Some Girls [Limited Edition] [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
A fresh, uncompromising attempt to incorporate 1978 pop techniques into the band's familiar sound, Some Girls opens with the disco sass of "Miss You" and closes with the self-destructive punk of "Shattered." (Both songs, especially "Miss You," with its distinctive Mel Collins sax solo, remain live showstoppers.) So the Stones declared credibility in the dance circuit without sacrificing their hard-rock reputation. Though the anti-love "Beast of Burden" and the stylishly slow "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" continue to rack up the most airplay, the obscurities stand up surprisingly well. Worth replaying: Keith Richards's rickety rocker "Before They Make Me Run." --Steve Knopper --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Few rock stars have played in the intersection of real life, image, and fans' imaginations as smartly (and comically) as Mick Jagger does on Some Girls. With the Stones again running at top pace, Jagger aims his gimlet eye at his and the boys' gossip-column lives (the Chuck Berryish "Respectable," the archly blues-wailing title track), his collapsing marriage (where was Bianca when Mick's pals were trying to hook him up with the "Puerto Rican girls who're just dyin' to meetchoo?)... read more --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
Rock N Roll ! .......2007-07-12
Some Girls, is one of the greatest Rock n roll cds. The Stones rock the late 70s with some of their best guitar. Lies, Some Girls, Respectable and When The Whip Comes Down are all great Rock n roll. Far Away Eyes is the only country its lighter than the great stones country. Miss You is a great song great sax solo from Mel Collins and Hamonica from Sugar Blue. Some Girls is one of the stones Five best a great guitar based Rock n Roll cd from The Rolling Stones.
(4.5 stars) TOP OF THE LINE ROLLING STONES ! (could have been their best with a little more effort) .......2007-04-24
Some Girls (1978) is a very good album on the strength of the funky Miss You, the rocking When the Whip Comes Down, Keith Richards' Before They Make Me Run, punk influenced Shattered, tougue-in-cheek country Far Away Eyes, the semi-soul ballad Beast of Burden, the respectable Respectable, and the tell-it-like-it-is attitude of Some Girls. All Rolling Stones classics, every one of them as good as any other Rolling Stones classic. Just My Imagination and Lies are just so bad they almost ruin the whole thing, and sort of block the flow of this otherwise great album. Whose idea was it cover this Temptations classic, anyway? This sounds like the band was warming up or doing a sound check, recorded it, and put it on the album. Lies is it's twin. If they had replaced those two with songs that matched the quality of the others, this could have been the best album the Rolling Stones had ever recorded. As it is, I rate it a solid 4.5 stars, and recommend it, because it has some of The Stones' best songs.
the last great stones album........2007-03-30
1978. the last great stones album. i happen to think (unlike many others) that they've done some very good stuff since then, but this is definitely the end of the line for greatness in their discography. "just my imagination," "repectable," "before they make me run," which is about as good a thing as keith richards ever did, and "beast of burden" are all classics. mick jagger's voice is brimming with personality here (instead of falling into a caricature of himself, which sometimes has happened in these later years). keith and ron wood splatter the recording with great guitar licks. and every song is strong to great. a wonderful piece of rock and roll. come back, boys. dylan did it. you can too. i know that you can.
Some Girls.......2007-01-10
This has always been one of my favorite Stones LP's, and recently purchased it in CD form. Still love it!

Almost able to complete your collection . . . . almost........2006-05-24
I remember when I first saw this album in the "New Release" section of the "Alternative" aisle at my local record store (which was over 10 years ago, by the way). I about flipped my wig because I thought the Sisters had . . . finally . . . followed up "Vision Thing" with a surprise new release! Well, I was still pleasantly surprised to see that it was merely a collection of their early singles and EPs, but I was admittedly a bit let down that it wasn't a shiny new release. Still, "Some Girls Wander By Mistake" is ESSENTIAL for your Sisters collection.
