Customer Reviews:
Title Track Rocks but not much else.......2007-07-12
I love the Title Track but I think that the rest of the CD is plain and has no punch. I might have overlooked one or two other songs that are decent on this CD but really, the only reason to buy this CD would be for "Never Say Die"
They sure say 'Die' a lot on this album!.......2007-06-28
I guess that was a tongue-in-cheek album title considering the word "die" is sung in one form or another in a few songs on the album. Anyway...Old Geezer's 5-star review nailed my sentiments for this album perfectly, though I'll give a more restrained 4 stars. I am not particularly a Black Sabbath fan. I used to own Master of Reality a while back and I did enjoy it, but I found this album only by accident in my older brother's library one day many moons ago. It immediately grabbed me back then with all it's fantastic hooks, and it has remained a deeply satisfying album to listen to over the years as my musical tases have greatly expanded. I love the varied textures and the copius good guitar licks. Best of all, the vocals are very powerful both melodically and harmonically. I only give 4 stars to an album that is consistently decent for the full duration. There are a couple of less interesting tracks here, but overall the album is a blast from start to finish. Great listening!
PS - Fer cryin out loud, Air Dance is a dang good song...there's nothing wrong with Black Sabbath throwing in some softer music lines for a little relief!
The one that polarizes Sabbath fans.........2007-05-29
I love reading reviews of this album. Either it was the worst album or one of the best depending on what aspects of Sabbath one most admires. They had moved far far away from the detuned sludge doom of the classic early albums. But in in 1978 no one wanted to hear gloom and doom. Sabbath took a risk and tried mixing many different influences; more emphasis on songs than riffs, some keyboards and a little jazz fusion. The production is a bit boxy and thin in places, especially guitar and drums. But I think it is nevertheless a brilliant album, and "Johnny Blade', "Junior's Eyes" and "Shockwave" are among their best. Fans of metal, bless em, are typically not the most musically adventurous and you put in some jazz influence and non-riff oriented songs and they flip the f#% out. The musicians in Sabbath all played jazz and nothing is more Sabbath than throwing some in. And Bill Ward's vocal on "Swinging The Chain" is fantastic. I love this record. It is not typical Sabbath and was not intended to be. No other record before or since has ever sounded quite like it and for that it will always have a special place for me. I found it far more interesting than "Techinical Ecstacy".
The title says it all . . ........2007-05-10
Technical Ecstasy was a grim hint of things to come if Sabbath didn't pull out of their tailspin. Unfortunately they didn't nor did they decide to call it a day before releasing the ill-fated Never Say Die. It's an ironic and sad end to the original lineup of a band that was the benchmark for an entire genre of music and who inspired countless bands that took their vision to the next level and beyond. Granted, it has its moments. The title track is the most engaging song on it, followed by A Hard Road and perhaps Johnny Blade. The overall flavor of the album, however, is one of contention and misery. Compared to everything that came before it, Never Say Die is uninspired, directionless, and difficult to enjoy given their auspicious history. If you're a diehard fan, there's probably enough here to make it worth the purchase. If you want to remember Ozzy's tour with Sabbath in a more charitable light, consider Technical Ecstasy their last album (I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt) and leave this one in the cutout bin.
The Album That Killed The Original Lineup Of Black Sabbath.......2007-04-16
Ozzy said that he was ashamed of this album, that it took so frigging long to make Never Say Die! that the entire vision of the album was lost. He's not far off. Drugs! Alcohol! Ego-Demons! The War was on! Sabbath was in full-scale shambles. During the recordng sessions for Never Say Die! Tony Iommi would lock himself away in a room to do cocaine all day, only to emerge at night to record his musical parts by himself. How's that for a tight, nuclear band? Never Say Die! gets three stars simply for two songs. One is the title track and the other is Johnny Blade. Everything else is far to the left or far to the right. Let's check out the track listing:
Never Say Die - The final classic Sabbath tune with Ozzy at the helm. A solid rocker. Clean. Neat. Metal!
Johnny Blade - Future Ozzy keyboardist Don Airey gives us a peak at the diection Ozzy's solo career will take in this killer tune. I don't know why, but this song is catchy. A personal favorite. Ozzy sounds alive again after the butchery that was Techncal Ecstasy. Awesome.
Junior's Eyes - Starts off like a mellow lounge jam. Very low key. Ozzy belts it out here. The riffs start to flow. Not a bad tune. Teenage angst song.
A Hard Road - Straight-ahead rocker. Kinda light for Sabbath, but what's new. Good, catchy chorus. A bit simple.
Shock Wave - The opening riff is very promising, very hard and Iommi delivers it with passion. The lyrics are kinda mixed and that detracts from making it memorable. Sounds kinda like Sabbath trying to be Kiss. Sounds like something from The Elder.
