History gives Steely Dan's Walter Becker and Donald Fagen the last, hearty laugh on this, the crown jewel in their remarkable canon of '70s Mensa pop. Sneaking onto the charts a half-decade earlier with sinuous, jazz-inflected "rock," the dysfunctional duo's acerbic, anti-heroic visions had been critically lauded for their band identity and killer guitar riffs, then promptly challenged when the two songwriters retired from the road, dissolved any formal band lineup, and used the studio as laboratory. Aja carried the added indignity of its increased focus on sophisticated jazz models and musicianship, which carried the Dan's ambitions even further in terms of suave harmonies, intricate song structures, and brilliant playing. Time has proven them wiser than their rock crit detractors: These seven songs abound in knotty plots, sneaky imagery, and drop-dead brilliant performances from a blue chip studio repertory studded with first-call jazz players epitomized by Wayne Shorter's towering solo on the title song. From the hard-boiled jazz romance of "Deacon Blues" to the twisted Homeric vamp of "Home at Last," the veiled but ominous swing of "Peg" to the sci-fi eroticism of "Josie," Aja is a modern pop classic and the coolest fusion record no one ever thought to lump in that category. --Sam Sutherland --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Through thick hazy clouds of pot smoke........2007-07-07

I had this album on heavy rotation in my car in my junior and senior year. Eight tracks never sounded so good. Never fails to evoke a mood of somber reflection, some how sad. Deacon Blues....

5 out of 5 stars Must Have, Nuff Said?.......2007-07-04

If you do not have this album in your list of greatest albums of all time, I suppose I can understand if I really reeeeeeealy open up my mind. I am just extactic to know, after 30 years, that I love this album more and more. Especially now that we have the remastered version. The drumming really pops out on this version to bring the appreciation for the whole ensemble to an ever higher level. I cannot imagine life without this album (maybe I overstate a little but you get the idea).

5 out of 5 stars When all my dime dancing is through..........2007-06-22

I run to the rack and pick up this album. Of the few albums that can be called a perfect 10, this is one of them in my opinion. With not a bad cut on it, it's the best 8 dollars you'll ever spend on a CD. Superb musical artistry from Fagen and Becker.

Product Description

Aja West is best known as the composer and producer behind the funk/hip-hop/jazz super group, The Mackrosoft. "The Olympian" finds Aja West bearing his blue soul in this atlas of the hustling game. Pimping, psychedelics, drowning, redemption and girl's soccer are the subjects stirring in these waters of hybrid funk. Aja West has been called "the Captain Beefheart of hip-hop" (All Music Guide) for his creative use of auto tuned vocals and his tremendously wide and strange vocal range. Minimalist drum beats and deconstructed bass lines mix with a full choir of backup singers, call and responding to Aja West s roughneck falsetto. As with every Mackrosoft release prestigious guests like Money Mark (Beastie Boys) and Reggie Watts (Maktub/Soulive) join the groove to great effect. "The Olympian" let s you slide deep in the groove sounding like an omelet of "Off the Wall" era Michael Jackson, Oukast, Talking Heads, and Frank Zappa. You ll have to decide for yourself what genre it belongs under. Six videos from the upcoming Olympian DVD are currently available at www.mackrosoft.com

5 out of 5 stars Such a fun album.......2007-06-08

These tunes always bring a big smile to my face. Aja's music always seems to somehow escape the inhibitions that hold back many musicians (and society in general) in that a lot of fun was had while making this music and there is a lot fun to be had listening to it. My friends and I love getting together and acting some fools with this as our soundtrack. Get this album and dance like no one is watching! Also be sure not to miss Total Recall 2012, another great album from Aja West and friends.

5 out of 5 stars The Absolute Funkiest album!.......2007-01-24

"The very bridge between the forefathers - Clinton, Stone, Hancock - and something like D'Angelo."
- Straight No Chaser

"On an epic project, 27 musicians unite to drop a funky, winding tale of musical freedom. Hip-hop edges frame jazz, house and disco-soul as organic instruments mingle with digital manipulators in a seductive dance. Composer and executive producer Aja West has mad chops!"
- URB Magazine

"Minimal drum beats and deconstructed bass lines. Immediate underground funk!"
- XLR8R

"The Mackrosoft crew (brothers Cheeba and Aja West) have thus far sailed under the funk radar, but their mythic notoriety will soon become ubiquitous. Like Disney's Electrical Parade on acid."
- Wax Poetics

"A record that's perfect... a classic 70s keyboard approach to funk!"
- Dusty Groove

"The slick, fluid instrumental jams here reside in that juicy, bubble-butted zone between the porn-flick score and the blaxploitation-film soundtrack."
- The Stranger

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhh! Close your eyes & let it roll. Pure Genius!.......2007-05-12

Probably (and I say this with some regret because the fact is, all SD is great) the greatest Steely Dan album.

