another Tom Scholz on guitar, but there was only one Brad Delp on vocals. It was no surprise that "Third Stage"'s follow-up "Walk On" failed because Delp wasn't on that album. It is no surprise that Boston's career is currently in limbo (at the time of this writing) due to Delp's untimely death.

The nice thing about "Third Stage" is that it does integrate a loose concept theme around most of the tracks. It uses an analogy of the setting sail on a spaceship to someone maturing by reaching thirtysomething in age. The album reflects the maturity that a man hits when he reaches his 30s. While not all of the songs use the spaceship theme, the songs in one form or another reflect this maturity in age. It's not just the songwriting that is good, the musicianship of the band and powerful vocals of Brad Delp really are in top form.

One important note to make is that most of these songs were written in the early 1980s. The amazing thing is that Boston did not use synthesizers for this album. This is amazing for two reasons: 1) Even though it sounds like there is a synthesizer component, there isn't (Organs, pianos, and the Hammond G-5 help to fill the gap left by the synthesizer); 2) The idea of abandoning the synthesizer was more of a late 1980s trend (i.e. 1987 onward), yet Boston conceptualized most of "Third Stage" in the early 1980s. One must give Boston some points in creative and innovative thinking in the music industry for going with this trend early.

The Spaceship concept occurs on tracks 2 through 8. On track 2, "We're Ready" the spaceship might be getting ready to launch, but Boston actually is talking about one taking the next step in a relationship. Track 3 is an instrumental called the "The Launch" - it is divided into 3 parts (Countdown, Ignition, and Third Stage Separation). The music does sound like a spaceship launching. Once launched, on track 4, the spaceship will "Cool the Engines", but this is referring to calming down from one's younger days. On track 5, the spaceship arrives at "My Destination". "My Destination" might be the most powerful track on the collection. Most people are familiar with the radio-friendly power-ballad, "Amanda" - which is the first track on the album. "My Destination" is a different spin on "Amanda" - and overall I find it a better song. Delp's vocals are even stronger than "Amanda". This song deals with arriving at "my destination ... by your side" in a relationship. This again reflects maturity.

Tracks 6, 7, and 8 continue the spaceship theme. "A New World" is a very short instrumental, but refers to exploring the new world that the spaceship set sail to. Perhaps this is also the maturity of one in life. On Track 7, "To Be a Man", the person who set sail now must prove he is a man in his new world. This can also be reflected to everyday life as well. Finally track 8, "I Think I Like It", refers to the person enjoying the new world he set sail to, but also reflective of liking the changes in his life.

While Track 9 "Can'tcha Say"doesn't fit into this theme of setting sail on a spaceship, it might be the best track. It consists of two tracks - the powerful, hard-rocking, "Can'tcha Say" with a segue to the powerful power-ballad "Still in Love". The titles of these songs describe what these songs are about. Fusing these songs together really works. This "double trrack" is my favorite track on any Boston album. Delp's amazing vocals contribute to the power of this track. There is also the tenth track, "Hollyann" - this is a nice track as well.

The liner notes contain not only the lyrics, but notes on each track and notes on the making of the album. This is a great album - not a bad track in the whole lot. Highly recommended.

This compilation of music by Dvorak played by Yo-Yo Ma is just beautiful. Ma seems to understand just when Dvorak wants to be super-Romantic and sappy and when he is in fact being merely his usual expressive self. The former comes into bloom with the Slavonic Dance, in which he's accompanied by Itzhak Perlman and "Songs My Mother Taught Me," with Patricia Zander at the piano. But when it comes to revealing Dvorak as one of the most insightful and truly passionate of composers, with a particular understanding of the cello, Ma's playing of the B minor Concerto (under Kurt Masur, with the New York Philharmonic), the latter description comes into play. Ma gets every nuance out of the cello, and the way in which Masur, for instance, leads the winds against the cello at the start of the 2nd movement is just gorgeous. "Klid" ("Silent Woods") is given a deeply affecting reading as well, under Seiji Ozawa. 2004 is the 100th anniversary of Dvorak's death; this CD is fine tribute. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Yo-Yo Ma is a genius .......2004-11-16

