Editorial Reviews

Roundly pilloried at the time of its 1986 release as a posthumous barrel-scraping, Menlove Avenue is actually a much more complicated proposition. While it's true that the album's 10 tracks are merely outtakes from Lennon's troubled 1974-1975 studio sessions, the music here is fairly enlightening and occasionally even excellent. The five songs originally recorded for Rock 'N' Roll are admittedly pretty awful; it's no wonder that these soggy versions of "Angel Baby" and "To Know Her Is to Love Her" didn't make it onto the album, or that John fobbed "Rock and Roll People" off on Johnny Winter instead of releasing it himself. But the second half rescues five great Walls and Bridges cuts from the over-produced murk of their "official" versions, and the results are nothing less than sublime. Recommended to hardcore Lennonists with a soft spot for Walls and Bridges; everyone else should probably avoid it. --Dan Epstein

2 out of 5 stars This is by far John's worst lp..........2007-04-10

...but don't blame him - he never wanted it released (at least that is the speculation). It was Yoko who released it, either because she is a money-grubbing biatch, or because she had no concept of which of John's songs are good and which are not.

In any case, this album pretty much sucks. There are better BOOTLEGS out there of unreleased Lennon material; however for the most part, those too are a waste of time. Stick with the official releases at least until you have heard all of those.

If you are a big Lennon fan you may want this album, just to hear it and complete your collection. If you are a beginning or intermediate fan, stay away from this album.

Go with "Plastic Ono Band" (his first solo album), "Imagine", "Mind Games", and "Walls and Bridges" for his best solo work.

If you want unreleased stuff AND a good collection, go with the Box Set.

John Lennon is a genius, but even geniuses have slow days. This is a disc released after his untimely death. If you want to know what John is all about don't start with this disc. Start with Imagine or the Beatles stuff.

4 out of 5 stars c'mon people get some menLOVE.......2006-10-10

John Lennon could scream and moan and it would be better than any crap out now. I think you can get some of that on unfinished music, but on to this. The slower quiet "live" versions starting with steel and glass are perfect. I always picture John like some struggling musician playing old smokey west side bar, no one listening, he's just feelin' down in it some night. Mostly just John's voice dominating over the backing music, sometimes just piano. Oh how I wish there were more/any artists like this still around who could sing and song write, play the instruments. More than just a face dancing around to some stolen music they call there own, please. Rock and roll people and since my baby left me are just fun, and you want to love her when you hear John singing to know her is to love her you really have to think of your own special love and you know its from the heart.

1 out of 5 stars If You Like John Lennon, Steer Clear of this album.......2005-09-02

I have been a big Lennon fan for years. This album is a slow dirge and I struggle to find a track that stands out! Tracks 6-10 are off Walls and Bridges Album, only slower versions. Stick to W & B, far nicer versions.
To Know Her is To Love Her will put you too sleep! No wonder I bought this album second hand, someone else bought it new then sold it on! If John Lennon interests you musically, choose something like, Imagine, Plastic Ono Band, Sometime In New York, Mind Games, Rock'n'Roll or Double Fantasy e.t.c.....

2 out of 5 stars Imagine There's No Residuals.......2004-12-05

Imagine there's no Yoko,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to shill or buy for,
No dividends too,
Imagine the investors
Haggling for a piece...

Imagine there's no trademarks,
I wonder if you can,
No need to strip mine demos,
Plundering John's old tapes,
Imagine the promoters
Making a quick buck...

You may say she's a schemer,
But she's not the only one,
There's lots of other hucksters,
Looking out for number one.
