It's taken a mere 28 years, but Kiss frontman Paul Stanley has finally followed up the, er, promise of his part of the band's 1978 quartet of post-Love Gun solo ego-trips. Yet he's mostly eschewed Kiss's fist-pumping histrionics and sonic clichés in favor of a darker turn into the melodic nu-metal of "Lift" and "Bulletproof," the pop-punk sheen of "Wake Up Screaming," and obligatory power ballads like "Second to None," "Loving You...," and "Everytime I See You Around." The latter sensibility belies the touch of popmeister Desmond Childs as co-writer with Stanley of most of the material. Yet Childs, who's been churning out similar, chart-ready slices of rock dramaturgy for artists great and small since the '80s, can hardly be blamed by the Kiss Army for turning their sassy, beloved Star Man into Bon Jovi. That honor goes to Stanley himself, who self-produced his own post-punk-inflected reincarnation as Big Rock Balladeer. "Where Angels Dare," indeed. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Live to Win is new the solo release from iconic KISS frontman Paul Stanley. The voice and songwriting force behind such KISS classics as "Detroit Rock City," "Black Diamond," Hard Luck Woman" and "Tears Are Fallin'," Stanley's career with KISS spans more than three decades and in excess of 100 million records sold worldwide.

Stripping all the legendary bombast away, what becomes starkly clear is that besides rocking relentlessly, the power of human emotion and conviction on Live to Win can rattle not only the walls, but also touch the heart and soul of the listener. "What I wanted to do on this album was sing about my life because my life is not that different than anybody else's," he continues. "The truth is, what we all deal with in life is pretty similar. You change the names and the story's the same."

"This album is purely a labor of love," says Stanley. "It is a labor of passion, and something where I was concerned with turning out the album I heard in my head, without regard for having glitz and star power from other sources. It was purely about making the album I wanted to make." While the heartfelt "Loving You Without You Now" was written without any outside collaboration, the remainder of the album reunites him with former KISS songwriting partners Desmond Child [Aerosmith, LeeAnn Rimes] and Holly Knight [Tina Turner, Pat Benatar], and introduces new collaborators including Andreas Carlsson [Bon Jovi, Britney Spears], John 5 [Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson] and Marti Frederiksen [Aerosmith, Faith Hill]. Seven of the ten tracks were co-written with Child and/or Carlsson, with Stanley and Child joined by John 5 on "Where Angels Dare" and Frederiksen on "Lift," and Knight teaming with the frontman on "It's Not Me."

Live to Win is self-produced by Stanley, who provides lead vocals, guitar and percussion alongside a studio core of guitarist Corky James, drummer Victor Indrizzo and keyboardist Harry Sommerdahl. Also performing on the album are former KISS bandmate Bruce Kulick and guitarist John 5.

"I've always believed that when you give somebody an album, it should be like a fresh newspaper, where you get ink on your fingers and it's today's news," says Stanley, who wrote and co-wrote the ten tracks on Live to Win specifically for the new release. "For me, this album is where I'm at now - This is where things are in my life, and my perspective on my music."

3 out of 5 stars Hard rockin' Kiss frontman sings mainstream rock.......2007-06-03

For his first solo album since 1978's self-titled "Paul Stanley," this Kiss frontman has produced a batch of polished rock songs that reach back to mainstream '90s arena acts, with the backing of modern players (guitarist Corky James, drummer Victor Indrizzo, and keyboardist Harry Sommerdahl) who've powered mainstream hits for Avril Lavigne, Macy Gray and Carrie Underwood. That latter connection, via Carrie Underwood to American Idol, isn't one to miss as these overwrought power ballads could easily pad one of AI's rockers' debut albums.

Kiss fans will notice that Stanley's written with several of his early collaborators, including Desmond Child and Holly Knight, but he's also brought in Andreas Carlsson, who's worked with Bon Jovi, and Marti Frederiksen, who's penned songs for country crossover diva Faith Hill. Stanley set out to "sing about my life because my life is not that different than anybody else's," and the results are human-scale songs that skip the rock-god grandeur of Kiss. Such songs turn out to be substantially more pedestrian than the best work of Kiss.

