4 out of 5 stars Dance, dance.......2006-10-23

About halfway through the first song of "Here Comes the Indian," it becomes pretty obvious just where the name comes from -- it takes on the form of a psychedelic tribal chant.

Animal Collective was only just using that name when they put out this eerie collection of experimental music, which sounds a lot like some sort of ancient ritual captured on tape. Sights, sounds and smells are all evoked by sound alone, and while it's not very accessible, it is entrancing if you're open-minded (or stoned).

It opens with "Native Belle," which begins with an almost inaudible tapping. A wavering violin joins in, along with the sound of voices murmuring so softly that they merge into a white-noise hum. Then the song begins. Stops. Begins again, as a clashing, swirling mass of eerie voices, wild rhythms and mad drumming.

After that, the band explores other kinds of experimental music -- rapid-fire drumming that ends with soft chants and handclapping, stately buzzing soundscapes bursting with odd noises, and the sound of howling, ghostly voices over a heavy wash of synth. The perfect Halloween song.

"Two Sails on a Sound" is deeply unnerving with its dark piano and nature noises, which make you feel like you're adrift on a dangerous river. It ends with a clashing tribal-rock number overlaid with distorted voices, and finally with the buzzing, shifting balladry of "Too Soon," which blossoms out into a bizarre hallucinatory sound.

Well, "Here Comes the Indian" is not a bounce-your-bottom-while-you-drive kind of album. The Animal Collective had already done other experimental albums (under different names) by the time they put this out -- except this one has a cohesive theme.

Sit back and visualize fires, dark forests, fast-flowing rivers, cave paintings, and that wintry dawn sky. Fuzz guitar and tribal drums form the basis of this music, along with thick, gauzy synth that seems to muffle the music. And they pepper it with all sorts of sounds -- quacks, dripping water, crickets, and eerie vocals that never quite form words.

With a primitive catchiness and wild energy, "Here Comes the Indian" is a pretty vibrant experimental album. Just don't expect to be able to dance to it.

5 out of 5 stars a staggering wild beast.......2006-10-12

Dear Fan of Here Comes The Indian,

I am writing this because I have recently fully realised the beauty, majesty, and utter brilliance of Here Comes The Indian!!

I've been going through a bit of an Animal Collective phase over the last week or two and last night i was listening to Here Comes The Indian, and it all made sense! I have always put it on occasionally cause it's such a twisted sonic experience, but i never really felt like it had penetrated into something deeper...

Now, almost two years after obtaining it i have finally realised how completely peculiar, primal, and pure it is...

I remembered that you were a big fan, and for a long time wondered why you gave it so much more attention than sung tongs or any of their other stuff..

so now i understand... its just amazing that an album that sounds so deeply rooted in nature, fauna, and tribalism can also sound so unique and modern... it is a strange and vast beast that has hibernated for a long time in my mind, but has now awoken to bear its teeth and stamp its feet..

and i love it.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic In Modern Experiment.......2005-06-26

Just giving my stars. Just a message to all those who beleive there is are people who listen to music just "because no one else can," and that that would some how make them cool. The people who like this "unlistenable" music are not at all concerned with you. Go listen to your Billy Joel, we won't criticize you for it.

2 out of 5 stars GET ANY OTHER ANIMAL COLLECTIVE RECORD OTHER THAN THIS ONE!.......2005-05-22

So I like the Animal Collective, a lot. I didn't at first, when all I had heard were the low points of spirit they're gone, but then I heard Sung Tongs and went nuts, it is a great album. Then I got Panda Bear's album and loved that and have since purchased almost ALL OF THEIR RECORDS and the ONLY ONE THAT DOESN"T STAND UP IS THIS ONE. It just never comes together the way the others do, it sounds like they are having fun, but I am not. If you are a completist buy it, but get all the others first.

5 out of 5 stars Cave Music.......2005-04-26

I learned in grade school that the first evidence of art in human race was cave painting in France. Art has always been influenced by music, for example Piet Modrian loved boogie woogie jazz. You could speculate what music those cave artists had playing in your head when they painted or you could listen to Animal Collective. The primal pounding, kinetic out-of-world pinging and the echo fuzz based guitar interplay dance with a squeaking voice to create a celebration of weirdness. Those cave painters probably came across some magic root or mushroom that altered their perception of the world. This in turn change their music's pitch and time signatures randomly. Chanting and squirking like little extinct creatures adds to the Animal Collective charm. Don't miss this record.

