Hey There, Plain White T's.......2007-07-06
I wish there were half stars, but this is closer to 4 than to 3 for me.
I'm older than the average demographic for this band, if I went to their concert I'd have to wear a "Delilah's Mom" t-shirt :) but Hey There Delilah has been playing on my radio station and the song just sticks in my head.
It is the song that every girl wishes someone would right for her. Unusual these days to hear something sweet about commitment, it's a beautiful sound with a beautiful message.
I bought the EP along with the All That We Need album. It's all young catchy pop (but not bubble-gum pop) stuff, airplay sort of stuff. It is not an acoustic band. Very enjoyable for a 46 yo mom and my 19 yo son doesn't mind me playing it in the car. He just doesn't appreciate me singing along...
BTW, I like it that the rest of the band is in the Delilah video. That shows class.
Let me be your Sampson, Delilah.......2007-07-04
"Listen to my voice, it's my disguise . . ." My niece said: "I found out who did that song. The new Delilah song." I had completely forgotten but she said there was a song about Delilah. I named one of my dogs Delilah. She was a stray that some family found, and put a flyer up at the dog park. The kids called her Lilah, but I changed it to Delilah . . . and it fit her to a "T."
In the bible Delilah is the downfall of Sampson, a strong Hebrew warrior. She keeps trying to get the secret of his strength, but when he tells her, she has Sampson's enemies do it. He tells her, if I am tied up with green saplings, then I will be powerless. He wakes up tied with green saplings, bursts the bonds, and slaughters the enemy. Whatever he tells Delilah, they try. You'd think he'd catch on, but no. He, like an idiot, tells her his real secret. His strength will never wane, as long as he never cuts his hair. Next thing you know, he's as bald as Britney Spears.
Anyway, my dog Delilah is a pretty red dog, an Australian Cattle Dog, or maybe a Kelpie. Maybe part Dingo. She is pretty, but can be contrary. She might not want to come in at night, and if you leave the gate open, and she gets out, good luck trying to get her to come back.
Anyway, my niece Kelsey told me about this band so I checked them out. I like the song, "Hey There Delilah" and it is also the name of their album. There are two versions, and the last one seems to be a sing along, like their fans heard it and everyone who came to their show knew the words. I like it that they inspire such loyalty.
Their music sounds like rough rock, but with a focus on songwriting. Maybe they would fall in the category of Emo. I played it for my dog, Delilah, and was wondering if she would respond to her name being sung. She had no reaction. She gave it two paws down. But what does she know about music anyway? I like it.
Great.......2006-09-21
I bought this because I saw the Hey There Delilah video on MTV 2. This cd is great, and I listened to the title track about 10 times.
Love this CD.......2006-06-18
I recently saw this group at Warped Tour and really liked them. I had their CD before this, but never really listened to it. At Warped Tour, they had a tent and they all signed a tee shirt I bought, and then took a picture with me and my sister. The entire way home from the concert, I listened to both of their CD's, and really liked them.

Such is the arresting beauty of Tord Gustavsen's sound, it's no surprise that his albums have captured a significant following, surpassing even those of other rarified artists on the ECM label. But the Norwegian pianist doesn't live on beauty alone. His sculpted playing, which draws strongly on his church background with its tidy gospel voicings while also incorporating Spanish and South African accents, has a kind of liquid weight that brings to mind Ethan Iverson of the icon-bashing Bad Plus, as markedly different as they are stylistically. Beyond that, it's the remarkable shift-shaping qualities of Gustavsen's trio that make Being There so compelling. Gustavsen has talked about being influenced artistically by "the psychology of relationships." The psychology of the relationship among him, bassist Harald Johnsen, and drummer Jarle Vespestad is made compelling not only by standard interactive effects, but also by the unique shape-shifting that occurs through continual shifts in how much voice each player has in relation to the others, how much lightness or darkness, how much intensity. A notable advance over the trio's first two albums, on which being deliberate sometimes translated into dull, Being There rarely loses its grip. There are stories being told here, with endings that change with each spin. --Lloyd Sachs
Album Description
One of the great success stories of jazz in the last five years, the Tord Gustavsen Trio follows up their first two hit albums with the eagerly-anticipated Being There. The new release finds the trio continually opening up the music in new and lyrical ways. Along with Gustavsen's infectious music (both ballads and up-tempo) drummer Jarle Vespestad and bassist Harald Johnsen make considerable contributions to the new album. Johnsen lends his compositional skills with the graceful tango "Karmosin," and Vespestad is often as much a front-line voice in the music as Gustavsen himself.