The band has studio chops (that is, this isn't the sort of organic band effort one would expect from Kiss), and Stanley's in good voice. His production adds a touch of oomph, but not enough to give this any sort of sweaty rock band rampage, and the album's power ballads, "Second to None" and "Loving You Without You Now" have neither the story or heart of "Beth." Kiss Army members may want to stash a copy of this in their tents, just don't pack it in your day pack. [©2007 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

4 out of 5 stars Infectious tunes that won't leave you alone.......2007-06-01

The first time I listened to Live to Win I wasn't particularly impressed. But for some reason I kept coming back to it, and this week it won't leave me alone. Particularly bothersome are "Wake Up Screaming," and "Everytime I See You Around." These melodies keep popping up again and again, like a bad case of hiccups.

Live to Win has some great songs and shows that Paul Stanley still has a bit of juice left in him after all these years. While he was always the strongest composer in KISS (Detroit Rock City, Love Gun, Hard Luck Woman), it never hurts to have a little help. Several cowriters lent a hand, most notably Desmond Child, who has written and produced some of the most memorable rock anthems of the past two decades, including Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer," "Bad Medicine" and "Keep The Faith," Aerosmith's "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)," and KISS' 80's hits, "I Was Made For Loving You" and "Heaven's On Fire."

Except for "It's Not Me," in which Paul eschews fame and stardom ("It's not me . . . . I'm not you're savior."), musically and lyrically Live To Win could have easily been the next KISS album. Yes, the sound is a little different than what you might be used to from KISS, but Stanley and Simmons have proven as adept at changing musical styles as they are at makeup and costumes.

If you're waiting for the next KISS album, you might like to pick this up in the meantime. Live to Win is a sold pop-rock album that just won't leave you alone.

It sounds like second rate Bon Jovi!. Unless you are a Huge Stanley or Kiss fan who collects everything, stay away from this, it's awful!.

4 out of 5 stars Live to Win Indeed!.......2007-05-19

I actually won this cd in a local radio contest,so I otherwise would not have heard it.First off,it is a relatively short cd in length, but it is a good listen. Not a bad track on the whole thing. This is a good cd to listen to while driving down the highway to kind of cast your cares away for a little while. You will not find any scathing editorials on todays times or how the world is out of control(that was covered on the new Megadeth cd!),but what you will find are crafty, well written songs that will take you back to when music was plain and simple and to be enjoyed. It's actually kind of refreshing!Just listen to it!

5 out of 5 stars Live to Win - AWESOME.......2007-05-01

What a great great album. I cannot listen to it enough. It was really well worth the wait. My favorite song being "Lift me up" I could not get enough of. However now seeing him in concert and seeing him perform these songs there is no one favourite. If the next solo album is "hope to live" please make it sooner rather than later.

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hymns for every one.......2002-12-01

As I have said already..I am from espiscopal church..these my songs are well know by me...these songs give encouragement when it seems that all hope is lost..these are tunes that are well received....they are also very simple for the every day person to gain strength from day to day..they will become your daily prayer.....

5 out of 5 stars Super Praise!.......2000-06-10

Praise The Lord offers the listener traditional hymns in the English/British tradition. the clarity of the voices make it possible for the listener to follow the words distinctly. The organ soars as accompaniment. the CD provides organ and choral quality for the novice and the experienced musician.

5 out of 5 stars A True Contender For Best Album of the Nineties.......2006-03-10

With Stanley Road Paul Weller has managed to prove to his fans and his critics that he is still an important musician even in his solo days. He hasn't written 12 good songs, instead, he's written one great album. A factor in any great album is the overall feel that perpetuates each song, making them all feel as though they deserve their place and complimenting the songs that come before and after them.

A mostly guitar driven album, Weller fuses good solos and riffs with his usual effective lyrics, often ending a song with a long instrumental that gently ushers in the next song, which gladly and competently carries the album along. However, there is the occasional song that primarily uses the piano evoking another great feel. Though these songs are quite different from the guitar based ones, they seem to come at just the right points in the album so that, not only are they a nice change of direction, but also they effortlessly fit in.

