At this point in history, it's hard to know whether to call Black Sabbath the Godfathers of Heavy Metal or the Band That Wouldn't Die. Hard to believe that the band's original incarnation--Ozzy Osbourne on vocals, guitarist Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler on bass, and drummer Bill Ward--never released a live record in America at the peak of their initial arena-packing success in the '70s. This 18-track double-CD fills the gap, fleshing out the 1980 UK-only Live at Last with nine more early, previously unreleased live Sabbath tracks. If the sound quality is intermittent on the first disc (recorded in Manchester and at London's Rainbow in 1973), that seems only fitting from a band whose members--especially the inimitable Ozzy--have ridden their warts-and-all charms to metal Valhalla. But while that disc's early renditions of "Sweet Leaf," "Snowblind," "War Pigs," and "Paranoid" will more than satisfy Sabbath faithful, it's the newly released material (recorded in considerably better quality at various venues from 1970 to '78) that really underscores the band's dark, endlessly influential legacy. Ozzy's maniacal "Symptom of the Universe" would be enough, but it's only the prelude for the ominous, over-the-top 10-minute rarity "Megalomania," the thumping "Iron Man," a moody, tellingly jazzy take on "Black Sabbath," and the thrashing "Behind the Wall of Sleep." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars "PAST LIVES" CAPTURES THE GODFATHER OF HEAVY METAL MUSIC (BLACK SABBATH) IN THEIR ASTONISHING HEYDAY.....................2007-04-06

This is an awesome 2 cd set of awesome Black Sabbath performances. This cd set captures Sabbath in their 1970s heyday. The first cd captures a 1973 live performance. The second cd captures a variety of 1970s Sabbath shows. I get a kick out of when Ozzy Ozbourne introduces and performs songs from the soon to be released Black Sabbath Lp "Sabatoge". Little did the audience know "Sabatoge" would be a landmark Black Sabbath album. The performances are brilliant and make you realize what a powerhouse performer Black Sabbath was in the 1970s. Although at times "Past Lives" lacks great sound quality, the sound is good enough and if it is turned up loud you won't really care. This is a must have for any metal, rock fan. We may never see the likes of Toni Iommi, Ozzy Ozbourne, Bill Ward or Geezer Butler again. "Past Lives" is a trip back to the heyday of the Godfather of heavy metal..........

2 out of 5 stars The Past Is Better Left in The Past .......2007-01-24

I don't see the point in this album. Back in the days before Dio, before MTV, before the VCR many of us diehard Sabbath fans would've have killed for a live Sabbath album. A live album seems to make more sense when the performances are recent (look at the success of Kiss Alive, Made In Japan, The Tokyo Tapes) But years later it seems pointless. These are inferior performances to recent live albums which serve not other purpose than to demonstrate how far they've come and how far technology has come. I advise you to seek Live Evil, which kind of summarized Dio's Heaven and Hell/Mob Rules period of Sabbath (a big improvement for my money)or Reunion, which stands a testament to their longevity and recent tour with the original members. Most of Past Lives sounds like a bootleg. You've heard most of these songs done before and better, with the possible exception of Hole In The Sky and Megalomania from Sabotage. Trust me the Past is better left in the Past

5 out of 5 stars Black Sabbath Live.......2006-12-30

This is something i've waited on for a long time.
A legit Live Sabbath Album.
We all had Live at last at one point and that was good.
But now we got that and more, the 1970 Paris show (a few songs only) and a few Asbury, N.J songs from 1975 as well.
Altogether we got an excellent double live CD of Sabbath at there best.
I have all there stuff from that era and i just had to have this to round it off.
I hope they dig in some more and put out another double live CD.
Sabbath all the way

I have developed a renewed appreciation for Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi in particular. (Did you know he cut off the tips of his fingers on his left hand in an industrial accident and had to re-teach himself to play guitar?) Black Sabbath really was the fountainhead of all Heavy Metal. Few bands can claim to be as ground-breaking as Sabbath. I was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sound being that it's a live album and rather dated. All-around classic material.

