Who's Greatest Hits [Import]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
From their beginnings as the patron saints of Britain's mod, mod, mod, mod world, to their sophisticated compositions and musical virtuosity, The Who remain one of the greatest rock bands. Ever. With so many songs that helped redefine the very genre that they were a part of, it's annoying that Who's Greatest Hits only dabbles in The Who's catalog, ignoring for instance, the beautiful tension of hits like "I Can See for Miles" or the exhilarating rush of genius at the beginning of "Baba O'Riley." The collection does provide a decent array of the band's growth from "Substitute" and their signature "My Generation," through "Pinball Wizard," "Won't Get Fooled Again," and, eventually, "Love Reign O'er Me." As a brief overview, Who's Greatest Hits is initially satisfying, but like The Who themselves, it leaves the listener wishing for more. --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars A++++.......2007-05-30

These Eyes was the worst single the Guess Who ever released. A far better but unknown choice would have been I Found Her In A Star, also from Wheatfield Soul. Along with Laughing, these two early releases cemented the GW in the minds of most rockers as a band not to be taken seriously. What all those Uriah Heep and Deep Purple fans missed out on is chronicled through-out the remainder of this fine release, which undoubtedly has the best sound quality of any GW digital issue. This is otherwise a wonderful primer for the uninitiated on the eclectic jazz/pop/rock brilliance that was The Guess Who. If you think you had the Guess Who 'pegged' as a middling Top 40 band from the Woodstock era, you have not yet earned your degree in Classic Rockolgy. This disc is a fine place to start, but you could be left wanting more--

5 out of 5 stars Early 70s Rock Done Right The Second Time Around.......2007-03-16

This is one of my favorite all-time groups precisely because of their range of music and this collection from RCA is just crammed with the best that these guys ever did. Not a dud in the bunch. This band did indeed compose and play some great stuff in their day and RCA's meticulous care in restoring these hits into digital format shows in the culmination of this CD. Yeah, the Guess Who did it right the first time and RCA just improved on it some more. Rock on.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD OLE ROCK N ROLL~.......2007-01-05

A great CD to have in your rock n roll collection. I can jam and sing along at the top of my lungs in the car....now THAT'S the sign to me of a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guess Who Collection.......2006-11-05

This is definately the best one-disc compilation of the Guess Who, it's got all of their hits and no filler. I feel that the Guess Who was and is underrated, as one of the more talented classic rock groups. I don't think they were ever fully recognized as part of the rock development and really weren't credited as they should have been. I think they belong up there with The Rolling Stones, The Who, etc. All of the songs on this disc are excellent and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Guess Who Is Awesome.......2006-10-02

WOW a great collection of some great music by The Guess Who. It starts out with the same first eleven songs from THE BEST OF THE GUESS WHO. But it is an 18 song album and every one on here is a spectacular collection. My personal favorite is a tie beetween "American Woman" and "These Eyes". Lenny Kravitz could never get close to what these guys could do. He just doesn't put his soul into it just like the rest of the modern music world. But anyway this is a great collection of great music and is definetly worth every penny.

A curious coda from a truly peculiar bunch. Who Cares a Lot is the swan song of the most engaging band to come to the fore when the late-'80s and early-'90s funk-punk hordes defiled the land. What set the San Francisco-based quintet apart all the lukewarm Chili Peppers of the time was powerful musicianship (few hard-rock bands could match them onstage in their Real Thing prime) and a contrary disposition. When the sweeping "Epic" briefly transformed FNM into MTV darlings, they responded by recording their most challenging work, the jarringly unpredictable Angel Dust, a commercial lapse from which they never quite recovered. Then there was their unsettling taste for easy-listening sounds, rather too generously evidenced on this best-of package by Lionel Richie's "Easy," Bacharach and David's "This Guy's in Love with You," the Bee Gees' "I Started a Joke," and "Theme from Midnight Cowboy." Their adrenaline-drunk fans never knew whether to cry or laugh. Of course, their trademark extreme alt-rap-metal forays are also in evidence, from 1987's "We Care a Lot" (a puncturing parody of altruistic star sing-alongs) to the half dozen turn-out-the-lights tracks from 1998. Ultimately, no one ever found solace in Faith No More, but, as Who Cares a Lot affirms, they were often beyond belief. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Have FAith.......2007-07-02

This is a 2-disc collection of FNM tunes. Definitely can be divided into parts. The great tunes are on the first half of the first disc: We Care a Lot, Epic, Falling to Pieces, and Midlife Crisis. The second half has some good stuff: Digging the Grave and Gentle Art of Making Enemies are like thrash metal, with the later tune also reminiscent of Limp Bizkit at times. Evidence is almost an easy listening tune. The second disc is much shorter than the first, less than half an hour, and is pretty forgettable. So 4 stars, largely on the strength of disc one.

WHY WASNT "THE WORLD IS YOURS" ON ANGEL DUST???
ANYWAY BUY THIS IF YOU HAVE A BRAIN!!

5 out of 5 stars You can go wrong with OZZY, but can't miss with FAITH NO MORE.......2006-11-13

Look at all these big namers who can't handle success and they just fall apart after a brief spark or a couple of great records. Heck, Ozzy wrecked his best albums by re-recording the bass and drums just because he (or Sharon?)had a hissy with the underpaid, underappreciated band members. With Faith No More, you have steady growth, from one great record to another leap of gut-punch rock as good as and BETTER than 75% of the bands out during AND after their time. Why waste your money on anything lesser--these your boys!

