Legal Stuff Apart.......2007-04-21
To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

Level 42's great beginnings...but a bit shorter than expected.......2006-09-13
A reissue of two great early releases by the band Level 42. The album "Level 42" is far and away the stronger of the two, (and one of my all-time personal favorite albums) and contains songs, "Love Games", "Starchild", "Dune Tune", that would be considered classics for the band throughout their career. Instrumentals such as "43" and "Heathrow" are some of the tightest examples of funk/fusion ever performed. The packaging of the album along with "The Early Tapes" adds a nice retrospecive quality to the collection, although the songwriting and diversity of material on "The Early Tapes" is not as strong as that on "Level 42".
The newly designed insert is well done and informative, although Wally Badarou's photo from the original sleeve has been omitted, which I'd always felt was such a nice addition, having been the "Fifth '42'". Where I really have an issue is with the choice of tracks used for this "remastered" edition. It seems that in place of the full-length versions of songs which would later become the band's first singles off the album, "Turn It On", "Love Games" and "Starchild", the decision was made to use shortened mixes which either fade prematurely or eliminate entire musical passages, such as the piano solo break on "Love Games", which would seem to be glaring ommissions to any Level 42 afficinado. These are not as short as the single mixes, yet they fall, on average, 1 to 2 minutes shorter than the versions found on the original release of the CD twenty years ago. Why? If I were to compare, it would appear that the engineers used the masters from the vinyl LP version which itself contained shorter versions of some songs due to limitations of space.
This may be a small quibble, and doesn't in fact ruin these discs, as the fidelity of the recordings is indeed excellent. But if time limitations on the CD forced them to shorten such great tracks for this "best of the best remastered edition" of what many believe to be their finest album, I could perhaps have lived without bonus cuts like "Goodbye Ray Schmidt-Volk", which seem included merely for novelties' sake. I will still cherish my '80s version of the disc, as this remaster is something of a missed opportunity.
A super package, these 2 jazzfunk classics.......2005-03-12
Do not take these 2 albums for the hit machine Level 42 became later on. It's the awesome rhythm section consisting of bass player Mark King and drummer Phil Gould that drives this high-class jazzfunk piece of music.
Favorites: "43" is a long instrumental track fueled by an awesome bass, "Why are you leaving" a superb ballad with a crispy saxophone, "Heathrow" is atmosperic as an airport (!?), while of course "Love games" with it's trademark bass riff needs no introduction. "Dune tune" has a juicy buildup with the bass and guitar trading places (sounds unique).
Though less consistent, the bass is even juicier on the best tracks of their debut album. The tracks "Sandstorm", "Love meeting love", "Woman" and "88" are the standouts for me.
TURN IT ON!.......2004-09-30
The self titled debut album of Level 42 is seamlessly
brilliant and I DON'T care what anyone else thinks! The first
three songs are fantastic-the breezy uptempo soul of "Turn It On",the funky instrumental "43" and the highly sensual R&B
of "Why Are You Leaving"."Almost There" and "Love Games" are
slamming uptempo funk with fantastic guitar licks while the
pulsing "Heathrow" and the deeply grooving "Dune Tune" take funk
fusion to new depths!"Starchild" ends off as the album begins with a heavily crafted funky R&B-pop song featuring great
keyboard work by Mike Lindup.
'The Early Tapes' is it's own beast altogether.Level 42
hadn't yet polished there sound and while the caribbean-inflected
groove of "Love Meeting Love" and the lilting "Wings Of Love" are
great early single material the album is dominated by bassy
funk-fusion such as "Sandstorm","Woman","88" and the marvelous
"Mr.Pink",but those are a sure fire treasure for funk fans!
Sadly even in their own native UK Level 42 were marketed as a
pure new-wave/pop band, even before they started commercializing
their music at all!And the fact that both CD's in this twofer
have nothing to do with new wave and everything to do with soul
pop-R&B and most importantly funk makes their label's marketing
plan an absolute disgrace to everything that this brilliant band
stood for!Level 42 should have been the group that would bring
the sound of jazz funk/fusion to the masses with their clever
songwriting, slick style and wonderful instrumentation-much as Steely Dan did several years earlier. But that never happened to you,the open eared listener, will have to imagine what could have been yourself by owning these two albums-a couple of the most accomplished of this era!