Proving that sensual, spiritual jazz can come from even icy Norway, the Tord Gustavsen Trio stormed onto the jazz scene in 2003 with their debut recording, Changing Places. 2005's The Ground took the band one step further and even topped the pop charts in Norway, an unprecedented achievement. The restraint of Gustavsen's approach and the allure of his simply drawn melodies has spoken to an audience that does not normally concern itself with improvisation.
Customer Reviews:
takes more than a listen to................2007-06-29
I loved Tord first cd . This mix of orientalisim , romantisim , the slow tempo .....everything worked . On this 3rd cd , it took me awhile to get to the music . I first found it much to slow , some of the best tracks are actually hidden in the end of the cd , the last 4 or 5 tracks , couple in the beginning , and then a long and empty passage in between . Tord is a wonderfull artist , with a great sense of drama , but I think he falls a little short on his 3rd cd .
Dreamlike Adagio.......2007-06-12
The one thing Tord Gustavsen's jazz trio has in common with novelist Haruki Murakami is their ability to create dreamlike landscape through their own creativity media. The difference, though, is that in the process of the creation, Murakami will use as many as possible details to blend reality and dreamscape; whereas in the case of Tord Gustavsen Trio, we are only provided with the basic framework for slow and very often restrained melodies, in which nothing is developed into complexity rather than merely the feeling per se.
Nonetheless, this is not to say that their music is lackluster. The trio displayed in their previous albums Changing Places and the Ground, their abilities to compose such beautiful yet not abstract jazz in a discipline which Gustavsen puts, "inspired by a love of spaces". In jazz, sometimes playing a riff in between notes might be easy, but leaving it blank takes up imagination. Tord Gustavsen Trio definitely has this imagination.
Releasing their third album in five years, Being There, as part of a trilogy, the trio has taken their restraint way of utterance to a new territory. When you start listening to the album, the sense of déjà vu will dominate you even if you have never heard of their previous albums. Yet as the music goes on, it will be clear to even long-time listeners that you are not in a familiar place at all. Tunes like Blessed Feet (a Jarrett-like funky tune) and Where We Went (an up-tempo Spanish dance) sing a more assertive but not aggressive kind of lyrics, while the music is still kept as simple and uncanny as it possibly can. The way trio instruments are approached, especially by drummer Jarle Vespestrad, whose plays are being felt rather than heard for most of the time, meshes delicate whispers altogether in modest tempi and continuous rubato. This un-trio-like instrumental integration makes the music feel like dream flows in a constantly changing vista, which finally resolves back to the same place where it started when the album ends with the peaceful tune Wide Open.
All About Jazz reviewer John Kelman put the trio's distinctive character beautifully: "As silence can sometimes speak as loudly as thunder, and insofar as careful elaboration of melody can be just as compelling as more vivid expansion, Gustavsen's trio makes a clear case for the elusive power of restraint." Gustavsen phrases it romantically, that his music is "about loving every note". It is this very tendency of playing what you like, rather than what you ought to play between passages, together with the elaborated yet elegant lyrics of the tunes, that creates this unique aesthetic and the kind of feeling you will not have very often in reality, but in dreams.

Evidence that one can make a musical about anything, Exhibit A: 1776. As one might expect, the whole concept of making a musical about the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence was greeted in the late 1960s with, well, ridicule. The show debuted on Broadway in 1969, and three years later, when its run finally ended, it was its producers who had the last laugh. In addition, it toured for an additional two years and beat out Hair (in 1969 yet!) for a Tony Award. This recording, with the original Broadway cast, includes many of the same actors who went on to star in the film, the version with which most audiences today are probably familiar. One notable exception is Rex Everhart, who replaced Howard da Silva at some performances and on this recording. But there's still William Daniels as John Adams, though in some cases his performance is more subdued than it was on film. Musically, 1776 is an odd creation, considering when it came into being. As one might expect, there's a lot of fife and drum going on, especially in the opening number and during "The Lees of Old Virginia." For those less than familiar with the plot, it hinges on the idealism of Adams, who's trying his best to back up the American Revolution with some legislative action, and spends much of his time arguing with either the Continental Congress or God, as in "Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve": "A second flood, a simple famine / Plagues of locusts everywhere / Or a cataclysmic earthquake / I'd accept with some despair / But no, you sent us Congress / Good God, sir, was that fair?" (One could argue that he gets further with God.) While not entirely historically accurate, and containing some rather peculiar numbers (Franklin, Jefferson, and Adams sitting around debating what their new country's national bird is going to be ranks among the oddest), there's no questioning 1776's staying power. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Before Sondheim's COMPANY and after MAN OF LA MANCHA..........2007-04-30
For me, 1776 is a great companion to MAN OF LA MANCHA as one of the most entertaining AND intellectually worthy amalgams of music, lyrics, book, theme, plot, characterizations and dialogue to ever come out of pre-1970's Broadway musical theatre. Each song is like a little gem, and displays the broad range of emotions and ideas with which 1776 brims. Satiric, romantic, hilarious, heartbreaking, disturbing, dark, inspiring, thoughtful, humane, and even a little bawdy, the songs glide and tromp all over the map, as does the show itself. As with LA MANCHA, 1776 broke open the Broadway musical, making it a pitch-perfect example of what can truly make a musical more than a toe-tapping time killer... while never becoming tedious, pompous, windy, or dull. If anything, it crackles with suspense.
