3 out of 5 stars Where's Kind Of A Drag?.......2002-05-20

I bid on this one and purchased it based on the song listing provided. Kind Of A Drag by The Buckinghams is NOT ON THIS CD no matter what the song listing says! Even the photo of the CD cover does not have it listed. Only is the actual song listing on the sight the one that lists this missing song. Bummer!

5 out of 5 stars it's a happening.......2001-12-04

all the original songs in stereo
Little bit of soul actually sounds dated for '67 should be like '64
Soul Man,the great screetching sound(the blues brothers did a version of soul man)
Incense and Peppermints-what do the words mean?groovy man, cool psychedelic tune
Gimme Some Lovin'-another 'soul' song i think its steve winwood in the band
I Think We're Alone Now-another tommy james hit, children behave!
Happy Together, the turtles big hit that everyone was singing that year, classic pop style harmonies
Windy i used to think it was wendy for years, but another fine harmony by the association
Groovin' the rascals slow summertime ballad
the Letter- i think the 1st song to have airplane sound effects
Respect hmmm aretha's sock it to me anthem
if you want to hear some songs from '67 this is a good way to know them for the year, they were all popular and had good pop crafted tunes that are easy to listen to ,you still hear them on oldies stations as a regular playlist.

2 out of 5 stars Avoid.......2006-11-27

I bought this cd for one reason only- Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki". Unfortunately, this 1994 compilation cd has a tremendous amount of hiss which makes for an annoying and disappointing listening experience. You will be much happier buying one of Kyu's newer cds with better noise reduction technology, and as an added bonus, you will also be rewarded with his other material which you will not get with this bad cd.

5 out of 5 stars Sukiyaki and Other Great Songs.......2006-03-16

I bought this CD because I wanted "Sukiyaki" by the original artist, but this CD also many other great songs like "Blue Velvet", "Dominque", and "Rhythm Of The Rain". It also has a couple of great instrumentals, "Pipeline" and "Wipe Out".

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of songs........2006-02-01

Being that I was born in the mid-eighties, I did not have the priveledge of growing up listening to music of this sort. When I found this CD among my dad's collection I decided to give it a listen because I recognized some of the songs. I'm very glad I did!

I greatly enjoy almost all of the songs, in particular The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens.

The rest of the songs are top-notch "oldies" as well, easily recognizable classics. The only song I don't really care for is "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan & Dean, though it is still an okay song.

Overall, I would certainly recommend this CD... when you find one both a father and a daughter can easily enjoy together, it must be good.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on the KID who put this one together.......2002-11-18

This is one BAD example of the music of this decade. First, the 60s started on JAN.one but I guess that dosen't count!
If your looking to get a handle on where R+R (all) comes from this turkey an't it.

5 out of 5 stars I know all of the songs!.......2002-01-23

I hate compilation CD's that are supposed to be the best of something but manage to be the best of whatever singles the producer had lying around in the backseat of his car. This CD, however, is what it claims to be. I've never seen a compilation album with so many hits and so many recognizeable tunes. All of these songs are fun to listen to and the few songs you may not recognize are catchy 60-ish sounding riffs anyway. This is, by far, the most versatile CD I own.

5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous CD.......2000-06-23

Hello. It's a real nice collection most of all because it includes some artist i thought I never heard again. Some of them as The Kinks, The Vogues or Jan and Dean aren't easy to find in some other collections. The sound is excelent and the artists are well selected. Congratulations.

The stereo quality of the tracks is very good. "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "To Sir With Love" are my personal favorites. This CD is very reasonably priced with all of these great songs!

Even though some of these songs are available on better collections (Monkees, Association, Mamas & Papas), the rarer tracks make the CD worth investigating. All original versions.

