Like a human infusion of chamomile tea, hearing Van Morrison's voice has the effect of instantly soothing even the most stressed listener. That said, some of his releases have been so mellow that they muted the '60s soul influences that had been a part of Van's appeal. Not so with Magic Time, a wonderful balance of groove and smoothness, with a "live off the floor" feel evident throughout the disc. Right from the start "Stranded" shows Van at his crooner best--relaxed, present, and joyful. "Celtic New Year" comes next with a very Astral Weeks feel, leading one to believe that this disc might be sedentary through and through… until "Keep Mediocrity at Bay" kicks in, a feisty blues romp proving that though in his sixties, Morrison still has the sass of his best previous days. Morrison's cover of Sinatra's brassy "This Love of Mine" and Perry Como's "I'm Confessin'" are full of cheek and charm. Morrison-as-producer has chosen stellar horn sections that elevate the music from good to great and come from an obvious deep love of classic blues and soul. He's a lover and a fighter (the disc has two references to his disdain of the music industry: "They Sold Me Out" and "Carry On Regardless"), but ultimately true to his own musical vision. This destined-to-be-classic release will please a wide variety of his fans. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars Van morrison-Magic Time.......2007-05-31

What can one say about one of the greatest artist of modern times? He could sing the phone book and make it interesting. I've loved Van the Man since the days of THEM and have more of his music in my collection than anybody else. I've seen every performer I've wanted to see worth seeing...almost...except Van and Paul Simon...and just may go to Austin in September if gas comes down! This particular CD is blues and he sticks to the genre like syrup on pancakes on Saturday morning....ummmmm! He is a true genius that deserves to be affected and particular and maybe even strange and a recluse if choosen...like greta garbo...just wants to be left alone. If anyone calls tell them you haven't seen me. He will be worth shedding a tear over when he is gone because he has made the world I live in so much better. Thanks Van the Man for Magic Time always.

3 out of 5 stars DISAPOINTED LONG TIME FAN.......2007-05-15

Definately not his best effort. In fact I have only listened to it one time. Having been a fan since the 60's I can easily say that this is not worth the time or money to include it in your collection. There are so many memorable tunes from Van the Man don't disapoint your self with this one.

3 out of 5 stars standard van morrison fare. nothing wrong with that........2007-02-21

3 and 1/2 stars i would say. this is an enjoyable set, absolutely. there is not really a bad van morrison recording out there (heck, i even get enjoyment from "a period of transition"), but let's face it: van is not trying very hard here. this is the kind of recording he is so used to making that he could call it in on the phone from home. a little r & b, plenty of mid-tempo stuff with nice tame saxophone, standard blues harmonica and some gentle string arrangement stuff. all nice, all predictable. none of it classic (listen to "astral weeks," or "veedon fleece," for the classic stuff). the only tune here that's close to outstanding is "gypsy in my soul," which is very, very strong. lots of the rest has an almost cheesy las vegas feel to it. and hey, nothing wrong with that; i find it enjoyable, myself. it's just not great. it doesn't even try for great. it is what it is: an easy to listen to piece of entertainment. fine by me.

5 out of 5 stars A lot to like.......2007-02-10

I'm not really familiar with the career of Van Morrison or many of his recordings, but I was completely taken with this terrific collection of songs. Morrison has a smokey, bluesly delivery here that is tremendously appealing. My favorite tracks are "Stranded," and "Greta Garbo," but there aren't any losers on the whole CD. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An eclectic mix of soul, jazz and blues.......2007-01-13

Van Morrison never fails to put across an intimate feel with his music. It seems to place you in a smoke filled juke joint somewhere in middle america, or in an upscale jazz club in some big city the moment you listen to it. His distinctive vocals always deliver the heart of the piece he is performing. This collection is exceptionally good, not one track you will likely skip during playtime. Well done...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Details

Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

    3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

    5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
    Bravo Rhino!

    5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection, Even Better Price.......2005-10-14

I picked this CD up as an afterthought while searching for some background music for a play I was putting together, and while it cost less than half of the other swashbuckler soundtrack CDs, it has more tracks than most, more variety than any(dramatic to romantic to action), and solid sound quality. If you're after a whole collection of the Korngold era tunes in one CD, this is it.

    4 out of 5 stars An Oldie Re-Issue, But Still A Goodie!.......2005-04-03

A re-issue of tracks from Marco Polo 8.223607, 1995. Practically perfect in every way. But the brass could be a bit more crisp and defined. Primarily an early work from master restoration magicians Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg. And now at "popular prices." Don't delay on this one!

And it will buckle your swash, too.