And as to the reviewer who was shocked that it would win out over HAIR? Listen to "Mamma Look Sharp" or "Molasses to Rum to Slaves" to hear exactly the play's political and often-unflattering ideological landscape. This was definitely a Vietnam-era play whose content was as disturbingly pertinent, then, as it is, now. And, despite all of this, the score and play never become leaden or preachy. On the contrary, each performance is a gem, and each character is witty and unique. Who knew that history could be a passionate and fun adventure?
Overrated Tony Award Winner.......2006-06-16
How could this musical win the Tony award having as a competitor a play like HAIR which - for many people - stands as an emblematic theatre piece of the 60's? Who remembers a tune out of this musical? On the contrary, "Aquarius", "I Got Life" or "Walking in Space" are still popular and they play all over the world. Even ZORBA and PROMISES PROMISES - both candidates for the award in the same year - have songs that are still remembered. 1776 may wake up patriotic feelings to American listeners which is quite understandable but the music and songs are old-fashioned, overrated and awfully boring.
Brilliant, Definitive and Remarkably Accurate!.......2005-12-18
1776 has become an institution, thanks to the motion picture which was made of this original Broadway show, and which starred most of the cast from the theatrical production. It gets rerun every July 4th week on some movie channel or local station!
William Daniels IS John Adams to many people, and even though the story of the birth of the United States probably wasn't this lyrical and lively, Composer Sherman Edwards was historically accurate in the facts of the tale.
In addition to learning about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this is also love story... in fact two love stories, with John Adams and his wife Abigail, separated by circumstance and interacting only in his mind, and Thomas Jefferson and his wife, Martha, here, played by the big throated (and now legendary) Betty Buckley.
There is also a sense of fraternity, with the members of the Continental Congress grappling with the concept of breaking away from a tyranical ruler. And even though you know the outcome, the story is still filled with tension and excitement in the mechanics of it. Just how DID this country get formed?
The disc's liner notes explain the show's libretto and give you some rare behind-the-scenes info about the creation of the musical, the challenges it faced before becoming the standard that it now is, and a bit about the amazing Mr. Edwards, which is a story worthy of being told as well.
It's an Independence Day must!
Saw this on Broadway .......2005-11-12
Saw this show, with original cast, on Broadway in '69 and it has stayed with me ever since then. Every time I listen to these songs, I laugh. The historical figures (done with some tongue-in-cheek) are highly entertaining and even better if you see the movie. I would recommend the dvd for a great, lighthearted evening, and good family entertainment. You can't miss with this one! A winner on all fronts.
Quite a premise.......2005-07-20
Though it seems an odd choice to write a musical about, it works well. The whole thing seems a bit dated now, it still has great songs. Most dimpressive song, definately "Molasses to Rum". I gave it 4 stars for THAT song.

After immeasurable success in the U.S., Faith Hill finally comes to Europe, and There You'll Be is a sort of catch-up for the best bits we may have missed along the way (or, in other words, a greatest hits collection for the uninitiated). A dozen songs which map the path of the Georgia singer, it includes the massive hit for which she has come to be known over here--"There You'll Be," from the Pearl Harbor soundtrack--together with some pop anthems like "The Way You Love Me (Love to Infinity Mix)." However, the style she delivers most convincingly is that of her roots in country, with "Let Me Let Go", "Piece of My Heart," and "You Give Me Love" from the earlier albums being the clear highlights of this collection. --Gunther Matejka

Not Good Enough.......2007-04-07
I write this knowing how much I love to hear Faith Hill sing , and knowing how much of her Music that I own , and have listened to over the
years , this supposed to be Greatest Hits Ablum that leaves out some of her Hits ,adds these New Songs does away with what the Album is Called , and suppose to be , "The Best OF Faith Hill" , I DON'T THINK SO!
