Mediocre Best of Release.......2006-11-26
Now, if you are a huge Jimi fan - and I am - please read the review before clicking the "not helpful" button.
First of all, the digipak packaging for this release is by far the worst I have seen. The manufacturer's plastic pegs wear down (they don't break) and eventually the discs won't stay on the spindles. The plastic just "feels" really really cheap - like it was vacu-formed. The booklet is glued into the packaging so even if you want to change the CD box, you can't. Experience Hendrix should have looked at the digipaks that Impulse used for their John Coltrane remasters or those used by ABKO for the Rolling Stones remastes. I cannot stress enough just how lousy this packaging is, perhaps the worst I've seen in all my years collecting CDs. Even the paper in the booklet feels flimsy. It's clear that they put this package together on the cheap like a KTEL or Ronco release.
Disc one has a good selection though if this is truly a best of collection aimed at a new generation of buyers, I don't know why the track selection includes alternate takes rather than the masters of some of Hendrix's better works like All Along the Watchtower and Spanish Castle Magic. Now, that said, I find them interesting but there is a reason they are alternate takes. Jimi was a perfectionist in the studio and these alternate takes don't represent his best work. So again, for that new generation of buyers that this package claims to be aimed at, this seems wrong headed to me.
Disc two has a great selection of Jimi live; however, I can't for the life of me understand why they are not presented in chronological sequence the way the studio stuff is. My only guess is that when you hear the stuff from late spring and summer of 1970 it is very clear that Jimi was tired of the rock star thing. His singing is really pretty terrible in these later tunes. His playing, though pretty wild is also very noisy and sloppy. Maybe it's out of sequence in order to diminish the impact of these sub-par (with respect to Jimi's other live work) performances? I used to have an Lp when I was a young man called 'In the West" that seemed a far better representation of Jimi's live work. Actually, the photo on the cover for this set looks very similar and might even be the same photo from "In the West" To be quite honest, I have not found another Hendrix live release that is anywhere close to as satisfying as "Band of Gypsys", one of the great live recordings of that era.
If you are interested in Jimi, what you really want to do is buy the remastered CDs in this order:
1. Are You Experienced
2. Axis Bold as Love
3. Electric Ladyland
4. Band of Gypsys (always bugs me that the plural of Gypsy is spelled incorrectly on this release!)
5. First Rays of the New Rising Sun
6. Live at Fillmore East with the Band of Gypsys (outtakes from BOG)
7. South Saturn Delta.
8. Live at the BBC
Then move on to some of the other stuff like Jimi Plays Berkley and Live at the Fillmore.
Personally, I believe this 2 disc set is a dis-service to this remarkably gifted artist's legacy but I've been listening to Jimi since 1969 so maybe I'm just not getting the marketing angle.
A Breathtaking Collection From A Rock Legend.......2006-07-19
Jimi Hendrix.
What is left to say about this man? He's only widely considered to be the most creative and influential guitarists in rock and roll. His songs are among the most powerful songs in music, and every guitar player who came both before and after him still looks up to him in awe.
"Voodoo Child: The Jimi Hendrix Collection" is a two disc cd compiled by Rhino as well as Experience Hendrix, a production company run by Jimi's surving relatives that controls his entire recorded output.
The first disc of this collection contaisn all of Hendrix's most popular studio tracks (some in alternate versions), including the timeless "Purple Haze", the brooding "Hey Joe", the solemn "The Wind Cries Mary", the sweltering "Fire", his blazing cover of "All Along The Watchtower" and the passionate, ethereal "Angel". The sound quality is absolutely fantastic. This is Jimi the way he is meant to be heard.
The second disc is a 12 track collection of live performances. Though only a few songs are (or were back in 2001) previously unavailable, this disc gives perfect insight into the electrifying vibe present at a Hendrix concert. This disc includes his classic performance of The National Anthem at Woodstock. Once again, the sound quality is terrific.
The packaging is beautiful and includes insightful liner notes by Kurt Loder.
If you are just starting to experience the genius of Hendrix, this disc is the perfect palce to start your collection.
Are you experienced...?
