Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31
If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.
Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25
It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.
pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19
It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!
Excellent CD.......2005-03-20
I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

Album Description
This is the first ever collection of this very talented singer, songwriter, producer, arranger. From his first sides with the John Barry produced Band Of Angels, through a sample of his Manfred Mann recordings & onto his solo singles plus debut album in 1970. The emphasis is very much on D'Abos own songs & there is a fascinating progression of songwriting styles reflecting the times that this compilation covers. The compilation ends with D'Abo's version of his own hit composition 'Handbags & Gladrags', made a hit by Chris Farlowe & Rod Stewart. 2001.
Customer Reviews:
A Must for Fans!.......2006-11-01
This Mike dÀbo compilation covers records made in the perod 1964-1970; note that no Manfred Mann recordings are included.
During 1964-65 dÀbo was the lead singer of the obscure band "Band of Angels". The band released 3 singles which are included. Interesting that the first 2 a-sides are hard-rocking, not unlike the syle of early Easybeats, where as the b-side are softer Merseybeat inspired stuff. Though in ways remarkable all singles are really quite solid.
His first solo-single "See the Little People" from 1969 is the closest you get the the well-known Manfred Mann sound - a great song and along with "Californian Line" and "Handbags and Gladrags" my favourites on the CD.
His next single "Cinderella Arabella" was a very commercial thing and the b-side "Miss Me in the Morning" is actually much better.
His complete 12 tracks 1970 UNI album rounds up the compilation. A lot of it is pretty uninteresting white-soul/pop. Some of if may remind of John Paul Young though most of it never comes near the power of his best records. Two tracks stand out though; the country-inspired "Californian Line" and of his classic "Handbags and Gladrags" - a song much in the singer -songwriter tradition of people like James Taylor.
For fans of Mike dÀbo this compilation is obviously a must!

Customer Reviews:
Solid Brit 60's blue-eyed soul .......2007-04-14
It's funny, classic soul music has always appealed to a wider audience in the UK than in its native America. Long after once-famous soul stars found an audience hard too find at home they had no difficulty in attracting fans to live shows in England, Scotland and Ireland. Accordingly, it is no surprise to find a bevy of English singers either covering American classics or recording songs in a similar style.
Chris Farlowe, while never finding any acceptance in North America, was more or less a household name in the UK during the mid sixties. This collection gathers together the best of his best years - with Immediate during the years 1965 to 1969. At times Farlowe sings in a similar vein to The Walker Brothers - dramatic "blue-eyed soul". At other times he becomes a little edgier as he tackles Pickett and Redding. The Jagger-Richards penned Out of Time is the definitive version of a great song. He is less successful with Yesterday's Papers and an odd Paint it Black.
This a cd that I can recommend only to Farlowe fans and to lovers of British blue-eyed soul. Although he certainly has a strong, distictive and interesting voice and although the material is varied and the musicianship professional, as it usually is with Britsoul, Farlowe is unlikely to appeal to many who are not already well-aquainted with his music.
For me three stars is a mild thumbs up.

Customer Reviews:
THIS is the 'real' Rod Stewart.......2003-07-29
Forget all about disco trash like "Blondes Have More Fun" and "Body Wishes", THIS is what Roderick David Stewart is actually capable of. Stewart may have chosen to cater to the pop- and disco crowd of the 80s, but back in the early seventies he was perhaps the very best interpreter of folk, blues and country that the United Kingdom had to offer, and the team of Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood turned out some of the best folk/rock albums of all time.
This is definitely NOT where you go to get "Baby Jane", "Some Guys Have All The Luck" or "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy", no, this is the very best of Rod Stewart's first six studio albums under his own name, back when he was a young singer/songwriter with a musical vision that didn't include pink outfits, spiky hair and lots and lots of synth.
Just listen to his interpretations of "Country Comforts" and "Mama You've Been On My Mind", or the Stewart/Wood originals "Gasoline Alley" and "Every Picture Tells A Story". Or his own compositions (why doesn't he write and compose his own songs anymore?), like "Man Of Constant Sorrow" and the beautiful "Mandolin Wind".
This is how Rod Stewart should be remembered, as a first-rate interpreter and a great songwriter who knew and understood the origins of the music he played without being weighed down by it.

DÁbo at his Most Commercial!.......2006-10-27
"Handbags and Gladrags" is the title of one Mike DÁbo's best loved and often covered songs. The song also gives title to this compilation of songs from d`Abo's two President albums released in 1987 and 1988.
These albums were d`Abo try for a come-back as a recording artist - 10 years had passed since his previous album "Smith and d`Abo". d`Abo always had a great skill of writing catchy commercial pop-tunes, and this compilation probably shows him at his most main-stream.
He has fine voice that at times could be mistaken for Phil Collins or Cat Stevens.
The earliest of his President always was "Indestructable" which had few good and memorable songs like "Revival" and "Ships" but most of more or less forgettable.
1988's "Tomorrow's Troubadour" was more or less the same recipe, only slightly stronger. His re-recording of "Handbags and Gladrags" and the title track stand out, but also his revival of two Manfred Mann hits "Just Like a Woman" and "Mighty Quinn" are quite good, though they don't really add anything new to the originals. The Carribean inspired "Isle of Debris" also is quite appealing.
Compared to his early albums such as "Down At Rachels' Place" these album are bound to disappoint a little, on the other hand fans of DÁbo's voice and songwriting, like myself, will still find several moments of enjoyment and pleasure with this compilation.