I love this CD. Fagen and Becker have collaborated to create some of the most beautiful jazz/blues music ever played. Yeah, that's right, I said jazz/blues. This album is more jazz and blues than the typical rock/jazz fusion from like their earlier albums.

For example, Aja, the title track; 8 minutes of pure jazz jammin', no rock, no extra noise, just good jazz, cool guitar, great keys, perfect percussion and Donald, crooning the blues. It just don't get any better than this.

As for the rest of the genius on the album: Black Cow is, again, more jazz/blues but very funky this song was released to limited airplay, but for some reason didn't get picked up like some of the other SD fare, waxing poetic about a woman that keeps running away, Fagen sounds like a lost puppy, blues dripping from the speakers; Deacon Blues, one of the most recognizable SD songs, even by those who aren't die-hards, this song is pure blues with a slight edge on the percussion; Peg, another recognizable tune, with its funky bass line, jazz guitar and keys and solid drums; Home at Last, which is just downright great piano jazz and horn ablarin'; I Got the News, funky on first listen is actually very bluesy on the keys, if slightly upbeat, the song is quite ambiguous; and last but not least another popular tune, Josie, which is pure jazz guitar chords ,if only played a little off tempo from typical jazz.

The album was pure genius and, in my ever so humble opinion, the highlight of a career that really didn't have any down time, just a really great high time.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM.

    Product Description

Aja West, producer of hybrid funk jazz and soul presents his long awaited masterwork, "Total Recall 2012". After leading super group The Mackrosoft through ten fantastically successful albums, Aja West takes a solo turn bringing along his most talented and prestigious friends. Reggie Watts (Maktub/Soulive) co-writes and lends his incredible vocal styling to a slew of new funk pop jams. His sweet and strong voice has been compared to everyone from Chris Cornell to Marvin Gaye. The adventurous lyrics of "The Getaway" and "Out of Control" showcase Watt s funky Sly Stone/D Angelo type of vocal seduction at it s absolute finest. Money Mark (Beastie Boys), Fred Wesley (James Brown), Skerik (Les Claypool), Mike Clark & Paul Jackson (Herbie Hancock) and Cheeba (The Cheebacabra) are just of a few of incredible starting line-up of talent. Composer Aja West keeps the production crisp and clean playing multiple instruments and easing in and out of the jams on vocoder and slinky effected vocals. Female sirens tempt the listener over the sparse groove of "How Many Lumps?" and "Penny in a Fountain" showcasing classic funky rhythm and blue. 5 out of 5 stars I'd classify this as a guilty pleasure . . ........2005-10-28

. . . if it weren't so danged accomplished. I admit, I took a flyer on this one: I purchased it with no idea of what I was getting into, something I do from time to time, especially if I can get a disc used or as a cutout from my local Independent Records store for a couple of bucks.

What we've got here is 70's style instrumental soul-funk-jazz, neatly updated and filtered through a kinda wacky thumb-your-nose-at-the-establishment aesthetic. What amazes about this disc is not only the incredibly high music and production values for an indie project, but its zaniness and pure pleasurability.

Featuring a dizzying array of instruments (11 by leader Aja West and 10 by pal Cheeba) and augmented by 18 more played by various guests, the soundscape emerges with an entirely unexpected clarity and precision.

A huge surprise filled with smart, funky music brilliantly conceived and pulled off this is my left-field disc of the year. Absolutely irresistible.

5 out of 5 stars Yep, this is a classic!!!!.......2005-08-25

A departure from his 2000 release, Trauma... Life in the ER, but Aja West and sidekick Cheeba continue to bring results not common with indie talent.

If you are in to 70's funk/electronic, you have to know that this album is for you. If you like The Beastie Boy's Ill Communication, this album is for you. Aja and Cheeba blend the melody of the organs and keyboards, with stunning horn and some string arrangments with that really work with the funk embedded in it. The result feels like a Jazz/Funk fusion that doesn't disappoint.

