Two stars only.......2007-05-16
One star for Lennon - McCartney cover, second one for Jimmy Page guitar. Unfortunatelly, didn't have a chance to listen to original version (this one is remastered version).
One of Joe Cocker's best.......2007-03-09
When I fist listen to the old vynil LP it seems fantastic to me, now it sounds the same. It's impossibe not to own this CD.
His Best.......2004-11-13
This is Joe's first album and it is his best IMHO. His following release, Joe Cocker, is also highly praised but I think falls a distant second to this one. Alot of soul and great musicians to back him up, including Jimmy Page. This one is great.
Joe Cocker's Terrific Debut.......2004-08-15
WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS is an exceptional debut from Joe Cocker. It contains a wonderful mix of covers and a few originals, and the title cut rips the Beatles' original to shreds any day. Also not to be missed is Cocker's rendition of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", sung to sound like it's coming from an at-heart pacifist who occasionally loses his cool on other people. Pointing out other highlights is pointless, as this album should be taken as a whole.
1969's Rock N Roll Rookie Of The Year!.......2004-02-25
Joe Cocker's 1969 debut album "With a Little Help From My Friends", is without question, one of the greatest debut albums of the classic rock era. This release packs a punch from the very start. Beside the title track, which is one of the most recognized rock songs ever recorded, Joe is simply stunning, on tracks like "Feeling Alright", which also was a huge hit and his version of "Bye Bye Blackbird". His take on Dylan's "I Shall Be Released", and "Just Like A Woman" are some of the most gut wrenching, and emotional versions of these songs ever waxed. At the time of it's release 35 years ago, rock and soul had never been blended, with such power and grace. Jimmy Page and Stevie Winwood along with B.J Wilson and long time Cocker keyboard man Chris Stainton, were all part of the supporting cast, that helped this album become a huge hit, that propelled Joe Cocker to rock stardom, that continues to this day, some 35 years later.

Could have been better.......2006-08-22
Not the best treatment of Beatles music from the classical point of view. London Symphony was much better.
awesome music.......2006-03-10
Hearing the Beatles music arranged in classical format shows what great musicians and composers Lennon and McCartney were.
AMAZING!.......2005-01-08
I cannot help but smile when I listen to the beautiful arrangements on this album. It blends the Beatles' genius for melody with the great percussive sound and incredible energy of Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. I've heard other orchestral versions of Beatles songs, but none has compared to this one (if anyone has found a better CD, please post a note here). Any Beatles or Pops fan should definitely own this CD. I can't stop listening!
Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops do the Beatles.......2005-01-01
As conductor of the Boston Pops for almost half a century, Arthur Fiedler brought popular classical music and pop music with a classical twist to the people. Leonard Bernstein was providing an intellectual and more glamorous musical education for Americans, but Fielder was coming into our living rooms on a weekly basis with his Boston Pops concerts. Fielder and the Boston Pops produced a lot of records, mostly with RCA in the 1950s through the 1970s, most of which offered everything from classical overtures and ballet pieces to movies themes and the hits of the Beatles.
It was inevitable that with over a hundred albums the Boston Pops would do the Fab Four. They were the first orchestra to perform the songs of the Beatles in 1964 when Fiedler returned from a trip to Liverpool ("I Want to Hold Your Hand" was the first one they ever did). These are not just these songs played by a classical orchestra but rather arrangements done for this purpose. You will notice that one of the standard ways of arranging these songs is to use the chorus as the introduction for the song (e.g., "Eleanor Rigby," "Hey Jude"). If you can guess from the drumming at the beginning of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" or "Yellow Submarine" what those songs are then you are way ahead of me, but that is the sense of fun that Fiedler brought to these songs by giving them the John Phillip Sousa treatment.
Sometimes it is such the simple elegance of doing the guitar parts with strings, as with "And I Love Her," or even the staccato strings of "Penny Lane," that makes the songs enjoyable. Then there are the mood chances invoked by turning "A Little Help From My Friends" into a work of minor chords. My assumption is that if you pick up this album you will know the songs, but not these arrangements, so you should just forget about looking at the play list and just listen to the music.
There are a quartet of bonus tracks on the album, featuring live versions of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "And I Love Her," and "A Hard Day's Night." These are not different versions of these songs, which is too bad because I thought it would be interesting to see if the Pops arrangers could come up with different classical ways of doing the same songs. The final track is actually Fiedler talking about how the Pops came to play the Beatles music, as a "novelty." I have not listened to this sort of music for a while, but it makes for nice background music and there are more albums out there. Remember "Saturday Night Fiedler"?
