Live at Wembley [Live]

Queen released several worthy live albums, but what makes Live at Wembley '86 special is the thrill of hearing the band recapturing its powers and its huge audience simultaneously. In the early '80s Queen put out their weakest albums, but their performance in 1985's Live Aid concert reminded them of what they were capable of and of how much their public still loved them. This extended live disc has it all--a nice selection of hits ("Bohemian Rhapsody," "Under Pressure," "We Will Rock You," and "Radio Ga Ga," among others), quality album cuts ("Now I'm Here," "I Want to Break Free"), displays of instrumental wizardry (Brian May's "Brighton Rock" guitar solo), and even some goofing on '50s and '60s rock & roll classics ("Tutti Frutti," "Gimme Some Lovin'"). There's a chilly premonition in Freddie Mercury's declaration that "we're gonna stay together until we die" but some comfort in the fact that his statement was essentially true. Wembley '86 is a fitting last hurrah. --Daniel Durchholz

Bigger-than-life and proud of it, Queen's tongue-in-cheek pomposity was ironically one of its most endearing charms. This double-disc live album recorded at the band's typically massive 1986 Wembley Stadium stand in support of its A Kind of Magic album is a perfect distillation of the band's overarching intentions--and virtually every '70s/'80s rock cliché punk rebelled against. The tracks may reverberate with the boominess of the punter's paradise they were recorded in, but it's an ambience that underscores the shows' propulsive, populist intent. Latter day hits like "Under Pressure" and "Another One Bites the Dust" may have their nascent club-beat savvy hammered into conformity with thumping rockers like "We Will Rock You" and "Tie Your Mother Down," but then this is as unapologetic as stadium rock gets. Mercury, May, Deacon, and Taylor are in top form throughout, shrewdly building the show into what, given its relatively late recording date in their career, might as well be an emblematic greatest hits live (especially on its brisk-paced second disc) experience. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Queen's last live concert.......2007-01-24

This was an amazing performance by Queen, and sadly the bands second last. It starts out with One Vision, and includes some of my favorite Queenhits of all time such as the rock opera masterpiece In The Lap Of The Gods, Seven Seas Of Rhye, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Now I'm Here. They also do a smashing rendition of Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Radio Gaga, Under Pressure and I Want To Break Free, and Is This The World We Created, among others.
Also included some tongue in cheek renditions of some old 50's hits like (You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care, Hello Mary Lou (Goodbye Heart), and Tutti Frutti.
I wish the band had actually sung Brighton Rock, instead of making it just a guitar instrumental. I know Brian May is one of the best guitarists ever, but Brighton Rock is actually one of my favorite songs, and that's whatI wanted to hear , not just the background guitar music to the song.
Peronally, I don't think it is quite as good as Live Killers.
Nonetheless it was a fantastic concert, by one of the best bands ever.

5 out of 5 stars Queen la mejor banda.......2007-01-03

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-09-25

This is an unbelieveable CD Freddie Mercury was a freekin genious. My favorite has to be the energy filled "Tie Your Mother Down" song without a doubt. This is a great collection of their best live work. And you'll like it even more if you buy the DVD I mean that. This is spectacular music and I highly suggest this CD to everybody. If you are a Queen fan buy this. If you are a music fan buy this. If you are the least bit cultured and understand that music is an artform and just not a way to get women buy this. If you underwstand that teen bop trash is not good music buy this. If you understand any of this buy this CD. You will love it and listen to it over and over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Energy Throughout.......2006-06-05

"Queen Live at Wembley" captures the band at its most lively, playing in front of 400,000 on July 11th and 12th in 1986. Supporting the music of their latest studio album "A Kind of Magic", Queen's 2 performances at Wembley were backed by outstanding visuals and a 160 feet wide stage (if you're looking for this, get the DVD). As a double live album, these performances stand up to any studio work done by Queen.

