Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
The last hurrah of the original Santana band, which had stunned the world with its fiery performance at Woodstock two years before, Santana (frequently called "Santana III" so as not to confuse it with the group's eponymous 1969 debut) is an impressive combination of tightly constructed Latin-fueled pop songs ("No One to Depend On," "Everybody's Everything," "Everything's Coming Our Way") and sprawling jams ("Guajira," "Toussaint L'Overture," "Jungle Strut"). For his part, Carlos Santana hurls lightning bolts from his guitar throughout but offers opportunities for other band members, such as keyboardist Gregg Rolie and recently added guitarist Neal Schon (both of whom would rise to fame with Journey), a chance to shine as well. The 1998 reissue of this album adds three bonus tracks from a 1971 Fillmore West performance: "Batuka," "Jungle Strut," and "Gumbo." --Daniel Durchholz --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Release Except For Neal Schon.......2007-07-03

Santana III Legacy Edition is the last of the 3 great Santana Records before the band split and went "fusion." The obvious attraction here is the live at the Fillmore CD and what great sound. One thing old recordings have is that fantastic attention to the stereo landscape and with the size of this band and the percussion involved, it is truly a great listening experience - that is - until Neal Schon solos.

Do you like ear splitting high register solos? And not just once, but over and over again? And no low notes folks, just as high as they go? Then you will love the future Journey guitarist, NEAL SCHON!! I do realize that at 15 years of age it is quite an accomplishment to be in the Santana Band but why Carlos added him as a soloist is beyond me.

Even to this day I cannot stand him. NO imagination - just high register guitar wankings over and over and over again. Schon is okay in a nothing bank like Journey, but he is not in a league to be trading solos with Carlos Santana - kind of like - Larry Lee standing next to Jimi Hendrix. The problem is - Neal gets A LOT OF SOLOS!!!!!!

Anyway this is still a great release if you can blot out Neal.

5 out of 5 stars great upbeat music.......2007-03-10

I like the live cd and am glad they included it but the first cd is a perfect album. Including the extra cuts every song is great.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant enough, but doesn't live up to the hype.......2007-03-05

I bought this after reading the reviews here and was frankly less than blown away. I'd hoped to hear something more than just a live performance of the studio material-- I'd hoped to hear some of the jazz influence that would begin to surface with the material recorded for Caravanserai, but no luck. If you prefer the "latin rock" sounds of the first three Santana albums, you'll no doubt enjoy this. Whether the live versions are really that much better than the studio versions is a matter of personal opinion. If you prefer the sound of the band after the Miles and Coltrane influences started creeping in, then you won't find a whole lot here to excite you. To my ears, "Lotus" is the live Sanatana CD to go for. Despite what its fans who have you believe, this live material is simply not in the same league with the best live rock cd's such as Allmans at Fillmore, Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat, Rock of Ages by the Band, or the Whos' Live at Leeds.

5 out of 5 stars Latin Led Zeppelin.......2007-02-19

Yes, it rocks that hard! I was surprised at how loud and prominent the guitars were- and I have heard a lot of early Santana.

5 out of 5 stars Classic( es muy groovy ese).......2007-01-03

New and improved should be a sticker attached to this disc. The best just got better might work too. I love legacy editions and was thrilled to see another legacy edition of Santana's classic numero tres. The songs are timelessly suspended in rock-nostalgia-heaven. The previously unreleased songs like "No One To Depend On,"" Toussaint L'overture," Taboo" ,""Sabor" and "Para Los Rumberos" from the performance at the Fillmore are classic blues-jam songs that capture the spirit of the times and why Santana caught on and is still around thirty-five years plus down the line. The other previously unreleased tracks are outstanding gems too. The "Black Magic Woman / Gypsy Queen " version from the Fillmore is ,to use an old phrase, outtasight man! The magic in this edition is the remastering of the original disc and the super time capsule performance from the Fillmore. The Joe Zawinul composition, made famous by Miles Davis "In a Silent Way" is a song that retains all the glory of the original song but opens up for a great improvised rendition by Carlitos. It is jazz-rock at it's finest with a Latin-tinge of earthyness. I'm in total agreement with some other reviewers who say that the live disc is worth the price of the disc alone. Don't miss this one this go around, thirty-five years later; music like this doesn't come around very often. This belongs in every classic rock collection.