5 out of 5 stars This was my Introduction to Black Sabbath .......2006-04-09

Up until this point, my main musical interests were The Beatles and Bob Dylan. One day, while I was rummaging through my dad's old cassettes, I found one labeled "Black Sabbath: Live at Last." I listened to it, and was instantly captivated. Within a week I purchased the CD "Past Lives" and my passion grew.
At that time I was very angry with the world. (like most thirteen year olds) Somewhat distraught, depressed, and searching for something. The "change the world" liberalism of many classic rock bands wasn't cutting it for me. Osbourne's vocals are filled with angst and rage. In their rendition of "Paranoid," one can truly picture him as being afflicted with the mental illness described in the song. I almost hold the version of Paranoid on this album in higher regard than the album version. It is so fast, so angry, it expresses the feeling of the song better than the single they released.
"War Pigs" sends chills down my spine. As does "Cornucopia" and "Killing yourself to Live." They are all attacks against a society gone horribly wrong, they use eye-opening imagery to convey their points. "Snowblind" and "Sweet Leaf" are two odes to drugs, still there is quite a bit of anger in Ozzy's voice.
The second disc is slightly inferior to the first. Only hardcore Sabbath fans can really enjoy the version of "NIB" present on the disc. I personally love the song, and I am somewhat fanatical about it. The bass line always gets me.
"Symptom of the Universe" is probably the best song on the second disc. Iommi's guitar work is simply amazing, Geezer's massive bass on "NIB" is to be appreciated, and Ward's drumming on "Children of the Grave" is praiseworthy. And let us not forget Osbourne's distinct, venomous voice, that gives these songs a feeling of doom, despair, and oddly enough, hope.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of B-Sides, EP tracks from TSOOL.......2006-02-06

This collection of B-Sides, single tracks and EP tracks (and some unreleased gems as well)will fill out your TSOOL collection. The only thing missing are some of the live tracks released as B-Sides otherwise you'd have just about everything the band recorded that's worthwhile here in addition to their essential albums. "Dow Jones Syndrome" and "Nobrainer" are the two best tracks from the "Gimme Five!" EP (although the entire "Gimme Five!" EP is represented here). We also get the tracks from the band's long out of print "Homo Habilis Blues" EP as well as the "Bonus Future" EP included with the 2002 touring edition of "Behind the Music". This two CD set doesn't really build the way that their album releases do (not a surprise given that these the EPs are scrambled and interwoven with various B-sides)so don't expect something as powerful as their last couple of albums. This release is still a delight for fans.

If you didn't purchase all of their singles/EP releases such as myself (hey, there's only so much $$ out there to spend on any band), this is a great double disc place to pick them all up (or at least the worthwhile stuff). While there aren't any duff songs on here some are better than others. For example, "James Last Experience" and the instrumental "Play Station Bordello" are petty good but don't quite hold up to the best material on their albums. If you're waiting for "Origin Part 2" this is a pretty good set to pick up and keep you happy until that album is released. The newer material is, for the most part, top notch and holds its own against the band's strongest material on this set.

A pity these guys didn't garner any Grammy nominations so that other folks might discover the talent from Sweden. Since their last album didn't sell as well as the previous one I'm not surprised they didn't get any nominations (and the Grammys have always been more of a Dog and Pony show anyway--what can one expect from an awards ceremony that equates "Best" with "Bestselling" and a body that gave The Beatles only a handful of Grammys--most of them AFTER they spilt up!). Rest assured that if you discovered the band with "Behind the Music" this collection is worthwhile picking up.

5 out of 5 stars TSOOL Continues With Consistently Rewarding Songs.......2005-12-22