High level of explosives hi- lites double CD compilation.......2004-01-20
By C.S.
The British Invasion that hit all shores in the 1980's had many an artist that proved to be disposable from it's initial stages and in the long run over a time tested period - from Dead Or Alive to Bucks Fizz to Rick Astley and so on.
But some acts material resonate in a timeless and seamless mannner- hence the four piece from Southhampton known as Level 42 that bear that prestigious distinction.
Named best band in Britain and best group overall seven consecutive years, the release of the "Early Tapes" in 1982 on the heels of their sucessful debut LP Level 42, soldifies the band's powerful foothold in music history.
Upon the re- release of of their albums over the years in re-mastered form, the double CD package of the first album and the Early Tapes are a both a collective treat and an absolute steal for both semi and die- hard fans, and a great place to start for those looking to get a learn something about the group.
The first album contains a hybrid of commercial accessibility fused with the slap bass playing exploits of Mark King and the soaring falsetto vocals of keyboardist Mike Lindup.
They work well in tandem on the band's first release,"Turn It On" and combine eforts well with the drumming of Phil Gould on the jazz- fusion inflected instrumental "43".
Swirling and innovative keyboard melodies and synth effects high- light the radio friendly tunes "Love Games, Starchild", and the power ballad "Why Are You Leaving",which builds from an innocent trot to a full blown sprints as King whips out this bass plucking attack, giving the song a different look against the grain of standard love songs, a trademark that created their vast legions of followers.
Compared their compelling live renditions the original studio version of "Almost There" and "Foundation and Empire" which is one of the five bonus tracks offered on this re- mastered version, these tracks prove to too technical and in the case of the latter, poorly recorded despite the technological touch ups.
Overall, their first album was a 3 1/2 to four star effort in retrospect, but the strength of this double disec is bolstered by the material provided on "The Early Tapes".
Released in 1982 due to public demand for more Level 42 music after they intially burst on the scene, the tracks were, in actuality, recorded in 1979 and 1980 before the band secured a record deal.
Mark King's percussive style of fusion funk bass playing is in full force and he puts an emphatic stamp on the Level 42 name from the opening bell on the album's opening stanza, the instrumental "Sandstorm".
Though Lindup's keyboards sound department store like in spots,he offers smooth backdrops in tandem with King while the guitar playing of Boon Gould is of higher prominence versus their more commercialized efforts. He unleashes a strong rhythm guitar solo on "Theme To Margaret",sonic treatments on the live versions of "Sandstorm" and "Mr Pink",two sparkling live gems that are among the five bonus tracks included in the new and improved package here.
R>The same distinction holds true for drum playing brother, Phil. His smooth finesse and driving back-beats help shape the sound of the "Early Tapes".
"Wings of Love, Love Meeting Love and the funky and sentimental bass plucking atmosphere that canvasses "Autumn"( Paradise Is Free)are delicious main dishes that add spice and balance to the raw and edgy nature of the record.
These distinctions, coupled with the explosive cohesion of their live material, make this a five star disc. Though there are a couple of bumps that may pre-clude some from making that assessment, the overall net effect of hearing,in so many words, THE REAL LEVEL 42, make this package of "Level 42" and "The Early Tapes" in it's combined format,a solid five star record.

2nd disc mostly for hardcore Level 42 fans.......2003-01-26
The 2nd disc will mainly entertain the fancy of true-blue Level 42 fans (like me) but *may* not appeal to your average music listener. Why? Too much "sameness" -- the trademark Mark King thumb-slap & pick bass lines, heavy Lindup synths and mostly instrumental improv. fun. Like I said, L42 fans will love this, however. One note: the live versions of "Mr. Pink" and "88" are even better on the double live LP "Physical Presence." Their studio versions here are just so-so.