5 out of 5 stars SANTANA III HOLDS ITS OWN AS A GREAT FOLLOW-UP TO THE SUCCESSFUL ABRAXAS ALBUM........2007-04-19

I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece album entitled "SANTANA III" by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands and one of the most talented and well respected latino hispanic performers ever. I give you one of Mexico's and America's pride and joy's, S-A-N-T-A-N-A. "SANTANA III" was originally released in 1971 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Columbia Records label in association with CBS Inc. This legendary album would be released on Compact Disc in the late 80's. This legendary album would be re-issued and re-released on Compact Disc in 1998 on the new Sony Records Label with the new Original Recording Digitally Remastered technology process. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

At this point in SANTANA'S career, the now legendary guitarist was now considered an established and accomplished guitarist as well as a performer. The band was flying high and enjoying their newfound fame and fortune along with the rewards that the fruits of the good life had to offer. This all was made possible as a result of the extremely successful "ABRAXAS" album and the great tour that followed in promoting the "ABRAXAS" album. Everything was perfect in the SANTANA world and camp and was a perfect time for the band to head back into the recording studio and record the follow-up album to the extremely successful "ABRAXAS" album. Many music critics did not think it was possible for SANTANA to top the successful "ABRAXAS" album. After a certain amount of time flew by, the band would finally come out of the recording studio with the acetate of the finished product and hand the album into Columbia Records. As a result, Columbia Records would release the album as "SANTANA III" in 1971. Many music critics still truly believed that "SANTANA III" was not as good of an album as the "ABRAXAS" album. However, the music critics truly believed that "SANTANA III" exceeded all expectations and was a far better album than expected. In my opinion, "SANTANA III" is a great follow-up album and should serve as another true testament of the sheer greatness and musical creativity of the band's legendary leader and premier guitarist. "SANTANA III" is also a fine fitting tribute to a great performer that is also a true credit to his race as well as the whole human race. With this in mind, SANTANA is truly indeed, far ahead of his time.

It is now time to let the music of SANTANA to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary masterpiece "SANTANA III" album takes right where "ABRAXAS" left off and begins with Latin hard Rocker "Batuka," the legendary slow smooth mystical hard Rocker "No One To Depend On," the slow soothing and relaxing mild Rocker "Taboo," the breathtaking latin jazz Rocker "Toussaint L'Overture," the blistering latin hard Rocker "Everybody's Everything," SANTANA going back to his true roots with the spanish latin song sung in spanish "Guajira," the fantastic groundbreaking latin hard Rocker "Jungle Strut," the incredible slow Rocker "Everything's Coming Our Way" and the spanish singing latin song "Para Los Rumberos." This special edition release contains three bonus live tracks recorded in 1971 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. The three live bonus song tracks contained are the unbelievable live versions of the firey latin Rocker "Batuka," the sizzlin' Rocker "Jungle Strut" and the latin Rocker "Gumbo." May I also add that CARLOS SANTANA'S legendary guitar riffs and licks were definitely in top form when he laid down the tracks for the "SANTANA III" album. His blistering merciless guitar arrangements were sizzlin' red hot and burning hot on fire while recording this album.

Overall, "SANTANA III" is one great album worth seeking further research and information into and checking out especially if you are a hardcore diehard SANTANA fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not familiar with the sound and music of SANTANA, I would buy the SANTANA debut album first, then the "ABRAXAS" and finally this one. If you still love the sounds and music of SANTANA which I know for fact that you will, you might want to research further into and check out all of the SANTANA greatest hits compilation albums. By doing this in the long run, you will benefit by buying the right SANTANA compilation album that is right for you and own the majority of some of SANTANA'S greatest hit songs instead of having to go through all of the trouble in purchasing almost forty SANTANA albums which would cost you an arm and a leg. You can do all of your research on all of the SANTANA albums and purchase as many as you want either through Amazon com or your local Borders Books and Music stores.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing the legendary masterpiece "SANTANA III" album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary masterpiece album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. Buy this album, you'll be glad that you did. This is one great masterpiece album that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, the SANTANA legend and legacy just keeps growing. Following the release of "SANTANA III," the band would soon quickly embark on another World Tour promoting the "SANTANA III" album to highly critically acclaim. SANTANA was riding high experiencing new heights and boundaries which would only improve his music to a greater degree and level unimagined by SANTANA himself and his band. As a member of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, I guess it is safe to say that SANTANA has forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you CARLOS and the rest of your talented band. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE SANTANA! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars Great album, but it ain't Abraxas - still, Carlos is unbeatable.......2007-03-08

