Customer Reviews:
Good...but don't expect Sabbath.......2006-09-14
Seventh Star is a real anomaly in the Black Sabbath album catalogue. The first thing that makes this album stand out as odd is the long title. The name "Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi" made more than a few Sabbath fans raise an eyebrow. The cover itself is less than extraordinary with a very blah photo of Tony in a leather jacket. At first glace, this album looks like it's going to be bad...but thankfully it isn't.
Apparently after the disappointing release of 1983's Born Again the band went their separate ways and began to work on solo projects. Iommi got a new group together (including ex-Deep Purple vocalist Glen Hughes) and began working on a solo project. Sadly due to studio pressure, Iommi was force to release his solo album under the Black Sabbath name. I guess he got back at the studio by adding the moniker "featuring Tony Iommi" under the Sabbath name. This could also be a way to warn fans that this isn't a true Sabbath album.
Because this technically is Tony Iommi's first solo album it shouldn't come as a surprise that this does not sound exactly like Black Sabbath. So it doesn't sound like Sabbath...but does that make it bad? Oh hell no as this album is actually quit good. The music is far from the doomy style Sabbath material and is more upbeat straight ahead 80's heavy metal.
The album opens with the fast paced rocker In for the Kill. I will admit I am not familiar with Glenn Hughes's vocals when he sang for Deep Purple but he fits the music well. A dang fine voice if you ask me. No Stranger to Love is a power ballad and the albums one single. For a ballad this isn't bad and I actually like it quit a bit. Turn to Stone is another power rocker that has a wonderful 80's style metal ring to it.
Sphinx is one of those passable "atmospheric" intros into a song and the Song Seventh Star is a slower, more melodic song. Danger Zone isn't bad, but don't worry it's not a cover of the popular Kenny Loggin's song from the movie Top Gun. The last three songs are rather passable but the first half is top rate.
Some people frown on this release because it doesn't sound like Sabbath but it again it was never meant to. If you go into this album knowing it was supposed to be a Tony Iommi solo album I think more people will find it to their liking.
Though I like this album, I am glad Iommi would reform the Sabbath band for the next album The Eternal Idol and return to more of a doomy (with 80's style flavor) Sabbath musical mold.

Something very precious.......2004-11-16
John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness
Great historical resource.......2000-08-24
This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.
However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

Cinematic, epic, dark prog.......2005-05-31
After nearly four long years, Beyond Twilight has emerged with a new album. Their previous disc The Devil's Hall of Fame with Jorn Lande on vocals was a stunning record, so it caused quite some stress when it was announced that Lande had left and was replaced by a new singer: American vocalist Kelly Sundown Carpenter from the band Outworld. If you were a fan of Lande's vocals in Beyond Twilight, worry not, Carpenter is an absolutely perfect fit for the position. The tone of his voice and his phrasing are highly similar to Lande's, which is great. There are moments on the album, unless you look in the CD booklet, you wouldn't know it's not Jorn Lande singing. Carpenter does an excellent job; he sings passionately and will easily convince everyone that he is the perfect choice.
Finn Zierler, the man behind Beyond Twilight, is still responsible for most of the songwriting on this disc, which is darker than ever, more progressive and more cinematic. Seemingly written locked in a dark attic, the dirty streets of London and near a cold lake, Section X is the continuation of Beyond Twilight's debut concept, and it kicks off with a very similar theme. There is also an informative and quite interesting storyline printed in the booklet. Even though I can't say I'm too impressed by the concept, neither was I by the one in the previous album. It's more Zierler's unique understanding of composition and creating thick, layered soundscapes that draw me to the sound and style of Beyond Twilight. Once again the production on this album is huge, thanks to Zierler's cooperation with Tommy Hansen during the mixing stages. This album is more of progressive tinged disc with sweeping arrangements and numerous emotional twists. Jacob Hansen's addition to the fold also serves this purpose, and his presence is easily noticeable. Give a close listen to the way the guitars slowly soar above Zierler's piano on "Sleeping Beauty" and how they fade into infinity as if the wind carries them away. This song also features guest vocalist Truls Haugen whose clean singing exchanges spots with Carpenter's more aggressive style. The big chorus filled with Latin lyrics is a reference to the first Beyond Twilight album, except that the female choir singing it is a lot more effective this time around.
New vocalist Kelly Sundown Carpenter takes on many different roles through the album. From the most haunting melody lines pulled out of the depths of hell that permeat "The Path of Darkness", the gruff and enraged singing on "Shadow Self", the cold spoken passages on "The Dark Side", or even the more multi-octave hitting screams on the 9-minute closing title track, Carpenter makes this album as amazing as the highly acclaimed debut, and certainly proves to be a fantastic addition to prog metal singers. Once the debut Outworld disc sees the light of day, it will be a headturner, mark my words.
There is a mindblowing instrumental track titled "Portrait F in Dark Waters", a classical intermezzo that starts out lush and laid-back, but quickly picks up and ventures into a dark musical territory displaying Zierler's ethereal piano and keyboard work merged with a great sense of orchestration - you must hear it, as I consider the composition presented here much better crafted than the instrumental pieces on the debut album. Zierler's tone is distinctive in all the songs, as he implements various progressive elements in the songs backed up by powerful twin guitars and a solid rhythm section. Best exemplified on the title track, each instrument weaves its way through the music delicately, laying down subtle odd time signatures without letting go of the dark atmosphere this album is intended to possess. Note the way the keyboards subtly morph into an Egyptian-themed arpeggiated guitar melody during the breakdown that ultimately leads to the dramatic finale. It might strike you speechless.
Beyond Twilight is back! Let's hope we won't have to wait another four years for their third album. But then if that's what it takes to create epic and soulful music like this, that's cool with me. Both Beyond Twilight albums are essential for dark prog metal fans.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