On the other hand, L42 and average music fans alike will delight to the first disc, self-titled "Level 42." Every tune is thoroughly enjoyable, those w/vocals and those without. "43" is one of my absolute favorite L42 instrumental jams (the crescendoing synth solo building to max pitch is outstanding), and likewise the instrumental "Dune Tune" showcases Mark King's bass talents (why he's the best bassist in the biz). "Love Games" and "Why Are You Leaving" exemplify the L42 trademark "sound" best -- tuneful pieces essentially built around King's awesome bass playing.

Unnecessary to own for Beatles fans.......2005-04-08
At the time this was made, this was one of the few places to get these early recordings made by the Beatles in Hamburg, Germany. They acted as backing group to English rocker Tony Sheridan (who sounds much like a B-grade Elvis Presley). These early recordings are from the days when Pete Best was still behind the drumkit, instead of Ringo Starr.
HIGHLIGHTS:
The Beatles are only really here on 3 tracks, "Ain't She Sweet?" (where John actually sings lead), "Cry for a Shadow" (an instrumental written by the Beatles as a tribute to English star Cliff Richard's backing group The Shadows), and "My Bonnie", where the group really is only there as instrumental backing for Sheridan. This last single is a key piece to Beatles lore, as it was a fan seeking that song in Brian Epstein's NEMS record shop that led him to seek out the group. The rest, as they say, is history.
LOWS:
No real discernable lows so much as a general malaise. Outside of the 3 Beatles tracks, you get garage band versions of classic 50s numbers. You're better off with Little Richard, Dion, Chris Montez, etc etc etc.
BOTTOM LINE:
The 3 you really want this for are available on "Anthology 1" these days with other Fab Four rarities. The other performances aren't especially noteworthy, but if you're here because you're a big Sheridan fan, you may want to look at his Website. It looks like he still records. http://www.tony-sheridan.de/
Tony Sheridan.......2004-03-19
Tony is a good rocker and this CD is the album he recorded with The Beatles (re-issued in 1964 as "The Beatles 1st"). The best track is, of course , "My Bonnie", which was a top 10 hit in 1962.
Of historical note but much more Sheridan than Early Beatles.......2003-11-12
The value of "in the Beginning: The Early Tapes of the Beatles" is more in terms of music history than the actual music. Tony Sheridan earned his place in the story of rock 'n' roll when he recorded "My Bonnie" in 1961. The song was a decent little hit, but today it is remembered because it was the first studio session featuring the Beatles, albeit, as Sheridan's backing group. The Beatles recorded a few tracks with Sheridan in Hamburg in 1961. Those who pick this up think it has songs by the pre-Fab Four will, of course, be disappointed (it is still Pete Best and not Ringo Starr on drums). The playing and the songs are comparable to what eventually came out on the the first CD of the first volume of the Beatles' "Anthology" series. The songs are all pretty sedate covers of popular rock standards from the early years such as "Ain't She Sweet" and "Kansas City." Sheridan sings the lead on all of the songs but one, that being the first track, "Ain't She Shweet," where John Lennon does the singing. The second track, "Cry for a Shadow" is a driving instrumental piece written by Lennon and George Harrison. So the two songs that can legitmately be called Beatles songs are the first two tracks, although Paul McCarntey can be heard in the background on "My Bonnie," for what that is worth.
As for the rest, the Beatles back up Sheridan on a half dozen songs: "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Why, "If You Love Me, Baby," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "My Bonnie," and "Nobody's Child." The remaining five tracks are Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers, the original line up for which would have been Sheridan on vocals and guitar backed by guitarists Ken Packwood and Rick Richards, bassist Colin Melander, keyboardist Ian Hines and drummer Jimmy Doyle. However, none of those songs are particularly interesting. The attraction of this album is that you get to hear what John, Paul and George were like as musicians just a couple of years before they spearheaded the British Invasion and basically changed forever a little thing we like to call music. But if you have "Anthology 1" you already have the big three from this one.
DON'T BE FOOLED LIKE I WAS!.......2002-11-12
It is total trickery to put "The Beatles" on this CD cover. This is just Tony Sheridan and his other band. There are only two Beatles songs on the disc, and both are also on The Beatles' "Anthology 1". There are only two good things about this disc.