Okay, this album rocks, and is my second-favorite of Santana's albums, behind the mighty Abraxas. But some of it kinda sucks, which is why I only give four stars, rather than five.
First the good news: No One to Depend On is a masterpiece. You know, take a bit of metal, a bit of blues, a bit of Latin, even a bit of the whacky psychedelia from the first album. Add the organ groove and Santana's signature guitar soloing away. What could be better, you ask? That bit in the bridge where they switch between English and Spanish. ("I ain't GOT no one - tengo anadie... that I can de-PEND on - tengo anadie..." is that not supremely cool?) This ain't a one-song album, though. I mean, how can a Santana fan NOT love the dramatic near-instrumental Touissant L'Overture? Santana's Santana on that song (it goes without saying he can outplay pretty much everyone), and there's those nonstop riffs he trades with Neil Schon and the polyrhythmic attack... yeah. Of course, Santana hasn't abandoned salsa, so if you liked Oye Como Va, you'll probably love Guajira. That sax solo's a nice touch, too. Jungle Strut is fusion mania, but in a good way. There's also Everybody's Everything, easily the funkiest thing Santana ever did, with a huge horn section - it's fun and catchy indeed, and Schon's wah-wah is killer, but the lyrics arie the usual pseudo-spiritual mumbo-jumbo that made up most of Santana's lyrics at that point. But come on, do you listen to Santana because you want to hear him babble about how the King and Queen of Soul are gonna come around or whatever the hell it is he's going on about this time? No. You listen to him because he's an unbeatable guitarist, plain and simple. Everything's Coming Our Way was a hit too, but I could've done without it - more of those dumb lyrics, and it sounds like Santana's doing The Byrds... nothing wrong with The Byrds, but it sounds out-of-place from Santana. The instrumentals Batuka, Taboo and Para Los Rumberos only confirm this one's status as #2. But the best of this is as good as (if not better than) the Abraxas classics, so you can't go wrong with this.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent.......2007-01-01

I never get tired of this album. The band is as tight as can be and they sound like they are loving every second of it. Santana plays from the bottom of his toes -- every note is earned. After listening to this, if you aren't grinning like an idiot, you must not like music.

5 out of 5 stars It NEVER Gets Old.......2006-07-11

I bought this in 1970, the day I turned 13. I'd heard some Santana because my Spanish teacher would play some earlier (and slightly mellower) Santana in class (in a small town in Indiana). Having never heard anything like it, it took time to grow into, but man, it is a wicked piece of work and one of my absolute favorite albums of all time. Just listen to the rhythm guitar bits and other rhythm section work as you also take in the extraordinary guitar solos ("Taboo," for example). Not to mention the polyrhythms (as in the hand-clapping juxtaposed with the call-and-response guitars in "No One to Depend On"). I consider much of the album a masterpiece -- especially the first three cuts! You HAVE TO listen to this!

5 out of 5 stars The Hottest Santana Album!.......2006-04-26

Originally, I first heard this on a vinyl album, back in the 70's. I was blown away immediately. This is by far not only the finest Santana album ever released, it is also a listening experience that makes you want to hear it again and again. I just got the disc, after not hearing this album for about 30 years. What can I say? It is the ultimate musical experience with a unique combination of Latino, African, rock and jazz sounds, percussion played with amazing energy, combined with Carlos's wailing guitar...My daughter and I chose this album for our number one album for driving music, and believe me, that means it rates way up there on our list! We listen to it almost everyday, the disc will probably wear thin soon!
This album should be a must-buy in any serious rock-jazz-world music lover's collection.

The first 3 books of Gesualdo's madrigals don't have the startling chromaticism and the violent rhythmic contrasts of the 5th and 6th books, but they're rich pieces nonetheless and here and there are hints of the over the top imagination of the later works. These performances are characterized by accurate intonation and lovely timbre. This is one of my favorite recordings of Italian madrigals.

5 out of 5 stars Where it all started........2006-01-31

The Santana fan will easily find a plethora of albums available to choose from. This set, however, is essential for for the Santana fan's music library.

This set contains the digitally remastered first three Santana albums, including what many believe, including myself, Santana's best early album, ABRAXAS.

The accompanying literature also gives a brief insite into the history of the group, explaining their debut at the Fillmore West in 1968, their successful merging of rock & roll, R & B, jazz and latino rhythms, and how the band shaped up and impact each member had on its early sounds.

