Easily among Van Morrison's least successful albums, Common One is probably also his least understood. Arriving in the wake of the far more concise, focused Into the Music, this 1980 project found Morrison making a sweeping left turn toward the open-ended, jazz-fueled vamps and spiritual questing of his impressionistic classic, Astral Weeks, 12 years earlier. The disc contains only six songs, several woefully uneven, and fans of his tautly constructed, soul-inflected '70s work could only scratch their heads, yet the heightened horn colorations and pre-industrial imagery of the opener, "In Haunts of Ancient Peace," are a signpost to Morrison's thematic preoccupations in the decade to follow. Even more seminal is "Summertime in England," which sets sail for the "Astral" plane and stays largely on course thanks to the horn section of Mark Isham and Pee Wee Ellis, and Morrison's own hallucinatory incantation to his bardic precursors. Without these brave journeys, Morrison's soul-searching '80s trips would have sounded far different. --Sam Sutherland

I bought this album as an LP in the early 80's. I paid $1.99 from the CUT-OUT BIN (do they do cut-outs of CD's?). I bought it primarily for the exceptional 'Haunts of Ancient Peace' - because of the trumpet part mainly. After recording this track to a compilation tape, I had never listened to the LP again - until last night.
I was listening to Miles Davis live at the Plugged Nickel club (Green Dolphin Street and So What) and a notion came over me to listen to Common One.
After being deceived by the vast majority his output since Veedon Fleece (the only album I found really fulfilling since was Avalon Sunset), I finally appreciated Common One for what it was. I strongly recommend any fan of Van's who prefers the jazz of his 70's albums' to that of his 90's and recent work, this is a lost gem - found again. It's only when I directly compared it to one of the jazz greats that I recognized its true quality.

Many people dislike this album because of its length (it's nearly an hour, and was released during the LP era. An hour long LP was unheard of back then). There are no real "singles", and 2 of the tracks, Summertime in England and When Heart Is Open, run around 15 minutes. I think this is progressive Celtic soul. The songs seem short, because they are so well done. Summertime in England is my favorite. I memorized the lyrics when it came out (nearly 300 words), and I still sing along to it. The music is so passionate, richly atmospheric, and full of depth that it feels like a short album. I think every Van fan should listen to this again. This turned me on to Morrison, and it belongs in the top five Van Morrison albums...

Casual Van fans know that his best stuff was in the last 60s/1970s, in the late 70s and for all of the 1980s his albums weren't so good, and that Van has returned for form in recent years.
So Common One sucks, right!?!?
Look, this is a great album. It's not a pop album at all. Don't expect Domino or Wild Nights or anything like that. It's not preachy, though. It's this beautiful study of musical spaces and moods as opposed to killer riffs. It absolutely transports you.
It's a cheap CD. If you're considering this, it's a great CD for Sunday morning in bed, any time when it's raining, and during nighttime driving.