Stand-out songs are 'you do something to me', 'broken stones', 'the changing man', 'I walk on gilded splinters' and of course the title track. To truly appreciate this fine album start at the beginning and just let it play on to the end. It far outweighs the sum of its parts, and as these parts are so good, you're in for a great journey.

5 out of 5 stars My Ever Changing Moods.......2004-02-07

I will never forget the time when I first heard the Jam. I was about 12, 1981, and I was down in my neighbors basement in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was one of seven catholic kids, and he somehow ended up with a copy of In The City. It was the coolest thing I'd ever heard. It wasn't long before we were spray painting a piece of styrofoam in the same manner as the front of the album. Weller has been a huge part of my music heritage ever since.

Stanley Road finds Weller at the peak of his "3rd" life. To me, it's his defining moment as an artist. Weller hits the perfect notes with his 3rd solo album, an album filled with just enough artistic personal statements to sketch a portrait as rich as any singer-songwriter that I'm aware of. Porcelain Gods? Changingman? Pink on White Walls? In the Distance? Street With No Name? All classic, defining Weller moments. Who is Weller? Listen to Stanley Road. ala " I know I come from Woking & you say I'm a fraud, but my heart is in the city, where it belongs".

I was lucky enough to have this album as a companion on a rail trip through Europe when it first came out. Everytime I hear it, it reminds me of the hills in Italy and nights on the balcony overlooking the Amalfi coast. This album has the same rare capacity Weller's 1st album, In the City, had, that is, to define a time and a place. Pink on White Walls? How else to you explain the buildings in Italy?

"Don't waste your time, don't hesitate, life is but a moment you can't wait, Go and have your fun, go and lose your mind, but can you get back to the ones you left behind?"

Good Question!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent echoes of Traffic, Free, Clapton ..........2001-03-08

I have to confess that this is the only Paul Weller album I own. Frankly I loathed the Jam like I loathed every band that I assumed was part of the punk movement that set serious, well-played rock music back 20 years. I never liked Paul Weller's persona.

But this album is utterly magnificent, recalling much that was great about 60s/70s RnB music. It would seem that before writing this album, Paul Weller thoroughly absorbed the entire Traffic portfolio. Take the achingly beautiful 'You Do Something to Me': the piano chord sequence is very, very similar to 'Crossing the Line' on Winwood/Yamashta's wonderful GO album of 1976. Weller's vocals veer between Winwood's own soulful style and the gruffer technique of Capaldi or even Eric Clapton.

The stand-out track for me is 'I Walk on Gilded Splinters' -- I just love the way the whole song disintegrates three-quarters of the way through, and then guitars start appearing from different locations in the stereo mix, while the wonderfully recorded drums come from a different direction. Strangely reminiscent of Jan Akkerman in one of Focus's very rare heavy moments. (By the way, Oasis's Noel Gallagher plays acoustic guitar just on this track, and his contribution is frankly negligible.)

This album is incredibly highly rated by British listeners. US readers may be unaware that this album was judged No. 66 in the All-Time Top 1000 albums survey of 1998 -- sandwiched in between SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE at No. 65 and THE DOORS at No. 67. That may be too high a mark-up, but this is an outstanding album nonetheless. It is a sheer pleasure to be forced to retract a previous negative view of an artist. This won't the only Weller album I own for long!

5 out of 5 stars stanley road.......2000-06-27

I had written Paul Weller off after subpar outings with the Style Council. After the urging of a friend, he persuaded me to pick up this title. After listening to this, I realized Paul Weller going back to his roots with The Jam. Although it is much more mature than his old school days, I enjoyed this outing very much. His writing style has come back with some middle aged anger which made me very pleased. Fans will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect answer?.......2000-02-15

Weller had such a big act to follow when Stanley Rd was due for release, Wild Wood had signalled a return to power for the 'Mod Father' and in the height of the Uk Britpop boom it would take an album of quality to get noticed. This album was the perfect answer, combining the raw power of tracks such as The Changingman and the title track Stanley Road with the heart string pulling Broken Stones and You Do Something, which I have no doubt is one of the best love songs ever written. This album is an emotional journey, combining starting with fierce anger as The Changingman "lights a bitter fuse" which signals this musical explosion. The reurn of fire at the UK music press, who seemed unable to cope with Weller's changing moods, comes in Porcelein Gods as Weller protests "more advice to fill up you head, more empty words, from the living dead." But there is another all more peaceful, thankfully, and thoughtful side to this album. Carleen Anderson's voice on Wings of Speed leaves the listener enchanted, while Weller brings tears to the eyes as he pleads "You do something to me..." This thought is echoed in Time Passes... and Broken Stones.

