Two discs each, in individual deluxe folders, from the archives of Decca, DGG, and Philips........featuring Claudio Arrau, Mitsuko Uchida, Vladimir Horowitz, Maurizio Pollini, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Emil Gilels, Martha Argerich, Wilhelm Kempff, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, and Alfred Brendel........what a list, huh?
And, Wait!.....It gets Better!!! Included on each individual collection are rare, long out of print, recordings....the best of each artist's familiar recordings, and....unknown, never-released recordings.....could it get any better than this???
YES! A bonus disc of "Steinway Legends in the Making".......featuring the incredibly gifted artists Lang Lang, Helene Grimaud, and Yundi Li....how great it is to hear these young artists against their towering predecessors of keyboard artistry.
Also included is a forty page deluxe book with tons of photos and memorabilia from Steinway. Remember, all these pianists were solid, dedicated, Steinway artists, and would not play anything else.
While the presentation of these recordings simply could never match or meet the level of the performances themselves (lucky us that they were recorded and preserved so we may hear them again and again, just as fresh and wonderful as the first time), the package IS pretty darned AWESOME!!! The whole collection, book included, fits inside a perfectly proportioned Steinway Piano shaped box, complete with opening lid and support to hold it up, revealing the frame and strings below, which also lifts up to reveal the booklet and individual folders and discs beneath. The entire "piano" itself slips into an oversized slipcase.
What a unique and beautiful set this truly is. Sadly, it was released as a deluxe set in very few numbers. But, luckily, the individual two disc sets by each artist are available separately, so at least the recordings are available still to those who want them.***
Luckily, I knew about this collection many many months before it's limited release and had pre-ordered my set (very happy bear, indeed). It's a joy just to look at this set, and also to know that these "performances" are here in my home for me to enjoy over and over again and again.
To my knowledge, I am unaware of individual companies working together before (Decca, DGG, Philips, and Steinway in this case) to present this type of collection as a "unified" set, and we truly are very lucky beneficiaries of this wonderful partnership of these companies.
My only "complaint"......the outer slipcase that the "piano box" slides into is made of a very inferior weight of paperboard to support such a heavy presentation as this, and is so flimsy that it will not stand up to much use before it simply disintigrates. Sort of too bad, as the rest of the set/presentation is so first rate...shame on you folks...I can't think of anybody who would not have paid a few dollars more for a suitable slipcase for this beautiful set. ~operabruin
***June 22, 2007...I just found out that this set is now, once again, available! Do yourself a favor, and get a copy NOW, before it is gone again! I just found it on another site [classical only online seller], and when I came back here to amazon to make this notation, I also see that they have it in stock again!!! What a stroke of luck for those of you who want this set. Trust me, it is just beautiful, and one of the most unique items you have ever seen! ~operabruin
Steinway Ledgends.......2007-03-09
The quality of the pianos and recording is breath taking says my friend, a professional tuner and former buyer of American & European pianos . And I was just stunned by the playing of these masters...the Liszt pieces of Kempff were were a revelation as was Gilels, and the supreme Horowitz..What is astounding to me is the presence of the piano ( played with a moderately good system only); it is as if they were there in the room.

Sherlock Is MY Favorite.......2005-09-14
Thank You to the people who decided to recover all these great memories of the past. When I was a child we sat in front of the radio for hours and listened to these wonderful broadcasts!
WONDERFUL!My all time favorite is Sherlock Holmes.Well Done!!
Good entertainment value.......2004-03-21
This collection, aside from the first two recordings of Welles and Rathbone, assembles the radio series of Sherlock Holmes as it was after 1945. The sequence of actors portraying Holmes is Tom Conway ('46-'47, 14 recs), John Stanley ('47-'48, 11 recs), John Gielgud ('55, 9 recs) and Carleton Hobbs ('60s, 3 recs). This comes to 20 hours of plays on 20 CDs. The power of radio plays is less in Kilowatts than it the ability of its performers to pull you inside the story by the force of their voice alone. For those who are used to a fuller presentation on film, this is a unique opportunity to judge these players from a single dimension, their vocal tones and inflexions. I thought Gielgud did the best job, although Tom Conway was a close second. I guess theatrical background is a big help to reaching this kind of a talent. As the booklet mentions, Tom Conway's voice and Rathbone's were very close. See if you can tell the difference.

Several years ago we bought this great collection for my mother-in-law, who's in her 80s, and while a lot of the music was familiar to me and my husband, she knew every song. Now it's one of our favorites, too. Anyone who loves music will appreciate this. The double-disc set contains many memorable tunes, from Hugo Winterhalter's "Canadian Sunset" to Jimmy Dorsey's "So Rare".