One: The track "My Bonnie" is complete, without the Paul McCartney interview at the beginning, as on the Anthology. That ruined it.
And two: It's in stereo.
Other than that, it is really bad. The songs are really bad and slow. Really bad 1950s type songs. Don't be lured into buying this like I was!
What a [poor bargain].......2002-10-27
These aren't the Beatles. This is Tony Sheridan. I'm only giving it one star cause it's stereo.

Album Description
2007 digitally remastered reissue of the British Funk/Jazz/Pop band's second release featuring one bonus track: 'Wings Of Love'. Although recorded before their debut album, this collection of early tracks by Mark King and co. were the actual recordings that helped them secure their contract with Polydor Records. They find the band in Jazz/Funk instrumental mode, led by the astounding bass playing of King and the ivory-tinkling of Mike Lindup. Polydor.

Three stars but a few gems........2006-07-31
Dont get me wrong I am a great Cat fan from the sixties but this compilation sounds dated even to my loving ears. However it also contains one of the most incredible ballads of all time in "Where are you?". Still today its sounds current and now and then I will burst forth with my humble version in the shower. No compilation will satisfy everyone but Cat Stevens gave us TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN etc from 71 onwards and should be in some hall of fame somewhere.
Lost it's uniqueness.......2003-06-13
Unfortunately, [or fortunately], all the sogns on here that were unique to this CD have been put on New Masters, which is a shame in the fact that this album lost it's uniqueness. Anyway, I'm so sleepy, Blackness of the night, Come on and dance, WHere are you?, what else could you want?
I LOVE IT!.......2003-05-09
WIth four tracks here appearing on Matthew and Son, The another eight are work from later in 67 and two are from'69. It's one of my favourite Cat albums. If not my favourite.
It starts off with his first song, I love my dog, which reached Number 28 in the British charts in 66. It's basically him an dhis Accoustic back up by Sixties ounding Trumpets, strings and so forth. THen comes The first cut is the deepest, a largely covered song. His version is one of his most emotional early ventures and sounds very sixties with electrig guitar, trumpets, strings, and a broken heart. A bad night is much the same actually, though it's introduction is accoustic. It's full of blaring trumpets and strings. It hit No 20 int he charts. THen comes I'm so sleepy which is a slow acoustic song backed up by a great orchestra and xylophone. It's very simple and could fit well on a later album. It's about fallign asleep. Then comes one of my personal Cat favourites, Blackness of the night, a Folk song backed up by an orchestra and organ. It's drumbeat is very nineties. It reminds me of THe Lighthouse families, Forever you and me. Then comes School is out off Matthew and Son, not on the British Vinyl original. Like A bad night it has a brief acoustic introduction before coming in with a teen symphony sound, like the others. The trumpet in it reminds of the one in Downtown. Then comes Northern WInd, which has a beautiful mouth organ section and a lot of strings and other orchestra instruments. THe lyrics are a bit dark and it's probably my least favourite on here. Someone else has described it as Celtic. THen comes another one of my personal favourites, View from teh top. It sounds very much like Phil Spector would do, full of strings, flutes, other orchestral instruments, emotional singing from Cat, concluded by a 20-25 second hendrix-style electric guitar solo. Is that Cat playing it. Then comes THe ROcker, Come on and Dance, off Matthew and SOn. I love it! It has soem sort of KEyboard/organ, Saxaphone, electric Guitar and bass, but it's somehow pleasant. THen comes a mezmerizing ballad, WHere are you? Which, I guess could be compared to fly me to the moon. It would fit well on something like Tea for the Tillerman or Teaser and the Firecat. It contains orchestration, a harpsichord and an acoustic guitar all the way through.