This Album is darker and deeper than Wild Wood and this may not suit the tastes of the Weller fans out there, but this album has in it's time so far become a essential part of any record collection and will inevitably become, to steal a more recent promotional phrase, a modern classic.

His music and lyrics were fantastic and it is well worth owning because he sounds great.

4 out of 5 stars Paul Rocks out in 1978.......2007-05-31

Great record. Obviously the often heard complaints are when Paul gets mushy... "Hold Me, Touch Me." But that is really a well written tune - it's just a stretch for Kiss fans. I think "Move On" and "It's Alright" are the best offerings here. But I love "Goodbye" and "Tonite You Belong to Me". Many of these tunes could have been on any Kiss group record in the 70's. I really like this record, but not as much as Ace's. Still, the differences only make this solo project all the more cool. And like Ace's record, Paul's still sounds relevant today.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Stanley IS Kiss.......2006-12-16

This album alone proves that much of Kiss' driving force, aside from Simmons' signature Kiss classics (and the tongue), comes from Stanley. His powerful, soulful voice and his memorable riffs have long been Kiss' staple, and his devotion to the craft have made him Kiss' long-standing frontman. Every track on this solo album is exellent and full of full-fledged rock. The ballad "Hold Me, Touch Me", a minor hit in 1978, also shows his depth, and the opening track, "Tonight You Belong to Me", shows his creativity and uniqueness when it comes to structure. Altogether, this is the best of the solo albums and one of the better Kiss albums.

4 out of 5 stars 4.2 Best of the Solos.......2006-11-10

This is the best of the 4. Great songs, good sound and pretty heavy (as far as Kiss goes) at times. Tonight You Belong To Me rules! One of my favorite Kiss songs ever! (even though its not a Kiss song). Goodbye, Wouldnt you Like..., Its Alright, Together as one... are high quality songs. Just really cool and have stood the test of time. Even sounds fresh today. Of course you get the typical ballad (Hold me, touch me), but it is a great cd and the best of the solos. And yes, that includes Aces...
In fact this cd was much, much better than Pauls 2006 outing as well.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of the Solo Albums.......2006-05-19

Many will strongly disagree, but in my opinion, Paul's is the best of the four KISS solo albums. It isn't the most KISS-like, which is often touted (none of them sound like KISS), but it has the best songs and album fluidity of the four.

1. Tonight You Belong To Me-5/5. Everyone is pretty much in agreeance that this is the best song on the album. This song best represents who Paul is. The music is mid-tempoed and a bit heavy, but the lyrics and vocals are phenomenal.
2. Move On-4/5. This is an upbeat rocker. The lyrics are a little goofy, but it is extremely catchy and sticks in your head. Good vocals.
3. Ain't Quite Right-5/5. A slow soft song with a perfect vocal delivery. One of the absolute best on here.
4. Wouldn't You Like To Know Me-4/5. Another heavy, upbeat rocker. Great music, lyrics and vocals.
5. Take Me Away (Together As One)-5/5. Similar to "Tonight.." Soft in the beginning, but getting heavier. Excellent lyrics and a perfect vocal delivery. Superb.
6. It's Alright-5/5. The best of the straight up rockers. One of Paul's most aggressive songs ever. The vocals are unbelievable. One of the best on here.
7. Hold Me Touch Me (Think of Me When We're Apart)-5/5. A beautiful piano ballad. The vocals are wonderful and the lyrics are beautiful. One of my favorites.
8. Love In Chains-4/5. Another aggressive rocker. A stark contrast to the song that precedes it. Typical KISS type lyrics. Great vocals.
9. Goodbye-3/5. Probably the weakest song on here. The music is just okay, with an odd sounding bass line that distracts me. The vocals are the only saving grace, but its not too bad.