Prior to this very inclusive collection, the only format many of the Sisters' early releases were available on was vinyl. This certainly wasn't a problem for me as I had a rather nice Thorens turntable at the time. The problem was, however, that these early singles and EPs were quite hard to find---not impossible---just a bit hard to track down. For those who didn't have a turntable, or didn't want the hassle of one, simply had to live without such stellar songs as "Alice," "1969," or "Gimme Shelter." The release of "Some Girls Wander by Mistake" changed all of that . . . well, almost. But I'll get to that later. Okay, so what DO you get with this CD? Well, I'll give you the list:
1. 1980's "The Damage Done" 3-track single.
2. 1982's "Body Electric/Adrenochrome" single.
3. 1983's "Anaconda/Phantom" single.
4. 1983's "Alice" 4-track single (more like an EP).
5. 1983's "The Reptile House E.P." with 6 tracks.
6. 1983's "Temple of Love" 3-track single.
This is, as you can easily tell, quite an extensive collection. Now, on one convenient CD, you can own what would likely have set you back between $50 to $100 (or maybe even more) from searching out all of these original songs on vinyl.
Will this complete your Sisters collection? Nope! For God only knows what reason, the wonderful 1984 single, "Body and Soul," is completely missing. Also found on this single was the phenomenal "Afterhours," which could easily rival Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead" as the ultimate Goth anthem. Of course, none of the "other" songs (B-sides) included on the singles from the Sisters' three studio albums are found here either. We all remember such classics from "The First and Last and Always" as "Walk Away" and "No Time to Cry" don't we? If you just so happen to own these singles, then you also can partake of such aural delights as "On the Wire," "Poison Door," "Blood Money," and "Bury Me Deep." If not, too bad for you because they are not on the album. And guess what--- these B-sides are as good as the singles!!!
So what is a poor Sisters of Mercy fan to do? Why, buy a bootleg of course! True, you can continue to hunt down ALL of the vinyl and CD singles from all three albums but you will pay a king's ransom . . . believe me. I just spent almost $40 for the "Dominion" CD single on Ebay. Then I discovered a clever little bootleg out there aptly named "Some Boys Wander by Mistake." Owning this will indeed supply you with everything that "Some Girls Wander by Mistake" left off, including extended versions of some of the better-known singles. I found my CD copy on Ebay and it set me back about $30. The sound quality is pretty good, but I do hear a few crackles and pops on some tracks so it's very obvious that it was recorded directly from the vinyl singles. As I said though, it is a bootleg so ignore the "official" appearance of this CD.
In the meantime, buy "Some Girls Wander by Mistake" until you can track down the elusive bootleg I mentioned, or begin your expensive quest of finding all of the Sisters CD singles.

Some Girls Wander By Mistake ~ Sisters of Mercy.......2005-04-22
I distinctly remember listening to this cd in a store in Gothenburg in the summer of 1992.I had just turned 18 a month or so ago and I thouhgt it was astounding. I had never heard anything like it. So untamed and out of control and very cutting edge and different. Even though I do not dress like that anymore and my palate has grown considerably I still consider it to be a grand album with amazing tracks such as the extended temple of love, heartland and 1969. The book-let is great with all the images of the the singles and eps. The story written by Eldritch is hillarious and inteligent at the same time. This is a very well done compilation from the very intriguing mind of a certain Andrew Eldritch.
Great, but different..........2005-04-18
First thing's first. I'm writing this review for SoM fans that are familiar with the standard SoM fare (FALAA, Floodland, VT), but not with these earlier recordings. So, before you buy this, you have been warned: this album is nothing like the others.
It's a great album, but very different. The songs here were written before Eldritch's infamous breakup with his only love. This breakup dramatically influenced FALAA, Floodland, and VT to a lesser degree. You won't find any of his trademark scathing insights here. What you will find, basically, is mood music. And I don't mean that in a bad way. As Eldritch himself says of the music in the accompanying booklet, their shows were a place where you could find, or more likely lose, yourself.
Absent in this album are the biting observations on love and the general state of the world. In fact, these songs sound more like they were taken from a journal of random musings rather than written with any particular message in mind (which is almost always the case with the later songs). But it should be said that all SoM albums are very different from one another.