Just the good stuff.......2007-03-09
I am not a huge country western fan, but there are certain artists I really like. I like when an artist comes out with a greatest hits CD that really is filled with greastest hits. If you are a Faith Hill fan, but want to buy just one CD, then buy this one.
Very Disappointed.......2007-03-08
Thought it would be a greatest hits CD of all her original music. Would not have purchased if I had heard CD before I ordered it.
Great Compilation.......2006-11-12
This import CD by Faith Hill is a great compilation of her hits, it also includes never before released songs such as "over the rainbow" which she performs with great diversity. Although a little pricy, well worth the money for true Faith Hill fans.
Sounds Good but It is miss something!.......2006-09-16
This cd sounds good but it is missing some of her best songs! 'It Matters To Me' is my fav and it is not to be found on Faith Hill's Best of! She has some good ones with Tim McGraw also not on this cd! So I would wait!!!!!!!!

In today's worship-crazed phase of Christian pop, Mercy Me fits right in with smooth melodies, passionate lyrics, and a vertical focus. Yet the transition from worship band to major-label act demands more. Almost There promises just enough to allow it to rise above its inconsistencies. Prayer of Jabez-inspired "Bless Me Indeed" is a glimmer of brilliance where the group brings it all together, but it's the poignancy and power of "I Can Only Imagine" that testifies to Mercy Me's great potential. The dramatic ballad captures a believer's hope for the afterlife and is fueled by Bart Millard's authoritative vocals. The song will continue to be a staple in church worship services for years to come. Then there are the not so brilliant moments, including the cheesy "House of God" and "All Fall Down." Weak moments aside, Almost There offers enough fireworks to make Mercy Me an act to watch. --Michael Lyttle

Almost There by Mercy Me.......2007-01-10
I loved this CD. I Can Only Imagine is a beautiful song that has touched everyone in my family. My kids ask to hear this CD everytime we are in the car.
Never Knew Why It Took So Long.......2006-12-08
In the wake of Christian rock bands who are trying to extend their spiritual message in a secular way, perhaps to reach a new audience, Mercy Me continues to stand out and impress with their blatant and unhindered worship songs that fill the airwaves with the perfect words to honor God. I have not heard one song by Mercy Me that did not make me nod my head in agreement or shout out loud to glorify the Lord. Now I can't understand why it took me so long to find my way to songs that openly worship, as opposed to songs that send subtle messages to the public that they may never get without a little help.
Bart Millard has one of the most soothing yet uplifting voices in the business. It is hard to listen to only a few minutes of his voice and not want more. It is also great to know that the band's growing fame has never weakened their desire to honor God in everything they do. They will remain a role model for other bands who wish to worship without fear of ridicule or lack of popularity. As Mercy Me has shown, "...We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

AC/DC's second U.S. release took the raw energy from their debut, High Voltage, up a notch, producing another huge collection of driving, intense songs for serious headbanging, but adding a bit more professionalism into the equation. The songwriting and production are tighter and more focused, and standouts such as "Whole Lotta Rosie," "Problem Child," "Let There Be Rock," and "Bad Boy Boogie" almost have to fight with "filler" like "Go Down" and "Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be" for the spotlight; but really, there's not a wasted track here. Guitarists Angus and Malcom Young further define their grooves, and vocalist Bon Scott sounds like he's on the verge of combusting. Let There Be Rock is big and lean. --Lorry Fleming

Not a bad album but, for my taste, the weakest album from front man Bon Scott. I think that, with the exception of the amazing title track, it is a mediocre album. Again - I would buy it, but I'd buy this one last after all the others. That's for the music, but I'd still buy it for the booklet and to have a complete Bon Scott collection.
All of these remastered reissues are GREAT! I walked into Best Buy and bought all at once (well, except for Let There Be Rock which I needed to special order) and that $70 happily flew out of my hands. The books that come with each CD are well worth the money themselves. Unlike some booklets like these, they aren't padded with "I love this band", "this album is great" and "this and every other song is amazing historic and will change your life."
Some background about the album, the time period in the band's history, and other behind the scenes info make up most of it including information about the tours and other trivia. Good, meaty stuff.