This one is highly recommended for KISS fans, but those not familiar with it must understand that all of the solo albums are a great departure from the Klassic KISS sound. Anyone who likes 1970's hard rock or heavy metal is likely to appreciate this.

Listen to the samples, these are poorly reproduced copies. Electronic music especially is extremely hard to reproduce exact "voices" for the notes.

5 out of 5 stars "Dr. Strangelove, The Shining & Spartacus ~ Kubrick".......2005-03-11

One can only thank Silva Screen for releasing a Tribute album "2001: Music from the Films of Stanley Kubrick", featuring just a handful of films and scores from writer/director Stanley Kubrick......but what an impact they have made on audiences everywhere over the years...his shoes are not easy to fill in the world of film making.

Did I mention Peter Sellers manifesting his talent enough for three roles, which included a U.S. President in "DR. STRANGELOVE, OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING ABOUT AND LOVE THE BOMB"(1964), besides Sellers we have Sterling Hayden(crazed General) and George C. Scott(gum chewing insanity), but Slim Pickens steals the show with his wild ride on the "bomb"..."THE KILLING" (1956), "PATHS OF GLORY" (1957) and "SPARTACUS" (1960), an original true story of a gladitor(Kirk Douglas) who leads other slaves into rebellion against a powerful Rome in 73 B.C...actor and executive producer Douglas was magnificent in the film, with brilliant Kubrick directing...outstanding score by Alex North..."LOLITA" (1962), "2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY" (1968), "A CLOCKWORK ORANGE" (1971), master film maker Kubrick pulled out all the stops on this one, Malcolm McDowell(sadistic punk is funny fierce psychopath) a cult following with memorable scenes..."BARRY LYNDON" (1975), adventures of an Irish gambler whose transition from innocence into the pit of aristocracy in the 18th Century...Ryan O'Neal stars, never better in a role..."THE SHINING" (1980), we know Jack Nicholson can go off the deep end, but in this film(he's completely off the charts), can think of no other actor that can pull this off..."FULL METAL JACKET" (1987)...quite a line up from one of the industries leaders in film making, and the scores that pulled them off.

Hats off to The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mark Ayres...Crouch End Festival Chorus, conducted by Bateman...James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer)...and the many soloist Tomas Lerst on fiddle, Vaclay Skyora on tin whistle, Zbynka Solcova on celtic harp, Gareth Williams on harpsichord and Jaraslava Eliasova on piano...and a big thank you to Silva Screen for keeping all of us "film-score-buffs" in a happy mood...gotta love it!

In perspective these are some of the most popular songs of their time. I enjoy the historical value of songs from the past. Hearing someone sing about things you may have only learned from a history book, makes it more real.

This re-release of Saltimbanco is just what the doctor ordered! With some new arrangements, and two completely new tracks, this re-release fulfils the wants of all of the die-hard fans of Cirque Du Soleil. Adagio has beautiful parts that were severely missed on the first release of the album, and Cantus-Melopee is a nice new track. Now the CD has almost all of the music from the show! Nice job!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lush Special Edition of Weller Classic.......2005-06-27

"Stanley Road" remains Weller's biggest selling record to date. It's easy to see why with tracks like lead off single "The Changingman", "Out of the Sinking", "I Walk on Guided Splinters" and the soul classic "You Do Something To Me". On top of the original album there are all the singles B-sides including Beatles cover "Sexy Sadie" which had it appeared on last years cover album "Studio 150" it would have been the album's best song. Weller was never one to slack when it came to his B-Sides which here is obvious. "It's A New Day Baby" and "A year Later" are acoustic tracks which would have sounded at home on his best album "Wild Wood". There is also a second disc filed with alternate takes and demos from the "Stanley Road" sessions, all of which make compelling listening.

The DVD is a welcome addition to the package. The half hour documentary is an entertaining overview of the recording sessions with new interviews from Weller and members of his band at the time. Noel Gallagher also turns up, as ever providing good value for money. Through in a new booklet and it rounds off an impressive package of what was one of Britpop's defining albums.
