Night Calls
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Whatever the style of the song, Joe Cocker delivers his adaptions with relentless spirit and professionalism. This brilliant collection of blues, ballads, and rock 'n roll explodes in 5.1 Digital Surround - transforming each unique presentation into a whole new music experience. Grammy® Award winning artist Joe Cocker has been making hit records since the 1960's, and Night Calls is no exception. Cocker continues his tradition of doing powerful reditions of popular songs, but putting a little more soul & spirit in his versions. Clapton's "Can't Find My Way Home", Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", and the Beatles' "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" all get the treatment. The stunning 5.1 mix creates more room for Cocker's heartfelt vocals. 5.1 Producer: David Tickle 5.1 Mixed By: David Tickle

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Emotionally Heartfelt.......2006-05-18
Joe Cocker has one of the most distinctive gravelly voices in R & B history. He's always stuck to his roots and never gone with temporary fads or novelties. This collection is another classic with great covers from the Beatles, Elton John and Gary Wright. His interpretive voice has always been the focal point of his songs, but in DTS 5.1, you are surrounded (as if in concert) by his presence. The completely adept and intuitive musicians that accompany him add more atmosphere without taking from his performance. Imagine hearing him in live in a theater and you'll know what to expect from this warm and heartfelt album.
Night Calls.......2003-06-08
I'm a big Joe Cocker fan. This album is his first in the 90's.This version of the album where released in USA in 1992, but the orginal version where released in europe 1991.The album is not one of his best.I like him better on albums like "Cocker" (1986), "Have a little faith" (1994) and on his new release "Respect yourself" (2002).My favorite songs on this album is "Love is alive", a real rocker, and "Night calls".I like the powerballad "You've got to hide you're love away" too.
I saw him live in Oslo Spektrum in january 1992 on his "Night calls world tour, and he rocked the house down.
If you're not a Cocker-fan, buy the best of-album "Greatest Hits" (1998).
Joe shines on this platinum seller........2001-10-29
Joe Cocker's first studio release of the 90's proves to be an enjoyable listen. "Night Calls" sold over 2 million copies in Germany alone upon it's release. The cd opens with the Bryan Adams tune "Feels Like Forever" which is a fantastic ballad that would have been a monster hit if radio stations in the U.S would have given it some airtime? It's so true that Joe can make a song his own. The majority of his covers usually outshine the originals. Wait till you hear his takes on "Can't Find My Way Home" and "Love Is Alive". They blow the original versions away by Steve Winwood and Gary Wright. The title track has a little ELO overtone thanks to a great production job by Jeff Lynne. Joe also lends his vocal chords to a fantastic gospel feel remake of the Beatles "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" complete with a church like chorus. Joe is like fine wine that keeps getting better with age. The most disticntive growl in rock n roll never sounded better.
He Covers All Styles.......2000-09-20
I guess my title can ahve a double meaning. First of all, Joe Cocker offers varying adaptations of blues, ballads, and rock n roll. Secondly, Joe covers artists from Prince to Elton John to Gary Wright and boy does he put some oomph into Love Is Alive. Got to love those background vocals on that track.
Whatever the style of the song, Joe delivers his adaptation with the upmost spirit and professionalism. On the Beatles, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, Joe makes this song his own changing the arrangements to suit his own style. Feels Like Forever and When A Woman Cries are two more standouts which show case Mr. Cocker at his most passionate. Maybe not quite an all time classic but it sure rates a winner to my ears.

Customer Reviews:
Quilter deserves better..........2005-11-10
Was this recording of Quilter songs (Complete Folk-Song Arrangements and Complete Part-Songs for Women's Voices) a vanity project for soprano Amanda Pitt? It is hard to explain in any other terms, for her voice is not pleasant to hear. It is a pinched, badly produced, squally sound - the sort of standard one would expect in a not very gifted singing student. Why Naxos permitted this travesty of a recording under their label is a mystery.
The majority of the songs on this CD are sung by the aforesaid Amanda Pitt (soprano). The other singers in this project are of a better standard - in the case of Philip Langridge, beautiful to listen to. This recording is not worthy of his excellent career and lovely tenor voice. The other two singers - mezzo Joanne Thomas and baritone David Wilson-Johnson - are not bad, either, although the mezzo doesn't get a single solo. The lack of a solo for Ms Thomas is glaringly evident when compared to the ten (10) solos which Ms Pitt sings. (10 out of 21 solos - definitely an unfair ratio. Of these ten solos, several could have been given to the mezzo to sing - they were certainly not beyond the average mezzo range.)
The rest of the album consists of duets - thirteen of them. Eleven of the thirteen duets are soprano/mezzo, and in spite of the mezzo's voice (from what one is permitted to hear of it) isn't bad, the duet performances are frankly awful, chiefly because of Ms Pitt. Even the superior quality of Philip Langridge's singing cannot save the two duets he sings with Amanda Pitt.
It's artistically an insulting and atrociously unbalanced distribution of material.
Look for the John Mark Ainsley/Lisa Milne recording of Quilter songs & arias. Admittedly, it doesn't include most of the duets on this CD, but oh, the sheer pleasure of hearing well-trained and lovely voices give Quilter a worthy treatment!

beautiful songs.......2007-05-09
A welcome reissue in CD format from old LP's of Carpenters compositions : song cycles of very well known lyrics. Particularly fascinating are the renderings of poems from "Gitanjali", a collection of poems by Rabindranath Tagore in English translated from original Bengali; a work that got Nobel prize in 1913 (Not the Pullitzer prize as mentioned in th accompanying text). The songs on lyrics/poems by other poets, all americans are just as beautiful. Well done.
A flawless and fascinating recital.......2005-04-14
This 2-CD set by soprano Carole Bogard is an absolute must-have for lovers of American songs, song recitals in general, or great singing. Culled from three long-out-of-print LPs and some performance tapes recorded for broadcast in Europe, it includes songs by Carpenter, Flanagan, Copland, Rorem, and the little-known Richard Cumming and John Woods Duke. And yet, there is not a single weak track on the entire set. Every song is interesting (something that cannot be said for many similar recitals recorded today), and each and every song is performed with musical acuity and an attention to words.
Particularly interesting, to me, were the songs by John Alden Carpenter. Largely neglected by modern singers and scholars, Carpenter wrote what many feel is the most successful fusion of classical music with jazz, the ballet tone-poem "Skyscrapers." It had the misfortune to premiere in 1924, the same year as Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"; but whereas "Rhapsody" was more of a pastiche, "Skyscrapers" blends the jazz and classical aspects flawlessly, producing an exciting and well-crafted work that deserves a wider audience.
The Carpenter songs presented here are not jazzy, but they do reveal a greater depth of feeling and originality in construction than one hears nowadays from the songs of Andre Previn or Jake Heggie. And the other pieces are equally excellent.
I highly recommend this album, especially for Sunday afternoon or summertime listening...between the excellence of the songs and the excellence of Bogard's singing, you just melt into the music and become one with the warm, intimate feeling that this recital engenders.
