Amazon.com essential recording

Funk 101, for sure. We may never totally understand how James Brown took his music from the earlier styles of R&B he assimilated to the feverish development of the harder, more modern sound of records ranging from "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" to "Say It Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud," but here's another chance for us to listen in awe. In addition to long versions of the period's cornerstones, Foundations of Funk offers an alternate take of "Cold Sweat" and live versions of "Licking Stick-Licking Stick" and "Mother Popcorn"--the latter achieving a meltdown that puts the Brown band on the same side of the street as Funhouse-era Stooges. 5 out of 5 stars One of the Best JB compilations.......2006-03-09

Truly a fine compilation and very nicely packaged. I like the CD being in the sturdy(!) slip-case.

The song choice is great. The Live Cuts are Killer. I have no regrets with this purchase!

Of the many JB comps I own this is my 2nd favorite (In A Jungle Groove is the first!).

5 out of 5 stars A wise investment.......2006-02-26

Ever pay for a James Brown album and within five minutes of getting it out of the wrapper you realized you were had? Ever heard James accompanied by a Casio keyboard recorded in a broom closet? Must be bad needing a quick album release to satisy some recording contract agreement James made to get a few bucks.

Well this is NOT one of THOSE.

This is simply a fabulous collection of greatest recording. It demonstrates why James was considered a genius. And his band was so powerful they could blow down walls. And make you dance, Man. And smile. And get funky RIGHT NOW.

A must for your next soul funk dance party. Put it on and EVERYBODY will get up off a that thing and bust a move. I guarantee it.

5 out of 5 stars The Legendary JB and the Incomparable Maceo Parker, It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This.......2006-02-22

Best James Brown CD that I've heard, extended recordings of everything, which gives his legendary band (featuring the incomparable Maceo Parker and Clyde Stubblefield) a chance to shine.

5 out of 5 stars This s*@t makes quadriplegics dance the mashed potato!!!.......2005-07-31

If you have only heard a greatest hits package or the same two or three songs on oldies radio, quit reading this and get your @ss to the cd store or just click the order button right now. This cd sounds like someone squeezed the jb lemon to extract only the sourest juice! Damn. I threw on this cd. Then I put some popcorn in the microwave. Bad idea. My microwave started doin' the "James Brown." Next thing I knew there was an explosion of funk all over the joint y'all!!! Even the damned dog broke out in a cold sweat when he heard this cd. I didn't even know he COULD sweat! Guess I got me a funky Jack Russell that needs a bath now.
I didn't even know that some of these songs were available with extended jams tacked on the end like that. And the live grooves will make the laser in your cd player burn a hole through the roof.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation of Blues .......2007-03-14

I don't give 5 stars very often, but this CD is deserving of it. From the outset I will say this is a multi-year compilation, drawn from many sources of Mike Bloomfield's catalog. If you a true blue died in the wool Bloomfield fan, you probably have all these tracks.

The CD starts out with 3-4 of Paul Butterfield's songs which featured Mike Bloomfield, the son of a rich Chicago industrial family who abandoned the wealth and dedicated his life to the blues without ever selling out to sell potato chips.

The CD then goes into a single Electric Flag song, which I think gave the band short shrift, but thats life in the compilation business.

It then moves on to 2 Super Session tracks, which will blow you away, especially Albert's Shuffle. For you purists out there, check out the Remastered version of Super Session which has this track without the annoying horns.

Then to the best part of the CD, which is Mikes work with Nick Gravenites and Mike's work at the Fillmore, previously only available in bootleg CD's albeit widely distributed. Carmelita Shuffle, It Takes Time and Don't Think About It Baby are the best tracks in the CD.

So sit back and enjoy the blues, played by one of the great masters of the genre--Mike Bloomfield.

5 out of 5 stars Essential blues.......2004-09-25

You would probably already know that Mike Bloomfield is considered one of the best and most influential white blues guitarist ever lived. Unfortunately, due to several circumstances, and mainly to his character (apparently he was not the kind of person you would get on easily together) and his life style, his musical legacy is spread across several different albums recorded with several different bands and several different solo efforts. Due to the above, even his playing has been wonderful (most of the time) but sometime not so good either. This collection, covering 5 years of his career, includes some of his finest blues recordings, some of which previously unissued gems. If you never heard of him, I believe this is the right point to start with. Hearing him playing the blues at a so young age for sure will make you thinking about what a major star he would probably have been if his life weren't ended so tragically. This is a magnificent collection of great blues that should not be missed by any serious blues fan.