The group that made ground breaking music that had no name produced two platinum albums and three hit singles in its first three years and you can have it all in one complete set.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute must have, along with first two albums........2003-11-28

"Santana" (unofficially called 'III') completes the Woodstock-era trilogy of Carlos' band. 'I' was the worthy debut, 'Abraxas' was the polished classic, 'III' is something more experimental than either predecessor, more confident, varied and exploratory. You know the classics: "...depend on", and "Guajira", but check out the hypnotic "Taboo" and explosive "Toussaint...". The buoyant "Everybody's Everything" was the highest charting single, and features the distinctive charts from bay-area brethren Tower of Power (the self-titled "Tower of Power(1973)" is a must-have as well).
If you haven't yet ventured into Carlos' discography beyond "Abraxas", bear in mind that all three in this trilogy are essential for any fan of rock/pop music, no matter how casual your collection is. After that, opinions seem to vary...

5 out of 5 stars The Original Santana Band At Its Peak.......2003-05-17

For my money, this is the best Santana album ever. It is his original band at its peak. Toussaint L'Overture ends with Santana's most explosive guitar ever. Taboo is another classic. The album also has the songs No One to Depend On, Everybody's Everything, and Everything is Coming Our Way. But the album also holds together as a whole. Carlos never again had a group as strong as this.

5 out of 5 stars Where it all started........2006-01-22

5 out of 5 stars Judge for yourself!.......2005-11-03

One of the prior reviewers raved about this release, while another essentially disparaged it. Having now heard it for myself, and having previously heard still other, comparable performances/recordings by Hille Perl (not to mention Jordi Savall), I must say that I think that the majority of listeners will be very gratified by this CD. The performances and recording serve to convey an eminently satisfyingly "early baroque" ambiance that I'm savoring right well as I write this. Whether or not these artistic interpretations precisely or fully equal (or eclipse) those of Savall is a moot issue. To use an analogy, even if we were to assume that Heifetz were, for all time, the "best" violinist, would that mean we could never wish to enjoy alternative renderings by Perlman and a host of other interpreters? Of course not! Therefore, purchase--and relish--this CD on its own good merits.

3 out of 5 stars Average French Baroque Performance.......2005-10-28

French Baroque is not a very well known style in performance circles either by the performers themselves or audiences. In particular, viola performances are probably the least known or heard. The viola da gamba is the cello's predecessor and prominent in both English and French Early-Mid Baroque. The instrument has greater range and resonance with 7 strings. There are probably fewer than 300 professional players performing on this instrument today. There are probably 4-5 who are the best and the musicians here are not even close to the talent of the undisputed and unmatched French master violist, Jordi Savall: there is absolutely no comparison.

The pieces here are mostly too slow in their interpretations of the meter and the players are simply not proficient enough to play most of them in terms of technique and knowledge of the French Baroque style. This is certainly one of the more decent interpretations on the market but listen to a sample of Savall's performances such as on the soundtrack to 'All The Mornings of The World' and the music will simply explain itself for you to make your descisions in buying French Baroque. He also has the best performance of Lully's 'Les Concerts Royaux' that I have ever heard: this man is nothing less than a prodigy in his art of the viola and his direction of French Baroque. I have the utmost respect for this man as an artist: he is truly a living legend.

For French Baroque in general and especially for Marin Marais or other viola composers, there is no other performer/conductor than Jordi Savall worth listening to. Especially for viola, his closest contenders are still motionless on the ground while he is flying circles in the stratosphere: there is simply no comparison and his virtuosity is exponentially superior to every one else's. Find out for yourselves and you will soon be agreeing with what I say. Since he/she didn't mention him by name, it seems that the previous reviewer has not heard of Savall and so I wouldn't give too much credence in his/her overgenerous ratings. Good luck in your search for great music!

5 out of 5 stars Sublime yet Sexy.......2004-06-25

The clever marketing alone sold me on this CD. While the composer and instruments are not widely known outside Baroque enthusiasts, the target audience for this recording clearly reaches beyond those with a purely academic interest. This recording is exquisite. The performers are virtuosic, and, judging from the deeply personal liner notes, missionaries for this wonderful material. The virtuosic second movement of the Suite en Re will convince even the most hardened of sceptics that this is engaging material. I make a good deal of my living from classical, medieval and new music, but take a break and rarely play anything past the 14th century (on my home stereo) just for fun. However, I have been enjoying this CD at least twice daily all week and I am buying several more for gifts.

