Remastered or Repackaged?.......2007-06-29

I've been putting off buying this album on CD until Columbia remastered it. However I was in Best Buy today and picked a copy of it up because the cover caught my eye. No longer was there the old Compact Disc logo down on the bottom corner of the cover, nor does the back state "Due to limitations of the Source..." that all the old Columbia cd's have. The spine of the cover also is not the white with red letters. It is black with small dark red print. In short, it seems that this was a re-issue, though nowhere on it does it say Remastered. I bought it and the CD itself has the vinatge Columbia logo that all the new remasters seem to sport. Reading through the booklet (another improvement over the previous CD) I found it states who produced the album originally but says nothing about a remastering. So, I can only assume that Columbia has updated its packaging but for whatever reason hasnt done anything with the sound. Surprising, considering what they've done with Bob Dylans catalog and even Leonard Cohens. You think there would be a demand for improved sound quality for an artist of his stature. Too bad...

The Best.......2007-06-05

Forget "Born to Run", and "Born in the USA", this is, with out a doubt, the best Springsteen album. Please listen, and see just how eerie, and great this album is.

Painful Pessimistic Perspective on America in the 1980s.......2007-04-07

This album is the most stark and musically spare album in the Springsteen repetoire. There are songs about unrepentant murderers (Nebraska, Johnny 99), biased cops (Highway Patrolman), gambling in New Jersey (Atlantic City), hard economic times (Used Cars), and a suicidal driver (State Trooper). The album ends with the cynical "Reason to Believe," a song about people in denial who find a reason to hope when all hope is gone.

The album is a powerful statement of pessimism during the Reagan era, made all the more clear by its spare instrumentation, haunting lyrics, and the vocals of Springsteen high above everything else. A few of the songs rock, even with their acoustic guitar and harmonica arrangements. A rewarding and rigorous record.

Somber, But Still a Reason to Believe.......2007-01-27

The story of "Nebraska" is well-known to Springsteen fans as he slipped this brooding, low-tech solo album in between two blockbuster sets with the E Street Band, "The River" and "Born in the USA". The characters here are reminiscent of "The River", but with an eye and ear directed back an album to "Darkness on the Edge of Town". For the most part, Bruce's vocals epitomize what my choir director means when she talks about singing quietly, but still intensely.

My favorite tracks are "Atlantic City", "Johnny 99", "Used Cars" (which I can relate to--our second car when I grew up was always a "junker"--and we couldn't dream of the winning the lottery to replace it), "Open All Night" (anyone who's driven on the New Jersey Turnpike at night can relate to it), and "Reason to Believe" (a live-action semi-hymn)--almost no intersection with those of the Amazon editorial reviewer, but I think that's testimony to the overall quality of the album. The title track sets the tone well, but it's just too dark to be considered a favorite. Still, five stars for a courageous, sincere and successful effort by The Boss.

What more can one say.......2007-01-05

As a child of the 80's I grew up on "Born in the USA" Listening to that always soothes me. So, when I came across this in my early twenties, I was thrilled. It is so dark and beautiful. Can't say I totally dig the whole album, but the songs on here that are good are so amazingly, insanely good. Now, Mum and I are enjoying the Seeger sessions - she even got in to see them in concert - that lucky lady!

An intelligent blend of melodic and heavy rock, Gretchen Goes to Nebraska is arguably King's X's finest album. It's more exciting than the followup Faith Hope Love, with the heavy opener "Out of the Silent Planet" (C.S. Lewis fans take note), and the hard rock "Fall On Me" and "Over My Head" (a single from the album). There are ballads as well, such as the beautiful "Summerland." The inclusion of the organ, the sitar, and the dulcimer in the arsenal of instruments adds a nice touch. Heavy metal fans may grow impatient with this one, but fans of melody-oriented progressive rock will definitely want to check it out. --Genevieve Williams

Gretchen, the sophomore effort by Doug, Ty and Jerry, proved that they had the licks, the lyrics and the guts to stick. And thank goodness. An all around fantastic album.

The first song, "Out of the Silent Planet" is monstrous, just gigantic, one of their best ever. Other standouts include: "Over My Head" which Doug later reveals was inspired by his lack of mother and father and a grandmother who raised him but never showed him love, "Summerland" pure and simple perfection, period, "Everybody Knows A Little Bit Of Something", "Pleiades" about the philosopher who was burned at the stake for saying the world was round. All other songs round out the album nicely and do little to detract from the truly great tracks.

