The closest the Beatles came to a greatest hits package, this document of the early part of their career features hit singles (in chronological order) and selected album tracks, running from "Love Me Do" through the groundbreaking Rubber Soul and Revolver albums. While this may be an excellent intro for beginners, real fans will never be content with only selections, especially when you're dealing with those aforementioned albums. Capitol packages the collection on two discs, copying the original vinyl version--but, of course, CDs hold more music than records did. Still, you do get 26 bona fide classics, so there's no real need to complain. --Bill Holdship

So many hits !.......2007-04-29
Great double album from the early days, I just love to listen to this cd and really feel the "sweet sixties" A great cd for everyone. The Beatles will survive forever !
GREAT SONGS, GREAT MEMORIES.......2007-04-14
These CDs sound great and are great sounds. If you do not have any Beatles yet and you know you will not buy all of their CDs then get this and it's blue brother 1967-70 and you can't go wrong. This album has a special place in my heart. I got the 8-track tapes back in 1973 when they came out and played them over and over and over. IMHO these are the best songs released in the first half of the 1960s by anyone. The state of Rock n Roll was on life support when these guys hit the scene in 1964 in the USA at least. They jump started RnR all over again and the rest is history. Like I said these are the best of the best so get these if you get anything. Rock on. Jim in So Cal.
Beatles 1962-1966.......2007-04-10
Some great early hits and of course a fine cd, afterall it is the Beatles
Great Beatle Music.......2007-03-09
We really liked the selections on this CD. They would have been nicer if the individual tracks were a little longer. The memories they brought back really made our week.
A Great Starter Kit.......2007-03-08
I'm pretty sure that a lot of the under 40 Beatles fans' journey with the Fab Four stated off here. It took me a week of the album lying around the house for me to get started on it and once I did, I was so pissed off for wasting that week NOT listening to it. It goes without saying that I was hooked from the beginning and not even 6 months from listening to it, it has already changed my life and the way I view music.
When I have kids, they'll be sure to grow up on The Beatles and the lagacy can live on for another 100 years through the next generation

Customer Reviews:
Big Billboard Collection!!!.......2006-03-05
I Have this box set of the Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits 1962-1966. I'm doing a Billboard Top Rock'n' Roll Hits collection from 1957-1972. Good for a little shortcut of your Billboard collection. So many good songs that I've never had before.
It's okay .......2005-07-08
I'm really disappointed with Billboard's music collections. You'd think that one of the most respected music publications out there would put together compilations better than the ones they're offering.
I wasn't born until the mid-70's but I deeply appreciate the music of the 60's, which defined culture then and still does to this day. I recognize the vast majority of the hits in their collections but some selections just scream, "Filler!"
If you want good compliations, Entertainment Weekly offers excellent ones. There are more songs and they include hits that were lower on the charts but that people, nonetheless, still love.
BTW: On the back of the disc to the 1964 collection there is a note saying that because of licensing restrictions, The Beatles songs were not included. Otherwise, that year would have been entirely them (or at least a good 7 of the 10 songs).
Overpriced and incomplete.......2004-05-04
Overall a good collection, but like the other reviewer said, 2 hours of music for a whopping $50?!?
And what happened to the Beatles' "I Want to Hold your Hand?" How could that *not* be a Top-10 hit?
Not enough time.......2003-12-22
I would guess that you get about 2hrs of music for fifty bucks.
Nice box set for thirty, not fifty.
OMIT THE "NAME GAME" AND THIS WOULD BE A GOOD COLLECTION.......2000-09-18
"The Name Game" is the most idiotic, annoying and atrocious hunk of junk in creation. It has nothing to recommend it and is pure madness. I wouldn't wish "The Name Game" on anyone and have detested it since I was a very little child.
"Bread and Butter" would be ok, except the words are pretty stupid.
This collection has some good songs, like "Sugar Shack," "Louie, Louie" and the Neil Diamond penned hit for the Monkees, "I'm a Believer." The 60s was the best musical decade. As I said, omit "The Name Game" and you have a good collection. It is like the frog in the punch bowl. The table looks nice, the punch is good, but the frog makes the punch not drinkable. "The Name Game" is not hearing friendly and has cost this collection one star.