Air Dance - Good intro riff and then it slides into piano lounge music with over-delayed Ozzy vocals. Boring. Don Airey is good. But we didn't buy Sabbath to hear the hired keyboardist, right? Dragging. Is this Sabbath or Tony Orlando and Dawn?
Over To You - Iommi had some great riffs going on but they sounded mechanical and reheated. The songs start blending together into the indistinguishable and that ain't good. Ozzys vocals are too high and phased out. They did that far too much in the later Sabbath years. Thought it sounded eerie and haunting. Probably hid some of Ozzy's setbacks as a singer. Hmmmm. This song is boring. Over to you. What can I do? Exactly!
Breakout - Uh....What the f*ck is this? Are we in a Jazz Bar for heroin addicts? Or is this supposed to be a Black Sabbath album? I don't know where this saxophone-laced jam came from, but it should have stayed there. Unreal.
Swinging The Chain - Bill Ward gets the last laugh on the last Sabbath album with the original lineup. And we're sooooooo sorry. The worst progression change in rock history? Close. What is this tripe?
The end of an era. A year later Ozzy would piss off ringleader Tony Iommi with his missing stints and his drunken lateness and that would be it. Iommi would employ Ozzy's best friend, Bill Ward, to do the dirty deed of firing Ozzy as Sabbath's singer. We should thank Iommi forever! Not only does tha open the door for Sabbath: The Dio Years, but it also gives us Blizard Of Ozz, the greatest heavy metal album of all time! Ozzy and Sabbath will fight publically for years to come, but Never Say Die! was not the way the most influential metal band of all neeeded to go out. Blasphemy.
Deal with it!

Vastly underrated.......2007-04-05
If you can stomach the sounds of the 70s, then you will like this disc. A bit disco-like? Yes. A bit outdated? Yes. However, I can't help but to thoroughly enjoy the winners, such as "Yahweh Love," "Morning Star," "Praise Ye the Lord," "Father of Lights..." This CD kicks up plenty of nostalgic old-time feeling.
If you're not a rabid Petra fan, then maybe you can afford to miss this album. I personally find it irresistible, and though I already have 16 Petra albums, these two stand out.
Never say die.......2006-12-24
This Cd is two different Albms Never Say Die & Washes Whiter than. The never say die part of the Album is great rock but the other Album does noes not rock at all It is not good at all. buy iot for the first half of the cd.
Lousy Christian Rock.......2006-02-09
I used to like this record when I was in Junior High School some 25 years ago. Now I realize that Petra was always a second rate rock band, that only sold records (or cassettes at that time) because they were sort of pioneers in this "Christian Rock" niche market. Basically it was rock music for way uptight born again Christian people who felt guilty listening to "secular" rock music, so they would buy this instead. If you were born 40 years ago, are a religious fanatic and are still in Junior High School, you might like this album.
Classic Petra!! Great guitar work!!!!.......2003-11-29
[MY RATING: 4 1/2 STARS]
This was the album that finally brought this pioneering Christian rock band to a level of musical and lyrical sophistication that could compete with the best of the secular rock bands. Many listeners will be familiar with some of these songs from later hits compilations such as "Rock Block," but you should really get the original album to hear the songs in context with lesser-known songs.
"The Coloring Song" opens the album with a beautiful and poetic devotion, which makes allusions and allegories inspired by colors. The vocals, organ, acoustic guitar, and mixolydian mode give the song a refreshing, folklike flavor.
The next two tracks "Chameleon" and "Angel of Light" showcase some outstanding electric guitar work and fierce vocal performances by Greg X Volz, whose voice has a more gospel / soul orientation than his successor John Schlitt, who has more of a hard-rock voice.
"Killing My Old Man" was a controversial song because on the surface, many people took it as a horrible ode to patricide (instead of a song about the biblical admonition to crucify our old selves), and Petra's label actually didn't let them release this song for a few albums. It's a catchy tune.
"Without Him We can do Nothing" closes out side one with a powerful, rocking praise number. Exhortation at its best.
Side 2 is a little weaker than Side 1. "I Can Be Friends with You," and "Father of Lights" are okay, but nothing special. The same could be said of the title cut, although its lyrics are very encouraging and positive, and the guitar hook is admirable.
"[Too Late] For Annie" is a well-known song about a girl who commits suicide because she feels that nobody cares (the message being that Christians could have told her that Jesus loves her, cares for her, etc., and her untimely death could have been averted.) Whether or not people liked the song or its message, it challenged listeners- and with unsentimental realism- in a way that CCM had seldom done before or since.
"Praise Ye the Lord" closes out the side with the same rock-solid praise of "Without Him We Can Do Nothing."
I heartily recommend this album to any fan of Petra (or Kansas, or 70s progressive rock for that matter). You'll enjoy it.