"One Vision" is an emphatic opener, with Brian May's heavy guitar and Mercury's powerful vocal driving the song the whole way. "Tie Your Mother Down" is performed in the same vain, as Queen quickly established a heavy rock sound early in this concert. Queen then assembles into a few short, excellent performances of two 70s classics ("In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisted" and "Seven Seas of Rhye) and the hard hitter off "The Works" album "Tear it Up". "A Kind Of Magic" is an excellent, extended live version and "Another One Bites The Dust" has strong energy. "Under Pressure" has one of Mercury's best vocals from the show. "I Want To Break Free" is altered from its studio counterpart to have May playing the synth sections and creates an entirely new sound. The "Brighton Rock Solo" is a 9 minute electrifying, raunchy guitar performance from May. "Now I'm Here" is excellent too, and equally heavy.
The acoustic tunes from the show are just as valuable, with Mercury bringing us down to earth in "Love Of My Life". Brian and Freddie follow this with another moving tune "Is This The World We Created...". The medley of tunes is a nice ode to some oldie tunes. "Hammer To Fall" is another good rocker, and Roger Taylor makes this one with his backing vocals. "Radio Ga Ga" builds amazing crowd energy, and that helps for a great transition to the closing of the show.

Overall, Queen gave two of their most astounding, heavy and beautiful shows at Wembley in 86 and it's all captured in this double album. For the visual aspect of the show, check out the DVD. Currently, there is alot of controversy surrounding the touring of Queen and Paul Rodgers. If you have some kind of problem with this new band, then check out this great live release, Queen Live at the Bowl, or Live Killers. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Another stellar live Queen album which is now Live at Wembley Stadium.......2006-09-13

Queen's Live at Wembley '86 was originally released in June of 1992.
The album was recorded on Queen's final tour with its original lineup at the now demolished old Wembley Stadium on July 12, 1986(the band sold out two nights and could have done a few more Wembley gigs but was not available so it ended at Knebworth Park (which deserves a release for pure historical value)).
Regardless, this is a pretty damn fine show featuring a good mix of (then) new songs(The pulsing opener One Vision, a killer A Kind of Magic, a stunning Who Wants to Live Forever and a great but short Friends Will Be Friends) and classic ones(Tie Your Mother Down, In the Lap of the Gods(revisited), a short Seven Seas of Rhye, Tear it Up with a teaser of Liar), Under Pressure, Another One Bites the Dust, the pulsing I Want to Break Free, Now I'm Here, the acoustic Love of My Life and Is This the World We Created, Bohemian Rhapsody, Hammer to Fall, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Radio Ga Ga, We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions).
Also, there was a little jam called Impromptu which showcased Freddie's dynamic vocal range and Brian May's 9 minute guitar solo called Brighton Rock Solo.
Also, the band decided to incorporate several 50's-era tunes into one medley (You're So Square(Baby I Don't Care), Hello Mary Lou(although Led Zeppelin did it better on How the West Was Won) and Tutti Fruitti(which was extended on the remastered version of Live at Wembley in 2003)) and also the 40s song Big Spender which was part of the first encore. Certainly it is a slicker package than Live Killers and better than Live Magic but not as great as Queen On Fire Live at the Bowl(which would be released in 2004).
The Live at Wembley '86 album reached #52 on the US charts in 1992 but would eventually go Platinum with a million copies sold in the US over time.
In August of 2003, to coincide with the DVD release of this show, Hollywood Records in the US and Canada re-released Live at Wembley '86 with a new title Live at Wembley Stadium with FOUR BONUS TRACKS including killer versions of A Kind of Magic, Another One Bites the Dust and Crazy Little Thing Called Love from the first Wembley performance July 11, 1986 and Tavasi Szel Vizet Arast from Budapest on July 30, 1986.
This live album is recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Hello again, my beauties!.......2006-07-29

This double CD set features a Queen concert recorded in July, 1986 in England. Queen was not popular in the US anymore by this point, but they were still enormously popular in most of the rest of the world, so much so that they were able to fill a football(soccer) stadium. The concert lasts one hour and 50 minutes. It is a good concert, but not Queen at their best. Freddie Mercury's voice was not what it used to be, due to years of smoking. Sometimes he doesn't bother to sing at all, and lets the audience sing the lyrics, which must have been fun for the people in the audience, but isn't much fun for us. But it's still a pretty good concert, and Queen fans should enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Best rock recital.......2005-10-06