5 out of 5 stars Mikey, We Miss You.......2004-03-21

If you liked Super Session, Electric Flag, or many other smokin' guitar WhiteBoyBlues bands, this CD is essential. B'Field is possibly one of the finest guitars of all time. This particular CD has a lot of incredible tracks, and very few mediocre ones. This one is a must for those of us who love a killer guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of great Bloomers.......2004-03-04

The early demos are not very indicative of what Bloomers did later but I guess I'm glad its here. The other stuff is great if this is the only Bloomfield album your going to buy. Otherwise I would just buy all the REAL albums and forget the "greatest hits" package.

5 out of 5 stars Mike played blues the way our generation heard it........2003-11-30

I recommend this to anyone who was a fan but didn't maintain a Bloomfield/Butterfield/Electric Flag collection. Bloomfield played blues with same attitude that most the young white guys then and shortly afterwards had: more notes, faster tempos, louder, racing ahead of the bar lines, and incorporating whatever other styles/scales struck him as interesting. A lot of us have settled down, and now prefer a older, more laid back style , but Mike's recordings will stand forever as a document of 'where our heads were at' in the 60's.

4 out of 5 stars Useful overview.......2005-09-27

John Mayall and his Bluesbreakers pretty much led the British rhythm and blues boom of the sixties and was a regular feature at the venues that were springing up to cater for fans of the music.
He had the knack of discovering talented musicians, especially guitarists, at one time hiring in succession relative unknowns Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. Other notable musicians employed here in an ever rotating line-up include John McVie, Aynsley Dunbar, Keef Hartley, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Tony Reeves and Henry Lowther. These were not merely hired hands, but integral members of the band, shaping and colouring the music within an expanding blues framework, under the guiding light and vision of John Mayall, himself no mean performer.
This 2CD retrospective picks liberally from this period in the latter half of the sixties including tracks from the key albums Bluesbreakers With Eric Clapton, A Hard Road (featuring some of Peter Green's bluesiest work), Crusade, Bare Wires and Blues From Laurel Canyon, the latter three all featuring Mick Taylor, as well as the Mayall solo album The Blues Alone.
It is most valuable, however, for including some hard to find A-sides, B-sides and EP tracks, such as three of four recorded for the 1967 EP John Mayall's Bluesbreakers With Paul Butterfield. Although primarily taken from Decca recordings, space has been found to include 3 sides with Eric Clapton recorded for the Immediate and Purdah labels (I'm Your Witch Doctor, Telephone Blues, Bernard Jenkins). Since the original albums are all in print, I would have preferred to see more of the non-album tracks here, such as Lonely Years (for Purdah) and Little By Little (from the Paul Butterfield EP), but this is a well-chosen and representative selection

4 out of 5 stars Highlights From John Mayall's Early Years.......2003-11-19

London Blues (1964-1969) is a double CD containing 40 of the best tracks from John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Mayall's voice is an acquired taste and his songwriting isn't always the greatest, but don't let that stop you from buying this collection. Guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor were members of the group at different times, who frequently made multi-intrumentalist Mayall appear to be only a sideman.

5 out of 5 stars The Supernatural.......2002-01-05

There are four words which told me this album was a must have.
The Supernatural. And what else?
Peter Green.
The Supernatural is one of a handful of instrumentals in the entire history of rock which will put you where you want to be.
The Supernatural.
Your search is over after all these years. Will there ever be a place on the planet quite like that?
KSAN radio in San Francisco, CA, 1967 to 1970. From 10 to 2 it was "Lights Out," with Tom Donahue and sometimes Dusty Street. It takes you back, doesn't it? Satori. Nirvana. Bliss.
Peter Green.
The Supernatural.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Mayall Compilation Available.......2000-10-08

John Mayall is still performing and recording in his late sixties, but he is not very well known in the US. His greatest claim to fame is perhaps his featuring Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor as lead guitarists before each of them went on to greater fame. However, Mayall has his strengths as a songwriter and arranger, and the sincerity of his crusade to bring the blues to a wider audience is undeniable.

If you are at all curious about Mayall, or are simply interested in hearing examples of Eric Clapton's best early work, this two disc set is the place to begin. Mayall's major achievements were recorded in the 60s, and his most enjoyable songs are included here, with the exception of the tracks on "The Turning Point".