Even still, in my opinion, there are more danceable songs here (if it interests you) than on any other album. The highlights in that respect are Alice, Floorshow, Temple of Love (although I still prefer the Ofra Haza version), and Heartland.
I think the songs that really shine on this album are Alice, Floorshow, Lights, Valentine, ToL, Heartland, and Body Electric. The album is worth it for those alone. However, you're also getting their first attempt at music (The Damage Done), the very amusing (to me, anyhow) Kiss the Carpet (which is about exactly what you might assume), a great cover of the Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter, all the original album art for these songs (in the insert), and a brief bit from Eldritch on the origin of the band and these songs.
This album is worth every penny, but I would say it will appeal more to veteran SoM fans.
Horrible Gothic of the early 80's.......2004-11-01
This album isn't that bad. It has a few goods meaningful songs like Heart Land, Alice, 1969, and Phantom. Floodland is probably the best you can get with Gothic music. This album serves as a stepping stone to one of the greastest gothic bands ever. Stick with floodland. And even try out the Mission UK. For ambient check out Controlled Bleeding. I hope this review is helpful.

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.
Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10
Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Clearly J.H. Enjoys An Ensemble.......2006-09-30
Her collaborations take the pressure off, I think. She loosens up and does what she does best. Don't get me wrong, her solo work is mind-blowing. I simply think she's more comfortable surrounded by other talented artists. Love and Gluck really round out her talent. These ladies are a testament to hard work and good old fashioned rock-n-roll. A solid performance.
Sophomore Slump.......2006-08-20
The 1st Some Girls' album was very good. This one not so much.
CD is great, the dvd is a fan only purchase........2006-08-14
This collection of songs from the Some Girls is great. All well crafted and lovely.
The DVD however is something that only true fans will enjoy.
More great music from Juliana!.......2006-07-20
This is a great CD/DVD package that illustrates yet again that JH is the most talented and tasteful rocker out there. (A deliberately raw and sloppy mini-DVD of jams and performance clips from the "Feel It" tour is included and hints at what a full-length JH DVD would be like.)
"Hooray for LA" is one big hook, largely because of the bass line. The lyrics reference "music in the bars that makes the floors shake" and you'll want to crank this one up until it makes your own floors shake.
"Social Control" is hilarious!
The Girls are back!.......2006-07-17
Refreshing and full of dry humor, Crushing Love has taken over the CD player in my car and won't be coming out soon. Juliana is at the top of her game, with scorching, distorted leads and thoughtful lyrics. Gluck and Love round out the trio with sweet harmonies and solid work on bass and drums. There's a spare quality to the overall composition that leads you to another listen, with pleasant results. These guys like each other, enjoy creating their music and have produced something worth your time and hard-earned bucks. No artificial colors or flavors.
The included video is edited in a way that conveys what they like about performing and captures exactly what I like about them.

A Great Comeback Album.......2006-11-15
Comeback album? Yeah, after Exile on Main St. in '72 the Stones put out three sub-par albums in a row; Goat's Head Soup, It's Only Rock and Roll, and Black and Blue. While those albums had memorable tracks, the fans (and critics) had to wonder if the stones were capable of a solid release again. Some Girls took care of any doubts. There's no denying the punk influence on this record. Songs like Lies, When the Whip Comes Down, and Shattered are raw, gritty, with harsh lyrics to boot. While not sounding punk, the Stones used the punk "attitude" to their advantage. There really isn't a dud on this record. I find all the tracks listenable, from the disco influenced Miss You to the country mockery Far Away Eyes. Still, my favorite will always be the soulful Beast Of Burden, especially Mick's rant in the middle; "Am I rough enough, am I tough enough, am I rich enough, in love enough"? As a Stones fan (and critic, at times), this is one album I feel is a must have.