Bon Scott!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-21
With AC/DC,Rock will always be there. This album being the latest addition to my collection. The 4th with Bon,in my collection. May I say,Bon was the Best!!!!!! With all respect to Brian Johnson ,who led sang on perhaps, one of my fave albums of all time,Back In Black.Bon just sang with the rawest energy ever,in my opinion. This album just had the rockenest rockers ever.Starting off with "Go Down",which has so much energy.Than going into "Dog eat Dog","Let There Be Rock","Bad Boy Boogie","Problem Child"(of course,it was on Dirty Deeds too),through the last "Whole Lott Rosie".This album just has so much energy and will rock your socks off!!!!!!!!!
Bon and AC/DC forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
More Great Rock And Roll From The Heart.......2007-01-13
Let there be rock was the Usa follow up to High Voltage...Ac/Dc is a band unlike any other,in that the style has never changed no matter what. If you put on their debut album High Voltage and compare it to the latest "Stiff Upper Lip" released many many many years later,it sounds extremely similar,as if it could have been released a few months later (of course with the exception of Bon Scott's vocals) All that being said,I love this CD as I love all Ac/Dc releases. They always play from the heart and put 100 percent into every song. You can't say that for many bands, most bands release songs onto their albums that you know darn well were just thrown on there to take up space. Let there be rock is very similar in style to high voltage, the lyric content is much the same as is the driving beats and three chord anthems...I wish I could have given this a 3 and a half star review because it is certainly above average but I can't in good conscience say it is one step below perfect either..there are some fantastic memorable songs on this, such as the title cut "Let There Be Rock" "hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be","Overdose" and of course the absolute best song on the CD "Whole Lotta Rosie",those songs are right up there with any of the best songs from the entire Ac/Dc catalog, but there are some songs that don't stand up (in my opinion) such as "Go Down" and "Dog Eat Dog" ..it's not that they aren't great songs because they are,it's just that they aren't as catchy or memorable. The one thing I never quite understood is why they released "Problem Child" on this CD and a few years later released the same exact song on the Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap CD...it is a great song but why put it on twice? This is definitely a great CD...the production is top notch and very clear and all fans of good rock and roll and metal should buy this...but if you are new to the band start with Highway To Hell or Back In Black to get a true taste of the genius of this band...they stuck to their guns and will live forever in rock history
the upside - blues based rock/metal at it's finest...some extremely tasty lead guitar playing by Angus and some of the best metal screaming in the world by Bon Scott...great production,a great booklet with awesome pictures and stories comes with it, and some classic songs including "Whole Lotta Rosie" which is one of the best Ac/Dc songs ever...all 8 songs are great to rock out to and crank up to 10
the downside - only 8 songs...no bonus tracks on the remastered edition, and one of the 8 songs "problem child" can be found on Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap...many of the songs on this album sound nearly identical to songs on the previous release 'high voltage' and the one to follow 'powerage'
the bottom line - with Ac/Dc you simply can't go wrong...this is what rock and roll was meant to be...you should buy this CD if you love rock and roll of any kind because it would appeal to fans of blues rock, metal, and all styles in between..great production...it's not their best CD but even an average Ac/Dc release is better than most band's best CD...go out and buy this but I recommend first buying Back In Black and Highway To Hell and then you'll be ready to crank up "Let There Be Rock" and air guitar the day away...this band rocks and this CD rocks ..the donutman says so
WOW.......2006-10-08
LET THERE BE ROCK in my opinion is AC/DC's first classic album. I don't count HIGH VOLTAGE as a classic album since it's actually a compilation of the best songs from their first two albums. You can tell this is going to be great right from the first song. GO DOWN kicks the album off with great guitar work, and the most inspired vocals Bon Scott had done up to that point. It's obvious Bon is peaking both as a singer, and as a lyric writer throughout the album. The entire band is much improved since the DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP album. Anyway, GO DOWN is a great opening track, and often overlooked. The second song is DOG EAT DOG, by now you should have your volume knob as far up as it will go. LET THERE BE ROCK is the third song, and it is as great as the first two. BAD BOY BOOGIE is the fourth great song in a row. PROBLEM CHILD is the next song, and it's a great song, but it seems out of place. And it should because it was on DDDDC. The next song is OVERDOSE, which has a slow build-up that AC/DC would use often for the rest of their career. OVERDOSE might be the weak point of the album, because it's just very good. Now we get to HELL AIN'T A BAD PLACE TO BE, at this point I'm trying to get my stereo to go louder. If anyone wants to know what AC/DC is about, just play HELL AIN'T A BAD PLACE TO BE. And finally we get to WHOLE LOTTA ROSIE, another classic song. Since I'm not a musician it's hard for me to describe this album. The best way I can describe it is loud guitars, loud drums and a very raw, hard sound. This is what rock music should be.