5 out of 5 stars The best crystal bowl cd ever? Yeah right..........2007-02-17

That's what I said as I read the reviews here and clicked over to the author's website... so I reluctantly handed over my cash with little expectation, and well, I have to say... I agree!

Frankly, I was a little surprised, I love this kind of music and my last purchase of Stephen Halpern's Crystal Bowls was disappointing to say the least as it was filled with synthesizers and other cheesy New Age effects. This one is not and I wouldn't even lump it with a New Age tag (as the product description has). It' just truly beautiful music. The resonance is wonderful and the first chakra track is great for getting me, or my space back into alignment. Simply put it on in the background and clear your space. Wonderful! The other tracks on the CD have beautiful touches including shamanic instruments like the Buffalo drums, rattles, native flutes, rain sticks and other instruments. All appropriately added, expertly played and NO New Age cheese. What's interesting about it is that the CD recorded in one evening with no manipulations. I love reading books and listening to audio of people that have opened their heart - you can feel that in the work... in a similar way I think this is transmitted through music and it most definately is here.

I have since recommended and raved about this CD to all my friends. If you're a healer with a practice, you're going to want it for background music or just clearing your space. For everyone else, it's wonderful for relaxation and coming back into balance (put on your headphones for a real treat) or just some soothing music to play after a hard day or most definately for people who are not feeling well.

Other crystal bowl CDs I like include Benjamin Iobst Seven Metal Singing Bowls of Tibet and Crystal Voices by Deborah Van Dyke. Daniel Goleman's work is also fantastic - Chakra Dance, Chakra Chants and his Om CD (although all his work is good).

I highly recommend this beautiful CD. There are extra touches, with different instruments so if you're using it purely for meditation, that may distract you (as some other reviewers seem to have experienced). That is, I guess, a matter of personal preference - some people would be okay with the other instruments. It's the kind of CD where you that makes you go and buy everything the artist has ever produced. Of the hundreds of the healing type CDs I have, this is, and will remain, well and truly at the top of the heap. This might just be... the best crystal bowl CD ever!

5 out of 5 stars Very good for meditation.......2007-01-11

I listened to this during my hospital stay on my iPod because I could not sleep. It helped me immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Healing and Soothing Sounds!.......2006-11-03

This CD, just like all Crystal Vibrations productions, is pure healing. I can always count on the first track (Chakra Alignment) to bring me back into balance and alignment. I also use this disc as a space clearing tool for my home... the high vibrations resonate throughout, leaving my space feeling warm and wonderful. A multi-purpose musical adventure... how can you resist?

5 out of 5 stars Wow, Raising the Vibe!!.......2005-11-23

Pretty incredible music that makes everything I do while listening seem to happen effortlessly. It shifts and "tunes up" the energy in the room and in me! The Chakra alignment is like a warm up to the magic of all the other instruments that weave in and out of the singing bowls. So you can stay really focused and present or drift off into deeply meditative states. Listening to the soothing music on this CD is one of the best prescriptions you can give yourself! If you want to journey to the far reaches of the universe, treat your self to their CRYSTAL PORTAL CD and get Journey to Wholeness for taking care of everything else!!

5 out of 5 stars Lighten Up, Chill Out and Recharge.......2005-10-17

This is my favorite of all the meditation and singing crystal bowl music I own and I have a huge collection. Initially, I used it for meditation in the morning before work and then again when I got home. It left me calm for the day and recharged at night. Then I thought to put it on while paying bills and doing stressful chores. The resonance of the crystal bowl tones had an immediate effect. I was able to focus and breathe with ease while I completed my tasks. The sound quality is superb and you get all the beautiful overtones that can only come on a live recording. And the effect is lasting. For a real vacation, listen to this CD with headphones.