Melanie was the Jewel of the Woodstock Generation. Like her three-decades-down-the-road heir, the woman born Melanie Safka made a quick splash as a radio-friendly singer-songwriter. Something of a male Donovan (what is this, no-surname syndrome?), Melanie took hits (like Jewel, too) for delivering what critics considered hippie-dippy platitudes. (She came to resent her "bliss ninny" image and rebelled against it following her late-'60s, early-'70s heyday.) But, also like Donovan, Melanie's best songs have aged nicely, thanks in large part to her knack for integrating her distinctive rasp into ingratiating hooks and solid folk-rock arrangements. Alternating between melismatic sing-alongs ("Lay Down," here in unedited seven-minute-plus form, her splendid cover of "Ruby Tuesday," "What Have They Done to My Song, Ma?") and precious novelty numbers ("The Nickel Song," "Brand New Key," "Animal Crackers"), Melanie wrote her own little bit of pop history, which is celebrated in this worthy 19-song retrospective. All the hits are here, remastered by art-rock avatar Robert Fripp. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Melanie by Fripp? Well all right!.......2006-12-23

Robert Fripp helped give the Roches their unique sound on their first and third releases. To put him in charge of a remastering of Melanie's work was plain brilliance. It's great to hear pristine versions of "Ring the Living Bell," "Brand New Key" ---when and how can "Gather Me" be reissued?--- "Together Alone," the live "Physcotherapy" (still fun), "Ruby Tuesday" (a fave) and "Peace Will Come" (I'm still waiting). "Leftover Wine" and "Bobo's Party" show how Melanie could rock with just her own guitar and voice. There are two problem tracks: The penny-whistles on "The Good Book" are mixed far too high and are abrasive; the mix for the eight-minute "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" is a mess. I mean a mess. Get yourself the vinyl release on "The Four Sides of Melanie," it rocks.

4 out of 5 stars Melanie? A true artist or a sign of her times?.......2006-05-31

This CD captures, some, but not all of Melanie's greatest moments. As a songwriter she is superb. As a guitar player she is unmannered & simple. As a vocalist she was quite original and quite good, especially her phrasing. The earlier cuts showcase the quirky quality of Melanie's voice. The middle period cuts prove that Melanie was indeed a great vocalist. This album inspired me to purchase 2 other Melanie CDs, "Moments From My Life" & " Crazy Love". The latter showcases Melanie new and far improved songwriting abilities. She is one of the best. However, the former is a disaster. Her voice? What happened? I can't even listen to it. All singers, with age, have lost some of their vocal instrument. But, Melanie has lost most, if not all of it. On certain cuts it sounds as if she is dying. Awful! Do not buy the latter Melanie albums if singing is your thing. But, her greatest hits package is very good & it highlights an artist at her prime.

3 out of 5 stars What a collection!!.......2006-03-01

I just read through some of the other reviews on this CD. I've heard most of these tracks already, so I wouldn't be in for much of a surprise.
But in response to the reviewers who complained briefly about the absence of "Bitter Bad," all I have to say is, this is only one CD, and you can't put everything all on one CD. At least, I'm assuming this is true, this CD does have the long version of "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)," which by the way, I have not heard the long version but have wanted to.
If you haven't heard much of Melanie's work, other than, say, "Brand New Key," which is usually only played around the holidays (around the anniversary of when it first hit #1), this CD is bound to change your impression of Melanie, for the better. Amazon.com's reviewer compares her with Jewel...funny, so would I, had that not already been done. Both use only their first name, and both are equally as talented, and underrated.
I do recommend this CD, but only give it 3 stars, as I'd like to hear for myself whether or not they really did put the long version of "Lay Down" on here.
Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Melanie the Great.......2005-09-13

Although I haven't heard this particular CD, I've heard all these songs before, though I couldn't say if they are all originals. I AM a Melanie fan. She has been a part of my life. I love her. All these early songs are of course of a different style than her mid 70s to mid 80s work, which had progressed to sheer brilliance. There's precious little to compare it with. I've never heard her work likened to witchy, as a reviewer said, which is plain stupidity. It WAS unique however, and I didn't always like it.

It took a little while to grow on me, but then I was hooked. Of course it is now passe, and also she has moved on. It was magic for it's time however, with it's folksy flowery appeal. Took me 30 years to work out the meaning of her lyrics, but now I don't care.