Some Moments - but doesn't live up to expectations.......2004-09-30
During the 20th century, Arthur Fiedler was one of the most celebrated conductors of orchestral music. He is most famous for being the longtime conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. As someone who is a novice to classical music, I have found Arthur Fiedler's music very easy to get into. Namely, Fiedler made classical music easy - for the everyday fan to enjoy. One way Fiedler accomplished this is through doing popular tunes in the classical style. Fiedler's style often added a new gusto to classical music concerts by including not only popular music, but also Broadway tunes, jazz, folk, and advertising jingles - all done in the classical style (in the late 70s, he even did Saturday Night Fever tunes - 'Saturday Night Fiedler'). One might get very excited to hear that there is a collection in which Fiedler does Beatles tunes. I've always thought the Beatles' music would lend itself perfectly in the classical music arena - especially their later works. On this particular collection "Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra play The Beatles", it does have it moments where things work very well. However, overall this collection did fall short on my high expectations that I had.
There are several things that disappoint me about this collection. For starters, there is only a total of two songs from the Beatles best three albums: "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" has one song ("With a Little Help From My Friends"), The "White Album" has one song ("Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da"), while there is no songs from "Abbey Road". As mentioned above, I thought the Beatles' later material lent itself well to being played with an orchestra. These albums are really the cornerstone of this period, yet there is two songs between these three albums. I understand that Fiedler's "Play the Beatles" was put together in 1969, but I still expected much more of a presence from these albums. I think many of the tunes on these albums could have lent itself very easily to classical music. For example, songs such as "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", "When I'm Sixty-Four", "Day in the Life", "Come Together", "Golden Slumbers", "Carry That Weight", "Birthday", and "Helter Skelter" would have sounded wonderful being played under the classics. I don't know if the Fiedler and the Boston Pops ever did these songs, but if they did - they should have been included. If they were done, it would be nice to hear them on an updated version of this collection. Some of these tunes are available on other classics collection, but Fiedler's Orchestra was the best at playing this music, so I would have liked to have heard it here.
The other thing that disappoints me are some of the selections themselves. Most of the tunes do keep to the sound you would expect from the Beatles, but some do not sound as good as I would expect. "With a Little Help From My Friends" just doesn't sound much like the original tune. The song that I consider the signature song by the Beatles - "Hey Jude" is an extreme disappointment - it just doesn't capture the magic of the original song. Songs like "Michelle" and "And I Love Her" do keep to the Beatles sound, but they somehow miss the mark. Perhaps these two songs aren't the best songs to be done with a Classical Orchestra.
However, this collection is not all bad. There are some positive points that do shine. There are several songs which surprise me on how well they sounded being played in the classical sense. "Eleanor Rigby" is one of those. You can feel a lot of power and emotion with that song. Another song that surprises me how well it sounds being played as a classical piece is "Penny Lane". Fiedler is also able to demonstrate a lot of power by playing by playing "Penny Lane' as a classical piece. In "Yellow Submarine", Fiedler puts a military and marching band spin on the song. It gives the song a whole new dimension. As for my favorite piece on the collection - it has to be "Fool on the Hill". Somehow I almost like "Fool on the Hill" played as a classical piece better than how the Beatles do it. Other songs that sound good are a couple of the Beatles' earlier tunes - "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "A Hard Day's Night"
It is worth noting that there are some live versions of these songs included with Fiedler's studio recordings. In particular there are live versions of "And I Love Her" and "A Hard Day's Night". There are also multiple versions of the same song included. You will hear three different recordings of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (one from 1964 and two from 1969 - you will hear a change in tempo). There are also two versions of "A Hard Day's Night" (the live 1965 version and a 1969 studio recording). Counting the live and studio versions - there are also two versions of "And I Love Her".
It is also worth noting that on the final song (the third version of "I Want To Hold Your Hand"), there is a spoken introduction by Arthur Fiedler which is about 1 minute long in which Fiedler explains why he started playing Beatles music. The liner notes contain a one panel writeup by Peter Dellheim that discuss a little more background about the success Fiedler has had playing the Beatles.
Overall, this isn't a bad collection. I had higher expectations knowing how good a conductor Arthur Fiedler is as well as knowing how good many of the Beatles' songs would have sounded. This might appeal to the Beatles fan wanting to hear songs Classical, and possibly even vice versa - but if you want to go deeper with the Beatles being played classical, you may have to go elsewhere.