One Mighty Fine Rock and Roll Record.......2006-06-11
"Some Girls" is a solid rocker by the Stones, which came out in a time when too many people were paying attention to disco and punk. I don't know, is it just me, or is there -- John Travolta and the Sex Pistols not withstanding -- just no social redeeming value in those kinds of music. Give me country, gospel, reggae, blues, jazz and R & B and you can stuff all the Rock and Roll you can find down my throat, but please Lord, no disco, no punk. I can well imagine the song "Some Girls," irritated some folk, thank goodness for political incorrectness. "Beast of Burden" is simply a glorious song, as are "Shattered," "Miss You" and "When the Whip Comes Down." This is another one of those Rolling Stones' record where every song is a winner. Maybe that's because this is the first record where Ron Wood is an official member of the band. His guitar playing throughout is superb. Mick Jagger plays guitar on some of the songs as well, and of course we've got Keith here as well. Just listen to the three of them playing their hard driving guitars on the stand-up, get up and dance song, "Respectable." All in all, this is one gosh danged, mighty fine Rock and Roll record.
Powerful and varied.......2006-03-22
This 1978 release from The Stones offers an impressive variety of styles, from their take on disco in the sublime Miss You to the humorous country of Far Away Eyes to the rock balladry of Beast Of Burden. Not many Stones albums offer such a variety of musical styles.
The rock tracks are tough and uncompromising, like the decadent When The Whip Comes Down, the acidic title track and the anthemic Before They Make Me Run. They also do a brilliant cover of the Temptations' classic Just My Imagination, giving it a much rawer soul sound.
It is clear that this album was a response to Punk and Disco, the two styles prevalent from the mid 1970s to the end of that decade. Without a doubt the Stones pulled it off very well as the aforementioned Miss You was a huge hit and has stood the test of time very well: it's mid-tempo dance track with subdued vocals, lovely ooh-ooh choruses and a genuine nightlife feel.
The country song Far Away Eyes is equally mesmerising, as Mick sings in a real country accent about a truck driver on the way to visit his girlfriend while listening to a gospel station. Although it's a parody, I find it very charming and very "genuine" in another sense. It was the flipside of Miss You and probably contributed to this seven single reaching Number One.
The songs are uniformly good with great tunes and plenty of attitude. Some Girls may not be considered as one of their top 5 classics of all time but I find myself returning to it again and again. Some Girls is a solid body of work with many highlights.

A nice enough record, but...........2005-07-26
Juliana Hatfield began her solo career with an album of jangly indie-pop music, 1992's "Hey Babe". As time passed, her sound developed more of an edge, more arrangements, and more density, really culminating with the release of a pair of albums in 2000, the introverted and delicate "Beautiful Creature" and the aggressive and direct "Total System Failure".
After a couple studio sessions and assembling a "best of" album (which, oddly enough, was largely unreleased material), Hatfield returned, this time with a band featuring Heidi Gluck of the Pieces on bass and Freda Love, her old bandmate in the Blake Babies, on drums.
The album represents a return to the jangly pop of "Hey Babe", and is almost a logical successor to that, but adds both a maturity and a depth borne of confidence, particularly in the vocals. The arrangements are significantly thinner, adding an openness that's been missing from Hatfield's music. And the music is catchy, to say the least], recalling the Velvet Underground's "Loaded" in many senses.
Standouts cover a lot of moods-- from jangly pop ("Feel It", "The Prettiest Girl") to electric pop (standout "Necessito") to countryish acoustic pieces ("You Don't Know", also featuring a fantastic feedback-driven solo from Hatfield) to a blast of a cover of old blues singer Robert Johnson's "Malted Milk".
But in the end, while its a lot of fun, its a bit too pop, a bit too sparse, a bit too polite. It's a good record, but its lacking in something.
lacks a little something.......2005-06-10
I am a huge Juliana Hatfield fan, and have been for nearly 10 years. However, this album dissapoints me a little. The three girls are so talented, and I was expecting so much more from this...but it really lacks, IMO.
There just is hardly any energy here...especially from old Jules. I want the Juliana that sings from her gut. I want the Juliana that rips a good solo. But in this CD, there's just no emotion...it sounds so programmed.
Now, this is in no way a diss to any of these ladies...I love all three of them. BUt I just expected more from a trio of rockin' ladies of this quality.
Still, there are some very enjoyable tracks on here. Feel It and Neccesito stick out, IMO.
This albums to me needs a little more energy, a little more polish, and then it would be fantastic. I know these three can do better.