The release of A Present From The Past from The Soundtrack Of Our Lives marks the second release of the year from the band. The earlier release, Origin. Vol. 1, in March 2005 was slated to be the first of a two volume undertaking by this longstanding swedish group. As it turned out, Origin. Vol. 1 was released in the Spring followed by the band embarking on a heavy touring schedule. Over the course of that time, the band reconsidered - placing the second volume on hold (for now anyway). Instead, some of those aforementioned tracks, B - sides, and rare EP tracks were collected for this 2 CD Set. The end result with this release is a memborable experience that gets better with every listening. However, the release A Present from The Past should not be viewed by fans as a collection to bide time until the band's next release. The collection of songs presented here stands on it's own merit and should viewed in it's entirety as a full album. Culled from various sources, the 2 cd set flows beautifully from start to finish. The emotional depth, moods, textures of sound and artistry attained is stunning. In fact, it's so amazing to the listener to consider that with this band's B - Sides they stand head and shoulders above other groups primary offerings. Newer songs like "New Messiah" and "Side Effects" mesh wonderfully with older material such as "Greatest Hit Providers" and "Were Gonna Get It Right" creating a cohesive, uplifting experience. A Present From The Past will not only serve the function for some as an introduction to the band but also confirm the fact to older listeners that this band is indeed very special. The songwriting abilities as well as the breadth of the quality material this band possesses in the end amounts to a listening moment that should be treasured.

      5 out of 5 stars Only 2 Review!.......2002-11-02

What! This record is great. Jack Brewer and Joe Baiza make one of the best poet/guitar noodler combos I've ever heard. They're both geniouses. "A Human Certainty" blows the studio version away. And this live document shows the early years as a struggling punk band, to the later years as a fully talented jazzcore. Awesome...awesome.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums ever.......2001-01-27

The sound quality is good; at least it's better than bootleg level. What really matters is the guitar sound Baiza gets on such tracks as "A Human Certainty," "I Have," and "The Giver Takes." Seriously, any true fan of metal guitar ala Iommi/early 80s Van Halen would have to like this. And of course fans of Black Flag and their ilk should have made this band at least as popular as B.F. The part in "I Have" where Jack Brewer screams "...many...' times" is the most explosive rock and roll moment I've ever heard, partly because it's quickly answered by a full bore ROAR from Baiza's axe.

If this review seems fragmented, emotional, and hasty, well, so are some of the best tracks on this album and so is rock and roll.

2 out of 5 stars For Diehard Fans Only.......2000-03-27

This CD is a must for all Saccharine Trust fans. However, those new to the band may be somewhat nonplussed by both the sound quality and the performance -- as this is a live recording. What it lacks in mixing virtuosity it somewhat makes up for in enthusiasm. The rendition of the classic "A Human Certainty" is commendable, and the fact that "An Effort To Waste" comes in two parts is thrilling. The original Pagan Icons (apparently now rendered Pagans Trust) would be a good place to begin, but you will surely want to complete your collection with this rare treat (originally released as a two album set). Enjoy! You can't beat the price.

5 out of 5 stars At Last, The Definitive Black Sabbath Live Collection.......2005-07-28

I initially bought "Past Lives" thinking it was a greatest hits collection. So when I listened to it and realized it was really a live album, I was disappointed at first. But I said to myself that I should listen to it anyway before I should voice my final opinion. Well, I listened to it, and I'm glad I bought it.

"Past Lives" is the definitive Black Sabbath live cd. Two discs filled with various live perfomances done at various venues in the early 1970s'. This is Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill at their peak. Just listen to songs like "Tomorrow's Dream", "Iron Man" and the 18 minute version of "Wicked World" and you will see why Black Sabbath is Black Sabbath. This is real heavy metal, people. These days, people just slap on a loud guitar with banging drums and bad vocals and call it heavy metal. That's not heavy metal. Sabbath is metal. Still don't believe me? Then listen to the version of "Megalomania" on dsc two. This performance, often bootlegged, is true heavy metal.

I highly recommend picking up "Past Lives" as well as the two disc best of "Symptom Of The Universe", which is a great way to get into Sabbath. Then get all the original albums and you're set.

5 out of 5 stars Pure and Beautiful, Raw Archetypal Grunge.......2004-10-07

All the concern about the sound quality on these CDs is misplaced. The sound quality on "Live at Last" was almost intolerable, but on Past Lives the sound quality is JUST FINE. If you aren't fixated on the technological aspects of the sound, you will be able to hear the sound texture, heaviness, and SOUL that come through crystal clear throughout this album. NOWHERE ELSE can you hear the early original brilliant Sabbath heavy funky sludgy live sound that, together with their seminal studio work, made them the legend that they are.