Great album for fans of music.......2005-08-10
Are you kidding? Where has this album been all my life? And I thought the song first/musician second idea only existed in prog rock. I guess you could use that statement as a barometer for understanding the vast appeal of this album. I have heard a lot of music, granted it is mostly progressive rock and thrash metal, but those are two pretty wide universes, and with limited exposure to truly different types of music, I must say this is simply one of the best albums I have ever heard. I am no stranger to sit-down-and-listen, and this album deserves full attention. Layer upon layer of intensely fun music at your fingertips. And the grooves...those precious, precious grooves. I thought all bass playing was white and angular. Great to hear fantastic, team-oriented bass playing that catches you in a groove yet doesn't obnoxiously take center stage in a pretentious showcase. I know this album has been around for some time, but it's new to me. Hearing soulful playing like this is almost like hearing Chapman stick-based music for the first time: fresh and rejuvenating. So for all you progressive rock and thrash metal fans out there looking for something just as intense but in a different vein, try this one out.
A truly great album Steve with great arrangements.......2002-04-12
One thing overlooked many reviews of Steve Cropper's work is the fact that the whole sound was what interests Steve, he is an arranger first, and on this album it shows. Although the album lacks credits, the 1971 original release date would indicate that the late, and great, Al Jackson, Jr was on drums and if you like to hear a super rock drummer work out with a great guitarist, this is an album for you. As always, Steve Cropper is strong, but doesn't wear you down. This is album about good songs, not a show-off piece. Cropper is a fan, and enjoys hearing good side men as much as we do. There are some fine horns on here, and if you like "Hang 'em high" or "Time is tight", you will certainly enjoy this timeless album. One song I was sorry was not included here is "Slim Jenkin's Place", a Jones-Cropper-Dunn-Jackson classic that is currently only available on the STAX 3-CD set "Booker T. & the MGs" that comprises (I think) all the sides that were ever released as singles and some amazing live stuff, including 5 and 10 minute sets of "Time is tight" and "Hang 'Em High". If you get either, you will be glad and have music you can listen to over and over. If you only know Boooker T and Steve Cropper from their covers of the Beatles and others, you are missing some fine music and you should fix that. (Don't let the release date fool you, there is no expiration date on this album).
Little known Cropper album worth a listen.......2002-02-22
This album holds many enjoyable moments for anyone who will
take the time to really listen to it. The arrangements are great. I only regret that none of the musicians are given
credit. What Steve does with a simple tune like Land of a Thousand Dances is incredible. I wish he had done more solo
albums during this period.
Steve Cropper - He rocks.......2000-05-11
He might of had a beard an that, an been in that rubbish film The 'Blues' Brothers, but he was well good. This album isn't the best thing what he done, but it's worth getting. I got it for my birthday recently, and have been dancing with my elbows sticking out and my thumbs tucked in the belt loops of my jeans since then.
Go and buy it - it's only cheap.

Selectively Worthwhile.......2006-01-22
This chestnut from Butch Baldassari's Nashville Mandolin Ensemble is a mixed bag. Parts of it are very much worth a listen. I particularly like their rendition of the Allman Brothers classic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and while their take on Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" isn't transcendent, it's pretty sharp. It's especially noteworthy how much sound the ensemble is able to get out of only six instruments with a fairly narrow range of sound.
But not all of it bears up to repeated listening. The "Bluegrass" section of the album is worthwhile, but the "Bach>>Beatles" part is awkward. The renditions of "Sleepers Awake" and "With a Little Help From My Friends" sound really thin, and the "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring," one of the more enduringly moving pieces from Bach's body of work, comes across as kind of sleepy. The sound the ensemble gets out of their instruments is big, but not varied, and especially on the three classical pieces that kick of the album, the effect is an unearned sense of being almost tepid.
Because it's fairly inexpensive, this album is probably worth getting for the second half of the playlist, which is very much listenable. But if you're going to play the album more than once you need to be selective in your listening. Worthwhile but spotty, this album is a valiant addition to the canon of mandolin music, but not something that will rest permanently in your CD changer.