Room to improve.......2005-12-13
This is a new type of greatest hits collection: it comes with all the hits to attract newbies to Hendrix, but unfortunately, it also includes unreleased material that Hendrix fans need. Unforunately, because the unreleased stuff could have fit in one CD, instead, we need to get yet another studio version of Purple Haze, Little Wing, etc., to get to the stuff we Hendrix fans are interested an pay for a double CD. The liner notes suck, why does Experience Hendrix has to pay people to tell the same Hendrix bio over and over again? Some of the highligts for Hendrix fans are the alternate versions of Stepping Stone and Izabella, and the live Fire, Foxey lady and Red House. A very strong compilation for anyone with interest in finding out whats the big deal about Hendrix, if this doesnt get you into Hendrix, nothing will.
sweet.......2005-09-27
to understand hendrix, you have to try to understand his fire, the inner turmoil, dissatisfaction with the heartskips life gives..and THAT can only be found in his blues.
the live "red house" on this record i have via alan douglas' "the jimi hendrix concerts." very special song it is, but sad when one realizes he really felt that stuff. althesame, don't try to be cool, be youl. and laugh.
The best compilation for the Hendrix freak.......2004-08-18
If you're reading this, no doubt you are looking for the best Hendrix album, whether to start out or "complete" your collection. I have seen several attempts to distill Jimi's musical legacy with varying degrees of success. This is the ONE, folks. Often with these compilations, something is ignored. Not this time. Hendrix's live work is featured quite well; The Star Spangled Banner was only the tip of the iceberg.
The studio disc has the usual standards (of course). A real treat, though, was the last tracks. I am very picky about my Hendrix records, and I don't want to get the same thing over again. But finding "hey baby/land of the rising sun", was interesting- very interesting. As I had not known it even existed in such a complete form, I had to get it.And the alternate takes of "spanish castle magic" and "all along the watchtower" didn't hurt either.
To sum up: new Hendrix fan: this is a good start. Old Hendrix fan: if you don't have this, what's taking you so long?
Now, if they could re-release the movie "Jimi Hendrix"...

Jimi at his best without the infinite guitar solos.......2007-03-19
All songs that have come to be Hendrix classics and show his skill without being self-serving on solos. Nice remake of "Hey Joe" (originally done by The Leaves") actually better than the original in my opinion. Has all the classics that used to be on rock radio in the '60's, but even though the arrangements aren't real fancy (bass, guitar and drums) they are good for the time. If you're a JH fan, this is a must-have.
Terrific Collection for the Budget-Minded.......2005-10-06
Jimi Hendrix's music is released solely through the Experience Hendrix label. In 2002 they remastered the 1969 SMASH HITS collection. This 2005 20th Century Masters Collection is the same album with only slightly different artwork. All three releases contain the same 12 songs ("Red House" and "Foxey Lady" ARE included). Are there better collections available? Certainly. But for ten bucks, you get some of Hendrix's classic songs. As far as budget releases go, this one is pretty hard to beat.
Why?.......2005-10-04
As far as I can tell, the only time one of these lame "Millennium" collections is needed, is when there are no collections for an artist. Guess what, Jimi has numerous hits albums out, and they're almost all better. Not to mention his original albums. Obviously these songs are classic, and the remastering is nice, but at only 10 tracks, there's easily another 10 missing? Please get the 20 track "Experience Hendrix", the old "Ultimate Experience", or his 2-disc best of before this. However, even a little Hendrix is better than none.
Just SMASH HITS reissued--nothing expanded.......2005-09-14
Don't understand why they couldn't have added more of his big songs on this reissue, since they've basically renamed it. This is a typical lazy effort in this whole 20th Century Masters-Best of-Millennium Collection series. And could it have more subtitles? Tracks:
1. purple haze (2:52)
2. fire (2:45)
3. the wind cries mary (3:21)
4. can you see me (2:33)
5. hey joe (3:30)
6. all along the watch tower (4:00)
7. stone free (3:36)
8. crosstown traffic (2:19)
9. manic depression (3:42)
10. remember (2:48)
11. red house (3:50)
12. foxy lady (3:19)

Customer Reviews:
Music like this is hard to come by.......2002-10-29
I don't normally write reviews for CD's. I usually stick to books, however, I have to make an exception for Cirque Du Soliel.
