Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the B ," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. --Genevieve Williams --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2007-06-27

listening to this CD makes you realize how great john fogerty was back in the day. great songs, great sound.

5 out of 5 stars Gets me going in the morning.......2007-06-27

I've been listening to this CD for 2 weeks in my car on the way to work.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack of an era.......2007-06-15

This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most essential CDs of all-time.......2007-04-22

Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Chronicle" is one of the first CDs any music fan should buy. It's a flawless collection of some of the greatest American music ever recorded.

5 out of 5 stars CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL IS A REAL ROCK N' ROLL BAND PLAYING REAL ROCK N' ROLL MUSIC. .......2007-02-12

I will be writing a review on a band that needs no formal introduction. The world in general, to this very day, is still felt by their influence despite disbanding in July 1972. The roaring sixties would be the decade that would produce Rock's most elite bands. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL would be one of those bands that would be born in the mist of the sixties and deliver some of Rock's most sacred classic songs. The album I'm about to review is the result of some of CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL'S most sacred classic songs. This compilation album would be titled as "CHRONICLE, THE 20 GREATEST HITS." This legendary compilation album was originally released in 1976 on Vinyl/LP and cassette on the Fantasy Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL is for real. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL will always be remembered for being the peoples band and not just for the real tough and rugged sound that went through their amplifiers and microphones. When you hear their music, you know right off the bat that it is truly CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. There is nobody that can play real raw Rock n' Roll music like they can. What's even more fascinating is that CCR never used any synthesizers, gadgets or enhancements to improve their overall style of sound that the band would forever be remembered for. CCR played their music with such confidence and authority that they would play in your face with their motto "what you hear is what you get." What CCR also should have said is "you've already heard the rest, now come hear the best. CCR'S sound is so rare and unique that nobody has ever dared to copy or emulate them in anyway shape or form other than the tribute band named CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVISITED. When brothers John Fogerty on lead guitar, vocals and the late great Tom Fogerty on rhythm guitar met up and recruited Stu Cook on bass and Doug Clifford on drums, a rare band would be born with a rare sound that would forever identify them in a very unique way. CCR'S music is so bad a*s that their rugged tough music style will forever always be associated with all bikers and be labeled as biker music. In my opinion, "CHRONICLE, THE 20 GREATEST HITS" is a true testament of their most celebrated Rockers and is a fine tribute to a real band that was truly ahead of their time. CCR represented the people and the youth culture of the turbulent roaring sixties and it showed through their music.

In my opinion, every single Rocker listed on this album is nothing short of outstanding. All I will tell you is if you really want to hear some real Rock n' Roll, hear the following Rockers such as "Susie Q," Fogerty's composition Rocker that would later become Ike and Tina Turner's signature classic song "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Green River," "Commotion," "Down On The Corner," "Fortunate Son," the Rock band anthem "Travelin' Band," "Up Around The Bend," "Run Through The Jungle," "Lookin' Out My Back Door," the Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight and The Pips classic song "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," "Have You Ever Seen The Rain," "Hey Tonight" and "Sweet Hitch-Hiker." Believe me when I say that these Rockers kick a*s.

CCR also has a mellower side to their Rock style and it is evident in legendary classic songs such as "I Put A Spell On You," "Lodi," "Who'll Stop The Rain," the encouraging classic "Long As I Can See The Light" and the emotional hard hitting "Someday Never Comes."

Overall, this is one hell of a real a*s kicking album worth checking out. Hearing this whole collection might make one think that how can anybody record and put out great music like this constantly and consistently throughout their whole glorious career.

I would like to encourage and highly recommend that everyone purchase this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of their own personal music collection. This is not just any album, but a true rare unique piece of Rock n' Roll history. This legendary compilation album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. What's more is that there is a Volume Two compilation album with more of CCR'S most sacred classic Rockers that I have to review at a later date so stay tuned.

In closing, with CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL already disbanded since 1972 due to management and record label conflicts and the untimely death of John Fogerty's brother Tom Fogerty on 6 September 1990, it now seems unlikely that a real CCR reunion would ever take place. However, there was a brief reunion with all of the remaining members and became CCR one more time. This historic reunion happened as a result of receiving the highest ultimate honor of being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in January 1993. With contract disputes and obligations resolved between John Fogerty and his old label Fantasy Records, Fogerty is now back recording on his old label again and bringing back the sound that made CCR the household name that they would forever be known for. With this in mind, Fogerty is adding more to the CCR legend with new tales and stories to make into new chapters in the life and storied career of one of the greatest Rock bands of all-time, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. So here's to you John, the late great Tom, Stu and Doug. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL LIVES. JOHN FOGERTY RULES. R.I.P. TOM FOGERTY, Born 9 November 1941, Died 6 September 1990. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Rock 'n Roll, Blues and Country Influenced - and fun too!.......2006-06-28

My first introduction to CCR was "Cosmos Factory," released in the dark ages of 1970. What a great introduction to CCR. Fully 7 of the 11 songs from that album are represented on this collection of greatest hits. CCR released 7 original albums, and though "Chronicle" includes 20 songs from those albums, someone later decided to release a "Chronicle II" that included another 20 CCR songs, including two more of the "Cosmos Factory" songs.
CCR had a very unique sound, owing in part to John Fogerty's unusual, yet very listenable, voice. CCR has been called rockabilly by some, but I prefer to see CCR as part of the diversification of rock music that led to the popularity of groups such as The Eagles. Yes, there is some influence of what was once known as Hillbilly or bluegrass, but there is just as much influence from rock and roll and country. There may even be a flavor of folk music.

Sometimes the music sounds almost like classic rock and roll, as you listen to songs such as "Proud Mary." Other times the sound is almost contemporary with the early 70s in songs like "Who'll Stop the Rain." Other times the music seems to transcend all genres in songs like "Up Around the Bend," which starts out like a hard rock song, and then reveals a country base in the harmonies and the lyrics.

Then there are blues-influenced songs such as "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and "I Put a Spell on You." "Run through the Jungle" has influences that might remind you of Jimi Hendrix, yet blues are also evident. The lyrics will recall images of the Viet Nam war. Another Viet Nam war related song is "Fortunate Son."

Occasionally CCR's lyrics create odd mixtures. "Looking Out My Backdoor" has lyrics that would fit well with many of the psychedelic songs of the era, yet is played with a country-rock style. These contradictions are part of what made CCR a great and novel group.

There are a couple of versions of this CD available. This version is a gold CD that some fans prefer when available. You may want to survey the versions available before selectin the one that best meets your needs.

I enjoy music that creates a trend without trying to do so. A true artist is one who does what they want to do for themselves. When they become successful, that is fine, but they do so on their own terms. CCR was such a group. This CD collects some of their better known songs, and is a great addition to any collection. However, please keep going after you've bought this one. You will find that there is a lot of good music left on their albums. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars so cool.......2004-01-23

this album is the best in this world for a man like me. i spend so mucht time on road and this album was my best friend in intro the years. i lost it(the album),and i miss it.

4 out of 5 stars Hurrah for CCR.......2002-02-01

It's hard to believe how good this album sounds when it was recorded so long ago. A lot of the tracks are monaural. CCR was a very simple band with no big band sound yet they could rock it with guitars bass and a scattered sax solo. These were simpler time and the music reflects it. Three cheers for this great group who gave us so much enjoyment.