Monstrously good!.......2005-05-25
Playing Time - 50:51 -- With over a decade under their belts, The Nashville Mandolin Ensemble has now trimmed down to a tight-knit and lean sextet for their fourth album, a presentation of 15 numbers recorded live at Vanderbilt University. The group features mando-family instruments (mandolins, mandola, mandocello) supplemented with 5-string viola, guitar and bass. The artists include Butch Baldassari, Stephan Dudash, Walter Carter, John Hedgecoth, Van Manakas, and David Spicher. In keeping with the program and album's title ("Bach, Beatles, Bluegrass"), the album opens with three neat classical Bach compositions, followed by three meaty selections from John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
The "bluegrass" is much more than just that with tunes from the genres of jazz, Gypsy, swing, Dawg, new acoustic and old-time music. Contempoary compositions from mandolinist Charlie Provenza and guitarist Roger Hudson are first-rate-and-a-half. It's amazing to hear what these hot pickers do with a number like "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," written by Dickey Betts, who was lead guitarist with the Allman Brothers in the sixties and seventies. Then, they can also evoke images of a moonlit evening at a café in Paris with their simply dee-lish appeteaser, "Nuages" from Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. It's a joy to hear musicians of this caliber take on a wide range of material from "Stardust" to "Happy Birthday, Bill Monroe." Ensemble member Butch Baldassari contributes a bouncy original "Jack Rabbit Trail," which provides some icing for this mandocake. Not losing sight of their roots, two traditional numbers close out the album. Walter Carter, mandola player, is deserving of special recognition for his quality and classy arranging of seven of the songs. For a live recording, the sound quality is excellent and fortunately no annoying audience applause is included. This album is monstrously good, and it is further proof that Nashville currently sports one of the finest mandolin ensembles in the world. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Not the fusion Larry, if you were wondering.......2005-07-20
On this cd, Larry plays some great jazz bebop guitar with a clean tone(L-5 or 175 Gibson guitar I think). Anyone looking for the great rock fusion Steely Dan or early solo stuff (1978) will probably not dig this. However, if you like jazz (as I do), this is really great playing!! Sounds very much in the style of Joe Pass and Howard Roberts, very swinging, with great single line playing. The best Larry on record is S/T 1978 and Strikes Twice. His solo on "Mulberry Street" on guitar synth (and speeded up) is one of the greatest jazz bebop solos I've heard! But this album is certainly worth a shot if you want to hear great jazz single string soloing.

with a little help from my friends?.......2007-05-05
Wow! I love this cd. It's got a great (some of my favorites)selection of songs..awesome vocals..nice liner notes with some fantastic pictures..great mix with some new twists on some really wonderful songs.I love the sax from E.Winter..the new mix on "Something to fall back on" is excellent..I really enjoy the remix of "Mated",one of my all time favs. T.Levin adds some really cool bass to "Bang on the drum"..Great guitar from S.Lukather on "Tiny Deamons".All the players do a bang up job and none of them mess up any of these classic Todd songs. They only give them new life.I still love the way they were done originally, but excitedly recieve these new versions. Now weither or not these guys are friends of Todd I dont know...Maybe Edgar Winter is?
garbage.......2005-07-06
as i said on the tr rocks interview, here it is again. someone made a very bad or desperate deal where these budget combo things keep popping up again and again, different country, different name, same basement 80s metal treatment of his stuff..its sad to see such reverb laden riffage ruin such great tunes....this is not a todd rundgren album, its a mistake that he agreed to that keeps coming back to rip someone new off who doesnt know better..stay far far away from any of these projects
Not much difference indeed.......2004-07-13
This seems to be where Todd gave his vocal tracks to various other artists who then supplied the instrumentation. So the vocals are exactly the same, and the music, in most cases, has little added imagination. It's sounds a bit better on the second listen, but it's not really worth owning if you already have most of his other albums. I would have liked more of a remix album (along the lines of Patrick O'Hearn's Mixup, for example). It was especially sad on the song from "A Capella", which was done with all voice and no instruments. What's the point of then going back and adding piano or guitar?
Not too different from the originals.......2003-08-16
Not a bad album, worth having in your "Todd" section at home. One that still cracks me up is "Emperor of the Highway", originally found on the "Ever Popular Tortured Artist Affect" album.

That at the ripe young age of 40 pianist Renee Rosnes has her first compilation album comes as no surprise. Rosnes is a sophisticated, bop-centered interpreter of jazz standards and a refreshing stylist, a budding composer with a signature piano style. Featuring the numerous jazz stars she has recorded with since her 1988 eponymous Blue Note debut, With a Little Help gathers together older tracks with unreleased live and alternate tracks for a serious roundup of Rosnes. She creates lovely counterpoint with Joe Henderson on a bouncy, wide-open reading of "Summer Night," followed by "I've Got You Under My Skin." On Alec Wilder's serene "The Sounds Around the House," Rosnes plays a beautiful solo which is simple yet fully realized and performed. Joined by Chris Potter, she lays down mean Latin chops on "Upa Neguinho," which recalls a '50s cutting session. Dianne Reeves joins Renee for a twinkling "Lazy Afternoon," while Monk's "Bright Mississippi," with Branford Marsalis's bountiful blowing, is a hard-bop showcase for Rosnes's probing fingers and subtle piano commentary. Wayne Shorter's "Diana" and the original "Malaga Moon" are previously released tracks, but the laid-back trio title track, the DeJohnette-fired "Gargoyles," and the swinging ballad "So in Love" are brand-new. While newer tracks might tempt her longtime fans to pick up this disc, it is those earlier selections, with their varied guests and sprinklings of Rosnes's magic, that make this not only a good buy, but an outright steal. --Ken Micallef