My dance teacher had first used the song Mystere for one of her performances and ever since then, I have been hooked on their music. I'm sad to see Rene Dupere leave Cirque. In my opinion, and in the opinion of many other musicians and composers, Rene is one of the best living composers. This album is perhaps a collection of his greatest peices. It does have one piece from Benoit Jutras but in my opinion, it doesn't match quite the level that Rene's are at.
If you are interested in Cirque's music, I think this CD would be the way to go.
A good album.......2001-06-01
This is a good way to start your Cirque Du Soleil music collection. Although it has some old music, it is still a good album.
A smattering of Cirque.......2001-05-01
Cirque de Soleil's colelction is in affect a best of CD, but it is hardly that. Certainly the pieces on this disc are the most memorable of each show, they seem to lack something. this is because Cirque de Soleil is an experience, each song on an album influences another, they must be listened to in order to truly experience them. The songs on this album aren't bad, in fact, they are excellent, but they aren't quite as good as if one were to purchase the albums tehy are taken from and listen to the whole album from start to finish.
Cirque du Soleil ~ Fantastique, Mysterious, Addictive.... ~.......2000-11-18
I bought this CD just last night. When I was little, I remember seeing Le Cirque Reinvente on television. I loved it so - the music, the performances - but I didn't know it's name, what it was called. I forgot about it for a time, seeing snippets of it whenever I just barely caught the end credits while surfing the channels. Forgot about it again and then the yearning to hear that distant yet familiar music came back and I did some research, finally discovering what the show was after so many years: Cirque du Soleil! The rest is history - I got hooked instantly and this is my first CD of the music. I wanted to know what the music was like before I bought it so I listened to sound samples from Amazon of the CDs and then decided to buy Collection at my music store. I listened to it last night, am listening to it now as I write this and here are my detailed impressions... You put the CD in and relax... The first sounds are those of a solitary basoon over " Ouveture " from the excellent "Le Cirque Reinvente." The drums pick up and it turns into a majestic melody of strength, dignity, and lingering of what's to come; it gave me spine tingles the moment I heard it! " Egypte " begins, seducingly quiet and calm and working into the delvement of the Egyptian gods and goddesses that rule this mysterious ancient land. The main voice could be a goddess herself, her voice is sweet and clear as she sings the primary lyrics of the song coyly, sure of herself, gently.
"Kumbalawe" is very pretty, carefree and reminded me strangely of 'haps a family of lions relaxing in the grassy savannah awaiting sleep to overtake them underneath the midday sun. It was a very good piece but one though I didn't particularily care for though you might be a different case altogether. "Suite Chinoise" starts as if a theme for royalty and if that was Dupere's mark he DID hit it. Another spine-tingler that turns into a loving, warm melody. Falling rain, then, and a worn, wood flute resounds through the rain forest. All of it collides to form a lovely piece that envelopes so many grand emotions in but only 10 minutes of sheer joy. " Querer" is passionate and sounds to me as being a very nice love song though not in my tastes. "Entracte" I was doubtful at the beginning but it wouldn't let me not like it - it took my chin in it's hand and made me look at it long and clear, to listen to it just for a few seconds more And there it was. I heard the drums kick in and the amazing melody begin in full throttle, pulsing with fun and energy and good humour. You could almost see the act going on in the stage of your mind. "Pokinai" was undescribably gorgeous! It reminded me of a lady hanging on the trapeze with her legs in almost completely darkness as a curled up ball and then unfolding very beautifully, silver rain falling all around her. Slowly, she begins to move and discover hands and feet. That innocence and curiousity gives way slightly to her complete joy that she's ALIVE! Then a young man appears and she discovers young love, they doing various moves in the air.... These are the impressions I get when I listen to this song. "Alegria" was impressive music-wise as well as impressive in vocal. The main voice has a strong, sultry voice that seems to have every possible element in perfect feminity. Even though it probably wasn't meant as a love song, it comes across as such and I have no hesitation in saying it was a flawless piece that reminded me of tan-shaded shadows floating over two lovers... "Kalimando" starts camly with natural sounds taking the spotlight, birds singing, the light and gentle strains of water. It was a ground-centring piece after all the energy and fast-paced pieces before it. The lyrics almost seem to say in their foreign, mysterious tongue, " Time to rest." "Grosse Femme" was a lively melody that sounded a bit like a carousel-horse tune that if you play really loud *grin* it sounds as if you are truly on a merry-go-round at a circus during the night, the cool air swirling around you like mist...