The opener 'In Haunts of Ancient Peace' is the most beautiful work of music I've ever heard. And I'm not even a fan of Van Morrison, which means that I know parts of his recorded music, but I'm not especially touched by it in general. But this work is something else, it's a very sincere and profound masterpiece, and nothing ever recorded in music history can compare with it. That's how good it is. You know, when you want to describe music, you usually talk in levels: a fine rocker, a moody jazz piece, great blues, heavenly vocals; there is music for everyone's taste, and there is lots of good music around for everyone to appreciate. But in the end, when you have discovered loads of music that you appreciate, where can you go next? You can keep on searching all around, untill you finally find your 'buddha', the ultimate goal of your (musical) quest. I found my Buddha right here on this album...
There's nothing wrong with your CD player.......2004-05-17
"When Heart is Open" may be the most excruciatingly boring fifteen minutes of music I have ever listened to: a slow, liveless reading of poor poetry. Most of the other songs aren't much better. At first listen, I thought I had a problem with a defective CD -- surely nobody intended music to sound like this.
I'll give this CD two stars only because "Summertime in England" has a few good moments when the brass section kicks in and it swings.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Common's skills are unique, and his style is complete, but his most effective talents are in constructing an album of material that listens like a book. One Day is a fully realized, start-to-finish memoir of a Chicago-based African American male, and it's equal to any challenge from the literary form. To listen to One Day is to pass through a multifaceted relationship between a father and a son, an expecting father and an impending son, and a man and his spirit, all set in the wake of a close friend's death. (This album is deep.) One Day features cameos from the cream of the hip-hop crop, including De La Soul, Lauryn Hill (the Fugees), Erykah Badu, and an indelible Canibus. After the Hip Hop milestone album "Ressurection" back in 1994, Common would decide to show his listeners a more mature, introspective side of himself. Common was all grown up on this album, and no longer doing childish things. He would make the song "Retrospect For Life" with Lauryn Hill about him having a daughter and how it would take on responsibility. You can feel the transition that he was making here on this album, as if he was becomming a new person. Something must have happened in '95 or '96 that made the decision for Common to change and appreciate life.
More of those introspective tracks that Common was journeying into were "G.O.D. (Gaining One's Definition)" as he and Cee-Lo would rhyme about religion in life and what it's for. "Reminding Me (Of Self)" with Chantay Savage is another introspective side of Common that showed him speaking his mind. And personally "All Night Long" is just beautiful with the vocals of Erykah Badu.
But there was just more that introspect for Common. There was the boom bap side of Common as well. "Getting Down At The Ampethetre" with De La Soul is one of the funkiest tracks on this album. "Making A Name For Ourselves" Canibus outshines Common with his dope lyrics (c'mon people Canibus outshines almost everyone he colabs with, so this is normal). So it's not all introspect on this album. And whats a Common album without the appearances of Lonnie "Pops" Lynn at the end ("Pop's Rap II")?
Personally, I find it a big jump from "Ressurection" to "One Day...". This is a mature side of Common. We've probably gotten used to it since "Like Water For Chocolate" came out, so it shouldn't come from left field. This is one of those CDs that you can vibe to real easily, and I'm sure people will enjoy. Some say this was his breakthrough LP, and I believe so, because it's introduced the side of him that we've all gotten used to.

Common is one of the best rappers hands down. I think this CD is good but "Like Water for Chocolate" is sicker. One track that you heads need to hear is a white label edit on vinyl by Karu featuring Common called "Faces on the Mural". This is deep house at it's finest with the ripe vocals of Common. You guys should check out Karu's "Amazing Place" CD for some great deep jazzy house & trip-hop. Wow! I can't believe it. I just bought the Illform "Next Level Fusion" & Quentin's Ladder "Delusion" on here and realized Quentin Allen produced all these including Karu "Amazing Place". Don't be fooled! This definitely is not Quentin's first CD. It is the third CD and maybe the best. People need to check out this music. The jazz & hip-hop influences are all there and come together nicely. My favorite track is "Out to Get Mine" Hot EPMD vocal snippet. Another great track is "Sketch the Play". You'll here a great texture of sounds too. Rhodes & acoustic pianos, synths, deep basslines, great vocal samples, tight house beats, awesome jazz solos and nice chords. The Karu sound is like deep house by Hanna, Office Gossip, Miguel Miggs, and Chuck Love. If you want to here a great producer at work, get Quentin Allen latest offering "Amazing Place".
Retrospect For Life.......2006-03-26
One day is one of Common's best albums. Common's lyrics are always rich and detailed and the issues he address range far more than today's typical rap topics about hoes, cars, money and other materialism. One of my favorite tracks on this album is Retrospect for life which is more or less a song about abortion with Lauryn Hill singing the chorus which is a semi-remake of Stevie Wonder's "I never dreamed you'd leave in summer". The Cd's just plain tight.
COMMON'S MATURITY POINT..........2006-02-26
A lot of emotions come to mind for me when I hear this album. For Common, this was a true signaling point in his lifetime. On "One Day", the brother formerly known as Sense chose to tone things down a bit and adress what's important over mellow, but soulful beats (which would later become the blueprint for the Soulquarians), such as the endearing "G.O.D. (Gaining One's Definition)" feat. Cee-Lo and the warm, remenicient feel of "Reminding Me (Of Sef)", which was dedicated to the good times with his departed friend. But these are greatly outshined by the insightful "Retrospect For Life" feat. Ms. Lauryn Hill, where he speaks on his fears and hopes of becoming a father for the first time. On some parts of the album, however, he tries a bit too hard to get gutter ("Gettin' Down In The Ampitheater" feat. De La Soul), but most of the time he's on point, and gets razor on the cuts "Hungry" and "Making A Name For Ourselves", the latter in which Cannibus gives one of his best verses you'll ever hear. Taking time out to flex a story, the three part "Stolen Moments" tracks tells of Common getting robbed when he gets back from a trip and goes to show you can't trust anybody. The album comes to a finishing close with the one and only Pops ("Pop's Rap pt. II: Fatherhood") giving praise to his son and prayer for his child. Before I heard this album, I didn't really have a clear path in life, but it helped me discover what's really important and not to sleep on responsibility. Cop this most definitely. END.
Up and down..........2006-01-07
There are some amazing moments on this record. I find myself freaking out to three songs in a row, and waiting for the fourth song to end. The De La collaboration is weak; it's got the great Wild-Style instrumental but the chorus is obnoxious. Some of the more R&B-toned tracks fall flat in my opinion.