Still, I give it 3 stars because the tracks are catchy enough, and it is a fun album. I just think these three could do better.
always rockin'.......2005-04-06
juliana hatfield has been my favorite artist since i was in a training bra. she's not sold out once... it's not in her character. she's carried five bands to stardom just in time to carry on elsewhere modestly. talentless bimbettes?? me and the donnas were probably all sitting in our rooms idolizing juliana at the same time... in our training bras. this album was, as always, rockin'. it's as if they sold their souls to the devil to rock so well:0)
Great album.......2004-10-10
Another great album by Juliana Hatfield, this time with old Blake Babies hand Freda Love Smith and a new addition in Heidi Gluck. Every track on this album is listenable and sounds great.
As for the 'talentless bimbettes' comment, Juliana Hatfield was ripping up the alternative music world while the Donnas were still in elementary school (back when the term "alternative music" actually meant something). She has more rock cred in her toenail than those pretenders could ever aspire to.
Sneakers and Tube Tops...Donuts and Beer..........2004-06-29
Maybe that's a stupid way of saying it, but as a Juliana Hatfield/Blake Babies fan, I feel that "Feel It" is a nice transitional album for these 3 talented ladies. Some Girls is a great detour and a handy cd to have in your collection, if you are a fan of Hatfield or Freda Boner, or any of their respective bands. Tracks that really stand out are "Prettiest Girl","Malted Milk" and "The Getaway," which I recently heard while shopping in the GAP. Other songs like "Robot City" and"On My Back" become a bit lost in repetition. In all, buy this record for the soundtrack of a Sunday drive or an afternoon picnic. It will perk up the blues in your dreary day.

Heres To New Beginnings.......2006-10-12
After hearing Heaven's Pregnant Teens, I quickly went out and picked up thsi album. And I was dizzyed after the first two songs; as my mind and musical ear cannot seem to slightly categorize this outfit. But in terms of attitude and aggression, this is punk. And it is a better punk record then most "punk" these days claims to be. The album smothers your senses with inaudible, slightly intoxicating cacaphonic wretching and intricately brutal instrumentation that leaves blood trails in it's wake. What plays off as simple but scary blastbeats, actually comes off as a new interpretation for punk rock. The lyrics are some of the best, and offensive things ever put to paper. Some Girls are obviously going for the agenda of simply bashing your skull and earholes with unhinged musical chaos. Otherwise, they come off with it at a smashing pace, and I truly enjoyed this album for it's originality and seperation from most of the aggressive music out today. Also, a terrific art layout by Converge frontman and extrodinare J. Bannon.
A tool, an occurance, or perhaps a social chess move, but not a musical album in the conventional sense........2006-10-05
When I listen to a group like Some Girls, The Locust, Curse of the Golden Vampire, or even to a slightly lesser degree, Converge or Give Up The Ghost, part of my enjoyment is the gratification of feeling exclusive. Maybe that's about as cool to say as "album art matters," but both of these statements are sorely true, and proven through this release. This music is an antisocial treatment not just for you ears, but for your whole social environment, and it easily has a numbing effect on the listener. If it's in your headphones then you should feel pleasantly juxtaposed to just about any surrounding short of the Gaza Strip. If it's in your vehicle then chances are you probably have the windows rolled all the way down and the look on your face is completly stoic as fellow drivers neglect to pull all the way up beside you at the stoplight. If you are listening to this while selling music in a record store (yeah, it's still called a record store, don't worry) then it's most likely poorly managed or only sells indie stuff (in both cases we are talking about a dirt hole of a store). There is little point in analyzing the best songs, rifts, or the technique of the musicians. If they don't care then why do you?
I was initially drawn to this work through the a mixture of it being on Deathwish Inc. and the strange slant shown through it's ad campaign: wrapped in a lipstick-esque pearly rougue cardboard dustcover with the letters "SG" cutout to peek through at a modern graphic emulating a stencil-ish collage seemingly representing either a protest, a punk crowd, or an all out riot. In the world of great Jake-Bannon-endorsed merch, the juxtapostion of this cover to the subsequent sound beneath is most masterful indeed.