One must criticise the music companies once again for the constant stream of compilations. The normal studio albums contain so many rehashes of earlier work anyway. Her 90s and 2000s work is generally pretty ordinary compared to earlier. The music executives should be incarcerated for giving us now only a few compilations on CD rather than put out her brilliant albums, which maybe they plan to do after many more comps, but I was expecting them when CDs were first invented. I was willing to pay again even though I already own all the LPs. Here it is now 20-30 years after her best work, and still nothing. I may only live another 20 years. (barring disease or terrorism)

BTW Melanie's version of Lover's Cross is superior to Jim Croce's, though I love his work. Generally when she performed other people's songs, she improved on them.

This compilation is a small sampling of her earlier work from her youth, when she wrote and sung about 300 wonderful songs. So to say, where's Bitter Bad? Be real, this is only one CD.

For those knockers who are old enough to know better, you can continue wallowing in your ignorance and poor taste. "Oh yes, the Brand New Key girl". Gimme a break. These are the types who'd criticise the Beatles as "One Hit Wonders". For those of the younger generation, I know you have more sense, and I could do no better favour for you than to recommend you seek out Melanie's mid 70s to mid 80s material, and everything in-between. You WON'T be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Fripp On This Influential Pied Piper Of A Heartthrob.......2005-08-18

Not only was Melanie a highly attractive hippie flower child whose looks perhaps doomed her influence with the hippie revolution crowd (can an attractive woman be a rock star in the eyes of feminists without selling out as a sex symbol?) but she crafted highly individualistic interior based songs with context and sincerity.
This collection proves a great point of her place in music history offering great production and value..
She was a talent whose influences ranged not only to the current crop of singer songwriters but extended to gospel as the charting Lay Down by the Edward Hawkin Singers and even to the rockers Mott The Hoople who also covered her Lay Down on their 3rd CD Wildlife and also must have been admired at by the unique Robert Fripp Of King Crimson who was at the helm on this stellar collection.
The song collection is wonderful, sounds great, good liner notes and book and puts it all together nicely.

I really enjoy almost all of the songs on this CD. It is one of the best 60's collection CDs ever. It has a wide variety of songs, almost all of them easily recognizable. All in all, a very worthwile CD for listening to anytime!

5 out of 5 stars Rock & Roll in 1969 course number 101--even if they were limited to ten songs.......2006-08-14

This CD has a great selection of ten songs that were really big in 1969. The sound is great; and there are great photos of some of the groups represented on this CD. The liner notes lack any extensive essay; but who cares? You'll be transported back in time to 1969 with some great rock nostalgia. My only gripe is that this CD series limits the CD tracks to ten.

Another reviewer writes that Tommy James & The Shondells shouldn't have been picked twice since there was only room for ten songs on this CD. I think he has a good point; but I liked both "Crimson And Clover" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion" anyway. They are somewhat laid back, quasi-psychedelic songs that you can still hear occasionally on certain radio stations playing '60s music.

There are several different types of songs on this CD; and that's really a great plus! "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" has an awesome beat and is still sometimes played at sports events. "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies represents that bubblegum type of '60s song that is very catchy even if it's not the greatest music ever written. "Build Me Up Buttercup" has a terrific, almost triumphant sounding musical arrangement this is completely infectious; and "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" has a certain dramatic element to it that starts the CD off on a very strong note.

In short, if you have to pick just one CD to cover the year 1969, this is a great choice. It's not as comprehensive as I would like it to be because Rhino limited the "Billboard Rock & Roll" series to ten songs each. I recommend this CD for fans of music from the late '60s and people who just want to know a little bit more about some of the great hits put out in 1969.