4 out of 5 stars i have faith now.......2005-11-28

now this is what you call metal not them poser bands slipknot mudvayne etc this is the real deal, the band that fascinated me with there bassey catchy single "epic" and "from out of nowhere" these guys couldn't be put in a box because after the media tried they would bring out a hilarious single "i started a joke" which got the boffins scratching their heads and thinking hmm what are they
well they're are really really great metal band
who are missed in a world of mediocre music
I had faith in faith no more

3 out of 5 stars A Solid Overview of the Keith Moon Period.......2006-04-19

When it comes to classic rock, who does it better than The Who? Since 1965 they have made some of the finest music out there. This overview isn't your best bet if you want a COMPLETE review of The Who's career, but it's pretty good if you want a slightly different compilation of their music (all featuring Keith Moon on drums).

Positives:
Several "best of" standards, including Who Are You, Won't Get Fooled Again, Squeeze Box, Love Reign O'er Me and many others are here.
-UNDERRATED GEMS ARE HERE TOO! The Relay, The Seeker, and My Wife.
-SOUND QUALITY IS EXCELLENT!

Negatives:
Where is Baba O'Riley, The Kids Are Alright, Join Together, I'm Free, Slip Kid, I Can See For Miles and Behind Blue Eyes? This purports to be a comprehensive collection of The Who's highlights; they at least should have tried to cover the bases and fill up the disc - ONLY 13 SONGS on this collection!!!???? Think of how much more material could be on here.
-NOTHING FROM LIVE AT LEEDS! Summertime Blues isn't here, which really stinks. That's a great song.

If you want a quick and dirty summary of Keith Moon-era songs with a few twists, then this is a nice compilation and probably worth the investment. But, if you want a more comprehensive single disc overview, buy "Who's Better Who's Best" and/or "Then And Now!: 1964-2004." The latter of these compilations features the band's first new studio recordings in 22 years.

2 out of 5 stars Yep, another incomplete Who comp.......2006-04-05

It's offical: there are too many Who compilations on the market. Some work (Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, The Ultimate Collection), some don't (the Millennium Collection, My Generation). This one simply doesn't. Why? Read on...
1. Some of the bare essentials (Baba O'Riley, You Better You Bet, Behind Blue Eyes, Boris the Spider, I Can't Explain, The Real Me, Call Me Lightning, Long Live Rock, I Can See For Miles) are missing.
2. Also missing are the smorgasboard of great album tracks the Who put out. I'm thinking Go to the Mirror Boy, 1921, the Acid Queen, The Song Is Over, Gettin' In Tune, Going Mobile, Doctor Jimmy and the Punk and the Godfather and Slip Kid.
3. The record companies insist on putting Who Are You on every who collection including this one. Which is great, except for the song isn't much.
4. They try to cover the Who's twenty years of making studio albums in thirteen tracks. Genius, Watson!
Though it's hard to make a Who collection without any good moments, The Ultimate Collection is the way to go if you want to experience Whostory 101.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty crazy.......2005-11-15

A couple of good songs but the Beatles are far better I mean much better vocals harmony Guitars everything. Also the who were just plane out out of there mind. GodBless

3 out of 5 stars Good but not Complete.......2005-04-08

Don't get me wrong I love The Who. The fact is they have so many great songs that it's not possible for ANY of their greatest hits albums to have every song you would have wanted. This album is just a cheap shot. Only 13 songs? No linar notes? No bonus bonus material of any kind? They could have done a better job than this. On the other hand, this is much better than the who millenium collection. I recomend this to anyone just getting into the who and wanting an introduction. One good thing about this album is that it will leave you wanting more...and trust me their is much much more to the who. For serious fans I recomend the two disc ultimate who collection.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Special.......2004-10-01

I don't buy greatest hits albums. If I like the artist I will get all of their CDs instead of a greatest hits (unless I'm a huge fan of that artist and I want to get the greatest hits album for an extra song or something). I got the Nirvana greatest hits CD as a gift and I found this one lying around in a droor somewhere. Usually in a greatest hits CD I look for something special, a bonus DVD, a cool stroy in the booklet etc... This had nothing but the songs.

While The Who isn't my favourite band, I do like them. I wouldn't have bought this and well, I didn't like Isaid earlier I found it lying around in my house (I guess it was my ddad's). Other than a great lie-up of songs this collection featured no special stuff. If you open the booklet there is a track list and another flag-thing. The Nirvana greatest hits had a cool inspiring story in the booklet. So while I enjoy listeneing to the songs, its really nothing specail and I'll probably just end up buying the rest of "The Who" anywho!

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars seventeen non hit's.......2007-07-12

overall a great compilation of classic tsol song's but buyer beware there are only 17 song's on this album not 18 as said on the cover.

still a great buy. oh and track 8 is perfect when you get stuck in traffic, that alone make's owning this album worth it!

4 out of 5 stars not bad but not as good as the actual albums.......2005-05-05

im not sure what they did, but i hear this is a live in studio cd. its basically tsol re-recorded a collection of 18 classic songs. honestly id recommend the studio albums over this but since this will be easier to find and still not too shabby at that, it would be a great buy. yeah but i think they butcher a few classics on this cd...like "80 times" is far inferior to the dance with me version.
