While not quite as exemplary of the Boston quintet's '70s sound as Toys in the Attic or Rocks, Get Your Wings was impressive both in terms of its material and its measurable improvement over Aerosmith's debut. From the R&B inflected "Same Old Song and Dance" to the power-rock "Woman of the World" to the rollicking cover of "Train Kept a Rollin'," Wings showed the band solidifying their sound and really taking flight for the first time. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The first of the great Aero albums.......2007-05-30

Along with the two follow-ups, this is the best Aerosmith there is! This is a powerful document of blues-influenced hard rock, the kind of music Aerosmith helped set the standard for. Surprisingly accomplished for being only their second album, this is chock full of good songwriting, heavy melodies, and the masterful guitar work of Perry and Whitford.
There are absolutely no clunkers here and things don't really even settle down but for the melancholy Seasons of Wither, and it is one of their best slow songs. The bitchin' Woman of the World is pure Perry delight and the classic rock staples like the stinging funk of Same Old Song and Dance and the homage with a little extra of Train Kept A Rollin' demonstrate that this band not only recognized its influences but was more than willing to pass the torch to a new generation of rock disciples.
The only real difference between Get Your Wings and the next two albums is the production values; the more money the band made, the better sounding the albums became. Still, the songs are top notch and the band sounds as tight and white-hot as they ever were at the height of their reign during the latter half of the decade. Get Your Wings is essential Aerosmith.

5 out of 5 stars great listen.......2007-05-12

I'm not an Aerosmith fan, and probably never will be. But Get Your Wings strikes me as an improvement over the debut, and probably their best album of the 70's (though it's a tough call between this and Rocks).

"Same Old Song and Dance" is a great way to open an album. We've all heard the song, and now we can hear the song with a slightly extended opening riff section. Yup, the version of the song on this album is a bit longer than the one radio stations play.

Then you have "Lord of the Thighs" which is just a really good song. It stands out with the vibrating effect going on in the background. "Spaced" rules. Best vocal melody on the album. "Woman of the World" is a typical Aerosmith rocker. Pretty good one, though.

After that, "Train Kept a Rollin" is probably my favorite song on the album. I've heard other versions, but this one strikes me as being the best. It really features a crunchy guitar riff at just the right speed. "Seasons of Wither" is another song worth mentioning, for its overall eerie tone and atmosphere.

Solid listen for hard rock collectors.

4 out of 5 stars Still not as good as that first album.......2007-02-20

Same Old Song And Dance, Lord Of The Thighs, Seasons Of Wither are here, I can't deny that those are 3 of their best. Yet, I still think the debut has more energy and is a better album, although the production and sound quality on Get Your Wings is a lot better, but they sound like they're trying too hard here and are IMO in a sophomore slump. they'll be back though.

3 out of 5 stars The Second 3.5 stars.......2007-02-13

I was never really too hip on the album when it first come out and is my least favorite of their first four. Train Kept A Rollin' on this cd is one of the best versions I have ever heard and in itself is worth 5 stars, but the rest really never took hold of me. I own it and listen to it every once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?.......2007-02-02

This is THE Aerosmith album. You can't call yourself fan if you don't have this one. It's some of the all time best work from the "Toxic Twins" and the boys.

5 out of 5 stars Aerosmith box set.......2007-06-14

It was great to be able to replace 3 of my favorite aerosmith records in one fell swoop. I enjoyed listening to all the old stuff that hadn't been on radio for some time. Also, my 20 year old daughter told me that "Get Your Wings " was awesome, and she burned it into her ipod. High praise indeed!

5 out of 5 stars It dosen't get any better than this!.......2005-01-18

The first Aerosmith album was extraordinary, exploding with an energy not unlike the early Rolling Stone or Who albums.
Their second and third albums were just as strong.
Having them all in one box set is a great. You'll never get tired of hearing these tracks.

5 out of 5 stars 3 in 1 what a killer deal!.......2003-08-31

I own each album seperatly, and each one is a 5 star album, and to get all three in one place for this price is a steal, this is Aerosmith's first three albums, and maybe their 3 best, you be the judge. I would recamend this to anyone a new or old Aerosmith fan or for anyone who just loves good ol' american Rock and Roll

5 out of 5 stars Aerosmith.......2003-05-10

As a companion for this boxset, you should really read"Walk This Way,the autobiography of Aerosmith" by Stephen Davis. As a long
time fan,it gave me a lot of insight into the band and the music. If you`re new fans or not,you will be enthralled.