Wilco's follow-up to A.M. impresses first with its size: 19 tunes fill the double-CD package, and the packaging unfolds like a larger-than-life 1970s-era gatefold album cover. But the love affair with the artwork is short-lived, fading as the music takes center stage, making plain the band's overwhelming stretch into innumerable styles. Jeff Tweedy's love of pop and the mechanics of making pop albums is clear almost immediately, as he and his cohort utilize the studio to create and manipulate undertows and snaky recorded elements throughout many of their tunes (a keyboard touch, a guitar's flair, a cymbal's unexpected crash). There are the plainspoken acoustic numbers, recalling Tweedy's tenure in Uncle Tupelo, and there are also unwinding swoops of tinted, guitar-heavy rock--one of which collapses into chromatic jabs at a piano only to resolve in silence on "Sunken Treasure." Oodles of influences fill Wilco's collective mind, and they're perfectly content to pile the trace elements atop each other and make scrambled pop perfection. --Andrew Bartlett

Being There Lives up to its Reputation.......2007-06-17
Being There by Wilco has been rightly praised by critics and fans alike since its release, but unlike many criticaly acclaimed albums, this one actually lives up to the hype and reputation. Well, "hype" may not be the right term, as Wilco still hasn't really broken wide into the mainstream of music, and may never do so. However, Being There is one of my favorite albums, because it is so listenable, so accessible, and mostly, the songs are just so darn good. They have plenty of songs on the edge of what some may call country music, but Wilco are able to take the best parts of the country sound while leaving the dregs behind. Great, sprawling album, fun to listen to, musically all over the place - easily 5 of 5 stars.
After Ten Years.......2007-06-14
There's been ten years of "Being There" playing first in my c.d. player then on my computer and mp3 player. Simply put, it's one of the greatest albums of all time.
That's it.
Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun.......2007-05-19
While I much prefer Tweedy & Co.'s shift away from alt-country after this record, Being There is still a really great double-album that I hold in high regard. Like every Wilco record, this one takes a couple of listens before you can fully appreciate it. The fringe-country stuff (Far, Far Away / Forget The Flowers / Someday Soon) is fantastic and provides the backbone for the band's foray into rock (Hotel Arizona / I Got You / Monday) and Tweedy's quieter ballads (Sunken Treasure / The Lonely 1). Kingpin and Dreamer In My Dreams tend to fall somewhere in the middle of the rock/country spectrum, and are great examples of how talented each musician is. I gave this one four stars, but a good argument can be made that it deserves five.
Wilco's last country/roots rock albumn.......2007-04-20
I love Uncle Tupelo and the early work of the two splinter bands: Son Volt, led by Jay Farrar, and Wilco, led by Jeff Tweedy. Although this is only the second albumn from Wilco, it is their last as a country-rock band. The song writing is solid. The instrumentation is simple and direct. Tweedy's raspy vocals and Jay Bennett's guitar playing really came together well. For people like me who love the roots rock stuff, this is a great albumn, and the last before Wilco got into some strange alt-pop stuff.
Music is my savior, and I was maimed by rock and roll.......2007-04-07
A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, acoustic then electric, horns(!) - what a mélange. It is, above all, American music. As the music veers hither and thither you can pick up traces of Gram Parsons (of course), mountain music, rockabilly, late 60's San Fran. psychedelia and good old guitar driven rock and roll. This is another major accomplishment from Jeff Tweedy and Wilco. Eleven years after its release it sounds as fresh as when it was released. Wilco is one of too few bands that, over a protracted period, can change direction from record to record, yet remain relevant & vibrant and maintain its fan base.
Making two LP length cds rather than one mammoth cd is a great idea. I realize that a listener can always start a 72 minute cd half way through and thereby avoid always hearing just the first half. However, how many of us do this? More often than not we start at track one and then skip to the next cd after we have heard enough. The latter halves of full length cds get short shrift.
Make it 4 1/2* because of the fabulous "sunken treasure".

