Eric Burdon is One of Rock's Finest Vocalist, Blessed with a Powerful Voice Drenched in the Blues. He Came to Fame with the Original Animals in the Early 60s and is Featured Here with a Latter Version of the Band, featuring Vic Briggs on a 1968 Album Produced by Tom Wilson. Heavily Influenced by the California Hippie Movement , the New Animals Perform Such Evocative Hit Numbers as "Monterey" and "Sky Pilot". vastly underrated and overlooked. psychedelia at its finest!!

3 out of 5 stars The Weakest But Still Great.......2005-06-08

Being an Eric Burdon freak, I certainly do like this CD. The best part is it contains one of the all time greatest singles Sky Pilot in the best mix and mastering I've heard so far. However, there a few things one wishes had been done differently. 2 songs feature one of the other band memebers on vocals. Eric would have been better, but that's history and the tunes are still quite enjoyable. Seems to me to be an answer to Axis:Bold where Noel sings a couple. The tunes No Self Pity and We Are One are not exactly catchy tunes, but I would image would have been great on a psychedelic light drenched stage. The mono single of Sky Point is great. That tune is a totally differnt experience in mono. I think Eric is one of the few artists who I would call a mystical visionary.

5 out of 5 stars The best work of Eric Burdon & the Animals.......2004-05-20

Until you've heard it, you will never know. This was Eric Burdon's answer to the Beatles Sgt Peppers LHCB. This is a master work that will never be repeated in any form or function, contained herein, the greatest compilation of music from the 60's I've ever heard. "In the beginning... Well, you should know by now." We love you, Eric.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet memories of youth, somewhat disturbed.......2002-01-26

At last mine again, after almost 3 years of search (this Burdon masterpiece has already been part of my vinyl collection in the 70's), it brought back all the sweet memories of the late sixties - only disturbed by some strange re-naming of tracks (psychedelic "Orange and Red Beams" replaced by the somewhat more material "Oranges and Red Beans") and the lack of the original date of issue. No traces of remastering have been left on the CD - though this would have been a clear advantage.

3 out of 5 stars A Staircase Leading to Nowhere Land.......2001-12-15

This is the most accomplished and well-produced of the albums by Eric Burdon and the (New) Animals, but its appeal depends on whether or not you can tolerate a LOT of flower power. The boys lay it on thick here, making much of THE TWAIN SHALL MEET a bombastic and cloying listen. At its best, TWAIN is an unhinged period piece crammed with ornate, kitchen-sink musicianship. The New Animals are at their peak as a unit here, but they're constantly undermined by Burdon's obsession with hippie cliches. Indeed, Eric's overzealousness isn't a million miles from William Shatner's interpretations of Beatle and Dylan lyrics. If you're a fan, you'll dig knowing the Top 20 hits "Monterey" (love them two-bar imitations of the acts!) and "Sky Pilot" (with Burdon in dynamite voice) are here, even if both are symptomatic of the great singer's tackiness as a lyricist. Yet both seem subtle and restrained compared to the crude cosmic consciousness of "No Self Pity" and "All Is One," on which Eric sounds like a psychedelic Tony Orlando. "Closer to the Truth", the album's one blues track, starts off fine, but quickly sinks into a meandering groove that's crying out for a galvanizing guitar solo. Bassist Danny McCulloch's ethereal "Orange and Red Beams" (hilariously mistitled "Oranges and Red Beans") was allegedly a favorite song of Jimi Hendrix's, which is the only recommendation I can think to give it. Burdon's powerful singing (especially on "Sky Pilot"), the band's instrumental versatility, Tom Wilson's expansive, trippy production, and Vic Briggs' skillful arrangements are the saving graces of this record, which is a ball in a "peace, brother" kind of way. To put it in its proper perspective, TWAIN is far more assured than the inflated indulgences of WINDS OF CHANGE or LOVE IS, but it's still an album only aging hippies (or Burdon fanatics) will listen to more than once, unless your bag is camp.