Customer Reviews:
Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Recorded onstage at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in January of 2000, Waylon Jennings's Lucky Dog debut revisits "Amanda," "Good Hearted Woman," "Waymore's Blues," "Never Been to Spain," etc. Wife Jessi Colter even reprises her biggest hits, "I'm Not Lisa" and "Storms Never Last." But don't dare mistake this collection as mere nostalgia. The title says it all. Given the 62-year-old Jennings's well-known health problems in recent years, these powerful, charismatic performances reflect an almost Lazarus-like renewal that begins with the opening number, Tony Joe White's "Closing In on the Fire," and doesn't end until the final notes of "Can't You See." Jennings holds his own in duets with stylistic disciples Montgomery Gentry, Travis Tritt, and pioneer new traditionalist John Anderson, all of whom have to hustle to keep up. In the end, one tune truly sets the tone: White's inspired "Goin' Down Rockin'." As Waylon sings the chorus, "If I can't go down rockin' / I ain't goin' down at all," he clearly ain't kiddin'. That alone is cause for celebration. --Rich Kienzle

Good, but should have been better.......2004-10-31
This is really amazing to me. Waylon in 2000, with the same strong voice and same awesome guitar playing that he has alwasy been known for.
But, dadgum, why did they need to put Montgomery Gentry, John Anderson, and Travis Tritt on it??? The guests in no way add to the mix, if anything, they completely take away from the song.
This would have been an excellent live set, Waylon was inspired on this night, the sound is crystal clear, Waylon's guitar was loud and up front.
Mabye one day, they will realease the entire concert, which the guest's didn't intrude on.
Waylon Comes Full Circle.......2004-01-11
I don't take criticizing Waylon lightly. I own just about EVERY item he has recorded, literally. This CD is worth buying for the simple fact that it is his last and for that we are all very sad but if you are a hardcore Waylon fan, this is not the CD for you. If not for his incredible talent, this CD would be horible. Waylon comes full circle. After leaving Nashville and inventing his own sound, here at the end, he returns with a horn section? Travis Tritt? Recording Dobie Gray's Drift Away? Let's say its a long way from Waylon Live and The Restless Kid Live at JD's. The raw Austin sound is gone and the slick country of today invades. If you listen to his music and miss him daily like I do, this CD will not do the trick.
Awesome!.......2003-08-11
What wonderful talent. This CD has several artists worth listening to from Travis Tritt, John Anderson, Montgomery Gentry and what a talent the lady is who sings with Waylon on "Never Been to Spain", "Nothing Catches Jesus by Surprise" and "Drift Away". Now, SHE really needs to get her own thing going too. I highly recommend this CD as a collection of music you will NEVER hear on the radio.
Waylon's Last Album--How Hard is That to Say?.......2002-09-22
I've been a Waylon fan since I was just a little brat listening to Waylon's "Greatest Hits" on my brother's 8-track player. So the words "Waylon's last album" are harder than hell to say. But this is it, and if it has to be the last one at least it is a befitting coda to one of the most innovative careers in country music. Waylon kicks ... on this CD, recorded live over two nights at the Ryman Auditorium in January 2000. He's joined by superstars like Travis Tritt and Montgomery Gentry and he outsings 'em all. From the bluesy opening number, "Closing in on the Fire", to the last song, "Can't You See", which Waylon did here more like the Marshall Tucker Band original than his own 1976 hit version, Waylon was in top form, the booming baritone clear and powerful. Why the hell can't some of the young country punks have voices like Waylon? Anyway, I think the new, original songs on this CD are its best tracks, including the title song and "Goin' Down Rockin'". Yeah, Waylon, you sure as heck went down rockin', and we will all miss you. Hearing this CD makes me sorely regret the fact that I never got to see Waylon live. Waylon is gone, but the legend remains. This CD is proof that it always will.
Waylon Jennings passed away today............2002-02-14
I can't believe how awful I feel. Waylon was a living legend, that's for sure, but he was so humble about his place in the world. I had the good fortune to seem him live in concert last year, and he had lost nothing from the vitality he had shown on his records over the course of his career.... If you haven't heard this, you are missing out on what will stand as the last phase of Hoss' career. His band is tight, Waylon's vocals are cooking, and the guest stars are there to pay homage, like John Anderson and Travis Tritt. And, folks, the horn charts on this album are hot! I love a good horn section, and Waylon got him one of the best. It has a gripping, live feel to it. Just listen to that opening track and you will hear what I mean!
With this cd, you can pay a little visit to Waylon for the rest of your life. Just turn the lights off and shut the door, put this cd on and you are in the audience with Waylon and there ain't much better in the world at that moment. God Bless You, Hoss!

Excellent ... but ..........2007-02-07
As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)
Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.
But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.