Symphonic Sousa!.......2007-05-12
This recording is unique. I've heard lots of march recordings, and the Dallas Wind Symphony takes a different approach. This is real music. Sousa was a great composer and this recording gets him out of the oom-pah crash-crash rut. There's subtlety here, variations, detail, and the recording itself shows it all with great dynamic range. It's as if Beethoven met Sousa in Dallas.
Superb Sousa - Strictly Speaking.......2007-02-16
Absolutely love this CD! A great collection of my favorite marches and it is well done by this orchestra. My only issue with it is that I was expecting better sound dynamics. The whole CD seems quiet to me. When I used to play marches in the school band I was used to the thunderous, booming crescendos! Eh, I just turn it up louder! Also, my 8-month old son loves this CD. He perks right up and claps when I put it on.
More Than Spectacular!!.......2001-07-24
When I purchased this CD, I did not know what to expect (this is the first CD I purchased with only marches on it). But, I knew if it was from Reference Recordings, the sound would be spectacular! Spectacular marches from a spectacular bandmaster from a spectacular recording label equals something much more than spectacular, to say nothing of the spectacular performances of the Dallas Wind Symphony! To describe this HDCD as a toe-tapper is setting the bar far too low. Listening to just a few of these marches can change a gloomy day to sunny - and I mean it! These marches are impeccably played with such verve and gusto that you are transported right to Main Street USA. And all this marching emotion is captured as faithfully as possible by the "Professor" Keith O. Johnson of Reference Recordings.
If this CD does not get your heart pumping, better call 911!
A GREAT CD not to be missed!

Album Description
Seventh Star has written their most focused and diverse record yet. Taking over six months off of touring to write, the boys are pulling out all the stops. Drawing from all their influences; Hardcore, Trash and anything aggressive. Mainly upping the speed and attitude in the style of metal bands like Obituary or Sepultura, adding the bounce of NYHC bands a la Madball and Biohazard, southern groove in the vein of Crowbar and C.O.C. and parts drawn from Post-hardcore and rock, with overall better song writing. Seventh Star has created some of their most memorable songs. Lyrically, "The Undisputed Truth" will make no compromises. The album's theme is around the Restoration of Creation. Exploring the need for answers and purpose. Bold lyrics with a point. In a scene where bands hop from trend to trend, and where making records has been turned to "Units" and "Scans", Seventh Star stand as a band with a message. Their music has purpose. Their purpose gives birth to music. And their purpose restores the Creation who yearns for its Creator.
2007 - The year of Seventh Star.

Wanna hear some really good hardcore. Look not further than Florida's Seventh Star!!! Very intense, fast, and awsome breakdowns. This album is brutal and heavy hitting. The lyrics are very intense and thought prevoking. This is one of my favorite hardcore bands. You have got to listen to Seventh Star. There amazing!

Yes thats right folks the most underrated Hardcore band in Christain Hardcore today folks! There rough tough guy hardcore. This cd not only kicks your but it smears it all around your face and makes you eat it! From start to finish as I listen to it its just awesome! I can't believe this isn't all round the Hardcore scene. This is up there w/Throwdown and Hatebreed stuff. You've got to check this cd out there first was awesome but this is way better then the first one.

Seventh Star review.......2003-07-14
If your looking for a heavy hardcore album in the vein of Hatebreed, then you'll love Seventh Star's latest album, "Dead End." I ordered it off of amazon.com because a friend of mine told me it was avalible there, and that it was a good CD. The lyrics are inspiring, the music is brutal, and the energy is amazing. i'd recommend it to anyone who likes heavy music. I heard their first release; it was pretty good, but this latest one, "Dead End" destroys it. Its a must have.
For Some, But Not For All.......2003-06-30
Straight to the point - Let me just say that the guitars rock in this band. The problem is that they decided to mix the rock sound with a heavy-metal screamer lead singer and a slow to nitro-fast drummer. I love heavy-metal, I love hard rock...but it doesnt sound quite right with both mixed together. I almost gave this 4 stars simply because when I listen to this cd on my stereo, I crank up the guitar sound and quiet down the vocals - then I realized not everybody listens to it that way so I went ahead and clipped it down to 3. Everything takes off after track 2 - the guitarist has it goin on as far as being a rock artist/riffer but the rest need to go off and make a heavy-metal band somewhere with the right kind of guitarist that fits the sound.