Oh no!, SOrry, My least favourite song on here is Granny. I find it boring but others might not. It's bluesy and very sixties, it sounds a bit like the maxwell smart tune in the third verse. Complete with strings, piano, Trumpets, stirngs and electric guitar. Then my third favourite Cat song. Moonstone. It sounds like something otu fo a sixties musical. It has harmonica, dramatic trumpets, other instruments and is about an archeaologist [is that spelt right?] whoo finds a moonstone. It sounds very sixties. THen comes the happy Ceylon City. It's words have depth and also has flutes, trumpets, strings, some sort of guitar and Cat isn't singing alone. THen comes Kitty, reaching 47 int eh British charts in 67. It's a bit more rocky than some of the others, with a great harmonica part, with unusual, ''I'll win in the end and party'' lyrics and other unusual instruments such as flutes and trumpets. He would have been a great teen symphony artist, but it's something he's not remembered for. I could rave about this CD all day but I'll give it 5/5
Excellent Debut Album By British Pop Star Of 1960's & 1970's.......2002-12-15
This is a fine CD of the earliest recordings of Cat Stevens, a sensitive young lad who apparantly liked to party (Kitty), but loved his dog (I Love My Dog) and Grandmother (Granny), before he began his journey to find the true meaning of life. Included are the brilliant First Cut Is The Deepest and a few excellent recordings: the up-tempo Kitty, I'm So Sleepy, and the ballad Where Are You. Why five stars for a CD containing several average to good songs; just listen to the Catman's hypnotic vocals.
You should consider purchasing this CD if you already have most of Cat's recordings of the 1970's.
Early Cat: a young hopeful shows potential.......2001-03-16
Discover Cat Stevens the old fashioned way, though his earliest singles and b-sides. This is a compilation of Cat's music written and released between 1966 and 1969. During this period he enjoyed great success with singles including "I Love My Dog", "Matthew and Son" and "The First Cut Is The Deepest", however other singles were released and they are included on this Import collection. One of my favorite Cat Stevens songs of all time was a b-side called "Where Are You". It's a beautiful, poignant, and totally magical ballad which admits: "I know I think alot, but sometimes it just doesn't help it only makes it worse. The more I think, the more I know, the more it hurts, with only solitude to greet me like a friend, where are you, where are you?" Great stuff portending a future as one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the sixties and seventies. IF you don't have all these songs, this is a worthwhile collection. If you have them only on vinyl (or like me on 45's that are warping even as we speak) this is a worthwhile collection. If you just discovered Cat Stevens on the VH1 "Behind the Music" special, this is a very worthwhile look into the roots of a gentle spirit who was "on his way to find out"

I LOVE IT, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!.......2001-05-25
I love this collection. I really do. It is such a delightful treasure trove of memories. It speaks to a fun period in history when the Beatles brought an original brand of music and delightful banter into the mainstream public.
In early 1964, the world was reeling from the aftermath of President Kennedy's untimely death (11/22/63) and the futility of the Vietnam War. Racial tensions and unemployment, then as now were societal ills that were in the forefront during the 1963-1964 period. The Beatles injected levity, original expression and just plain fun where it was sorely needed. Against such a stark historical backdrop, the Beatles were radiant, bright and just plain fun.
They were also trend setters. Their clothing styles and haircuts have been emulated by countless many people and their music continues to delight audiences. Their songs have been remade and they have proved time and again that they have permanent staying power. Emulation of their work and general appearance speak to a general affinity for them. After all, they did help define a generation and even now have a strong following. I think they are timeless classics.
This collection is such a treat. I really love it.
This Cd is the best one that I've ever heard.......1998-11-06
When I listened to the splendid sound of this CD, expecially the drum solo's were allright and the gitarsolo's and also the singing solo's were OK.

Customer Reviews:
Early eighties instrumental fusion-funk album.......1999-10-01
If you are a fan of Level 42 late albums, well then don't listen to this one. You must know that Level 42 hasn't always been a commercial pop-music performing band. This album is in fact completely different from what you ever heard before. You can easily trace in the sound, in the chords, in the riffs and in the elaborate drum-bass section that Level 42 were much more than a commercial-pop band. Fusion-funk is probably the nearest definition I can think about, but probably you'll understand better if I tell you that you can easily find the influence of jazz-fusion bands such as Weather Report, Reurn to Forever etc. It is also an essential album for the "slap-style" bass player, for Mark King is one of the renowed masters of this style.