Good job.......2005-08-26
I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.
Masterful!.......2005-06-15
This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.
Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07
I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Aaron Copland made numerous recordings of his own music, including an extensive series for CBS during the 1960s and '70s, mostly with London orchestras. He was not an especially proficient conductor--consequently, the performances he conducted often lacked pace and rhythmic punch. His last recordings of his most popular scores have been reissued by Sony on an exceptionally well-remastered 3-CD set. These accounts do a good job of conveying the overall shape of the pieces, and they deliver telling characterizations of many episodes. Details emerge that are lost in some other accounts, and there is an appealing gentleness and sweetness to the approach. But the readings do not have as much grip as those of Bernstein and Slatkin, among others, and in spite of the authority they automatically possess, they are not necessarily preferable. --Ted Libbey

Bought this for Concerto for Clarinet.......2007-07-14
The sum is greater than the parts. This is a great Copland collection and shows his diversity. Yet as divers and the three CD are they are all distinctively Copland. Benny Goodman is usually associated with jazz yet he was also diverse in his career. "Concerto for Clarinet, Strings, and Harp & Piano" is a mantra that will carry you to a timeless place.
An added plus is the many other popular pieces that you know you heard but did not realize it was Copland especially the music from movies.
You may have to play the set a few times before being able to recognize the different tracks by name. The down side is many of Copland's works are outside of the date range of this collection.
Aaron Copland: Populist and Conductor.......2005-03-29
If you want a prime collection of Copland's more accessible works, this is it. Yes, it's true that Bernstein's recordings of individual pieces are often bolder and livelier; but this set offers the composer's own authoritative view of his work, and for that reason alone it is priceless. In addition, it includes virtually all the orchestral pieces he composed during his "populist phase," from El Salon Mexico (1936) to the Clarinet Concerto (1948). You won't find some of these lesser-known gems, such as An Outdoor Overture (1938) or Letter from Home (1944, written--like Rhapsody in Blue--for Paul Whiteman), on typical single-disc Copland compilations. I'd even go so far as to claim this as one of the four indispensable compilations of American instrumental music from the first half of the twentieth century (the others on my list--in case anyone cares--are Joshua Rifkin playing Scott Joplin, Oscar Levant playing Gershwin, and the Blanton-Webster band recordings of Duke Ellington).
What amazing riches flowed from Copland's pen during the period covered by these three discs! Billy the Kid (1939), Quiet City (1940), Our Town (1940), Fanfare for the Common Man (1942), Rodeo (1942), Lincoln Portrait (1942), Appalachian Spring (1944), and the Third Symphony (1946)--all are here. Some of this music is so familiar, so deeply ingrained in America's cultural consciousness, that we might be tempted to take it for granted. But imagine how much poorer the American concert repertoire would be without it. It's almost impossible, at this point, to conceive of a time when this wonderful music--which is to America roughly what Mussorgsky's music is to Russia, Grieg's to Norway, and Falla's to Spain--didn't exist. It was during the dozen years covered by this collection that Copland pulled away from the pack of his talented contemporaries (Hanson, Thomson, Harris, etc.) and, in a way, but with greater technical sophistication, filled the void left by the tragically early death of Gershwin, whose heyday, 1924-1935, immediately preceded the composition of the works on this collection.
The ballet music is all presented here in the familiar orchestral suites Copland arranged. Most of the selections are played by the London Symphony Orchestra, although the New Philharmonia and the just-plain Philharmonia get cracks at a few key works. The last-named orchestra, for instance, takes on the biggest piece on the program, Copland's Third, the closest thing American music has to a Beethoven's Ninth (although the work's sublime rhetoric has never completely convinced me--it's neither my personal favorite by Copland nor my favorite American symphony . . . but it sure has its moments). In addition to the fine orchestral playing, another treat is that Henry Fonda narrates the Lincoln Portrait--an almost inevitable pick, given the virtually mythic way his acting style embodied the American spirit and the fact that he had portrayed the sixteenth president in John Ford's classic film Young Mr. Lincoln (1939).