FINALLY RELEASED ON CD.EXCELLENT SOUND .......2005-11-03
THIS ALBUM CONTAINS ALL HER HITS AND SOME LESSER KNOWN SLEEPERS.A VERY ENJOYABLE PRESENTATION.THIS SET HAS WONDERFUL SOUND.I WILL BE GETTING MOST OF NEW CAMEO-PARKWAY RELEASES. IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT.
Rock me in the cradle of love!.......2005-10-24
The wait is over. This collection brings us the official release of the original Cameo recordings of the label's most successful female solo artist. The set consists of 24 tracks total, all in mono, including all ten of Dee Dee's Hot 100 hits. You get her six top 40 hits, plus album cuts and several non-charting singles. A couple of interesting songs are the remakes "You Are My Sunshine" (a top ten hit for Ray Charles in '62) and "To Know Him Is To Love Him" (a #1 smash for the Teddy Bears in '58). The version of Dee Dee's top five hit with Chubby Checker that is included here is her album version (not the hit single version). The digital sound is first-rate. A four page essay (written by Jeff Tamarkin, who also authored the essay for the Cameo Parkway box set released in May 2005) plus five pages of credits and chart info detail her short career. Most fans and collectors will be satisfied (you can't beat the price). Highly recommended.
Wild!.......2005-10-20
I too join the ranks of music nuts who longed to see the day when ABK would finally let the cameo/parkway catalog see the light of day. Well that day is finally here! Dee Dee Sharp is a fine singer who deserved to see her work relased on CD, and all her great hits are here! My personal favorite is "Wild!" with a cha cha sound unlike any of the other tracks. There are some latter (mid sixties) gems which are worth hearing, this was a time when Dee Dee was being produced by Gamble (her eventual husband) and Huff. But listen to "Never Pick a Pretty", which mostly sounds like the female take on Jimmy Soul's "If you wanna be happy" The CD is a great buy and a necessary addition to your collection. The sound quality is great as well as the sound selection. I am glad Dee Dee's work is once again available to the buyers on a legit release.

Customer Reviews:
Dean Martin hits again.......2002-05-02
Certainly a must for every Dino fan. Together with the other 3 boxes of Bear family everything that he ever recorded or was said to have recorded (Baker Knight songs) are contained.
Now we are looking forward to his TV Shows on DVD.
A great book is included with many rare pictures.
WE LOVE SOMEBODY, AND HIS NAME IS DEAN.......2002-02-27
Dean Martin's fans will be enraptured by this staggering 6CD set, the first part of two mammoth box sets of Dean's Reprise recordings IN THEIR ENTIRETY FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, courtesy of the good people at Bear Family Recordings, whose work is peerless. This box contains Dean's early Reprise works, from the time he joined Reprise at the request of his pal Frank Sinatra (who started Reprise) in 1962, right through to 1966. The highlights here are plentiful: Tracks from Dean's "international" albums that started him off; (French Style/Dino Latino) arranged by Neil Hefti, the happy neapolitan trips through Paris with lush versions of GIGI, and the charming LA VIE EN ROSE, then it's off to Mexico with great charts by the immortal Don Costa; rip roarin' versions of ALLA EN EL RANCHO GRANDE and the Peggy Lee - immortalized MANANA, and romantic favorites like WHAT A DIFF'RENCE A DAY MADE and ALWAYS IN MY HEART. All Dean's singles are included here, most of which were of Italian flavor: MAMA ROMA, FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, and VIA VENETO, plus the more commercial but clever TIK-A-TEE, TIK-A-TAY and GRAZIE,PREGO,SCUZI. Dean's affinity for country and western music was well noted, even during his tenure with Capitol, but at Reprise, he was able to do more of the material he relished, and that was country! Such standouts with Don Costa, Marty Paich, and Martin camp arranger/conductor extraordinaire Ernie Freeman include SHUTTERS AND BOARDS, FACE IN A CROWD, MY HEART CRIES FOR YOU, and the poignant ROCKIN' ALONE (In an old rocking chair) are just a few. Once again, the hardcover book that comes with this set is absolutely gorgeous, loaded with pictures and information you'll cherish for years to come. To close, may I mention a song on this box set by Dean Martin, one of the definitive versions of an American standard, "I'LL BE SEEING YOU". Dean, we'll be hearing you, too! ENJOY!