So, in conclusion of my journey into Cirque du Soleil, I have gone into ectasy and back again. I have been happy, sad, nostalgic, dignified, mysterious, and a whole lot more in the expanse of this one CD. If that isn't magic, nothing is.
Correction.......1999-07-22
just wanted to fix a slip in my review- I said Kalandero is in Mystere- it is actually in Alegria. When I said Mystere I was thinking of the song Birimbau- both are track 3 on their respective CDs.

Smoothjazz.com Review.......2005-06-21
I know you're interested in discovering great new Smooth Jazz artists. Otherwise you wouldn't be reading this right now. Read on, then, my jazz loving brethren... 'Cause I've got a hot tip for you: Mark Hollingsworth, amazing sax player, Chicago native now in L.A., featured with the Greg Adams band for almost three years, studio work and tours with more big names than you can imagine, plus TV, motion pictures, commercials... It's unbelievable. Did I mention that he plays sax? Whoa, does he play sax! This brand new debut solo release is ON THE MARK, literally and figuratively, with all of the ingredients you're looking for in a hit Smooth Jazz album. Great melodies, solid grooves, polished, top-drawer musicianship and production, plus that extra hard-to-define aura, that sense of passion and confidence that tells you that Mark really knows what he's doing here, and understands how to touch the Smooth Jazz listener on a visceral level. He's got it! No clinkers on this album... not a one. With nine sparkling originals that include keyboardist Dan Siegel as a special guest on one, and an awesome T.O.P.'esque cover of L.T.D.'s "Back in Love Again", ON THE MARK is what today's dynamic sounding Smooth Jazz is and should be all about. And since I'm dropping acronyms, allow me to encourage you to pick up a copy of O.T.M. A.S.A.P. This is as surefire a Smooth Jazz hit as you're ever going to find. ~Scott O'Brien

Saxaphonist at it's best!.......2005-06-16
When I bought this CD, I listened to it 10 times the first day I owned it. Mark sure knows how to play the Sax. This CD inspires me to dust off my sax and start playing it again. Great job Mark! You are definitely "On the Mark".

Experience The Sounds Of Sound Experience.......2006-10-31
You have wound up on this page for one of two reasons....either by accident or as a hard core funkateer that followed one of the links found throughout Amazon that another listener/reviewer recommended. Which ever one you are, You have stumbled upon a great piece of musical history that deserves to be discovered by any listener who digs the 70's powerhouse funk groups from back in the day.
This is one of those groups that barely made a splash in the industry but sounds wonderful and fresh when listened to today. I tend to hear the influences of groups like Parliament, Ohio Players, Bootsy & maybe mid-late 70's Bar-Kays in some of the songs. Sound Experience is a rather large funk outfit that hailed from Philly under the guidance of Stan Watson, A man who, along with many other artists/producers of the time, contributed some of the best funk music offerings of the "Philly Sound". The bass and drums are deep and driving & the highs are sharp and tinsel-y.
I feel that musically, The group sounds great and could have held their own alonside many of the hard-hitting groups within it's genre any day. I also feel that the vocals are average but could use work. This groups charm was definately in it's musicianship. If you like and own at least 7 of the groups mentioned below, Then Sound Experience belongs in your collection...providing of course, You consider yourself a TRUE fan of funk music. You wouldn't be making a mistake with adding this to your archives.