Best re-issue of 2006 by far. Originally released on vinyl only, only 300 copies were pressed. Now everyone has access to it! A glimpse back into Animal Collective's noisy-er days, these are some of the first recordings they did. All of the songs are great and including a live version of "Lablakely Dress" (a song from their first album, Danse Manatee). Greatest band of all time. Buy it now and say you heard their first material before everyone hops on the bandwagon, which is likely to happen following their upcoming release.

4 out of 5 stars Hollinndagainaandagainandagain..........2006-11-01

Strictly speaking, "Hollinndagain" is not a new Animal Collective album. It's their only live performance, recorded several years ago and previously only available for a limited printing. Only on vinyl. It was sort of the Holy Grail for Animal Collective fans.

Well, fortunately that's done, since this live album has finally come out on CD. And only mild tinniness shows that it is a life performance, as Animal Collective buzzes, bangs, and wobbles through a string of eerie songs -- this is nicely solid, atmospheric music.

It starts off slow, with a soft fizzing noise, as if the band is setting up in front of an open mike. The buzzing gets louder and is laced with synth, and slowly segues into a hesitant little pop melody that slowly falls silent... and explodes back into the raucous, plaintive "Pride and Fight." It sounds like a tribal chant on acid.

They run through explosive percussion of "Forest Gospel," which sounds like someone let the Muppet Animal loose onstage, as someone mumbles intermittently. Then the band runs through a dreamlike psychedelic soundscape, trips back to a wavery chant song, and finally into an eerie darker song. It sounds like someone is sobbing... until it twists into a tangle of twisted squeaks and groans.

"Hollinndagain" is very much a child of Animal Collective's first proper album, which was dreamlike, creepy and sort of tribal. You hear that frequently here. But this live performance showed how they were starting to explore new sounds and new ways of presenting their bizarre experimental music.

Except for a faint echo on the vocals, you wouldn't even know this was a live performance. Their music blares out with explosive energy, and the softer songs are only a reprieve -- smashing drums, buzzing guitars, and a colourful smorgasbord of sound effects, from static to squeaky wheels to alarm clocks.

And the songs flow nicely into one another, without much audience noise -- I can only assume that the music stunned them into silence. The only flaw is the finale, "Pumpkin Gets A Snakebite" -- after the slow decline of the previous song, it's jarring to hear this raucous little song song smack you in the face.

The formerly rare "Hollinndagain" is a glimpse of the evolving Animal Collective back when it was young, and definitely an entertaining little album.

4 out of 5 stars White blues at its best?.......2004-05-03

The review below refers to the original Animal Tracks album from 1965 with a totally different song collection. This one looks like a compilation of the Eric Burdon & the Animals hits from 1966-68.

A couple of years ago at a party in Virginia I was dancing with a beautiful European girl to the Animals' "For Miss Caulker" song. The lady was just a putty in my hands, enjoying the rhythm and the wild singer's voice. When the song ended, she was about to leave the party with yours truly when I made a stupid remark that this was really a white band playing the blues. I got dropped like a hot potato and had to find my consolation listening to another gem from the album: "How You've Changed".

This is white blues at its best from 1965, seen from the perspective of Newcastle, England. Try these two songs with any European, they will go for it, whatever their sex orientation. And in the end, this is the best blues of 1965, seen from any point.

Today you can make an album with any song compilation. These two great songs will make your list for the ultimate swinging machine.

    5 out of 5 stars British R&B, Newcastle Style.......2005-10-12

Of the many bands that came out of the British R&B Boom of the 1960's, the Animals from Newcastle were arguably the best of the bunch. And this 2 on 1 CD from EMI - which compiles their two Columbia LPs, THE ANIMALS and ANIMAL TRACKS - gives one a good reason why. Listening to this CD, one notices that as a straightforward British R&B band, the Animals were among the more authentic because of their preference for the more leering tempos prefered by many of great American blues performers (listen to such tracks as "For Miss Caulker", "I Believe To My Soul", and "I'm Mad Again"). But like such contemporaries as the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds, they could rock out with the best of them (listen to "Around and Around" and "Roadrunner"). A must have for anyone who loves British R&B and/or happens to be a fan of the Animals. And I happen to be both.