9.0/10 Unbelievable album........2007-02-23

I am shocked that this band never got more attention than it has. This is the only King's X album I have but it is in my top 10 CDs of all time. It's ridiculously good. It took a few listens to really get into it but once I'd heard it enough times, I was hooked. No song is really bad and there are some great ones. Over My Head is ridiculously amazing and I'm surprised it's not a noted classic song along with Pianoman, Stairway to Heaven and Freebird. Summerland and Out of the Silent Planet are also fantastic. The way Fall on Me starts is awesome. The riff in that is one of the best although the rest of the song is lacking a little bit. Overall, I'd give this CD a 9/10 because it's not perfect but it has some incredible songs on it and it blows my mind that more people haven't heard it.

Still as fresh now as it was then........2007-01-09

I discovered King's X on "Head Banger's Ball" on MTV back in '89 with the 'Summerland' video. I think it followed a video by Nuclear Assault! Is that funny or what? Anyway, GGTN was mine the next day and would have been mine right then if the stores were still open. Man...What a great album by a great group that just gets better with every spin (of the cd that is). Add this to your collection and most of the cds in it will pale.

Awesome Progressive Rock from a very underated KING's X.......2007-01-04

Wonderful Hard Rock with great Vocal Harmonies reminiscent of "The Beatles". I like the Spiritul tone of the lyrics and Doug's powerful lead vocal. Ty Tabor is excellent as usual. I am definetly sold on KING's X!

One of the GREATEST Hard Rock Albums ever recorded!!.......2006-12-15

Not much needs to be added to the existing reviews. Only the fact that this is one of the most passionate, most powerful rock albums EVER recorded and I would put it in my top 10 hard rock albums of all time!! Why these guys aren't MUCH bigger than they are is one of commercial music's great mysteries!!! Guess it's a reflection on the sorry state of the modern music business!! And Ty Tabor is one of my favorite guitarists as well, as good as ANYONE out there but (unlike many, MANY others) knows when to hold back!!

Unfortunately, in my opinion, they have never equaled it though they are still one of the most talented bands out there. If you listen to rock at all, in ANY form, buy this CD...but it NOW!!

Very solid album.......2006-01-30

I listended to a few sound clips from this album and ultimately ended up buying it. It was a definitely a worthwhile purchase. I guess the singer that Rosh Rouse can most closely be compared to is Ryan Adams. I don't own any of Adam's albums, but have heard several individual songs off his various cd's. He has always been one of those artists that I felt that I should like, but just could not get into. My guess is that fans of Adams will surely enjoy "Nebraska," but maybe not as much as "Love is Hell," or "Heartbreaker." Josh Rouse's music is probably a little more mellow. He uses a lot of violin, some slide guitar, and a little piano that give the music it's alt-country feel, but somehow I feel Ryan Adam's music is more country-ish. There are some great pop songs here including "Dressed Up Like Nebraska," and "Late Night Conversation," and some fantastic slower songs like, "Lavina," and "Flair." Very catchy music with great hooks.

Just a little of what I needed.......2005-04-27

Being from Nebraska myself, I respect this guy's talent. I'm also a fan of acoustic music, so therefore, i liked this cd. One day, while searching the web, I came across Josh Rouse. I said, "Who on Earth is this guy?" I checked him out and pretty much started to dig what he was singing.
I really like Rouse's voice, it's unique and unlike anything I've ever heard. Some of my favorite songs on this album are Dressed up like Nebraska, invisible, flair, lavina, and reminiscent. Josh Rouse's music is, in my words, relaxing and easy to fall asleep to, which is a good thing. Check it out

There was a time when nobody besides Manfred Mann really bothered to cover Bruce Springsteen songs. All that changed once Born to Run turned the New Jersey singer-songwriter into a pop icon. Still, it was in the bleak character studies of 1982's Nebraska that he reaffirmed himself as a literate everyman steeped in the tradition of John Steinbeck and Flannery O'Connor, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. And that's the side of Springsteen that clearly appeals to Johnny Cash, Los Lobos, Hank Williams III, and the dozen other artists who participate in this remake of Nebraska. Chrissie Hynde, Ani DiFranco, and Deana Carter all deliver haunting performances, but as far as the men folk go, the album's most striking covers are "bonus" tracks that were recorded for but not released on Nebraska: "I'm on Fire" sounds even creepier with Cash's craggy vocal; Raul Malo brings out the pop sheen of "Downbound Train"; and "Wages of Sin," in the hands of Damien Jurado and Rose Thomas, shows Springsteen can be just as depressing as your favorite emo idol. Don't bother.......2006-09-10

Like many other reviewers, I am a huge fan of Bruce's Nebraska, and I was excited to hear these re-workings of his excellent songs. Unfortunately I have to agree with many others too. It just doesn't work. They should be great but just aren't. And, let's be honest, it's a tough ask to try and better any of Springsteen's performances on this album.