Classic performances by the true masters of the genre.......2004-01-11
"A rare collection of performances by America's premier bluesmen at the peak of their artistry" proclaims the cover of this disc, and that's no idle boast. Culled from 33 tracks on the two simultaneously released and similarly titled DVDs, these 16 tunes were performed live in German TV studios between 1962 and 1966, and thought lost until recently discovered.
Although the audio is mono, it's immaculately clean, and each instrument is clearly audible, an amazing feat for TV sound during these years.
T-Bone Walker does a mellow, jazzy "Don't Throw Your Love On Me So Strong", laying down one of his finest ever vocals performances. Veterans Lonnie Johnson and Sippie Wallace (both of whom were born at the tail end of the 19th century, and had risen to stardom way back in the twenties) turn out great, soulful performances of "Another Night To Cry" and "Women Be Wise".
In fact, Delta legend Robert Johnson much admired the older Lonnie Johnson, and even took to telling people that his middle initial, L, stood for "Lonnie". (It stood for Leroy. And besides, Lonnie Johnson's first name was actually Alonzo.)
Other highlights include Howlin' Wolf's two songs, Memphis Slim's "Everyday I Have The Blues" (a superior performance which he tosses off seemingly with the greatest of ease), Victoria Spivey's "Black Snake Blues", a slow, stately "Five Long Years" by pianist Eddie Boyd, and "Mississippi" Fred McDowell's howling slide guitar workout "Going Down To The River".
This CD is a little bit short, and some of the performances (such as Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working") are unusually tame, but it is still a real goldmine for folk and Chicago blues fans. Never before were such historic performances so easily available in pristine sound, and as an added bonus, the booklet features complete recording information, rare photos, and an excellent, insightful essay by Rob Bowman.
4 1/2 stars - highly recommended.
Lost Gold!.......2003-10-02
Some of the greatest and most influential music this country has ever created was the blues- but the artists were just not given the apreciation in this country they deserved. It took the interest in Blues music by young musicians in Europe- especially in Britain- from the Rolling Stones to Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix (who actually played with B. B. King at one point) to bring them back to America. Kids hearing this music then began to search out the originators of this music and finally these Blues pioneers started to gain recognition in their own country. This DVD (and the others in the series) captures where it all got started in Europe.
Since they couldn't find places to play in the US aside form bars and honkey-tonks, they launched a tour in Europe of some of the best Bluesmen (and ladies) of the time in 1962. It was hugely successful and more tours followed. Unfortunately, little to nothing was believed to have survived of the music of that period until a German televison station was going through some old things and found several video tapes of studio programs recorded at that time. Tapes were costly and often were re-recorded over- so the fact of their mere survival is a miracle. The quality is outstanding for the time. So is the sound quality (mono, but what did you expect from a TV show?). You get eighteen amazing performances. There is no announcer- the artists introduce each other and sometimes tell you about the song. Although the tracks may list one performer, you will notice others playing "backup". You get Muddy Waters with his "Mojo Working" and Willie Dixon's "Weak Brain and Narrow Mind", Sippie Wallace (there for the Lady Bluesmakers) telling "Women Be Wise" and Memphis Slim letting us know that "the Blues is Everywhere". The list goes on. Check out the rest of the series too- you won't be disappointed!
"America's premiere Bluesmen at their peak".......2003-08-30
Some of the most celebrated "Blues Singers" perform on this one-of-a-kind release "The American folk Blues Festival 1962-1966". With an all-star cast of Eddie Boyd, Willie Dixon, Lightnin' Hopkins, Lonnie Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Memphis Slim, Otis Rush, Victoria Spivey, T-Bone Walker, Sippie Wallace, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Sonny Boy Williamson and Howlin Wolf clearly having a ball sharing their God-given talent. This is one of the top blues rivals to come along in many a moon.
So all you blues collectors take care when you play this historic recording with some of the greats in fine fiddle and voice. Some of the artists are no longer with us, but with this recording you can relive those days when blues took hold of you and it was an all time high. Entire festival is a stand out with "I CAN'T QUIT YOU BABY", "HOODOO MAN BLUES", "MY YOUNGER DAYS" and "GOT MY MOJO WORKING" many performers at the peak of their careers giving the public an ear full ~ which is the roots of American music....gotta love it!
Rush out quickly and pick this one up, enjoy the blues as it was meant to be heard. A treasure of unheard blues in this country until this release. Rare photos and a descriptive 28 page booklet that is collectible. Also available on DVD "The American Folk Blues Festival Vol. 1" and "The American folk Blues Festival Vol. 2", which gives the fans sights and sounds we love...good ole American Blues!