Some Girls have a very bad attitude. This music is snaling and stand-offish in a way that should make Avril Lavine spontaneously compust for ever using the word "punk" in her bios in any shape form or fashion. Seriously, this music makes Sid Vicious look like little more than a heroin addict.
What's most facinating however, is the execution, having seemingly merged a glossy/shimmery production asthetic with a genre of music which has seldom to never been this well produced, without draining the work of it's intensity. Give up the Ghost tried to do this on "We're Down Till We're Underground" but it came off as being very pre-meditated. No, that is not what we see with "All My Friends Are Going Death." Instead we witness what appears to be uncalculated killing, from very calculated minds. It's like comparing two mass murders, because it's as if SG set foot out of the house with a careful checklist of weapons and absolutly no regard for who might suffer at their hands. The irony, for me, is that the lyrical subject matter is not that far from "We're Down Till We're Underground," unless you pick up on the vibe of how both albums might be less about relationship woes with the opposite sex, and more about their disgust with loosing respect for many musicians they once admired.
Some Girls have reaffirmed that there is something left which can most trully be considered undilluted tear-your-face-off hardcore punk--bursting with an almost masochistic sense of untamed manic fury. This is not a supergroup which borrows from each band members former group, but rather a terroristic assault on the fact that any of those bands ever called themselves hardcore. "Destroy, Erase, Rebuild."
Great Bands join together.......2006-05-12
Since I can't define Some Girl's sound to a single genre, it would be better to describe their sound based on what bands the members come from. From the legendary synth-grind act known as The Locust comes one of the more prominent members, Justin Pearson, along with additional members from bands like Give Up The Ghost and American Nightmare. There's a lot of influence and skill involved in the band. It's a surprise that they can get together and make music like this, despite their differences and busy schedules. But alas, Some Girls creates a genious equation that seems to stun even the most seasoned listeners of aggressive music.
Most of the songs here are similiar in nature. The traditional grind/hardcore drumming patterns and occasional blast beats. The guitars range in style. Some songs have more traditional San Diego scene guitar elements, while others seem to take off in their own direction. However, the vocals are where this band really shines. Wes Eisbold gives ranting hardcore screams accompanied by the shreiking Justin Pearson. This combination never gets old. Just when you think you've figured out the pattern, one of them comes up with a different way of screaming the words just right so they change in appearance.
What can I really say more? This band shreds. If you like any of the bands these guys come from, I would highly recommend you pick this up. For that matter, all fans of aggresive music should check this out. It's that good.
Juliana Hatfield?.......2005-10-27
Honestly now with a cover like that and song titles like "some girls have all the F**k" how could you confuse the two? Anyways, Wes certaintly has a talent for picking bands that have the same name as another band... anyways, this is not as good as American Nightmare/Nothing/Give Up the Ghost, I was expecting it to be a step up at least, but alas no. Anyways, it's alright, it just isn't very interesting, his voice just doesn't fit speed rock and it just isn't heavy enough to be grind so it just kinda falls in the "blah" catergory. To be honest with you, AN is prolly the only reason why I bought this cd (oh your so lame dude!) so what though! It just isn't that good. Plus I read some interview w/Wes and he's all talking bullcrap about how bands like Daughters (and his band I'm SO sure) are the only bands doing anything orginal in hardcore. Haw! Hardcore gave you everything you had Wes, don't be a jack ass about it! And Daughters suck ass anyways! I don't know how American NIghtmare was all that diffrent than any other garden variety hardcore band (they were just really good) so why are ya knocking it? You'd still be bagging groceries for hells sake! Despite his little "gripe" I still like the man, he writes great lyrics (honestly he is really good at writing lyrics) and that's probably all I really like about this record (esp. the lyrics to that song about the "modest" little ship, I have it on lp and the lyrics are etched onto the b-side so they are kinda hard to read, real nice even though I have lollipop green which is just an awful color for vinyl). So in closing man, I really like AN a lot, hell I paid 30 bucks for a used t-shirt off of ebay man, I ain't kidding, but this just doesn't got it with or without the superstar pedigree of this collective.