5 out of 5 stars The Best box collection there could possibly be.......2002-08-18

I just purchased this box set and when I got home I inserted the three cds (seperately) into my cd player and still can't get them out. As soon as one cd ends another one goes in. The best songs on the cds are (in album order): From Aerosmith: 1. Make It, 2. Somebody, 3. Dream On, 4. Mama Kin, 5. Movin' Out. From Get Your Wings: 1. Same Old Song And Dance, 2. Lord Of The Thighs, 3. Spaced, 4. Woman Of The World, 5. S.O.S. (Too Bad), 6. Seasons Of Wither, 7. Pandora's Box. From Toys In The Attic: 1. Toys In The Attic, 2. Uncle Salty, 3. Adam's Apple, 4. Walk This Way, 5. Sweet Emotion, 6. No More No More, 7. Round And Round, 8. You See Me Crying.

Just because I left out some songs from each does not in any way mean that those aren't great tracks. Listen to the whole cd before you try to find the best from each one. The best thing about this set is that it includes the origional version of Same Old Song And Dance. If you only heard the version on their greatest hits cd it edits the Gotcha with the cocaine they found with your gun part. All three cd's are excellent and you need to buy them to get the full Aerosmith experience.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - A huge step up from their debut.......2004-05-04

Get Your Wings (1974.) Aerosmith's second album.

In 1973, Aerosmith entered the musical scene with their self-titled debut album. Though not a spectacular album by any means, it certainly showed the world that the band had some serious potential. The following year, the band recorded their second full-length LP, Get Your Wings. Was it an improvement over their previous release, or another subpar effort? Read on for my review.

To put it simply, this album is a MASSIVE improvement over it's predecessor. It's not exactly a five-star masterpiece, but it's a great album. Steven Tyler has finally managed to find his voice, and it shows on every track on this album. Joe Perry's guitar playing here is also excellent. The band kicks off the album with its lone hit, Same Old Song And Dance. This song went onto become a huge hit for the band, and why not? This is bluesy hard rock at its very best. Although it was the only really popular song to emerge from this release, it's not the only good one. Lord Of The Thighs is another bluesy hard rocker that almost certainly won't fail to please if you're a fan of the band. And, like many rock and roll artists, Aerosmith recorded a cover of the blues classic, Train Kept A Rollin'. Their version of the song is nothing short of excellent. The two closing tracks, Seasons Of Wither and Pandora's Box, are two of the band's most underrated songs ever recorded. It's a shame they don't normally end up on the band's best of compilations - they belong there. Ultimately, it's one hell of an album.

To put it simply, if you like blues-based hard rock, you're going to love this album. Though not Aerosmith's finest hour by any means, it's a damn fine album nonetheless, and it's well worth adding to your collection.

It's the first 3 albums, as advertised. 3 amazing albums though. Each cd has the red label with track listing design: I think other older Columbia albums were like that. The disks fit into the sides of that tall-shaped box easily enough, but you still get all 3 album jackets/booklets as well, just as if you bought them separately.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest album ever?.......2005-11-02

So what exactly does it take to create the worlds all time best album? well first things first you need a great band, and look at what we have here the worlds greatest band! You also need good material, like hardrockers and setamental beautiful ballads, looks like we got those as well. Looks like the band has the makings of what it takes to make an amazing album, lets see how it stacks up.

Well this was obviously a step up from Aerosmiths self-titled debut, not that that was a bad album but this blows that one away! Steven finally found his amazing voice here not that weird clogged noise sounding one he used on the first album, he must have listened to Dream On and said, "damn that sounds a lot better." Joe Perry and Brad Whitfords guitars only seem to be getting stronger here. The riffs on songs like 'Same Old Song And Dance' and 'Pandoras Box' show why Joe Perry is the worlds greatest guitar player. Brad Whitford plays amazing rythym on songs like 'Lord Of The Thighs' and 'Spaced.' Tom Hamilton really learned how to play the bass on this album, on the last album he didnt realy seem to know what to play but on songs like 'Same Old' it is easy to see why many people concider him the best. Joey Kramer keeps a hard rock edge to every song while still adding a bit of funk and soul to each drum roll. Sepperately the band is clearly talented but put together they are even better which this album clearly shows. The bands songwriting has clearly gotten better, tracks like 'Seasons Of Whiter' show what an underrated songwriter Steven Tyler is, Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton help out with the lyrics a lot here as well.

The song quality of this album is uncomparable, to me this is what a good rock and roll album should be, all other albums should be compared to this. Never since I first heard this album nor before have I concidered an album better then this. And to think that this is one of Aerosmiths overlooked albums is a travisty. Other albums like Rocks and Toys In The Attic are amazing albums, but they just dont match up to the power of Get Your Wings!