If you see my reviews you will discover I like classical music but also a bit of other genres. So for a "classical" like me it is more difficult to appretiate this type of music. An among all rock artists two gems arise above the surface: Beatles and Queen. I mean: many people are not "hard" rock fans. Tell someone who listens just the radio and the hits of the moment to remember something of the stones? Forgive my ignorance but ... will he or she? Then begin to sing he or she "friends to be friends", "love of my life" , "Bohemian Rapsody" or "We are the champions" and surely will remember. For Queen had that unique sense of artistry that made them classics: melody, variety, personality, and trascendence (I still am amazed at the vocal complexity of Bohemian rapsody, coming from a non-classical composer).
What we have here? their last great concert on CD. Perhaps not in best form (Mercury it is not in his vocal prime) but you will listen here to
1- the frisson of a live concert, like other live albums
2- the great benefit is that is a later product than "Live at the Bowl" or "live killers" so you have here all the great hits in a live recital (of course "show must go on" was not composed yet).
To sum up: for Queen fans it is a matter of dispute if it is their best or not; for the begginner like me simply THE way to introduce oneself to Queen (or perhaps Rock) universe.

3 out of 5 stars The worst period.......2004-12-14

While not Live Killers (Queens best live album) this album is not Queens worst live album, that honor falls to Live Magic but this is no Live At The Bowl certainly. The mid 80s Queens final period Live was their worst. Smoking had destroyed Freddies vocals and the band were playing simpler and with more of an offstge/onstage musician and less energy. Their talents were therefore undermined unlike the 70s and even early 80s. Small wonder they stopped touring.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had a chance to see Queen "live".......2004-10-26

I was never a huge "Queen" fan growing up but as I got older I learned to appreciate this band. We all know the "hits" as we here them on the radio everyday. But, the "live" show? This is an excellent cd release and puts no doubts that Queen could rock any size stadium from start to finish. Highly recommended!

This whole 2 disc set is worth the money from the extras to the bonus disc.Beyonce knows how to work her way through this whole thing and it shows very well!I suggest you buy this.

5 out of 5 stars I disagree with these other folks.......2005-06-12

Beyonce showed a prime example of what it means to be a great entertainer. It's not one boring moment. The themes and choreography keeps your undivided attention. It's an excellent tool, for those who are aspiring artists. Really good bonus extras too. If you don't like Beyonce anyway, then you shouldn't bye this because it will only cause more hateration in your blood, 'cause she turned it out vocally, theatrically, and dance wise!

3 out of 5 stars She is OK.......2005-03-26

I like Beyonc enot necessairly for her songwriting skills or the fact that she makes everything about her but for her singing.I love her range (the way she can go so high ang low and do all those runs.Sometimes she does overkill it by screaming all over the stage and all..But this DVD is good. She has some nice singing and performances on this DVD.If you are a fan you should buy this if not keep on MOVING!!!!

3 out of 5 stars No surprise here.......2003-06-11

Suprising to me that so many folks don't know ELO used background tapes during the live shows. It's obvious during the sonic transition from 'Standing In The Rain' to 'Night In The City', when the band starts to actually play live. Tapes are used in varying degrees throughout the performance, blending with live playing, and it's almost impressive how they were able to pull it all off. Their front-of-house sound guy must have been working his tail off mixing all of this! Still, they should have stuck to doing only songs they could actually perform, and they had the talent to do it, since they pulled off Mr. Blue Sky, and Telephone Line, almost entirely live. My biggest gripe is that the cello players are not in the mix at all. The strings are all taped, and these guys are actually playing...! Watch their hands, there's no doubt they know what they're doing!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite classic.......2003-02-22

I remember buying the DVD and ordering the CD at the same time for my collection, I was pumped. Then I was nailed down by standing in the rain. Did they play a tape and lip-synch it? or did they actually sound just like track 10 on Out Of The Blue. The sound quality could've been wayyyyy better. I had fun listening to it and I liked it, but Winterland is more powerful.