5 out of 5 stars Billboard Top Rock'n' Roll Hits 1969.......2006-02-26

This series of discs are a nice addition to anyones 60s library. I don't know if I am the only one who's noticed but the 1969 disc has changed. I bought mine originally back in the early 1990's. Some of the songs on my edition are different. I bought mine at one of those record store chains back then. My tracks are 1. Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In (5th Dimension), 2. Sugar, Sugar (The Archies), 3. Dizzy (Tommy Roe), 4. I can't get next to you (The Temptations), 5. Crimson and Clover (Tommy James and the Shondells, 6. Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye (Steam), 7. Hair (The Cowsills), 8. Build me up Buttercup (The Foundations), 9. Time of the Season (The Zombies), and 10. Get Together (The Youngbloods). As you can see there are some different songs on mine. I don't know what happened but perhaps on the first editions of these CD's they had some of the chart information wrong and thats why they changed. Who knows. At any rate I would recommend buying these CD's. They make a wonderful collection.

5 out of 5 stars 1969 Top Rock rocks.......2005-09-23

This CD with the top pop hits of 1969 set the mood for our work on a 1969 Porsche 912. It's a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Billboard top hits of 1969.......2005-05-05

My mom loves this music, and when she introduced it to me, I really liked it, too. The best songs on here are Dizzy, Sugar Sugar, and Build Me Up Buttercup. Now my goal is to collect the whole 60's billboard series.

4 out of 5 stars Oliver.......2005-04-12

We get to enjoy the late Oliver singing Good Morning Starshine enough to make this collection worth while. The little man with a lisp was perfect for this song.

5 out of 5 stars One Great CD!.......2005-12-22

If you want to start a Jan and Dean collection, this is THE CD to buy. It includes their biggest hits, their most popular songs. It's good, clean, innocent fun to listen to. It's the CD that started off my growing collection. You'll love it! After picking up this one, move on to some of the others, preferably the 3 CD combo of "Drag City," The Little Old Lady From Pasadena," and Popsicle."

5 out of 5 stars Classical.......2005-01-31

I am a very big Beach Boy fan. Yes, Brian Wilson was influenced by Jan and Dean. Remember though he did write songs like "Sidewalk Surfin", and "Surf City"for them. Yet this album is filled with a lot of classics.

4 out of 5 stars Classical hits.......2004-12-21

This Jan and Dean album show the rock n' roll. This is stocked with classics like "Little Old Lady from Pasadena" and "Sidewalk Surfing." these songs share the same theme with the Beach Boys, but are equally great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent variety of J&D music.......2004-04-07

For anyone who is curious about the Jan and Dean era or about their music in general, this would be a excellent CD to own because it give a listener the feel for their type of music, a taste of this duo's very diverse talent and just some plain old great rock and roll oldies music! I am a Beach Boys fan by admission but I can see a great deal of influence on Brian Wilson by Jan and Dean! I highly recommend this CD...really excellent!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection Of Jan And Dean's Hits.......2002-07-18

Life and fame were very good to Jan and Dean, at least for a while, when they started out as a Garage Duo making the tours of local recording studios. They quickly took advantage of the happenstance of the rise of southern California surfer music to catch a wave to the top with an early hit, "Linda". Later came "Surf City", and a raft of together, such as "Honolulu Lulu", "The New Girl In School', and "Sidewalk Surfing" (which robbed the melody and chord progressions from Beach Boy pal Brian Wilson's "Catch A Wave). Later came such popular numbers as "Ride The Wild Surf", "You really Know How to Hurt A Guy", and of course, "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena".

In what is one of the most ironic twists involving their career, one of their biggest hits was with a song called "Dead Man's Curve", which chronicled a fateful race between a Jaguar XKE and a Corvette Sting Ray, which ends with the protagonist badly mangled in the crash. Just a year later Jan was himself badly injured in such a crash in his own Corvette, and suffered a number of permanent disabilities from it. Still, Jan and Dean performed for years later with rock and roll revival tours, and Jan still records, although in a very limited sense. This was wonderful music, and it still plays well. I listen to them often, and I'm sure you will too once you listen to this album of their collected hits. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Great Music but Overpriced!.......2007-03-10

"Billboard Top Rock 'n' Roll Hits: 1957-1961" offers up some fantastic music from the golden age of rock & roll.
The sound quality is great, as is the selection of hits.
My problem is that there are only 10 songs per disk!
Hey Billboard - this is the 21st Century - you're not selling vinyl anymore.
This set could have been released on 2 CDs and the price set accordingly.
So while I'd rate the music 5 "Stars", my overall rating is only a 3.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ROCK & ROLL GIFT.......2007-02-07

