1 out of 5 stars Here's the secret: it's awful.......2007-03-11

Santana completely sold out here, delivering an awful collection of mainly arena-rockers. And even if this were otherwise a masterpiece, I'd still dock a full star on the account of Open Invitation. Is it his worst song ever? Quite possibly. Even at his prime, Santana couldn't write lyrics, and this is just a mess of bedroom cliches set to an awkwardly thumping, bombastic pop-metal backdrop. And forget ANYTHING about creativity - Santana's classic blues/rock/Latin/jazz guitar tone is dispensed of completely for the most part.
Speaking of selling out, how else could somebody explain the awful disco epic One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)? Seriously, disco and arena-rock ain't Santana's thing. The cover of Traffic's Dealer is awful, stripped of even remote energy or excitement - same goes for his cover of Buddy Holly's Well All Right (via Blind Faith), which is at least better than Invitation, One Chain, or Stormy, so stupid it'll make your IQ lower while you listen to it. Okay, not really, but I don't like the song regardless. You'd expect the two instrumentals to save the day here, right? Well, one of them does: the exciting Wham!, which is even then a more commercial Soul Sacrifice - the other, Life is a Lady/Holiday, is a Europa ripoff so blatant Carlos should've sued himself for writing it. I'm gonna be the early Santana purist here - the debut, Abraxas, III, Love Devotion Surrender, Caravanesari and even Festival blow this out of the water.

3 out of 5 stars ...and a nice album cover, too.".......2006-01-21

this lp has all the trimmings of what a santana album contained in the late 70s period of his long journey. however, the song that sticks out in my mind is his cover of the late 60's classic, "stormy". this version starts off with some deep fender rhodes playing, and then carlos comes in with his trademark licks. the arrangements have all the 70s vibe that you could ask for and plenty more, so check this one out, if you can.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated recording with terriffic vocals.......2005-12-06

This recording has received a bad reputation because of the so-called "disco" and pop element.

What disco is present, sounds more like Funkadelic or Parliament, than the Bee Gees.

The pop element has strong Latin tinges to it.

Unlike Zebop, (see my review), the vocals and production are superior. There is more a lively performance than in Zebop. Unlike Zebop, this bargain CD reprints everything from the LP.

It is an underrated recording. It gets only 4 stars for a Santana recording, but would get 5 stars for disco or pop recording.

By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.

Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

5 out of 5 stars A Righteous Rocker Passes 30 Gracefully.......2005-06-07

INNER SECRETS, the first studio album that Carlos Santana released after turning thirty, is great. Santana is a skilled, soulful guitarist, as well as a great human being who advocates sanctions against Indonesia for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist. Most of the songs are great, so don't let the Steve Winwood fixation deter you from buying this album. I should mention that vocalist Greg Walker, who joined in 1976, is also in top form on INNER SECRETS.

4 out of 5 stars Greg Walker makes this CD.......2005-01-08

The addition of Greg walker to the band was a welcome addition.
Alex Ligertwood was okay but I don't want Santana to sound like Journey. Greg Walker, in my opinion, is second only to Greg Rollie as a good fit to Santana. This CD doesn't set the world on fire but it wasn't meant to. It is very listenable and the remakes of the older songs are well done. They are songs I never thought I would see on a Santana album but when you can actually improve on Buddy Holly, Classics Four, and the Zombies then you've earned four stars in my book.

      4 out of 5 stars Remastered?.......2004-01-17

I ordered this "remastered" version. While it may have been remastered (it is not listed anywhere on the cd itself) it was not remastered up to the standards of any other CD released in 2000.

The music on the other hand is excellent.

4 out of 5 for the suspect remastering.

5 out of 5 stars VOCALS ARE THE KEY.......2003-01-01

The key to Santana's current success (Supernatural, etc.) is of course due to all the guest vocalists. Having them from different genres didn't hurt either. The key to this album is having Greg Walker's silky smooth voice to compliment Carlos' always dynamic playing. Having seen Santana perform live several times, the weak link has always been the singer (except when I caught them touring to support this album). The songs may not be the strongest but the album, as a whole, is still my favorite. Carlos needs to find a steady lead singer on the caliber of a Gregg Rolie or Greg Walker to pair up with his signature guitar sound. I recommend this CD to let the listener hear a more rounded Santana (the group) minus the mediocre vocalist or one-shot guest artist. Don't take my word for it. Let the music do the talking.