The recent Sabbath "Reunion" live album is very good, very solid, but at this point for me it does not rise to the level of a classic. Ozzy's voice is not as good on that album, and the music doesn't have the feeling of raw wild inspiration that pervades "Past Lives." To me, this distinction is not about which album had more technical mistakes (there are some in both albums). It seems to me that in the old shows on "Past Lives," the band was "living the life," and living the music, and you can hear that. It's similar to how other people can play Hendrix note-for-note, but it's not necessarilly going to sound like the real thing. This album is the real thing!

Another album to be compared to "Past Lives" is "Speak of the Devil." "Speak of the Devil" IS a classic live album of Sabbath tunes in the same league as "Past Lives." Brad Gillis, guitarist from the cheesy band NightRanger, played brilliantly for these shows. The sound is great, the whole band is part of the jamming, the passion is there. But if you want to hear what the real thing sounded like, you've got to check out "Past Lives."

Several reviewers have let their annoyance with CD1's having already been released cloud their judgement. Once you get over that, you will thank God that we have this album. The armchair metalheads who said they don't like live albums or don't think Ozzy should tell the audience he loves them or to stand up needs to see a real show or go back to easy listening. People like that will never be able to understand why we love Ozzy.

Just because I love Ozzy though, doesn't mean that I won't admit when his voice is cracking or he's forgetting lyrics. On "Past Lives" he occasionally changes or forgets lyrics, but his voice is strong with just the correct amount of rock-n-roll roughness (presumably related to drug use).

In summary, if you've forgotten that rock-n-roll has as much to do with moving your body, attitude, texture, spontaneous exhuberance, improvisation, soul, cutting loose, and having a great party as with melodies and digital sound qualities, this album might not be a good starting point for you. Maybe some Sex Pistols or Nirvana would remind you. But for him that has ears to hear, this is the old testament of live Sabbath.

4 out of 5 stars Good Live Album, But Reunion Is Better.......2004-02-19

This album was at first a great thing I thought. Finally! A life record from Sabbath! It's a dream come true! The set list is easily one of the best, but I do have one gripe about this album. This sound quality on the latter disc sux on a few of the songs, especially one of my personal favorites, N.I.B. But that was overlooked by the inclusion of the rare Megalomania, one of their best and most underrated songs. If you like Sabbath, you'll like this, if you can get over the slight lack in quality, but Megalomania, War Pigs, Wicked World, and Symptom of the Universe easily make it worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars WELL , AT LEAST WE HAVE THIS ONE!!!.......2003-08-22

Well ive just listened to this and for me it doesnt sound as awful as many fans say; the sound quality is not the best but its an interesting thing to listen to sabbaths songs recorded live at the time that sabbath was THE SABBATH. For the real fans it would be more of a document than a live recording, for those fans of paranoid or war pigs, its better to focus on a good compilation record, anyway the price of the record is worth the value, it entertains with the music as it does with the pictures and notes as well. For the real fans, i really recomend it!!!.

        Album Description

The controversial album of stunning and beautiful classical and renaissance styled instrumental music everyone's talking about.

Channeled thru by musician/composer Robert Kramer after a 3 hour hypnotic past life regression, to his amazement he discovers a previous existance as an obscure 16th century composer and lute player named Lucious Gray.

More incredibly, despite possessing no previous skill or training in classical music, Robert began to write song after song of beautiful and emotionally moving classical and renaissance pieces that defy explanation.

Hearing this beautiful album will make you a believer that we have indeed passed this way before. Listen and be touched forever by the Songs Of Past Lives!

5 out of 5 stars New music from yesteryear is gift to the ears and spirit.......2002-07-31

In today's world of screaming and loud rhythmic drum beats that vibrate one to the core, it is refreshing to have real music to listen to. Each song on this CD is unique to itself, but teams up with the others to make an extremely enjoyable ensemble. The music ranges between lighthearted happy, magestic regal, to fast and frenetic or deeply soul moving. The story behind the inspiration for the disc is certainly interesting, but the music is the reason to buy this very beautiful CD. Give yourself a gift that will last forever.