I got this for my parents for Christmas and they LOVE it. Great way to get your folks to boogie down and get their blood flowin'. They are having a blast with this CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift.......2007-01-16

I bought this box set for my dad for Christmas - his favorite "oldies" station in his rural hometown just switched to party mix! He really enjoys playing these CD's, although he's not really a CD collecting kind of guy. I'll be getting the next series for his birthday.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2005-02-17

These are real hits from the years indicated and separated by disk into the separate years. If you were around in those years and listening to the radio, you don't have to be told this. If the price is right for you, then I highly recommend you buy.

5 out of 5 stars 1962 one of the great years in rock .......2005-07-28

Billboard has many great rock n roll hit compilations, but this is one of my favorites. Green Onions is a great instrumental hit, Duke of Earl is a timeless classic from doo wop, and Peppermint Twist Part 1 and the Locomotion were two of the most popular dances that year. All in their original versions!

4 out of 5 stars A good CD despite having only 10 songs - but BUYER BEWARE!.......2005-01-25

In 1988/9 Rhino introduced its superb "Top Rock'n'Roll Hits" (1955-1974) series featuring 20 years of music on 20 CDs at 10 songs per year / per disc. (Hey, neat-o!)

Then in 1993 Rhino reissued the discs in the subset spanning 1960-1969 thus creating two different versions of each in the process. Because these discs are available via Amazon Marketplace, who knows which ones you'll get if you buy them used! If this is important to you, be sure to ask the seller(s) before placing your order(s).

The most obvious visual differences between the two editions are the song titles on both the front covers and the actual CDs. The 1988/9 editions feature mixed-case titles. The 1993 editions feature uppercase titles.

The 1993 editions also have the songs listed on the covers in the same order in which they appear on the discs. The 1988/9 editions list the songs in an almost random order which can be very frustrating while the disc is being played.

The song selections are also different; some moreso than others. For 1962 only track 1 was changed.

1988 (1) The 4 Seasons, "Big Girls Don't Cry"
1993 (1) Booker T. & The MG's, "Green Onions"

In this case, I definitely prefer the 1993 edition because "Green Onions" is just so friggin' awesome! It's interesting that Rhino decided to swap out a song about crying with a song about onions. If it had been called "White Onions" there'd be no way those girls could hold back their tears no matter how big they are.

[Note: To my knowledge, the CDs spanning 1955-1959 and 1970-1974 have not been revised. One may also surmise that Rhino believes rock-n-roll died with the advent of disco since the title used for the discs spanning 1975-on-up is simply "Top Hits" - not to be confused, of course, with Rhino's other, similar series, "Top Pop Hits".]

4 out of 5 stars Stingy, stringy, stingy.......2004-11-03

Once again, we have 10 measly songs, all good ones. They were hits in 1962; I remember them well; I was there. They touched me. If you care about the chronology of hit songs, the times they represent, buy this CD. I just don't know why they don't charge $2-$3 more and double the number of songs on the CD. I can name 10 more just like them from 1962 but I won't bore you further. Four stars this time for too few songs.

5 out of 5 stars doo-wop doo-wop.......2002-06-30

Green Onions the cool hammond organ sound, one reason why i learned to play the keys
Duke Of Earl (before rap)
Soldier Boy the saxophone sendup harmony
Sheila tommy roe's buddy holly sound
Peppermint Twist-did you see joey d on the pbs doo-wop&pop special?
Locomotion written by carol king but i like the grand funk version better
The Wanderer hey its Dion's bad boy song
Breaking Up Is Hard to do, the 1st version by neil sedaka doo-wop style, great harmonies neil multi tracked
Johnny Angel a pleasing pop sound but does it try to hard for a dream?
Palisades Park a summer hit for the amusement park of that time
good listening in the car while driving

5 out of 5 stars A Variety of Classics.......1998-06-30

All these hits appear in their original versions with great sound quality.