These performances appeared in 1995 on Naxos's full-price sister label, Marco Polo, and are among a spate of movie music scores making their appearances now at budget price. Some are wonderful - like Honegger's score for 'Les Misérables,' Georges Auric's 'Beauty and the Beast,' and Wojciech Kilar's 'Dracula.' Some don't stand up too well on their own, like Steiner's 'King Kong' or Waxman's 'Objective: Burma!'. But this one definitely has the best of the best, all in that late-romantic, richly scored music we associate with the genre. The producers have put together some of the best cues from four swashbucklers and from beginning to end this is music to enjoy, with no dead wood anywhere along the way.

The Main Title of Miklós Rosza's 'The King's Thief' is a heckuva lot better than the 1955 Edmund Purdom movie for which it was written. Victor Young's 'Scaramouche' is represented by nine cues, among them the delightful 'Main Title' and the faux-baroque 'Pavane.' The inventor of this sort of movie music, Erich Maria Korngold, is here represented by six cues from the 1935 Errol Flynn blockbuster, 'Captain Blood.' All five cues are terrific and sweep you along, but I particularly like 'Slaves--Arabella and Blood,' a seven-minute tone poem of great beauty and ingenuity. Max Steiner, a transplanted Viennese like Korngold, contributes six cues from 'The Three Musketeers,' also from 1935. The love theme is really gorgeous.

These scores were reconstructed by the late Christopher Palmer ('The King's Thief'), William Stromberg ('Scaramouche') and John Morgan ('Captain Blood' and 'The Three Musketeers') from conductor's piano scores; the full scores, like many of their era, were lost. In one case the score had only a violin line. The three arrangers attempted, then, to reproduce the orchestrations from the movie sound track itself, a difficult task at best, but it sounds to me like they did a marvelous job collectively. These orchestrations have the sweep and grandeur of the originals.

The Brandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Potsdam, Germany) is conducted by Richard Kaufman. They are beautifully played and recorded.

This one is worth having if you love the flamboyant style favored in adventure films; this is the crème de la crème.

Magic Time-The Millennium Ballroom Sessions. We've combed the Columbia vaults to present. Magic Time, the most comprehensive set of Ballroom and Millennium material ever assembled: a three CD set with nearly three dizzying hours of music, produced by Curt Boettcher and Keith Olsen, whose dazzlingly inventive soundscapes and choral arrangements pushed the boundaries of music far beyond the breaking point to create a perfect hybrid of Soft Rock and Psychedelia, circa '65-'68. Produced with the full cooperation of the Ballroom/Millennium members, Magic Time comes to you direct from the original analog master tapes, and includes the complete Ballroom album plus unissued cuts, the timeless Millennium album Begin, alternate and single mixes of Millennium tracks, as well as interviews with band members and rare photos from their archives. A whopping 62 tracks -- 22 previously unissued! 2001

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Would have made 1 really good CD.......2004-04-12

3 stars is because there is a lot of filler in the collection, like instrumental versions of songs (songs with vocals removed) and a couple of clunkers. I agree with other reviewers that "The Begin" album should be available as a seperate CD, but I feel more strongly that the "The Ballroom" with a few bonus tracks from Curt Boetchner and Summer's Children should also be a separate CD (that would be 5 stars). I think the Ballroom versions of The Island and 5 a.m. are a little better, they are not soaked in unecessary reverb. Bigger fan of Sagitarius than The Millenium, but I think that is just taste. Millenium really put out a quality product and after repeated listenings I'm sure it will grow on me.

4 out of 5 stars "Begin" is masterful, a 3 CD set is a bit of overkill though.......2003-09-29

Sundazed should issue "Begin" separately...it is a superb LP for those into late 60s AM pop music. The first two CDs have some excellent cuts, but the set approaches overkill for casual fans of Boettcher's work what with all the instrumental tracks and such. It's a shame that the early 1990s reissue of "Begin" is out of print.

        5 out of 5 stars a lot of Boettcher.......2002-09-07

First off, this set is fantastic. If you're into Boettcher, this is for you. The sound on the Ballroom stuff is great. Apparently the Revola reissue was mastered from a cassette, so if you have that you'll find the sound here startlingly crisp and present.

If you're unfamiliar with this stuff and like psychedelia and lush light pop like Pet Sounds, The Millennium's Begin might be the next place to go for you. Sundazed really should have released this set in two parts with the Begin album packaged separately. I've turned many casual music listeners onto this record but few would really want to shell out [$$$] for rarities and outtakes just to get it. It belittles the album's significance that it's only available as the last disc of this box set.

        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful Collection!!.......2002-06-08

I bought this CD because one of the lead singer of The Ballroom, Michelle O'mally passed away last year after a long illness. She was one of my dear friends. I have always heard her private work, but never this collection. I was so amazed! It was incredible! Not just because I love Michelle, but I love the sound! Michelle has a voice like Karen Carpenter. They sound like the Carpenters to me. If you enjoy this type of mellow sound you will love these CDs. They really are fantastic and well worth the money!