good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13
This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Riding the momentum of the hit single "Learn to Fly," which hit No. 1 on the modern-rock charts long before this album's release, the Foo Fighters' third record is unarguably its most refined and poppy. The ominous riff that the opens "Stacked Actors" (which sounds like something Kurt Cobain could have hacked out on Nirvana's gnarly In Utero) is pretty much a red herring. The 10 tunes that follow are a succession of hook-laden pop songs tarted up with guitarist-vocalist (and former Nirvana drummer) Dave Grohl's thick guitars and increasingly sugar-sweet vocals. Nearly every cut on There Is Nothing Left to Lose has the potential of following "Learn to Fly" up the charts. The production is big and friendly and songs like "Generator," "Aurora," and "Headwires" just melt in your mouth. And even though the Foo Fighters' latest is seductively sweet in sound, there are just enough rough edges and lyrical angst to keep things interesting. --Adem Tepedelen
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Rock Albums of the '90s.......2007-01-27
Probably the only album that I can honestly say does not contain a weak song on the entire cd.
An incredible combination of lyrics, vocals, electric guitar, and drums that accompany each other perfectly...which seems a difficult task in this music genre. For me personally, it often seems that in the albums of other bands, either the vocals, guitar, or drums override the other two...but not in this album.
Dave Grohl has outdone himself (yet again). It's the musical version of caffeine and an electric album to work out to. Taylor Hawkins' drums are solid, powerful, and clean (listen to the first 20 seconds of Gimme Stitches and you will see what I mean).
Although "Learn to Fly" is probably the most recognized track (with an incredibly funny music video to match)...most of the other songs are equally memorable and high energy and all are worth listening to again and again.
Plenty to gain.......2006-11-10
One of the best young bands to come our way in a very long time.
A perfect blend of pop and rock.......2006-06-11
The Foo Fighters certainly had a lot to prove when they released this gem back in 99'. Avoiding the sophmore slump in a big way, Dave and the gang released one of the top albums of the 90's (and of all time in many rock fan's eyes). Would "There Is Nothing Left to Lose" compare to "The Colour and the Shape", or would it be a dissapointment. Well, although the album hasn't been heralded over time as TCATS has, it certainly deserves to be. Every track here is a fantastic blend of pop and rock, from Stacked Actors to M.I.A. The highlight is of course Aurora, a little love song Dave wrote about his life in Seattle, that just happens to be this Foo Fighter fanatics favorite of all time. The truth is this isn't the Colour and the Shape. However TINLTL certainly deserves to be recognized as one of the greatest albums of the 90's, and one of Dave Grohl's most wonderful achievements.
Very Enjoyable!!!!.......2006-05-21
The number of cd's that an individual owns is not an indicator of that person's musical expertise-it just means that the person likes to shop for music. Everyone has different musical tastes and will view music differently. This is not my favorite Foo Fighters cd-"The Colour and the Shape" and "In Your Honor" are..but this is a favorite in my collection..of close to 2000 cd's.
Enjoyable.......2006-04-06
This is a solid release for the Foo Fighters. This perhaps stands as one of their best albums, from the totally awesome opening song "Stacked Actors" to the slower concluding song "MIA", I say this isn't a "boring and predictable" album. What, did the person below me know every single chord Dave was going to play in advance? Please, it doesn't matter if you have 2000 or 2000000 CDs, anyone with a remote taste for rock music should like at least 3 songs on TINLTL.
Like I mentioned above, the opening song "Stacked Actors" is truely amazing, with it's head-banging chorus and soft and dreamy verses. "Breakout" is also fast-paced, and of course it's followed by the big single "Learn To Fly", which is how I was introduced to the Foo Fighters. Actually, every song on here I like, so I won't bother naming any more. Indeed, it's a rare thing for me to be able to enjoy listening to a whole ablum without skipping any songs.
As a whole, I think the Foo Fighters are a very mature band, and I appreciate the fact that they don't need to swear every 3 words in order to have cool songs. And don't be fooled: Nirvana was an entirely different kind of band than the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl is awesome on drums, though, I must admit. So anyways, the Foo Fighters are worth getting into, because they always have solid releases and are just fun to listen to. Pick this one up, you'll like it.