Somewhat disapointing.......2005-11-20

Despite many so-so reviews here I expected to like this disk more than I did in the end. Over-all it's not bad but is somewhat disapointing. My favorite by far is Dar Williams's version of Highway Patrolman, but the disk is pretty uneven in quality and can't be recommeded very strongly over all. Some of it is fine, but it might be better to borrow and copy just the songs you want.

What A Kick!.......2005-07-06

What a cool idea - to take an album the Boss never finished and--well, finish it off. I know some people love the stark simplicity of the original, but let's face it--they were basement tapes, demos that never received a proper production because Bruce was skipping labels. However, the makers of Badlands decide not to finish the album as they think Springsteen might have (that album might have garnered 5 stars), but to offer their own interpretations. There are some oddball choices here, like Chrissy Hynde and Dar Williams, but others, like Johnny Cash and Ben Harper, just flat out work. And I get a kick out of Son Volt's "Open All Night." Even though you can't really explain lyrics like "Hey ho rock and roll deliver me from nowhere" when Jay Farrar's vocal sounds like a barbiturated lullabye. But that's what's great about really good tribute albums: they help you look at a song from another angle, one you may not have looked at before. Often the original angle was the one you really wanted, but seeing the subject from a new perspective can only increase its dimensions.

Not a complete loss.......2005-05-14

There are some very strange interpretations of the origional songs, with the first few tracks being the hardest to tolerate. It gets better, eventually. I agree with another reviewer that the Johnny Cash doing "I'm on Fire" is the highlight of the disc.

Good finish after embarrassing start.......2003-03-04

It takes quite a talent when a tribute album can be made of just one piece of work. Such is the awesome body of work that is Bruce Springsteen's. And to have the songs so strong that, except in a few cases, they come across well shows how good this material is.

Doing covers can be tough for several reasons. First, you have to be at least somewhat musically adept, which is the case for everyone on "Badlands". Second, it would help if you at least had a vague idea of what the original was trying to communicate, which is not the case for everyone here.

One time in my life I actually listened to a Jim Nabors album. Yep, ol' Gomer Pyle himself can sing. In this listening, the voice was certainly there. But song after song, you got the idea that ol' Gomer hadn't the slightest idea what they were about, and the whole thing came out as an awkward embarrassment.

When I heard the first two numbers of "Badlands", this is what went through my mind, and thought this was going to be a train wreck. It starts off with Chrissie Hynde, normally a great singer, attempting the title. In it, she's basically just wording out the song, with very little emotion. Even worse was "Atlantic City", as done by Hank Williams III. The stark original is turned so much into a hillbilly hoe-down song I actually wonder if the artist wasn't making fun of the song. My heart was sinking at this point.

But then, it takes a big upswing. To the producers' credit, they do take the stark, minimal musical background on most of the original numbers, and keep the same spirit here. One could argue that the Los Lobos version of "Johnny 99" was a bit TOO rocking, but it sounds great, and on the original album, it was one of the more fast-paced numbers.

So while no number here matches up to the original, just about all of the rest are very good performances. They are done sincerely, are often very moving, and do approach the quality of the originals. Of the extra tracks thrown in, Johnny Cash's "I'm On Fire" takes a little getting used to, but he cuts this song down to the bone. And Raul Malo's "Downbown Train" gives the original a run for it's money.

It's hard to write an album review when you find yourself in love with certain songs. I would hold true everything the above reviews say about this album. "Northline" is brilliant but the absolute gem on this album is "Western Skyline" - perhaps one of the best "alt-country" songs ever written!!!

Utter Perfection.......2003-01-23

I loved Richmond Fontaine's previous two albums, especially Lost Son, their latest before Winnemucca. But with Winnemucca, Richmond Fontaine have outdone themselves. I must say that this is one of the best, most timeless, touching, and simply gorgeous albums in the entire "alt.country" genre, if not in all music. Willy Vlautin's lyrics are evocative, emotional, and show so much pathos for the type of person i like to call the 'sensitive ...-up'. These types pepper his songs...like the kid being driven by his brother to a jail for low-level offenders (you know, the type who choose to imbibe a substance other than alcohol and have to spend the rest of their life paying for our society's hypocrisy)...and ray thames from 'five degrees below zero' who pawned all his stuff and now has to live at his uncle's due to some imaginable addiction or mess up (as a female ray thames, i know exactly how miserable this kind of thing can be). They reach musical, not just lyrical, epiphany here too, from each tear-jerking pedal steel note to the wails of feedback on the second instrumental "Patty's Retreat", Richmond Fontaine have not gotten the kind of attention that many other past and present alt.country bands have gotten, and all I can say is its a damn shame. They make Uncle Tupelo sound coarse, Ryan Adams sound like a bratty punk, and the supposedly "seminal" Gram Parsons sound like the most overrated performer in the history of the genre. And to the few who may agree with this review, I'd suggest you check out Pinetop Seven, another wonderful and unappreciated 'alt.country' band. Their album "Rigging The Toplights" has the same kind of gorgeous fairground melancholy as "Winnemucca". Also try Hem's debut album, "Rabbit Songs" for a similar kind of beauty with amazing female vocals. If the three of them played LA sometime soon, it would be sheer musical heaven.