words fail me on how to describe performance in this CD.It's very good, one of the best interpretations I have heard in a very long time. I must confess that since i discovered Ma du Pre I have not been able to listen to anything else nor did I attempt to do so. But out of the blue I bumped into this CD by chance & after hearing Yo Yo Ma's phraising especially the 1st movement infact the whole of Dvorak Cello was like something new to me.Ma plays with passion, emotions & strong commitment to the music in a different way.The Ochestra is in top form & allows the solo cello to shine at the right time.I never thought there is another interpretation that could surpass M.Rostropovich(Im sorry to say this I know he is a living legend & the 1969 record with Karajan is held in high esteem). Ma is accompanied by my favourate violinist Itzhak Perlman on "Humosresque no.7 for piano" & "Slavonic Dance no.10 in E minor"- the results are so sweet as many people know Perlman is a romantic specialist his tone with Ma's cello is heavenly. With regard to the "songs my mother taught me" the cello sounds good not best for the track personally im so used to hear the song being played on violin. There's nothing wrong with the cello it's just that it 's tone is a bit too strong for the composition but it's very well interpreted by Ma. They call this transcription in musical terms. Actually Ma deserves an apology as im one of those who have accused him of lacking in emotions &"look at me now i can play anything" attitude.I think those allegations are baseless & unwarranted when u hear this CD u will know u are into something beautiful. Overall grab this very fast before many people realise Yo-Yo Ma 's greatest gift of song.

5 out of 5 stars Life Is But A Dream..........2006-08-30

This CD is just pure magic. I know that is such a cliche' thing to say, but it really is. Of course, it really won't appeal to those people who are into EXTREME LIVING...whatever the hell that means, because to me, extreme living is living close to the soul, close to the spirit, close to the Invisible Source that makes and creates all things in and out of Itself.

Debussy was a composer who lived very close to this Invisible Stream. His music reflects a gentleness and yet a strength that flows throughout each composistion. The arrangements are dreamy and mystical and allows one to go into their "inner chamber" and pray in secret to the One who knows their heart as well as their soul.

As much as I love this CD, I tend not to listen to it in the car. I once listened to it while making a routine drive to Santa Monica. The CD stopped and I had somehow missed all of my exits and ended up in Ventura...talk about being in dreamland!

It's a great CD to put in your walkman and go to an outdoor cafe' where you can sip a cafe latte and write poems to an unknown lover whose face you cannot remember, but whose gentle breath is the scent of lavendar...oh, I wax poetic...so sorry...

If you are into quiet and stillness, get this CD...it's truly a breath of fresh air in this noisy, crowded, extreme world we have to be in but not necessarily of...

Peace & Blessings

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, dreamy.......2006-07-17

This music evokes both emotions and images of life waking up in spring, even being in a magical forest where anything can happen, or floating on clouds. You can just enjoy the music and let your imagination soar or the music can take you into that trance-like state where you can access creative ideas and creative solutions to any problems - and maybe they just dissolve of their own accord.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous collection !.......2005-09-13

If you like Debussy - whom I have heard called one of the progenitors of ambient music - you will love having his most inspiring and beautiful works together on one cd. These works are tranquil and serene, and yet they don't fade into the background - no matter what you are doing - because they are true art. When this cd is playing you can't help but listen and sigh. My cats love this cd, too.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Debussy and French music.......2005-06-30

Compilation CD's like this are an excellent first CD to purchase when first exploring a new composer or style of music ("Expressionism" in Debussy's case). And this Philip's "Set your Life to Music" collection is usually a sure and safe way to do that given their well thought-out selections, themes and quality recordings. This CD here contains many of the most popular, lyrical and enchanting works of the 19th-century French composer, Claude Debussy. The range of selections are diverse and satisfying: from his major solo piano works through his top chamber music (for 2-5 instruments) to the full-blown orchestral selections of great imagery and dreaminess that can transport one into another world of great serenity. (But, there are enough sudden changes in loudness and rhythm to upset any notions of perfect bliss and keep the daydreamer from falling asleep - hence the title, "for Daydreams" and not "for Bedtime" like in other offerings in this Philips' series) Regardless, this CD is an excellent introduction to Claude Debussy as well as being overall relaxing music to enrich one's life.

One interesting music history tidbit on Debussy that might interest the new listener: Even though Debussy did not like the label, his music was labeled "Expressionism" for the similarities to what the French artists like Monet were doing at the same time. In Debussy's case, his intent was to create "emotional impressions" with music that evoked specific moods and images in the mind - not unlike what the "impressionistic painters" were trying to do on canvas using pure color and form to evoke the fleeting, emotional moment of a landscape scene. "Prelude of the Afternoon of the Fawn" is a good example of this dreamy, lingering, emotive style of music.

5 out of 5 stars Dream and Classical music are magic.......2005-02-16

This CD is one of the best among its classical collections. (bach for breakfast is my one of them) It puts me to any place I dream of whenever I listen to this cd. It usually brings me into outer space, or sometimes go to the sky or under the sea. You can also just sit back and relax while listening to the music. In addition, once I get mad or not calm enough, I just put this cd on and it cures my anger.
Classical music is magic.