Customer Reviews:
And you thought you knew the Grieg Concerto....wait till you hear this!!.......2006-04-22
I thought I knew the Grieg concerto very well, owning beautiful recordings by e.g. Lupu, Zimerman.
This recording however opened a whole new Grieg-world to me: not the gentle, polite Grieg, but the virtuosic, passionate Grieg. I never heard anything like this before! What a stunning recording, and what a technical command (remember it's a live recording!). It made me realize this concerto is much, much better then I ever thought.
The Debussy is also very good, interesting to own as comparison to the Deutsche Grammophon recording.
If you want to own a truly exciting cd, buy this one today!
BREATHTAKING GRIEG!.......2004-01-29
Although the Debuusy Preludes are excellently played and well-recorded, the main appeal of this issue is Michelangeli's stunning live performace of the Grieg piano concerto. Listening to this performance is like hearing the work for the first time. He's certainly the only pianist I've ever heard who actually makes the Grieg concerto sound dangerous. The concerto usually makes pleasant rather than exciting listening, but Michelangeli changes all that, charging through this work with unbridled energy and stunning virtuosity. Just listen to him explode into the last movement. Its opening theme sounds more like Bartok than Grieg and its whirlwind final pages remind me of the dizzy waltz that ends the Prokofief Third. For once the concerto's lyrical passages sound passionate rather than placid. In every way this is the most gripping performance of the work I've ever heard. The recorded sound is mediocre. but perfectly listenable. In sum, don't miss this performance!
INCREDIBLE....MUST GET.......2003-01-02
This performance of the Grieg concerto is, IMHO, one of the VERY FINEST the world has EVER heard. Of course, we have heard many great masters tackle this piece, from the early Solomon and Moiseiwitsch to the pianists of our age, especially Murray Perahia. However, Michelangeli is in a class of his own. his playing is an incredible mix of immaculate precision and demonic virtuosity, of heartfelt sensitivity and extroverted flair. Some of my friends feel it's too aggresive for their taste, but i disagree. it's this kind of almost lisztian virtuosity that really ignites this piece. also, check out his very special way of phrasing the music, it has almost become his signature. do yourself a favor and get this CD. you'll be glad you did.
the finest.......2001-05-26
I have recordings (Michelangeli performing Grieg Concerto, op 15) from Geneva 7 June 1941, Milan 9 February 1942, Rome 27 June 1963 - and this recording (London 17 June 1965) is the finest. "Geneva" survives only in fragment (Italian imports; complete assessment of the work not possible); "Milan", the sound quality of the Teldec CD (Teldec release; the same recording can be found in Italian Imports too in which the sound quality differs one CD from another depending on a varing transfer process employed in CD transfer; as far as the transfer go, Teldec exceeds in dynamic range and tonal retrieval of the piano tone - some Italian Imports do offer a clear view of the instrument at the expense of obvious tonal thinning). "Rome" can be found in Italian imports; sound quality and performance are both fine considering the source tape (though it is exceedingly good recording by standard it falls short of the BBC's finest transfer in "London".)
On performance side, "London" simply has everything: 'teeth' (some would prefer 'temperament', 'substance'), concentration ('perfection' - usually refers to designate not only the generic notion 'overall perfection' but 'perfection here on this very occasion'), and a huge satisfaction (I need not know whose that is - since I hear one audience member's frenetic assent, shouting the supreme approval at his own expense [he's rather funny!]) I really was surprised by this BBC release, out of nowhere bringing out the best of Michelangeli and his Grieg interpretation with the fine quality recording only to be totally eclipsed by Michelangeli at his best, musically or otherwise, truly a glorious performance even for the seasoned collectors and Michelangeli fans.
The CD also contains Debussy Preludes Book I, recorded live in London, 13 April 1982. You might want to compare this performance with Deutsche Gramophon release (studio recording; Hamburg 1978 - Deutsche Grammophon 413 450-2) or Memoria label (Hamburg 7 May 1993 - Memoria 999-101). For me, "Hamburg 1993" would serve best, not that both DG and BBC version is less than, in my mind, what they are.

Customer Reviews:
The Best CD to get if you're new to the classical guitar.......2004-02-06
Yea. That's pretty much a summation of this product. On this disc you get a almost all of the major guitarists of today. This of course means you take the good with the bad. It's a great disc because the pieces are staples and the performers are wonderfully varied. Pity David Russell & the LAGQ couldn't have been on it. For what it is it's a wonderful disc. Great intro to the classical guitar.

Here's an unexpected treasure, indeed. Sviatoslav Richter was one of the great musicians of the last century, and had one of the broadest repertoires of any, but Chopin and Debussy are not composers particularly associated with him (though, interestingly enough, he listed them among his favorites). Sometimes his Chopin could be overly bold and strident; here, however, from the lilting opening of the Third Ballade, through to the electricity of his two madcap readings of the last of the Op. 10 Études, he is in electrifying form. His Debussy, too, is deeply compelling: less a pulpy wash of indeterminate sounds, swamped by overindulgent use of the pedal; more a succession of palpably three-dimensional images and characters. Thus you get closer than ever to the gouty old "General Lavine," the glittering explosiveness of "Fireworks," and the grave beauty of the "Submerged Cathedral." Whether or not his interpretations would meet the approval of the composer is irrelevant; what matters is that, Pied Piper-like, Richter insists that they couldn't possibly be played any other way. The recordings, made in the 1960s before silently entranced audiences, are perfectly acceptable. --Harriet Smith, Amazon.co.uk