The hazy hints of dystopia from Sly and the Family Stone's fabulously successful 1969 hit album Stand! turned full-force on its follow-up, There's a Riot Goin' On. By 1971, Sly had his Hollywood mansion and legions of droppers-by laying down parts of Riot, many of them later overdubbed by Sly himself. The resulting album is entrancing, backed often by an austere, early drum machine and featuring dope-glazed vocals, paranoid shadows and, of course, a stewing funk groove. Horns are here, thinned out so they jab harder, and the keyboards gleam and shimmer and icily coat the beats, which sound in today's parlance simply lo-fi. And the beats, they've slowed menacingly, with voices dropping in, dropping out. Drugs were flowing freely by this point, complicating Sly's sound, inadvertently making an album that indelibly matches its maker's psyche-in-time. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Sly Stone's dark masterpiece........2007-05-16
Sly and the Family Stone's "Stand!" was an album of optimism and the brightness of '60s counterculture, but creeping just below the surface on that record was a darkness and claustrophobia-- an edge that separated "Stand!" from any of its predecessors or its peers. That darkness is the sound of "There's a Riot Goin' On", Sly Stone's bleak masterpiece, in its way the sound of civil unrest and, in my assessment, the greatest funk album ever recorded.
When I speak of claustrophobia, I mean it as a production vaue, and it's something evident throughout the record. There's a density to the record, even on the looser and less arranged pieces, that really sets the tone for the album. And while not all the album's songs have a message to match this claustrophobia, it does have a tendency to make even the optimistic material sound like you're trying to remember a dream after you've woken up. Take single "Family Affair"-- it's loose, based around a gentle pop vocal hook and is presented with a smooth baritone lead, but it sounds like "Stand!" dragged through the mud. It works out fantastically. All of this is accentuated by the tendency to move towards funk vamps for everything-- sometiems as much as seven minutes of the same riff feeds into this feeling of density.
But really, it's dark funk that dominates the record throughout-- wah wah guitars, dirty basslines, snapping horns, and Sly Stone vocalizing and singing all over the map, fierce and at times nearly out of control-- opener "Luv N' Haight" and Brave & Strong" are two fine examples of this. Along the way, he manages occasional moments of delicate beauty with a hint of melancholy that keeps the album from being a bit too bleak ("Poet", "(You Caught me) Smilin'") and closes things up with a recasting of "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" as a slice of slow funk that somehow manages to be as intriguing as the original.
This reissue remasters the record, appends a handful of bonus tracks (a single mix of "Runnin' Away" and three instrumentals leftover from the sessions) and includes a nice liner notes essay. The remastering alone makes this a worthwhile pickup, all the dark beauty of the record really comes forth and the feeling of the record is, if anything accentuated by it.
Truthfully, "There's a Riot Goin' On" may not be for everyone, it's a pretty dark record, but it's also the kind of thing that can really reinvent someone's opinion of Sly & the Family Stone (it certainly reinvented mine). It also serves nicely as a companion to "Stand!", they are very much opposite sides of the same music. I give a slight edge to "There's a Riot Goin' On" as Sly Stone's masterwork. This is essential listening.
A Family Stone Affair.......2007-04-18
For many many years after it's realese 'Theres A Riot Goin' On' has been considered Sly & The Family Stones best album.Well in the long and short,it's isn't.Sly never had a "best" album,he had a handfull of them.So this is the second of a three Sly "masterworks" that begun a year or so before with Stand! and ended a year or so after this with Fresh. One thing about a lot of the music here is that it emphasizes rather aimless grooves with Sly's chocked voice playing a more eccentric role;melody and song construction is not always the main priority.Does'nt mean that the shoppy wah wah's,organs and Sly's newfound Rhythm King drum machine don't draw you right into classic grooves such as "Luv N' Haight","Poet","Africa Talks To You","Time" and the mean "Thank You For Talkin' To Me Africa" which quaotes from "Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf",only drags much slower.Of course there really are some classic songs here-one being "Just Like A Baby".Musically it's almost nothing-spare spare spare but it has this quirky melody and a vocal so scorched it's as spare as the music. Then we all know "Family Affair" right? What a relevant hit-great beat, that wah wah and "bloods thicker then the mud,it's a family affair"-MY FAVORITE!!!!Just as wonderful are "Brave & Strong" and "(You Caught Me) Smilin'",three of the most melodic things here, next of course to "Runnin' Away" (the albums other hit) which is nothing but melody. And "Spaced Cowboy"-HILARIOUS,the funniest thing on the record, yodeling cowboyish funk that I am sure Sly did completely stoned but his sharp humor shined right through. The instrumental bonus cuts sound like vamps from the sessions that grew into this album, the sessions that (like the vamps) went nowhere.Okay I know;Larry Graham is credited as being on this but Sly played almost all the bass lines.About Sly's bass it's barely audible,a different style then Larry. But this really is a wonderful album, called a classic along with many others that often don't deserve the title. But "Riot" does so this is one of those musical feats worth wolfing down,no matter where you head is it.