    Album Description

Japanese limited edition pressing has been remastered and comes in a miniature LP sleeve. The last hurrah of the original Santana band, which had stunned the world with its fiery performance at Woodstock two years before, Santana (frequently called Santana III) is an impressive combination of tightly constructed Latin-fueled pop songs including 'No One To Depend On', 'Everybody's Everything', 'Everything's Coming Our Way' and sprawling jams 'Guajira', 'Toussaint L'Overture', 'Jungle Strut'. For his part, Carlos Santana hurls lightning bolts from his guitar throughout but offers opportunities for other band members, such as keyboardist Gregg Rolie and recently added guitarist Neal Schon (both of whom would rise to fame with Journey), a chance to shine as well. CBS. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars If you love music, you won't read this and just get it NOW!.......2002-02-20

What do you get when mesh together blues, jazz, Latin rhythms, and psychadelic improvisation that could have only come out of San Francisco, all centered the raw energy of rock and roll? You get Santana. Now what happens when you take Santana's three greatest albums, have them digitally remastered, and add some awesome live performances to the mix you get a box set that everyone should own, and is perfect for all you low-budget shoppers.

Santana- 5 stars A fiery debut! Santana meshes Latin music and psychadelic rock 'n' roll into something that was completely new and original. They quickly prove that they are an intense, powerful group that demands attention, and are never any less than amazing.

Abraxsas- 5 stars Everything that their debut was, and more! This is an all time classic that belongs in everybody's collection. Tighter musicianship, improved songwriting, and Carlos Santana playing at his peak make this an all time great rock and roll album.

Santana III- 5 stars The weakest album in the set, but still brilliant. Contains a harder and slightly edgier sound than their first two albums, though they are also relaxed and more mature in the studio and as songwriters and musicians. This album was the last album of the woodstock lineup of Santana, and the end of a brief but glorious streak atop the music landscape.

Santana may have matched and exceeded the sales of these three albums (The overblown Supernatural), but they would never match the creative level of their first three albums. All three are essentials of the music business, and everyone should own a copy. If you don't this is the way to get them. With perfect sound, excellent bonus performances, and a low price you simply can't pass this offer up. Get it TODAY!

5 out of 5 stars A great trip back in time.......2001-04-30

I grew up listening to Santana. I couldn't get away from it and never regretted it either. When this box set became available I HAD to buy it! Excellent in sound, the bonus tracks were an extra... BONUS. Well worth the price if you do not have the early albums before Supernatural blew off the charts.

    Get this. 'Nuf said.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Essential Listening.......2001-01-27

So you're one of the millions of people who bought Supernatural and are looking to build your Santana library? Look no further. Santana's first three albums--now remastered with live bonus tracks--are the essential albums to get from a band that's been recording now for more than thirty years. These albums are an exciting blend of rock and Latin rhythms fuelled by Carlos Santanas fluid lead guitar playing. While Santana has had dozens of members pass through its ranks over the years, these three albums featured core members Michael Shrieve (drums), Greg Rolie (keyboards) and Jose Chepito Areas (percussion). All three albums sold over a million copies each and spawned such hits as "Evil Ways," "Black Magic Woman" (their only Top Ten hits before the mega-success of Supernatural), "Oye Como Va," "Everybody's Everything" and "No One To Depend On." [Note: It would be another five years before they cracked the Top 40 again, and then it was with a cover of the Zombies' "She's Not There."] Forget the more (...) Best of Santana, vol. 1 and 2 CDs. This is the one to get. You won't regret it. ESSENTIAL

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Box Set!.......2000-05-09

This box set contains the three best albums of Santana's career. They have had other great albums, but Santana, Abraxas and Santana III are there three best of all time. These three albums are essential to any rock collection. My personal favorite of the three is The third album. However, all three albums would be five stars, and when combined, they are still five stars. These three albums contain some of Santana's all time best songs, including Soul Sacrifice, Evil Ways, Jingo, Black Magic Woman, Oye Coma Va, No One To Depend On, and Everybody's Everything. These songs alone make these albums worth owning. Plus, these albums come with three different live songs on each CD, including Woodstock, where the great version of Fried Neckbones is. These CDs are essential to Santana fans, and all rock fans.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2000-03-15

Talk about a Winner! This set of Santana's BEST albums is AWESOME! This is the one you've been looking for!