Bye bye, children........2005-01-30
This fifth volume in the Atlantic Rhythm and Blues series covers the years 1962 to 1966. There are plenty of classic hits here, plus a few lesser known gems. This is great stuff, and if you can find a copy, I would recommend getting it.

PLAY IT AGAIN, VAN.......2005-09-11
The international piano competitions have a great deal of atmosphere and `buzz' about them, not to mention a great deal of politics like any other sport. Van Cliburn was the first non-Russian to win the Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow, and when the prize in the next of those seemed inevitably to be going to Ogdon the Soviet authorities pressed a reluctant Ashkenazy into entering to split the award with him. The reclusive Cliburn founded his own event in Fort Worth, and this disc contains a selection of the entries for the first two of the series in 1962 and 1966. Recorded material appears to be thin on the ground, and the only complete work of any great length here is the Copland sonata played by gold medallist Ralph Votapek in 1962. The other contributions are from Lupu, gold medallist in 1966, and from Nicolai Petrov who was apparently silver medallist in that year, although the liner-note tells us at another point that that award went to Barry Lee Snyder.
Of the three, Lupu has made the big time and deservedly so, and my impression is that the other two have not. Votapek starts very well with a movement from one of the MacDowell sonatas, displaying a big tone at the start and a lot of sensitivity and sympathy to this slightly reactionary music later. In any case it's pleasant to hear anything by MacDowell these days other than To a Wild Rose. In the three Brahms numbers from op118 there are more wrong notes than I would expect to hear from a gold medallist in any of the more recent competitions, but they are agreeably played, showing a good sense of the composer's idiom and some real originality in the clog-dance effect that he gives to the rhythm of the ballade. The Copland sonata is proficiently done, with faster speeds in the outer movements than Peter Lawson adopts, but I can't really find this performance to be any kind of rival to Lawson's in any respect at all.
From Petrov we get two Scarlatti sonatas plus another movement from one by MacDowell - all goodish but hardly outstanding to my own way of thinking. Whether or not hindsight comes into the matter, I start to get a genuine sense of occasion when Lupu takes the stage with the first movement of the second Prokofiev concerto. The orchestral contribution is not helped by a very indifferent piece of recording, but I was interested to hear Lupu in this music by way of a change from the Schubert and Mozart in which I know him better. Even in Schubert I have found flashes of real and even startling power at times as well as the lyric beauty of touch for which Lupu is more renowned, and his reading here has real stature and a commanding quality to it.
The recorded sound is never better than good average and not always even that. There is naturally applause from the audiences (I wouldn't have felt I was getting my money's worth without it), and they seem to contain a considerable number of sufferers from pulmonary afflictions, but I guess that's all part of the atmosphere too. Absolutely nothing on this disc could even remotely be called essential for anyone's collection. This is a temps-perdu job, for the nostalgia market, and I enjoy it simply on that basis.