        5 out of 5 stars The Millenium/Ballroom rerelease.......2002-06-08

One of the lead singers of this band was my dear friend Michelle O'malley, who we lost last year to a long illness. I had only heard her private work and never heard this CD. It is so great! I love it! So much fun from that generation! Wonderful guitar! Harmonized beautifully. Michelle sounds like Karen Carpenter to me, she has such a beautiful voice. Not only do I love Michelle, but I couldn't believe how much I love this CD! REALLY! It is great!

... es encontrar algo de primera, música con magia!

OPA said "Hello" from Uruguay to New York City many years ago, and made the musical enchantment of the sonic vision of a true "poligloto", Hugo Fattoruso , along with brother Jorge Osvaldo and Ringo Theilmanns.

From the ashes of the fabulous famous "Los Shakers" sucessful in South America and would have continued, until the Opa was historically formed.

Opa mixed more than Gilberto Gil's famous frase "chiclete com banana" **, as Opa combined the influences of the candombe and murga from their homeland , brasilian sambossa, and jazz along with the rock sensibilities of the Beatles.

From the original tapes of OPA in the early incarnation (now avaliable , released in Spain),more consolidation of funk and samba has made this much to long forgotten recordings "rise form the ashes" , and become not only dancehall favorites, but the harmonic/melodic genius of Hugo (along with longtime musical compatriot "El Negro" Rada) is at peak during this time.

(Actually, Hugo Fattoruso has made major contributions as a sideman with Airto's "Fingers" grupo, Flora Purim, and many others, along with his incredible recordings with "Trio Fattoruso" and a recent solo piano release ~ Rada still much beloved in Uruguay, although his musics lately concentrate more to earn him a living than the original beautiful mad genius of his conceptions).

Aside form the grooving material, this cd features the fabulous composition "Corre Niña (Run Girl), and a top flight version of Rada's classic "Montevideo", both compete as the centerpiece tracks on the recording. "Tombo in 7/4", a staple of the Airto band has a beautiful intro before taking off into the ritmo in the time signature prescribed in the title!
"Muy Lejos Te Vas" is inspired as much by its rich harmony as in the subtle Beatles influence.

Percolations on the drums, solid basslines and impeccable hrmonic /melodic concept made Opa a grupo that will never be forgotten again. Some compatible interaction with sidemen also, no one gets in the way of the great sounds.

1000 stars , not a wasted moment. ¡ Con ritmo, estilo y sonido! ¡¡Viva Opa!!

        nos vemos~

** "Chiclete..", Gil refers to mixing Brasilian musics with music form the United States,~gum, chiclete (USA) mixes with banana(Brasil). Opa mixed freely and easily the many styles of sound that was their influences!

I first heard and bought both albums in the '70's and have loved them. It's great that these two albums have been put on CD and I can't recommend them highly enough for fans of latin/fusion/jazz. These are classic albums that haven't lost a thing over the last 25 years.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz "for export" from Uruguay, one step ahead of his time.......2002-02-20

Yes, Music from Uruguay to the world. if you want to hear "first class latin jazz", buy this CD. It's a classic of the uruguayan music. You can feel the fresh air of Montevideo in your head, while the CD run!!!!
The Fattorusso brothers give lessons of fussion. Great work of Airto too, and Ruben Rada, of course, in percussion...

5 out of 5 stars If you love Return to Forever..........2001-09-18

This album is explosive. There's not much more to say. I'm a bit of a romantic, so my favorite track is "Paper Butterflies [Muy Lejos Te Vas]", with its delicate vocals and whispering flute (played by the noted Hermeto Pascoal). I may be biased, though, since my wife is a talented flautist herself. The guest appearances on these two albums (combined for reissue on one disc) read like a who's who in Latin jazz-fusion: the aforementioned Hermeto Pascoal, David Amaro (guitars), Airto Moreira (percussion and production) and Flora Purim (vocals on "Arise").
In some cases this music is sentimental, in others it's a bit hokey, but it is always inspired. The Fattoruso brothers have been too overlooked in the jazz community. I purchased this album because of Airto, but came to love it because of Hugo and George Fattoruso.
So, if you like the early, more Latin-tinged fusion of Chick Corea's Return to Forever (think the "Return to Forever" album and "Light as a Feather"), then you'll indeed love this.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any lover of latin jazz.......2000-04-20

I cannot believe this has been released on c.d.! What an original sound this group had,I had the pleasure of hearing them live in the early `70,s in S.Fla. "Golden Wings" still holds up today. They inspired my own musical career, greatly.
