YET ANOTHER CALLAS COLLECTION.......2006-02-08

I find that I'm beginning to agree with Herbert Breslin, who wrote in his book "The King and I" (which deals with his years as Pavarotti's manager) that "EMI has managed to convince the public that Maria Callas is still alive". Undoubtedly, EMI has made a fortune on Callas -------- complete operas, live recordings of operas, recitals, previously unpublished arias, and the like ------- and is showing no signs of slowing up promoting her recordings. There is no other operatic artist whose recordings are being promoted and marketed the way Callas' are. Obviously, the fascination continues. Is all of this warranted? Obviously, to judge by the sales of her recordings, most definitely "yes". Callas the artist is represented in this collection with arias and scenes recorded in different times of her short but spectacular career. The items recorded in the early and middle 1950's are vocally more secure than those recorded after 1960. What IS incredible are the different colors and hues that Callas had in her voice ---- she comes off as kind of an operatic Lon Chaney ("Man of a Thousand Faces")and manages to forge her imprint into virtually every item on included on this disc. What other soprano - living or historical---could sing such a wide repertoire which incorporated so many different vocal styles? This alone is reason to value Callas ------- as well as for her brains and incredible musicianship. Certainly we have hard more externally beautiful voices, but virtually none of them have had the sheer individuality of Maria Callas. This collection is certainly a great place to sample her art. I warn you ---- her art is addictive.

GREAT VALUE - EXCELLENT COLLECTION STARTER.......2006-03-30

This collection was given to me as a Christmas present, and at first I wasn't to sure the quality would be as high as the giver had hoped. But! I was so impressed by the recording quality of the first 8 symphonies and Missa Solemnis. The piano concertos and other pieces were alright, but nothing to get too excited about. The Ninth Sympony was also alright, but I already owned a far superior recording that I prefered listening to. As for the first 8 Symphonies I was pleased with their overall sound. At no point in any of the tracks was I confronted with poor playing, poor tempo, or anything usually found on budget labels. As for the MISSA SOLEMNIS, this is one of the BEST recordings of the mass that I've ever heard. It was recorded live by Rudolf Barshai, and I feel like it is a recording often overlooked. In historic form, Barshai uses a boys choir for the soprano and alto choral sections. The soloists sound great, but the orchestra sounds even better (along with the basses and the tenors!) Usually I would shy away from a live performance, but Beethoven's use of sheer volume eliminates any of the 'stray coughs' and 'rustling' associated with live performances. IF for nothing else, buy this set for the mass- even if only to give as a gift to a future or budding fine music lover.

I think it is great when bands like Queen, ELO, Styx, and Yes have clear influences from classical music.

Queen is a very versatile band. My favorite tracks are "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Another One Bites The Dust" (original), "You're My Best Friend" (my all time favorite love song), and "Somebody To Love" (original).

A unique rock band with something different to offer.......2002-06-23

One of the most successful British rock groups of the seventies and eighties, Queen started as a quasi-glam rock group but evolved a style all their own, combining elements of pop, rock, heavy metal and a few operatic touches.

Bohemian rhapsody, their biggest hit, was twice a UK number one hit - first on its original release and second on its release to raise money for AIDS charities, following the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury due to AIDS. The song also made the American top ten twice - first on its original release and second following its use in Wayne's world, a few months after Freddie's death, when it made number two. This classic song, seven-minute mini rock opera, overshadows everything else that Queen recorded, but they made plenty of other great music.

Queen had two other UK number one hits - Under pressure (with David Bowie) and Innuendo. They also had five UK number two hits (Killer queen, Somebody to love, We are the champions, Crazy little thing called love and Radio gaga) and three UK number three hits (I want to break free, A kind of magic, I want it all) as well as some other UK top ten hits including You're my best friend, Another one bites the dust, It's a hard life and One vision.

Freddie Mercury has a great voice, many of the songs are great, the arrangements are exciting, and there is no other band like them. Apart from his music as lead singer of Queen, Freddie recorded a few other hits, also featured in this collection. These include Barcelona (a duet with Montserrat Caballe) and a great cover of the old Platters classic, The great pretender.

Queen were truly unique - it's not often you can say that about any singer or group - and this collection contains all their classic tracks.

This set is a repackaging of the three Queen greatest hits. I bought this at my local (British) shop, but I note that it has since been released in this form in America. Rather than pay import prices, you'll find it cheaper to buy the domestic edition.

BRILLIANT.......2002-06-09

I have owned this triple 'Platinum' Album for some months now, already being a big fan of Queen, I couldn't believe my luck when I found this album. Disc one most obviously contains all of queens most popular hits, from the marvelous Bohemian Rhapsody to the Banging We will Rock You.

Disc Two contains yet more hits, including 'Its a kinda magic' and Under Pressure.

Disc Three contains tracks that are queen, but either covered, or sung with other artists, such as Show Must go on, Somebody to love and Another one bites the dust. There are also a couple of the bands solo outings, such as: Living on my own and driven by you.

I recommend you to add this sraight to your basket immedietly, whether you are a long standing fan or a new comer to the unique sound that is Queen !!

Best Queen Compilation Ever.......2002-01-08

If you are considering buying the box set over this one... Don't, look at the tracklisting... you can't compare it! Spellbounding from begining to end!

The definitive collection.......2001-10-19

Queen - The Platinum collection is absolutly a beautiful set. The nicest set in my CD collection. It comes in a sharp looking double jewel case in a slip cover. Contains the UK versions of Greatest Hits I and Greatest Hits II (released with a slightly different track lineup in the states as Classic Queen). All three discs are picture discs with the art that appears on the UK covers and the sound is incredible! The 48 page booklet is also nice. For any Queen fan or fan of rock, this ultra rare import is a must!