Recommended, with a reservation.......2001-12-11
Normally I don't let the sound of the recording influence me much. I have listened to, and recommended, some terrible-sounding CDs. But I have to admit I found this set a bit hard to listen to, mainly because the sound is recessed and soft through many of the works. Most of these were apparently recorded from somewhere in the audience, so that coughs and applause are loud and the piano is at times fairly weak. (If you're listening through headphones remember to turn the volume down after each piece, or the audience applause will blast your eardrums.) It's a pity too, because Richter was in top form in these concers, spread between 1963 and 1967. He recorded some of these pieces many times, but arguably never better than here.
His Chopin is among his most sensitive and delicate on record. As the Amazon reviewer comments, often SR's Chopin could be a bit brittle, but here he breathes and sighs and treats us to intimate shadings so subtle as to defy verbal description. Yet this is decidedly not "overly-delicate." There are a few twists and turns that I wonder about, in terms of correctness, but I don't have a score and really shouldn't nitpick. There are some abrupt tempo and dynamic changes that are wilder than I've ever heard before and also would leave most pianists with lesser technical equipment in the dust, but Richter navigates them without difficulty. This is some of the finest Chopin he ever recorded. He's almost in danger of making it all sound too easy.
With any other mortal the Chopin described above would be the highlight. But for Richter we're just getting warmed up. The Debussy Preludes are so astonishing I actually considered not writing a review here because I felt (and feel) there's nothing I (or anyone) can actually say that adds anything. I *will* say I wish Richter had either recorded these works in the studio or under better sonic circumstances. Actually Book II sounds pretty decent, but Book I suffers from those weak, fuzzy sonics. A lot of color, so crucial to Debussy, is lost. You can hear the detail, but you really have to listen really closely, and pump the volume up a little more than usual, turning it back down again before the applause engulfs you. But active listeners will be rewarded for their effort. After hearing Richter you realize how plain Michelangeli sounds--his DG account is better recorded, but every piece tends to sound fairly the same. Richter equals Michelangeli's technical achievement while surpassing him in insight into the works, giving each one a very distinct flavor. He truly captures a spirit, something between reflection and melancholy, that cannot be put into words but has to be listened to. Michelangeli does not get the melancholy, because he is so detatched and clinical he does not insert any emotion into his reading of the Preludes, unfortunately. I wonder how many student piansts, after hearing Richter in these works, decided never to attempt them themselves!
Despite the proximity of the microphone to the audience, things are mostly quiet, though a poorly-timed cough here and there can really upset the mood. Still, this collection is worth having. The recordings are just an indication of what the event must have really sounded like, the way Leonardo's Last Supper as it survives is but a suggestion of the original grandeur. But it's the best we're going to get, and it's still pretty damned magnificent.
Richter's Glorious Debussy.......2000-06-11
I chanced to find this CD at Tower Records in Boston while I was looking for recordings of the First Book of Debussy Preludes. I immediately felt something uniquely special about it even without listening to it, and was not disappointed. This is arguably the finest recording of this repertoire ever - the accompanying Chopin is wonderful, too, in its electrifying urgency. However, it is the Debussy that is, to me, the main attraction of this disc. Compared to Richter's, even the classic version by Gieseking sounds bland (not to mention a number of technical problems that Gieseking didn't seem to have been able to solve, and that did not even exist for Richter!). The variety of sonorities that Richter gets out of his piano is astounding; what is even more astounding is the fact that this variety is generated not just by Richter's sonic imagination, but also by his unflinching attention to the details of the score. Richter's playing, in general, may appear slightly "impersonal" - however, it is precisely that quasi-detachment that makes his interpretation so tantalizing. Indeed, Richter's personality serves this particular repertoire the best, for both Debussy's creative method and Richter's interpretation are based on bringing forth a vast plethora of musical and extra-musical associations via the the deceptively simple, but, in fact, super-sophisticated means. For comparison purposes, I also listened to the new recording of Pollini on DG, and was very disappointed. Pollini's recording features what one may consider the proverbial "good piano sound" (albeit too closely miked) and a great dexterity (although Richter beats him there, too), but the crudity and insensitivity of his interpretation are deplorable.
I encourage everyone who is interested in Debussy or Richter (or in great piano playing) to get hold of this fabulous Richter recording - the Second Book of Preludes is as tremendous as the First; the only minus that one can find in this album is the absence of "La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin" and "Minstrels"; listening to "Bruyeres" and "General Lavine" from Book Two made me think about how wonderful Richter would have been in those First Book Preludes that he chose to leave out. That, however, is quite amply compensated for by the two great versions of "La Serenade Interrompue"! The brochure features excellent notes on Richter by his disciple Alexander Melnikov.