Ohio Players (early mid to late 70's)
Bar-Kays (mid to late 70's)
Parliament (mid to late 70's)
Rasputin Stash
Black Heat
Slave (late 70's)
Commodores (the yrs of the clavinet)
Bootsy's Rubber Band (frank waddy, maceo & fred wesley yrs)
Cameo
The Counts
There are many more that deserved to be listed but I figure the above 10 should be a sufficient guideline to follow. If you like this sound or the "instrumental" sound of Philadelphia in the mid to late 70's then you are advised to dig on "Sound Experience"
uh, hmmmm...........2004-04-23
First of all- the same thing that happened to 'Guy,' the next reviewer, happened to me- I only got ten tracks on the CD, and the last one cuts out 2 minutes into it.
Second, I'm not feeling this nearly as much as I thought I would be. It's maybe a 4 star release, maybe... And only if you're into a different kind of funk (the latter-era, late-70's, early 80's- slicker, more disco-esque type stuff). But Certainly not 5 stars. I really hate the way the horns sound on a lot of these tracks- so tinsel-y and sharp, to be honest the recording over all doesn't impress. This is a bit too close to disco for me, the beats are a bit repetitive.
Now, I have to say- 40 Acres, is a great tune! It's really dense and starts out with a crusty, hot as hell, fuoonky guitar lick and drums that bust all over the place! Also, 'He's Looking Good...' starts off with a sweet wah-wah guitar/horn combo, pretty nice, kinda disco but nice, the guitars add a lot. Those two tracks are really up there- if the whoe album were of that caliber I'd be more charitable.
Tracks 1, 6 and what I heard of 10 sound pretty cool. BUT. Track 5 is an awful slow jam that's way too long. And the rest are just a bit boring (all of the tracks are a tad long).
So, 2 hot tracks, 2 and a half decent tracks and a bunch of filler... Not exactly 5 star stuff. There's better funk/soul craziness out there to be had. Don't stay away but caveat emptor seriously- and beware that you might not end up with all the listed tracks- as two reviewers and god-knows how many other have been burned...
A Super Bad '70s Funk Power House (doomed to obscurity !).......2001-06-29
When I first starting reviews for Amazon.com, I used to ponder when certain funk powerhouses doomed to out of print obscurity would hit the shelves again so in addition to not having to pay ... for vinyl, the world could yet once again get a true funk injection (like it had not yet since felt since 1974) - - the groups who's names have been on the top of my list have included The Counts, Rasputin Stash, Black Heat and finally the Sound Experience. - - Well I'm happy to say, that most of them are now back on the shelves... and it was a long hard wait for the funky Philly soul powerhouse - - The Sound Experience, who's music has been well sampled on the club circuit, but who's sounds may have slipped past the average funkateer.
I first came across this group when my father bought his pharmacy... and a copy of their LIVE album (recorded before a capacity crowd at some prison or another) happened to be laying in a pile of dirt in the basement of the building. It was one of my first true experiences to hard core '70s boogie and funk... years later I was able to come across two other of their albums, the one with DEVIL WITH THE BUST (one of their biggest and most sampled hits) and the funky horn heavy BOOGIE WOOGIE.
All those albums are now very scratched and beaten up (actually one was borrowed by a DJ and I haven't seen it since) so I'm relieved to see the Soulville Collection offering what I'm happy to say definitely are some of their best cuts. I can't possibly imagine anyone listening to the cuts on this album (even short sound samples) and not having an urge to bump !
Plain and simple, if you're a fan of funk and '70s soul, this great group belongs in your collection... they were a fantastic "live" group (with the horns, funky clavinette, big afros and all) who did a great job at carrying their sound into the studio - - all these years later their grooves are just as infectious as not only when they recorded it, but when I first heard it... true funkateers... get this album on the top of your list ! !

Electro-World groove.......2005-01-14
I have had this CD since the mid-90's and it still is a perfect blend of Indian grooves and chill. The cuts Tantric Sex and Kama Sutra are worth the price of the CD by themselves. 1/2 star off for the cut Temple of Venus which has a skip from the recording session. A very seductive album.
Temple of Venus.......2001-09-03
I like all the Mystical Experience CDs for relaxation, except the Tarot.
My favorite is Temple of Venus.
Beautiful and erotic.......1999-02-06
I have owned this CD for many years, and as friends hear it (particularly women), everyone wants a copy. It seems to be everyone's favorite to make love by.