Certainly for all fans, as both my friends and my mother (eeeekkk!!) have been grooving to it. I would recommend this for any fan of Jazz or 70's funk.

Also, for those desiring more information, I found out a lot about Aja, Cheeba, and a few other bands on thier label at [...]. Great stuff, I recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums of All Time and Great Sound Quality Too!.......2006-10-22

Did Steely Dan ever really release a bad album? Although each album had its own little idiosyncracy and in this case, the sixth effort, we get what is clearly their best ever album. This album is the culmination of all their previous work on all the prior albums to arrive at that unique Dan sound. Where the debut album had that brilliant guitar track "Reelin' In the Years" and the second album had the excellent guitar playing on the opening track "Bodhisattva" we get classic tracks like "Black Cow", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", "Peg" (my all-time favourite Dan track) and "Josie". The remaining two tracks are not filler material either. This album is so good that you don't just listen to it but you experience it. This album, together with "Katy Lied" and "Can't Buy a Thrill", represent the best work that Steely Dan have ever done respectively.

With their use of brilliant session musicians on their albums, it's sometimes easy to overlook the great talent of Walter Becker and to a lesser extent Donald Fagen as musicians in their own right. "Peg" is my all-time favourite Dan track and one of the main reasons is not just the great guitar work on it but the truly inspired and brilliant bass guitar playing that Becker does on it. The whole track is a virtual clinic on how to play brilliant running bass. Later on on the brilliant album "Two Against Nature" we also get to see Becker display excellent, tasty guitar bluesy licks as well showing him to be a brilliant bass player and an extremely competent guitar player as well.

Another plus is the great sound quality as well as the brilliant songwriting and musicianship and the mini-lp sleeve replica is very well done and includes the lyrics of all the tracks in both English and Japanese with typically humorous liner notes written in 1999 by Fagen and Becker themselves. The disc isn't remastered but that doesn't matter as it sounds a lot better than many other albums that I'd heard that are supposed to have been themselves.

For fans of great music this comes very highly recommended indeed; not only is this Dan's best album, it's also one of the best albums of all time.

    5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-12-02

Probably the best record of all time for it's genre in my opinion. I have been living with this piece of work for 26 years and the song Aja still has the same effect on me. Timeless.

5 out of 5 stars pardon my skepticism..........2000-12-04

the preceding review may be totally on the level, I even hope it is, but forgive me for being a bit suspicious about the like especially when the reviewer fails to get the artist's name right....uh, that would be StEEly my friend. I should quickly say, however, that there is a good possibility I will shell out the bucks to own yet another version of my favorite album of all time....especially now that I know it blows away the MFSL gold version....yada-yada-yada.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Cent.......2000-06-22

This has got to be the best version of this title I have ever heard. Forget MFSL's gold disc. There's sound on this Jap remaster you've never heard before in a stunning, clear warmth. And you get an awesome custom mini-LP package with complete liner notes. By far, the best title under Stelly Dan's belt, "AJA" reaches a new height!

4 out of 5 stars Worthy successor to volume I.......2000-09-10

This volume continues the project to record Respighi's complete works for piano and voice. It is a worthy successor to its fine predecessor in Volume I, recorded by tenor Leonardo di Lisi and pianist Reinild Mees. Both these artists appear in Volume II, with the addition of soprano Andrea Catzel, whose spinto voice gives admirable drama to songs like "Nebbie" and "Povero Cor", which show the influence of verismo opera.

Like its predecessor, this volume incorporates songs from several periods in Respighi's creative development. Besides the verismo, one hears the influences of impressionism in "Sei Liriche" of 1909 and of folk style in the relatively late "Due Canzoni dialettali". There is also the experimental, recitative-like "E se un giorno tornasse". This variety makes the recording interesting to listen to from start to finish.

All three artists give fine performances, with careful attention to the details of the music and the stylistic demands of the different songs. The liner notes (in Italian and English) are less extensive than in the first volume of the series. Texts and English translations of the songs are included.

5 out of 5 stars Down and dirty funk!.......2005-12-27

The Mackrosoft is an evolving and maturing band. Every record they put out is better than the previous one. The Dawning of the Aja Aquarius is the epilogue of "The Mackrosoft Trilogy of Four." The amazingly talented Aja West leads a great team of musicians to the edges of funk, hip-hop, jazz, and experimental fusion. Be on the lookout for upcoming Mackrosoft and Aja West albums, as this is a band no one should ignore.