Why weren't this Juliana Haterfield?.......2005-04-18
Just kidding. I really do like Juliana Hatfield though. This is not my favorite Justin Pearson band, but it's still pretty good. It's got more of a straight up hard-core vibe and less weirdo-laden content. My friends give it static because this band is now on Epitaph...but I don't really care about that. Alot of really solid bands are on Epitaph. The songs and riffs are tight, but it just seems to be missing something. Still, if you like holy molar/locust/crimson curse/swing kids/justin pearson....pick this one up.

Album Description
Some Girls is a five-person assault out of the sleepy Navy town of San Diego, comprised of the creme de la crass of musicians from that city's famed hardcore/punk underground. Fronted by Give Up The Ghost and American Nightmare's Wes Eisold, the band features a who's who of hardcore players from The Locust, Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower, Unbroken, Over My Dead Body, Swing Kids, and Crimson Curse. This is their first full-length; an unrelenting musical psychosis, adding new dimensions of brutality to Some Girls' now-trademark thrash attack. Includes a snarling cover of Public Image Ltd.'s post-punk classic, "Religion".
Customer Reviews:
Some Girls Really Are This Abrasive.......2006-09-28
Some Girls are a new and unique group comprised of band members who fill various other impressive outfits. No matter, this band makes it's voice ferociously clear. The music is comprised of an authentic mix up of hardcore braying guitar and bass over grating drumlines. Succumbing violently into unsettling screams. The album unfolds into a masterpiece of malicious musical catastrophe. I began to notice how very technical the music is, and sometimes even startling when it attempts breakdowns. But overall I was ashamed I doubted them, the song titles, the length. Note this band is not your average hardcore, this is simply the raw potency of it takeing a form of it's own. This album is the equivalent to getting brutally ambushed by the hottest red head you can think of, and as shes about to stomp your skull, she withdrawls and simply kisses your forehead then siles and walks off. It's clear to me though, Some Girls are focused heavily on pure shock value, this music is very coarse and unrelenting, I reccomend for anyone who hates crust and gutterpunk, but occasionally enjoys the speed and intensity it sports. Some Girls strike right above the hip of that, but they do it so well, they almost seem uncomparable.
Brilliant Album nonetheless buy it and worship it
Some Girls are geniuses, some girls are not........2006-09-04
I think the only reason I was intrigued by this record and decided to give it a spin was because I read repeatedly that there was no reason. Much like Liars' "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned," but for different reasons, many find both albums to be unlistenable. But Some Girls' second album is a far improvement from their first, "All My Friends Are Going Death," and pretty much put on display their utter disgust with everything from virgins to pinata's.
Grinding gears from top to bottom and clocking in at a whopping 24:23 (this is mathematically shorter than a sitcom when found on DVD) including a nine minute track. Some Girls strip their vocals and put their stamp on of the songs, and destroy the glass that has been broken over their heads. The Liars album is similar, and also chastised incorrectly on false reasoning. Oddly, the Liars and Some Girls are very similar, buton pushing and barrier breaking. But I still like the reviews better that chastise.
Ape, Ape, Ape, APE.......2006-02-13
The Epitaph debut from the group some girls, featuring members of the Locust, Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, and Unbroken, is full of chaotic music and strange time signature changes all in the mere time of 25 minutes, and that's including the 9 minute closer "Deathface". That comes to a downfall, yes they're a grindband, but from a grindband you expect more than 13 songs at least 21 or up for maximum.
Another weakness is the monotonous guitar riffs, they all have the same sound in every song, but they just play them differently, but after awhile, you do begin to want a different sound to strum off.
The positive thing is the way the album melds together, it's catchy and heavy and a quick listen so you really never get bored with it, even though I said the guitar was repetitive, it was never boring. Another strongpoint are the satyrical looks on religion in their lyrics. They always have a intelligent look on religion but also construe (sp?) the lyrics to make them seem funny at the same time.
Favorite Tracks: "Beautiful Rune", "Hot Piss", "Totally Pregnant Teens", Marry Mortuary", "Retard and Feathered", "Deathface".