Who is Richmond Fontaine?.......2002-06-17

Shades of Jay Farrar and Matthew Ryan. "Five Degrees Below Zero" is worth the price of admission alone. Wish these talented guys out of Oregon would do some touring. Mr. V is a great writer, and I can just sit around all day reciting the lyrics. Great effort!!

Excellent alt-country!.......2002-06-15

This CD reverberates with feelings and memories of being isolated and alone, walking along a 2-lane highway, trying to hitch a ride to a new destination. This album is much different than RF's previous albums, and perhaps not as good as the amazing "Miles From", however, the music and lyrics catch the listener's ear and pulls him in like a good novel. As with most of Willy Vlautin's songs, all the songs here tell a story. Most of them entail normal people put though extraordinary circumstances. In "Northern Skyline", a man holds his friend on the side of the road after a car wreck, as he makes promises to the dying man of "glowing light and beautiful women" before he is finally "set free." "Northline" tells the story of a former skinhead girlfriend of the storyteller who had fallen into the traps of her other boyfriend's messed up belief system and disappeares from the narrator's life. Perhaps the most disturbing, yet beautiful song is, "5 Degrees Below Zero" in which the protagonist, in a fit of rage about his life and his surroundings, stops the bus he is on in the middle of nowhere so he can walk out into the freezing elements to his imminent death. RF is not only the engaging lyrics of Mr. Vlautin, but also the incredible pedal steel playing of Paul Brainard, whose simple, but tasty style completes the feeling of each song perfectly. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes eery, Brainard's playing infuses the music with a touch of old-style country and new-psychedelica. The only thing missing from "Winnemucca" is the country punk that it has shown on all of its previous releases. Most of the songs are relaxed, and they are meant to do so...still some of the bands finer moments in the past have been from its Minutemen or X influences.

I bought this CD following a "and if you liked these you should try this ..." link. Imagine my absolute delight when the CD came and the band line-up included Jeff Claus and Judy Hyman from the Horseflies. In fact, this is very much a Horseflies album, a little bit upbeat and a touch more electric, but exhibiting the style and innovation that has caused me to seek out as much of their original music as possible. All tracks on this album are very, very good. If you want to hear what an innovative blend of country and bluegrass can sound like, this is it. Buy it.

Boy With A Fish play introspective, atmospheric music that falls somewhere between folk-rock and alt.country. Their music is moody and intensely low-key, their lyrics off-kilter and at times superb: the title track is especially brilliant. I would think that those who like Freakwater, Hazeldine, or the Handsome Family would enjoy this as well.

Album Description

John Philip Sousa, known affectionately as "The March King", personified turn-of-the-century America, the comparative innocence and brash energy of a still new nation. His ever-touring band represented America across the globe and brought music to hundreds of American towns. This Naxos series of recordings aims to record Sousa's complete works for wind band, including the 136 marches and numerous other scores. Featured on this fifth disc in the series are The Atlantic City Pageant, named after the famous beauty pageant, Cubaland, a colorful suite whose three movements reflect the changing government of the Caribbean country, and The Diplomat, one of Sousa's personal favorites.

The "British reserve" sound of the Royal Artillery Band, to which some have referred, is, according to friends who actually heard Sousa's Band - the touring band, not the one on records - probably closer to the authentic Sousa sound than to the more "brash" sounds of today to which we have become accustomed. Sousa used cornets, seated on the outside right, from the first circle to the rear, facing the podium. This produced a more mellow sonority than we're accustomed to hearing. This balance is apart from matters of performance style which conductor Brion takes care of well. The music is played, as nearly as can be determined, the way Sousa actually played. For authenticity I heartily recommend all five volumes in this set.

I love Nebraska and I really want to go to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. As you can tell, I also enjoy Nebraska football. Everytime I hear "Hail Varsity!" I start to cry because Nebraska is my home, even though I live in Texas. This C-D explains Nebraska in songs and chants,& anyone who is a fan of Nebraska football, or is from there, should purchase this C-D. Nebraska Rocks!!!!!