Stones fans, those who like Clapton's blues work, and anyone familiar with the original Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green, will likely enjoy this set. First rate blues guitar, strong melodies, creative blues arrangments with extensive use of horns as well as guitar, keyboards, and harmonica --- you'll find them all here. A throughly satisfying disc from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars British R&B at its best!.......2000-04-21

What... no reviews for this superb slice of mid 60's UK R&B ?

Along with more rudimentary Alexis Korner and Graham Bond "Organisation", John Mayall's "Bluesbreakers" provided the catalyst and musical training ground for the UK R&B boom of the mid 60's.

Want to know where Eric Clapton's work with Cream and Peter Green's work with early Fleetwood Mac came from, then look no further. They're all here... Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Aynsley Dunbar, Keef Hartley, Mick Taylor, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Tony Reeves, Henry Lowther... the power-houses behind much of the UK R&B scene serving their time and establishing their reputations within the constantly changing "Bluesbreakers" line-up.

But these tracks are not just interesting "what did they do in the early days" add-ons... they're superb examples of precisely what this music was all about. John Mayall - a gifted, often under-rated singer and musician in his own right - provides the framework for his peers to explore and extend their musical ideas and, this album captures them all in great form.

Eric Clapton's ground-breaking guitar work on tracks such as "I'm Your Witchdoctor" (one of seven tracks with Clapton as lead guitarist) set the scene for his work with Cream and stimulated the "Clapton is God" graffiti that adorned walls and railway bridges in 1966. Peter Green's beautiful finger picking on "Sitting In The Rain" and bridge-bending guitarwork on "The Supernatural" (along with eleven other tracks featuring him as lead guitarist) represent blues guitar at its very best.

And... throughout it all, John Mayall weaves his special magic. "No Reply" co-written with Mick Taylor, who was picked out by the Stones to replace Brian Jones on the basis of his work with John Mayall as represented on this album, is quite stunning and there's more... so much more.

Along with "The Turning Point", an absolutely essential John Mayall album. If you're into this type of music then this is a "must have".

5 out of 5 stars A TIGHT SOLID BEST OF COLLECTION OF HIS EARLY YEARS MUSIC.......2003-11-19

If you don't want to plunk down $20 plus for the Mayall 2 CD set LONDON BLUES '64-'69 then get this solid 20 track CD! Mick Taylor, Peter Green & Eric Clapton are all featured on this CD which includes some of the best songs they recorded while with Mayall. Mayall himself hand picked these songs. Funny though... "Hideaway" is missing. For me being a die hard Mayall fan and guitarist who was nourished on his music and all his git great players music on this CD "Start Walkin'"(live with Mick Taylor on git BURNS!). "A Hard Road" (with Peter Green on git sizzles!) and "Parchman Farm" (with EC on git cracks the whip!). Enough said. Go buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Migration of the Delta Blues.......2000-06-20

This album is exactly what the title implies... how it all began. John Mayall was the first major white blues musician to interpret the delta blues. As England began to embrace American southern culture a blues revival began to occur in the states, so Muddy Waters and the likes were brought back into the public eye by Mayall and similar artists. This album, while not quite as complete as "London Blues" is every bit as exciting. The early tracks such as 'Bernard Jenkins' and 'All your Love' allow the listener the priviledge of experiencing a young, raw Eric Clapton developing into one on the best blues guitarist and a true journeyman. The track 'Double Trouble' is not as clean and polished as the later Clapton live version but the track is definatly more raw and powerful than Clapton's. Other highlights include 'The Death of J.B. Lenoir' and 'Suspicions'. For a glimpse of experiencing Mayall live check out the last track 'Start Walkin'. If you are a die-hard Mayall fan who must have it all, then get "London Years". If you are just a fan of Mayall or excellent blues or looking for a good place to start your Mayall collection, then this is the CD!

    2 out of 5 stars Not "The Best... 1964 - 69".......2000-04-26

Judging by the track listing this album pretty comprehensively fails to live up to its claim. While it contains some worthwhile tracks, the most thorough and satisfying compilation - by a long way - of John Mayall's work from this period is "London Blues 1964 - 1969".