The set concludes with what, over the years, has become my favorite work by Copland, the Concerto for Clarinet, Strings, Harp, & Piano, written for and performed here by surely the last century's greatest clarinetist, Benny Goodman. This work effects a concise synthesis between Copland's mature style and his earlier jazz stylings from the 1920s; in addition, the searing eloquence of the opening slow movement seems to me the most profound lyrical writing Copland ever achieved. Stoltzman's recording, ironically enough, swings harder than the king of swing's, but this collaboration between the composer and the man who commissioned it is for the ages.
The only major "populist" scores written after the period this collection covers are the film scores to The Red Pony (1948) and The Heiress (1949). Both can be acquired on an essential Leonard Slatkin CD for RCA. And since this collection doesn't include chamber music, the great Violin Sonata (1943), a kind of more intimate counterpart to Appalachian Spring, will have to be sought elsewhere. (One good option is Gil Shaham/Andre Previn on DG.) A serious Copland collector will also want to grab the other two volumes of the Copland Collection itself. The early set features important works such as the Organ Symphony (1924), Music for the Theater (1925), and the Short Symphony (1932)--but both of the other collections also include long, thorny pieces like the early Symphonic Ode and the late Connotations that can be rather difficult for the average enthusiast to enjoy.
Most of the essential, universal Copland is to be found on this second installment of the Copland Collection, and I would definitely recommend it as the place to start exploring Copland's magnificent contribution to American music. It has been a wonderful and treasured companion of mine for many years, and it also serves to conjure up a timely and inspiring vision of open prairies, nocturnal cityscapes, and the populist, humane values that America should, ideally, epitomize.
Tribute to Lincoln.......2001-10-28
I purchased this set of Copeland CD's because I wanted the Tribute to Lincoln narrated by Henry Fonda. This is a masterful recording especially for Americans in this time. The Tribute sends chills down my spine whenever I her it. My greatest joy however, was how much I have enjoyed all of the CD's in the set. I tend to be much more of a classical listener. I have heard Copeland but not in any organized fashion. This set has brought a new and delightful experience to my listening options.
A great way to get your dose of Copland...........2000-06-30
The 2nd of this three CD collection is wonderful. My favorite though is the third one. Doesn't mean this isn't good. This Sony Copland Collection set is worth the money for. Copland is sooo much more then Appalachian Spring, Fanfare for the Common Man, Rodeo, etc... But you get a lot of typical Copland on these CDs. Songs we all know and love. But there are some unfamiliar good ones too. Concerto for Clarinet took me by storm. So did Letters from Home. Good quality, good booklet, good recording, good playing (how Copland got the London Symphony to play something right I will never know), good everything. It's not perfect because it doesn't compete with THE best Copland like the third CD set of this collection, or the The Tendeer Land. Oh, these three CD sets don't cover all Copland, but it does for the most part. It doesn't have many chamber works, two choral works, and his two operas. You can cover some of those with the full version of Tender Land and of Second Hurricane (which also comes with the choral work, In the Beginning). But this is a good series. I highly recommend it!
Well balanced retrospective, -or- Listen to this!.......1999-08-11
Mr. Copland's works, as always, are exceptional This album, which consists of his work both as a composer and as a conductor, brings his music to life in a way no other conductor can. This is a well mastered and well produced work and worth the listen. To hear Arron Copland's music as he intended is wonderfull.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Moved to tears.......2004-03-18
Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27
John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career,and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China,the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer,which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original,worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!