1 out of 5 stars HUH?.......2001-06-13

I just picked up ELO's ZOOM, the first ELO release in 15 years, and was so excited about it while I was in the store that I picked up this CD too, anxious to hear classic live ELO at a time when the band was at the peak of its powers. Then I put in this CD and wondered why they bothered recording it. Talk about cruddy sound! I should've just stayed with my "Out of the Blue" CD because that's about all this is, amazed that they must have been lip-synching to it because this CD has that tin-can sound like it was recorded off of some distant PA system.

I'm a big ELO fan but I feel like "I was robbed" on this one. An extreme disappointment.

2 out of 5 stars THE SOUND IS AWFUL.......2000-03-05

I REMEMBER THE CONCERT TAPE THEY MADE IN 1978. I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS DISC. THE MOMENT I PUT IT ON, THE SOUND WAS AWFUL. I COULDN'T ENJOY THIS DISC. BEING A BIG ELO FAN I WOULD RECOMMEND THE WINTERLAND '76 SHOW 5 STARS, AND THE NEWLY REMASTERED "THE NIGHT THE LIGHT WENT ON IN LONG BEACH".

2 out of 5 stars Heartbreakingly mediocre.......1999-03-31

I had such incredible anticipation and expectation for LIVE AT WEMBLEY '78. This was to be the ultimate ELO live album, recorded at the ultimate ELO concert at a point in time when ELO was quite possibly the most popular band in the world. Imagine my shock when I played this CD and discovered to my dismay that, unlike the superb LIVE AT WINTERLAND '76, this one sounded like it had been recorded in a tin can. The audio is muddy and uneven. It's like a bootleg, but without any of the charm or energy. Compounding the problem is the fact that ELO used pre-recorded backing tapes on some of these songs. In fact, at times, it seems like those pre-recorded bits are all that is playing. ("Standin' in the Rain" is the worst offender.) "Showdown" is a notable exception, sounding very "live" and fresh, and the band actually jams a bit. "Mr. Blue Sky," "Do Ya," and "Roll Over Beethoven" are great performances, marred again by terrible sound. Tragically, "Livin' Thing" sounds like a karaoke in hell...this song, which is arguably one of the top 5 songs ELO has ever done, is excruciating to listen to on this particular album. How could such an historic concert be so poorly recorded? ELO deserves so much better. The aforementioned LIVE AT WINTERLAND and even the oft-derided THE NIGHT THAT THE LIGHT WENT ON IN LONG BEACH are dramatic improvements over this mess. Don Arden and Eagle Rock Entertainment should be ashamed for presenting ELO in such a poor fashion. I cannot say how much it breaks my heart to have to give such a negative review.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not Great.......2006-09-30

This particular live album was not authorized by Level 42. Polydor, their old record company owned the rights and released this even after Level 42 had left them for RCA.

The production quality on this album is terrible. It sounds almost like a bootleg, although it was probably recorded from the mixing board. There is no nuance of sound, every insturment bleeds over every other. You cannot hear the backing vocals.

One saving grace of this recording is the wonderful rendition of "Lessons In Love".

For a much better example of Level 42's live performance, I suggest "A Physical Presence" or the "Live at Wembley" DVD.

5 out of 5 stars energy.......1999-12-25

I really enjoyed this album. Level 42 is one of the best live bands ever. A shame they split up. 'Live at Wembley' has a concert-energy hard to find these days. A great album !

5 out of 5 stars Great collector's album.......1999-08-07

This album is a must for any Level 42 fan. Although it is a compilation of some of their biggest hits, the album has a whole new level of energy because it is LIVE. I have a great respect for bands that sound as good live as they do in a studio. Wish I could've seen them in concert--I discovered them too late!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Level 42.......1999-08-01

The most overlooked album from the most overlooked band. Will never get the respect they deserve (at least in the States) but true fans know that they are great live, and this album proves it.