4 out of 5 stars Volume 2 of their prog-blues trilogy..........2000-04-26

preceded by the kickoff album "Winds Of Change". As with that release, it's best to listen beyond the hit single. In this case, there are two: "Monterey" and the full version of "Sky Pilot". Once you do that, there's "Just the Thought", a meditative number characterized by a Gregorian-style repetition (cathedral reverb and all) of each phrase Burdon sings by the backup singers. The song "No Self Pity" is almost Confucian in its philosophical nature; the choruses ending each verse consist of comparisons like "no matter how strong you are, there is always somebody stronger. And no matter how..." etc., four of them per chorus, no repeats. "We Love You Lil" is a "Hey Jude" style instrumental jam built on the WW II classic "Lili Marlene". As I mention in my "Winds Of Change" review, the blues is by its very nature introspective, but this underrated cycle of albums takes that a step beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Best example of Eric's talents.......1999-07-05

This has always rated as one of my all time faves. Each time I listen to this I gain a new respect for the talent of this man and his band. The lyrics of "No Self Pity" are some of the most powerful he ever sang, relevant to this day.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD Eric Burdon & The Animals ever produced........1999-01-16

With "Monterey", "Closer To The Truth" and "Sky Pilot" on this CD, it would have to be good and it is. The surprise is that the rest of the CD is no disappointment, each track refreshingly different from the last. No mamby pamby, girlie mush here, just a musical comment that captures and preserves a slice of history.

4 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Eric reinvents himself California style.......2003-04-26

Leaving the UK for the California coast, he picks up a new band and also reinvents himself as a sorta peace & love cosmic older brother, instead of a boasting, boozing blues singer. From '67 and '68. Eric had become psychedelised and the evidence oozes out of every pore of these two albums presented here as a double disc set with the original liners to Winds of Change, and additional ones by Alan Clayson. There are hits (San Francisan Nights, Monterey, and Sky Pilot) there are a few clinkers, and a lot of Eric Burdon's most interesting work. All originals except for a trippy reworking of the Stones' Paint It Black. In addition to the hits, some of Eric Burdon's most interesting work resides on these sides: Poem by the Sea, Hotel Hell, Good Times, Anything, Orange and Red Beams, We Love You Lil, and All is One are among the best songs Burdon ever had a hand in writing. The shout/spoken Man-Woman predates his later 70's work with War, the spoken work story The Black Plague is still chilling in an A.E. Poe meets EC Comics sorta way. San Franciscan Nights captures a moment or at least a bit of the mythology of a magical moment in a corny/sweet 3:24. Hotel Hell has lonely Spanish trumpet casting long shadows across acoustic guitar and Eric's darkest sleepless 3:AM musings. Good Times looks back on hard drinking days with hard won wisdom, and potent hooks that recall his earlier work more than anything else here. The all embracing love song Anything is perhaps Eric's most blissed out recorded moment. The first disc/album is the better, but they are both well worth investigating by anyone curious about the more experimental pop musical moments of the later 60s, by one of it's underappreciated and more gifted practitioners.

4 out of 5 stars Summer of Love in 2003.......2003-04-22

Back in 1966, at the age of 11, when the Beatles were the rage, I fell in love with the Animals strong raunchy blues. No velvet coats for these guys. Eric Burden has always been a re-inventor and creative force. HE has the gift of of being able to powerfully deliver spoken words as well as singing. Winds of Change and the Twain are some of later albums, along with Love Is. I have all of these in the original vinyl and traveled to England in 1972 to buy them, as they were hard to find then. Now I have them again in a more useable format.
The two subject albums are creative, The Twain is pshycedelic in feel and celebrates Monterey Pop festival, really different and not blues. The weaker of the two IMHO, excluding its only 'hit' Sky Pilot, again relevant in light of Iraq.

Winds of Change, offers spoken stories about hispanic lovers parting and reuniting as well as medieval plague with very cool background music, a cover of Paint it Black, and some other driving tunes. It stands up well thirty years later. These are not the top forty covers or compositions. They are original and different, and interesting, especially for the time. Some songs have born the test of time better than others-see the editorial review-they are notably those played on the radio. My CD came as two CDs one for each album, liner notes which arent that accurate IMHO, and little of the original art. Still I like the albums.
