Centerfield
Editorial Reviews

Nine years in the making, Centerfield, the former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer-songwriter's return to the big leagues, is a tasteful piece of traditional rock values. "The Old Man Down the Road" is prime CCR-swamp boogie, while "Rock and Roll Girls" and the title track were mainstream '80s hits. Fogerty kept his Elvis Presley candle burning bright with "Big Train from Memphis" and his social commentary to the fore with "I Saw It on TV." He even took a swipe at his old label chief (who burned him of his CCR songwriting royalties) with "Zanz Can't Dance" (later retitled). --Rob O'Connor

The Return of John Fogerty.......2007-06-18
I always thought of Creedence Clearwater Revival as the John Fogerty Show. The band was driven by his aggressive, skilled guitar playing, his strong singing, and his songs, many of which are enjoyable, even if on a lightweight level.
So, on the strength of AOR hits like Rock and Roll Girls, and Centerfield, we got this CD. Fogerty remains a good, but lightweight talent. Best tunes are the aforementioned Centerfield, one of his best, most enjoyable songs, and the often-played Rock and Roll Girls. Vanz Cant Danz is an interesting tune-tale about a pick pocket. Other than that, the overplayed "Old Man Down The Road" is recycled Creedence, Mr.Greed is an uncharacteristic whine about the evil boss man, and I saw it on TV is a lightweight commentary on the media.
If you really crave Fogerty, this is a good album; otherwise, opt for the livelier collection "Premonition."
Fogerty.......2007-06-10
Great value. If you are into the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.
Good Music for almost anyone........2007-02-08
Anyone who likes any Creedance Clearwater songs will like this CD and probably any John Fogerty Music. There is one song, "I Saw it on TV", in particular that is strait from a creedance Tune, it's unmistakable if you know creedance music. John Fogerty is just one of those people that is Gifted with musical ability and that is obviouse when you hear his music. The Old Man Down the road, Centerfield and Rock and Roll Girls are Classics.
A Unique Sound, Great Guitar Work And A Singer With A Social Conscience!.......2006-09-12
This album shows just what a unique talent John Fogerty truly is. He goes from the Country "chicken pickin' guitar work on Big Train( From Memphis) all the way to the hard rocking Mr. Greed in which he lashes out at the way he was treated by certain record executives. I am also happy to say that his Anti War stance is alive and well as can be heard on the song "I Saw It On TV" where a Father grieves the loss of his son in a futile and unnecessary war which only boosted Corporate Profits. This album should be compulsory listening for any teenage aspiring guitarists and songwriters.Mr. Fogerty may have grown up in California but his heart is still in the Louisianna Bayous. Naturally 5 stars for this album and I would give it 10 if I could.
Don't Waste Your Money "Premonition Is the Best DVD J-F Made.......2006-07-18
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON ANY CD'S OR DVD'S JOHN FOGERTY HAS MADE.PREMONITION IS BY FAR THE MOST EXCELLENT OF ALL HIS DVD'S.THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER ONE TO TAKE IT'S PLACE.HAVE IT LOVE IT.NOTHING I EVER BOUGHT IN DVD'S" BY JOHN FOGERTY WILL COMPARE TO PREMONITION.I GIVE IT A 10 PLUS.

brilliant and subtle take on hypocricy and deceit on"TV".......2003-05-22
I recently purchased used cassete specifically for saw it on tv. it made me reflect on his masterful subserviseness and his diversionary tactics used to slip his contraversial material past would be censors in the ccr days. But being overly obsessive about lyrical meaning, I would appreciate any feedback on a couple of lines in the song. Is he sort of calling Ike a hypocrite pertainiing beware the... comments with the big black limousine phrase. And also, I don't quite get the chained my mind to an endless tomb and took my only son from me. And the "cover" was it a specific incident? He was way ahead of the curve in the "American Dream" motif as anyoune who listens to alt country knows is probably the main theme of the genre.
Fogerty Hits A Homerun.......2000-10-09
John Fogerty was the driving force behind maybe the best American rock band of all time, Creedence Clearwater Revival. After the group disbanded in 1972, Fogerty released an album of country music covers under the moniker of the Blue Ridge Rangers in '73 and his self-titled "debut" album in '75. Then due to legal hassles with his record label, Fantasy Records, Fogerty went on a self-imposed exile until he resurfaced with Centerfield in '85. The years off didn't hurt Fogerty as Centerfield is an incredible album. The record kicks off with "The Old Man Down The Road" which easily could have been on album like Green River. It is classic CCR swamp rock and Fogerty's vocals are raspy and well seasoned and that adds to the song's spooky feel. "Rock & Roll Girls" is a good rocker while "Big Train" is an Elvis tribute. "I Saw It On TV" is the most underrated song on the album. It is a look back on the innocent time of the 50's & 60's, when we were naive enough to believe that everything we saw on TV was true. "Searchlight" has a r&b feel to it while the title track reminds us of our youth when baseball ruled the sporting world the Mantle, Mays, DiMaggio and others were the kings. The album isn't all about days of innocence and warm feelings, it contains two of Fogerty's angriest songs, "Mr. Greed" & "Zanz Can't Dance" (retitled due to a lawsuit from Saul Zanz). They take on his former boss and mentor and showed that he hadn't gotten over the bitter legal problems. They kind of bring down the overall feel of the record, but not enough to keep this album from being nothing short of a classic.
Put Me In ,Coach!.......2000-07-05
AAfter a nine year hiatus from the music scene, former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman John Fogerty gave us this pot of gold named Centerfield .Age had not robbed Fogerty of his lyrical prowress, nor his ability to catch you with a memorable hook. The opening track,THE OLD MAN DOWN THE ROAD,transports you to swamp and gator country before you have time to blink.ROCK 'N'ROLL GIRLS was a well deserved hit.BIG TRAIN FROM MEMPHIS is a heartfelt tribute to Elvis. We are transported back to 50's/60's USA in I SAW IT ON TV.Coporate America gets a boot to the face with MR GREED. SEARCHLIGHT is swamp rock with electro-drums. CENTERFIELD is a song for every true baseball fanatic.I CAN"T HELP MYSELF is a slice of happiness.ZANZ CAN'T DANZ is a jibe at his former record label boss at Fantasy. The only thing I do not like on this record are those damn electro-drums!However,this album is a worthy addition to any Creedence collector.
Fogerty's best album of the eighties!.......2000-04-23
After his departure from CCR in the late 70's John Fogerty became the most accomplished singer & songwriter solo artist in the world. 1985's Centerfield brings back Fogerty's own creedence transition faze rock'n'roll roots and his most successful masterpiece CD album like any other musician has ever done. Songs include from Fogerty are "The Old Man Down The Road", "Big Train From Memphis" and "Rock And Roll Girls"!
A Classic Recording........2000-03-18
I remember getting the tape of this album in the summer of 1985, when I was 12. I thought then, and I think now, that this is John Fogerty's best post-CCR recording. Maybe it's because the formula he used on Centerfield is similar to what he did with CCR. But, in 1985 it was very refreshing after not hearing that sound for many years. It still holds up 15 years later too. Great songs like "The Old Man Down the Road" which is directly related to CCR's "Run Through the Jungle" proved that John could do it again. Other gems like "Rock and Roll Girls" and "Centerfield" showed how much fun rock and roll could be again. The other non-hits like "Mr. Greed", "Big Train From Memphis", "I Saw It On T.V.", "Searchlight" and "Vanz Kant Danz" round out the cd. A nice snapshot of American life all in 9 tightly produced and played songs. Centerfield is a must have for any rock collector.