If you really do want "the best" then save up and buy "London Blues"... a superb record that won't disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Blues history in the making. U.K.'s Godfather of Blues........1999-01-30

This is a beautiful collection and set of early and historical blues from a legend. Mayall's band was a launching pad for scores of brilliant musicians and this CD is a wonderful example of UK blues in the early 60's. John Mayall is a versatile instrumentalist and his vocal stylings are very original. I have followed Mr. Mayall's career from the early 60's and this is a super collection, a must for all scholars and music lovers of GREAT 60's popular music. This is a must for any and all collectors.

5 out of 5 stars This is perhaps the greatest CD ever.......1998-12-08

John Mayall is most widely known for discovering Eric Clapton and several other famous artist. And thus his fame has always been acheived indirectly, through the fame of others. However, I believe that John Mayal was far greater than Eric Clapton or any of the other musicians he discovered. This CD proves the fact. He is a very versatile musician. JOHN MAYALL KICKS ASS

4 out of 5 stars Worth the money?..........2007-04-28

What makes The Zombies so interesting is that they produced three oddly syncopated, jazz-infused and wonderfully different singles: "She's Not There", "Tell Her No" and the beautifully atmospheric "Time of the Season"... so good that no 60s collection is complete without them... plus two further "you really should have them" singles in "Whenever You're Ready" & "Care of Cell 44". Problem is how do you find them on the same CD. Well here's one of a couple of compilations that include all five, surrounded by several other equally distinctive tracks and a large amount of intriguing, but probably "destined to be played only a couple of times" stuff. Worth the money?... well that depends on how many of their "classics" you already own.

    5 out of 5 stars The Cuts.......2006-08-18

The Zombies were a thoughtful group of musicians in the 60s, who upped the scale of great pop music. Though they only made a few albums and a string of singles, they have a memorable collection with the tops of their era.

If you want the collection of the best of the best, I recommend this Singles Collection. If you want everything, I recommend The Anthology. The Odyssey and the Oracle is their art piece though you can get those songs on both these collections.

"She's Not There" and "Time of the Season" were their big hits.
Also, "Tell Her No" did well. These showed their vocal and musical complexity. Other songs that have great musicality are "She's Coming Home", "I Love You", "Remember You" (featured in the Otto Preminger film "Bunny Lake is Missing"), "She Does Everything for Me", "Friends of Mine" and "I'll Call You Mine".
I also recommend "Summertime", but you will find it on Anthology.

Colin Blunstone's vocals and Rod Argent's keyboard playing are the signature factors that make their music stand out. Argent, along with guitarist Chris White wrote most of their own songs.

The Zombies, which was a poor selection of a name for them and their music, were pop at a very high level - good musicians with thinker lyrics. They weren't really Mersey Beat, but certainly British Invasion.

For further interest, several years after they broke up, Argent came out with a band with his name and they produced the Zombiesque song - "Hold Your Head Up".

5 out of 5 stars A great break from the crap that's out now........2004-03-27

I'm a 15 year old canadian and I'm discusted with the music of my generation. I am a musician and presently play bass, piano, gutair, and I'm working on my drumming skills. The only thing I bother to play is this great music. The bass in all these songs is great and it contains great gutiar. Of coarse it isn't the most elaberate instramentals but when you add in the great vocals it's a winning C.D. It's a shame they didn't make it big but if your looking for a break from the modern pop crap that's out their this is the C.D. for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Pop genius.......2001-08-29

It all started with the soft voice and engrossing organ of "She's not there" lost on a tape of 60's Best Of. Digging a little in the hope of finding more nuggets I found this Singles Collection. What can I say? Pure gold and probably one of the most underrated 60s act, which is just plain incomprehensible considering the consistant qualities of the singles that the Zombies produced during their brief carrier. I guess they might have seemed a bit too nice at a time when other bands were busy adding Sex and Drugs to Rock 'n Roll (nothing wrong with that either), and competing for public attention with the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Yardbirds, etc. just can't have been easy. Still the Zombies' songs remain, pure pop gems.

3 out of 5 stars The casual listener should buy "Absolutely the Best" instead.......2000-12-09

It's hard to choose between "The Singles Collection" and the one disc "Absolutely the Best." TSC may be more than than a casual listener wants of this group. If you need all the forgettable B-sides here, you're a candidate for the "Zombies Heaven" box that has everything they ever did. On ATB you get three of the very best Zombies songs that are NOT on TSC: I Want You Back Again, If It Don't Work Out and Nothing's Changed. (That is, the best songs before their great "Odessey & Oracle" album - get the 30th Anniversary Edition!)
